Dollywood Robi’s ‘Sacred Bond’ with Spiker

When show biz and sports merge, it’s headline material. Some instances are when PBA cagers end up with actresses or when Manny Pacquiao ventures into yet another TV show. Lately, the newest sensation is UAAP Women’s Volleyball. The championship battle between De La Salle Lady Spikers and Ateneo de Manila Lady Eagles were always jampacked. The players of both teams have gained movie star-like popularity. The charming spiker of Ateneo, Gretchen Ho is exclusively dating TV heartthrob, Robi Domingo.

“We’ve known each other since high school,” says Robi. “Gretchen and I met at a soiree. At first there were bad vibes between our batches. We’ve been dating since June 2012. But as much as possible we want to keep it low-key. We have an agreement not to divulge too much information because we want to keep our bond sacred.”

How did you show Gretchen your support after her team lost the championship?

I told her to look at the bigger picture. Even if they didn’t win, mas nag-trending pa siya and the rest of the Fab Five of Ateneo sa Twitter than the winners. She still has a long journey ahead. Volleyball wasn’t a popular sport before but now it’s a huge craze because both teams have solid supporters. I heard there’s a plan to organize a Volleyball Professional League a la PBA. Gretchen is more than qualified to play there.

Will you allow her to join show biz, too?

That’s not for me to say. I know she’s interested in TV hosting. I leave it up to her. I’m just here to support her.

Considering that you’re busy with your three new shows on ABS-CBN (“The Biggest Loser,” “I Dare You” and “The Voice”), how do you manage to squeeze Gretchen in your frenzied sched?

I always live by the rule that you will always allot time for things you really want to do. You can never be too busy for people you care for.

Gretchen and Robi take time out to be together so it will never be “time’s up” for them.

Kakai on Mario: A ‘Super Good friend’

Swooning fans of Thai heartthrob Mario Maurer are envious of Kakai Bautista. Some Mario diehards are bashing her on Twitter. Kakai’s message to them: “God bless you!”

Rumor has it that Mario is smitten with the lovable comedienne. Some quarters insist that Mario has split up with his longtime girlfriend, Gubgib Sumontip (a Thai actress). Kakai and Mario became close during the shooting of “Suddenly It’s Magic.”

What’s the score?“Pardon my show biz answer but

we’re just super good friends,” Kakai says. “We had dinner in Bangkok recently with his manager and my friends. We’re both fun-loving. He is a wonderful guy. Very humble. No airs,

even if he’s a superstar in Thailand.”Who knows? Friendship is just a few

heartbeats away from love.I teased Kakai, “Just end your friendship

and be lovers instead.”

Vina’s life Revolves Around Pretty li’l Ceana

Vina Morales is one proud mama. Her daughter Ceana (who turns 4 on April 25) just graduated from kindergarten. Will she allow her “unica hija” to join show biz someday?

“If she is inclined and the time is right, then okay,” Vina says. “For now, she’s too young to know what she wants to do in life. She can do commercials. Like any mom, I would be thrilled to see my baby in a TV ad or on a billboard.”

Now that her love life is “zero,” her world revolves around Ceana. “Although I’m happy being single, I still pray that God will send the right guy to me,” she muses. “I leave it up to Him. God’s choice is the best choice.”

Her younger sister, Shaina Magdayao, is also loveless after parting ways with John Lloyd Cruz but is being linked to Piolo Pascual. What can Vina say about that?

“Issues such as that one are a given in this biz,” she points out. “As far as I know, Shaina and Piolo hang out with their friends when they are not busy shooting their movie.”

The lovely sisters, with or without a

Mistaken IdentityMy close friend (daughter of a well-

loved show biz icon) feels so bad for her son, who was beaten up by four bodyguards and friends of the son of a high-ranking official in a Quezon City bar on Friday night.

“It was a case of mistaken identity,” my friend sighs. “When they learned that he was from a show biz clan, it was too late. My son was already badly bruised. We are still planning what to do.

It’s tough because the guy’s dad holds a top position. But if my son lets me, I will reveal his identity para mabawasan ang kayabangan niya (to make him less arrogant).”

I told her she had nothing to fear—the legion of fans who love her dad dearly would surely rally behind her.

Bar brawls can be avoided if men just consume alcohol and not let alcohol consume them instead.

DEATH STAyED VICE President Jejomar C.

Binay yesterday announced that Joselito Zapanta, the overseas Filipino worker scheduled for execution in Saudi Arabia, has been given a three-month reprieve by the Saudi government.

In a press conference at the Coconut Palace, Binay, the Presidential Adviser for OFW Concerns, said that Saudi King Abdullah has given an order to defer the execution of all qizas or death penalty cases in the Arab country, including that of Zapanta.

“Dahil sa kautusan ng Hari ng Saudi Arabia na ipagpaliban

ang lahat ng kaso na ang hatol ay pagpugot ng ulo, nabigyan ng tatlong buwan na palugit o extension ang ating kababayan na si Joselito Zapanta,” the Vice President said.

He said this was confirmed by Adbulaziz Abdulrahman

Al Gaeit, the Assistant of the Undersecretary for Public Rights of the Emir’s Office, who met with the Philippine Embassy officials in Riyadh.

Binay said Zapanta’s reprieve begins the day after the deadline set by the victim’s relatives for the payment of the blood money.

“Ibig sabihin, dahil ngayon, March 12 ang deadline, matatapos ang tatlong buwang palugit o reprieve sa June 8, 2013,” he said.

However, the Vice President clarified that the reprieve did not mean that the deadline set for Zapanta’s family to pay the blood money has also been extended.

“Wala pa pong desisyon ang kaanak ng biktima sa usaping yan. At ‘yan po ang binibigyang pansin ng ating Embahada sa Riyadh,” he said.

Binay again thanked King Abdullah “for yet another humanitarian gesture.”

“His benevolence has given our kababayan a three-month lease on life, and his family additional time to raise the blood money,” he said.

“We also wish to thank the Emir’s Office for their efforts in facilitating the amicable settlement and forgiveness, as well as the extension of the deadlines, allowing the maximum period for the settlement of the amount,” Binay added.

“Gusto kong bigyan ng pansin ang mga ginagawa ng ating Ambassador sa Saudi na si Ambassador Tago, ng lahat ng opisyal ng ating Embassy, at ng DFA sa pamumuno ni Secretary Albert del Rosario, para matulungan ang ating kababayan,” he further said.

The Vice President also revealed that President Benigno Aquino and Zapanta’s mother, Maymona, both wrote King Abdullan on March 9 to ask for his help.

“Ang dalawang sulat na ito ay naipadala na sa Saudi Ministry of Foreign Affairs na siyang magbibigay nito sa Hari ng Saudi Arabia. Dahil confidential ang nasabing mga sulat, ipagpaumanhin ninyo kung hindi ko masasabi ang nilalaman nito,” he said.

Binay said Zapanta and his mother were able to talk on March 10, when the latter, accompanied by Philippine Embassy officials, visited her son in jail.

The Vice President reiterated his appeal for help to raise the full amount needed to secure Zapanta’s freedom.

Official Website of Pres. Aquino HackedThe hacktivist group,

Anonymous Philippines, has hacked the official website of President Aquino to protest his alleged failure to resolve the crisis in Sabah.

The intrusion on the Office of the President’s website, www.president.gov.ph, occurred at around 1:30 am Thursday, forcing the Palace web administrator to temporarily close down the site.

Secretary Herminio Coloma of the Presidential Communications Operations Office said they expect to resume public display of the President’s website in a few hours after needed protection measures have been put in place.

“At around 1:30 a.m. today, we detected a breach when an errant sentence critical of the government on the Sabah issue was found to have been inserted in one of the news items within the website. No further intrusions were made as the internal security protocols were activated,” Coloma said.

In a message posted on the website, the hackers criticized the President’s supposed inaction to prevent the the deaths of several Filipinos in Sabah as well as the rights abuses against women

and children in the disputed territory.

“Greetings, President Aquino! We have watched how you signed into law a bill that endangers and tramples upon the netizens’ freedom of speech and expression. Now, we are silent witnesses as to how you are mishandling the Sabah issue,” the group’s statement read.

“We did not engage the Malaysian hackers who invaded our cyberspace since we expected you to appropriately and judiciously act on the same, but you failed us. You did nothing while our fellow brothers are being butchered by the Malaysian forces, and while our women and children become subject of human rights abuses,” it added.

The hackers ended its message with a warning to the President to take action to end the armed conflict in Sabah. “If you can’t act on the issue as the Philippine President, at least do something as a fellow Filipino. We are watching,” the group said.

As off press time, the website www.president.gov.ph is still down.

Pimentel Calls Zubiri ‘face of Dagdag-Bawas’

SENATOR Aquilino Pimentel III on Wednesday criticized his fellow senatorial candidate Juan Miguel Zubiri for supposed failure to address the problem of poll fraud in Mindanao.

Pimentel called Zubiri “the face of dagdag-bawas (vote-shaving)” and a “fake senator” who resigned in 2011 “out of a desire for political profit, not for principle.”

Zubiri resigned after certain personalities admitted that former President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo had a hand in election cheating in the Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (Armm) in 2007. He was a candidate of Arroyo’s Team Unity.

“In the four years that he was a pretender in the Senate, what did Zubiri do to address the perennial problem of election cheating in the Armm?,” Pimentel said.

Zubiri, who is running under the United Nationalist Alliance, earlier challenged Pimentel to show his accomplishments in the Senate before criticizing

the “no balance billing” in public hospitals implemented in Zubiri’s hometown in Bukidnon province.

Unlike his nemesis, Pimentel said he worked to help Armm “reverse its reputation as the cheating capital of the Philippines” being one of the authors of Joint Resolution No. 17 which caused the cleansing of the list of voters in the region.

“Zubiri is the face of dagdag-bawas and other insidious and malevolent forms of electoral fraud in this country. He is one good reason why some of our people completely distrust elections and politicians,” the senator, who is seeking re-election under the administration-backed Team PNoy, said.

As chairman of the Senate Committee on Electoral Reforms and People’s Participation, Pimentel said he authored/co-authored and sponsored four significant bills, two of which have become laws.

These are the Electoral Processes Accessibility Act and the Mandatory Biometrics Registration Act.

by Mario BautistaFree Hand Gerald, Maja in

‘Bad Romance’?THE feedback on the net about

the Maja Salvador-Gerald Anderson romance is generally negative, but the parties concerned just don’t care. They have yet to admit that they’re officially on and just insist on the usual line that they’re just friends. But it’s common knowledge that action speaks louder than words. They were recently seen surfing in La Union and they even posted their pictures on the net.

Right now, Maja’s show, “Ina Kapatid Anak,” is rating well but it’s because Kim Chiu co-stars with her. The real gauge of how her romance with Gerald is affecting her career would be for her to do a solo show or movie. As we all know, when she was launched by Star Cinema in the film “Cactus Heart,” with her then real life BF Matteo Guidicelli, the box office result was not that satisfactory.

As for Gerald, he has two new films coming up, one with Tikoy Aguiluz and one with Erik Matti (co-starring Piolo Pascual). Let’s see how his romance

with Maja would affect its box office performance. As one writer says: “We hope hindi sila maghilahang pababa gaya nina Richard Gutierrez at Sarah Lahbati na nag-suffer ang careers nang maging on sila kaya di kumita ang first movie na magkapareha sila.”

Angelika Reluctant Accepting Mother RolesANGELIKA De La Cruz admits she

felt reluctant to accept the role of Louise de los Reyes and Lauren Young’s mom in “Mundo Mo’y Akin.” “Kasi hindi naman masyadong nagkakalayo ang mga edad namin,” she says. “Si Louise talaga ang anak ko, but she’s born ugly so pagpapalitin ko sila ni Lauren who’s the child of our housemaid Sunshine Dizon. Si Lauren ang papalakihin ko as my child. Sabi ko, di ba weird na akong nanay nila. But the staff told me they really want someone young in the role of the ugly Rodora who’d get rich, magpaparetoke and become Giselle. May challenge talaga yung role kasi may big transformation, so tinanggap ko na.

Sa pangit scenes ko, three hours bago matapos ilagay ang prosthetic make up sa’kin. Something new for me. Even my own son, hindi ako nakilala. Ngayon, enjoy na ako doing my role.”

Max Sad about Ending Happy about Gains

MAX Collins is understandably sad with “Pahiram ng Sandali” ending this Friday. “I’ll have good memories of doing this show,” she says. “This is my biggest break so far and I’ll miss my co-stars, lalo si Tita Lorna Tolentino who plays my mom. She was so supportive. From my earnings in this show and sa ‘Coffee Prince’ before, nakabili rin ako ng sarili naming house and lot in Pasig, kaya hindi ko talaga ito makakalimutan.

I’m also thankful to our director, Maryo de los Reyes, for guiding me in my role. After this, kinuha niya ako in his new movie to be shot on location in Bohol, tentatively titled ‘Bamboo Flowers’, where I’ll play a tourist guide.”

As Cindy in “Pahiram ng Sandali,” Max would deliver her baby abroad and still would not allow the father, Dingdong Dantes as Alex, to see their baby. But Alex has a terminal illness, pancreatic cancer, and Cindy relents when she learns about this. Mark Gil as Larry is devastated to learn his son Alex is dying while his other son, Neil Ryan See as Andrew, is now confined in a mental hospital after losing his sanity due to substance abuse.

Lorna Tolentino as Janice is reconciled with her late husband’s other woman, Alessandra de Rossi as Baby, who she helps deliver her baby. Baby reveals to her that Christopher de Leon as Philip has forgiven her before he died for having an affair with Alex. Prepare to shed some tears as “Pahiram” shows its final heart-rending episodes this week.

Jay R No Comment on Battery Complaint by KristaTWO showbiz couples parted ways

recently and both are said to have had bitter breakups. Singer Jay R is reported to be accused by former Bb. Pilipinas International Krista Kleiner of battery. Their relationship lasted for more than two years. Everyone thought Krista’s showbiz career would flourish after she became a beauty queen but what happened was the opposite. All the more that it didn’t take

off. We haven’t heard anything from her until she and Jay R broke up, with her saying she’s a victim of physical abuse. They used to be so sweet with each other,

especially when Krista was a contestant at Bb. Pilipinas and Jay R was so supportive. Wonder what happened. Jay R refuses to defend himself and say anything about Krista’s allegation. Someone close to him says he just doesn’t want to dignify the issue anymore.Another showbiz couple whose

relationship obviously didn’t end well is that of Sheena Halili and Rocco Nacino. They never officially admitted they’re on but it’s obvious on Sheena’s twits that their parting was less than cordial. She confesses they’ve lost their past closeness to one another. They don’t even communicate with each other anymore. Rocco himself admitted on the set of GMA News Channel’s “Bayan Ko” that they’ve lost touch. But he quickly added that he wishes they could be friends again.

At the status, master calendar hearing on February 27, 2013, Los Angeles Immigration Judge Monica M. Little terminated the removal proceedings of a Mexican respondent battered by her U.S. citizen husband, upon oral motion of Deputy District Counsel Jennifer W. Smith of the Department of Homeland Security, as requested by this Author.

Indeed, this Author represents the Latina respondent in her removal proceedings for entering the United States without inspection, when she was brought here from Mexico at one-and-a half year old. Her identity is withheld to protect her privacy and maintain confidentiality.

Facts Of And Proceedings In The Case:This 31-year old female respondent has

lived, studied, and worked in the United States since 1985, when she came here from Morelia, Michocan, Mexico. She was served with a Notice To Appear on February 21, 2008, which placed her in removal proceedings.

On or about July 13, 2009, she filed, through this Author, her Form EOIR-42B, Application for Cancellation of Removal For certain Nonpermanent Residents with the Texas Service Center.

During the pendency of her application for cancellation of removal with the Los Angeles Immigration Court, on January 2, 2010, her U.S.-citizen husband committed domestic violence on her by hitting her above her left eye with his forehead. She fell to the ground and began crying. She sustained a large bump above her left eye. A family friend came into the room and pulled her husband out. He was extremely intoxicated. He was prosecuted and convicted of domestic violence on her on January 6, 2010, by the Riverside County Superior Court.

On June 6, 2011, she filed her Form I-360, Self-Petition of Abuse Spouse of U.S.-Citizen Husband, and her Form I-485, Application for Adjustment of Status to Lawful Permanent Resident with the

Vermont Service Center. She is separated from her husband because of

the domestic violence. She takes care of their four-year-old son.

Prima Facie Determination And Extension and Termination Of Removal Proceedings:

On July 11, 2011, the Vermont Service Center sent notice on establishment of prima facie case for classification under self-petitioning provisions of the Violence Against Women Act. The Vermont Service Center subsequently approved the Form I-765, Application For Employment Authorization on November 18, 2011 to November 17, 2012.

Moreover, on May 15, 2012, the Vermont Service Center extended the prima facie case determination for 180 days up to November 11, 2012. After which, no further extension was granted. A recent check online with the Department of Homeland Security revealed that the Form I-360 is still pending.

At the status hearing on February 27, 2013, before LA Immigration Judge Monica M. Little, this Author reminded the Court that the Form I-360 self-petition of the abused respondent has been pending since June 6, 2011. So, the Court inquired of Deputy District Counsel Jennifer W. Smith of the Department of Homeland Security, if the Department would lessen the Court’s docket in view of the delay in adjudication by the Vermont Service Center.

She obliged by orally moving for the termination of the renewal proceedings of the respondent, as requested by this Author. Judge Monica M, Little issued Order, terminating without prejudice the removal of proceedings on February 27, 2013.

Don’t Stop Believin’: Everyman’s JourneyNow on US Theatrical Run

Don’t Stop Believin’: Everyman’s Journey, the critically-acclaimed Ramona Diaz documentary on the legendary band Journey and the phenomenal rise from obscurity of its Filipino front man Arnel Pineda, is finally on its theatrical release across the United States starting last Friday, March 8, in New York and California and 13 other key markets/cities.

“After its world premiere at last year’s Tribeca Film Festival, the crowd-pleasing opus has been anticipated by thousands of Journey’s loyal fans who never fail to pack the group’s live performances in all 50 states,” reported Funfare’s Big Apple correspondent Edmund Silvestre.

It follows the real-life rock ‘n roll fairy tale of Arnel, a former street kid and struggling singer who became the lead vocalist of one of America’s best-selling and well-loved bands after Journey discovered him on — where else? — YouTube while the band was faced with the dilemma of finding a replacement for its lead singer, Steve Perry, who quit the group.

New York-based filmmaker Vincent “Ting” Nebrida, who is behind the film’s promotion, said Don’t Stop Believin’ is a must-see among all Filipinos.

“The fact that an American distributor, Cinedigm, picked it up and is spending for its marketing and distribution, is a huge deal and it says a lot about the quality of the film,” Ting told Funfare. “When you think about it, the film is about a Filipino talent (Arnel), directed by a Fil-Am filmmaker (Ramona Diaz), made for Filipinos and Americans as well, so it really deserves our total support. Its success can only empower us as a people.”

The Philippine Consulate General in New York has also been promoting the documentary which the New York Magazine dubbed as “one of the most remarkable rock stories of recent years,” and the New York Daily News described as “winning enough to woo even the staunchest Journey foe.”

Edmund quoted a Philippine Consulate

statement in an e-mail to the Fil-Am community: “Let’s empower ourselves by expressing our national pride — especially with the recent successes of boxing champ Nonito Donaire and all-time great Manny Pacquiao, NBA coach champ Erik Spoelstra, Miss Universe first runner-up Janine Tugonon, American Idol first runner-up Jessica Sanchez and, of course, our very own Arnel Pineda.”

Edmund also quoted Consul Zaldy Patron, a self-confessed Journey fan, as saying, “The docu is awe-inspiring and absorbing. You’ll find yourself rooting for Arnel. His story makes you think that anything is possible under the sun. And you’ll see why Journey stays on top of its game.”

The docu, which has won this year’s Audience Award for Best Documentary Feature at the 24th Palm Springs International Film Festival, is also anticipated in other countries where the illustrious band continues to rule with its timeless hits like Faithfully, Separate Ways, Anyway You Want It, Lights, Wheel In The Sky and Don’t Stop Believin’ still lording over the airwaves.

In New York City, the film started screening March 8 at Quad Cinema in Manhattan, Williamsburg Cinemas in Brooklyn, and Sunnyside Center Cinema in Queens.

In California, it will be shown at Laemmle NoHo 7 in North Hollywood, AMC Orange 30 (The Block) in Orange, Reading Cinemas Carmel Mountain 12 in San Diego, and Reading Cinemas Gaslamo 15, also in San Diego.

Other screenings include Coolidge Corner Theatre in Brookline, Massachusetts; AMC River East 21 in Chicago, Illinois; West End Cinema in Washington D.C.; Gateway Film Center in Columbus, Ohio; Malco Wolfchase Cinema in Memphis, Tennessee; Bowtie Criterion Cinemas at Movieland in Richmond, Virginia; CCA Cinematheque in Santa Fe, New Mexico; Pearlridge West 16 in Aiea, Hawaii; Kapolei 16 in Kapolei, Hawaii; and Tower Theatre in Salt Lake City.

BB Acquits Herself in Halik ng Tarantula

BB Gandanghari didn’t disappoint in Halik ng Tarantula (based on the best-selling novel which inspired the Hollywood movie Kiss of the Spider Woman), mounted over the weekend at the Teatrino (Greenhills, San Juan City) as the first venture of her own production.

My friends and I caught the first staging last Thursday, March 7 (last show was on March 9), and although we found it much too long (two hours and a half, excluding the 15-minute intermission) we sat it out until the much-awaited(?) finale when BB as Molina (played by William Hurt in the movie) was locked in a lip service with her leading man, newcomer Jovic Monsod as Valentin (played by the late Raul Julia in the movie).

I guess those who were anxiously waiting for the much-ballyhooed “passionate” nude love scenes (the play’s publicity come-on) went home a bit disappointed (bitin), especially since those who watched the press preview the night before were gushing over how BB and her other leading man, Jet Alcantara, went “all the way,” kissing in gay abandon and stripping to the buff

before the curtain fell. Was the first regular run purposely

made more “tame” because Jovic’s parents and BB’s mom Eva Cariño were in the audience? (Said Eva, “Ano kaya ang makikita ko?” adding in jest, “Baka baliw na ako paglabas ko dito.” Luckily, she survived the play with her sanity intact.)

Newcomer Jovic, who was among the “tenants” of Big Brother in Pinoy Big Brother’s Teen Edition four years ago (“When he was 16,” said his manager Jonas Gaffud), was a revelation even if he buckled (but only slightly) in some lines. He appeared comfortable onstage and he deserved a pat on the shoulder for having memorized those long lines during the more than two hours that he was onstage with BB. Did the third actor back out because he was intimidated by the challenge of delivering those kilometric dialogues?

We can’t say anything about Jet’s performance because we didn’t see him. But maybe we would, in case BB staged a repeat as she promised.

Three cheers to director Soxie Topacio for his controlled work, despite the fact that he was handling relatively new actors.

ALDEN Richards is currently being linked to Julie Anne San Jose and Lauren Young. Julie Anne is the established ka-love team of Elmo Magalona while Lauren is said to be Elmo’s real life squeeze. He’s also being linked to his own ka-love team, Louise de los Reyes, who’s the girlfriend of Enzo Pineda. How come he’s not courting anyone who’s not attached to any other actor yet? A writer asks Alden pointblank: “Bading ka ba?”

Instead of being offended, Alden just laughed. “Sure po ako sa pagkalalaki ko,” he says. “Wala lang sa agenda ko ang panliligaw as of now kasi bago pa lang ang career ko at sayang naman ang opportunities coming my way. If I’d have a girlfriend, tiyak na magrereklamo rin kasi I won’t be able to give her much of my time. She’ll just feel neglected. So saka na ‘yang lovelife, kapag mas established na ang career ko. Eh, ngayon, pinapaaral ko pa ‘yung bunso kong kapatid. Gusto ko ring magkabahay sa Manila para hindi na ko uwian sa’min sa Sta. Rosa, Laguna araw-araw, kaya lang hindi pa kaya ng budget ko as of now.

Also, hindi pa rin kasi ako talaga tinatamaan nang totohanan. If ever ma-in love ako nang todo, mapipigilan ko ba ‘yun? Siyempre, hindi, ‘di ba? Hindi ko nga alam why I’m being linked to Julie Anne gayong nagkasama lang kami sa ‘Party Pilipinas’. Sina Lauren and Louise naman, mga kasama ko ngayon sa new soap kong ‘Mundo Mo’y Akin,’ but it’s all just work for all of us.”

Coco Martin Says Support for Cong. Sonny not for the Money

COCO Martin wants to make it clear that he’s not supporting Baler Rep. Sonny Angara for senator because he’s being paid. “I really believe in his advocacies, lalo na ‘yung tungkol sa providing good education for all and supporting senior citizens,” he says. “I agreed to tour various schools with him, like Philippine Nomal U and Philippine Women’s U. Nakikita ko naman, kahit saan kami magpunta, mainit ang pagtanggap ng tao sa kanya, lalo

na ng mga kabataan.”Rep. Sonny is really lucky as

he’s also supported by Sarah Geronimo and, recently, when he dropped by at the location shooting of the indie film, “Ekstra, The Bit Player,” in Batangas, no less than Gov. Vilma Santos warmly received him as he’s the chairman of the House Committee on Higher and Technical Education. Gov. Vi even gave him a symbolic giant balisong as Batangas’ souvenir gift for him.

wHy SExy ACTRESS AND HUNK ACTOR

BROKE UPMANY are wondering why

a sexy actress and her hunky boyfriend broke up. From a very reliable source, we learned that they’ve actually lived in for almost a year. They got to know each other better and, as folks say, familiarity breeds contempt.

The hunky actor said he’s often taken by surprise by the sudden mood swings of the actress. Happy one moment then depressed and sullen the next. The sexy actress said she cannot put up with her ex-BF’s “baboy” ways. “Lahat ng pinagbihisan niya, iniiwang nakakalat kunsaan-saan, pati mga sapatos at medyas na ang babaho ng amoy,” she said. “Kaya ayun, hindi ako nakatagal. Split na lang kami.”

Aljur Appeased with New ProjectsALJUR Abrenica is just being

candid when he said he felt sad when he didn’t have any new show after “Coffee Prince” that ran only for 8 weeks.

“Normal naman ‘yung magtampo, ‘di ba?” he says. “But now, happy na ako kasi nilatag naman ng GMA ang plans nila for me in 2013 and I’m pleased with it. Una nga ang pagkasama ko sa cast ng ‘Indio’ starting this week. It’s an honor for me kasi fan ako ni Sen.

Bong Revilla at ng action films niya, most of which I was able to watch bago pa ako nag-join ng showbiz.”

In “Indio,” he portrays Bagandi, the datu of a small banwa. “I underwent workshops and physical training for the role. Pinaghandaan ko talaga ito dahil kailangang makipagsabayan ako sa mga malalaking artistang kasama rito sa ‘Indio’.”

Who is Bagandi in Simeon/Indio’s life? Will he be a friend

or foe? “Magiging allies kami ni Sen. Bong dito. Abangan n’yo dahil maraming action scenes na very thrilling talaga ang execution ni Direk Dondon Santos. Napasama rin ako noon sa ‘Amaya,’ another costume epic, pero mas matindi ang role ko rito kasi kasama raw ako hanggang ending. Iniba pati ang costume ko rito kaysa sa ‘Amaya.’ Pati ako, excited talaga sa participation ko rito sa ‘Indio’.”

Jolina, Married but not Ready for family lifeJOLINA Magdangal

doesn’t mind playing Alden Richard’s stepmom in “Mundo Mo’y Akin” that will replace “Pahiram ng Sandali” starting March 18 on GMA7. “Maganda ang back story ng character ko, si Aida,” she says. “Ako ang tunay na may ari ng kayamanan ng family namin, but I was cheated by Jaclyn Jose and her son, Gabby Eigenmann. Na-in love ako sa isang driver at iniwan nito sa’kin ang anak niya, na lumaki ngang si Alden. He’s treated as an outsider in the family, lalo’t nagkagusto siya kay Lauren Young, na anak ni Gabby and Angelika de la Cruz. But it’ll be revealed later na si Lauren, anak lang ng katulong na si Sunshine Dizon sa isang Amerikano at si Louise de los Reyes talaga ang tunay na anak nina Angelika at Gabby pero inaapi-api nila.”

At the show’s presscon,

Jolina’s hubby, Rivermaya’s Mark Escueta, just patiently waited for her in the distance. “Malayo ito sa ibang guys na boyfriend pa lang artista, umeeksena na sa mga presscon at nagpapa-interview

pa,” says one newshen. So how’s married life?

“Masaya,” says Jolens. “We just celebrated our first anniversary. Nag-honeymoon kami in various Asian countries. We have bought

our own lot in Quezon City, patatayuan pa lang namin ng bahay. We still live with his parents in Parañaque na mga napakabait naman.”

So what has she discovered about Mark that she didn’t know before? “Our first year together, adjustment period pa rin and we’ve learned to adjust to one another. He gets so worried ‘pag nai-stress ako sa work, like when I was a mentor in ‘Protege’ or while hosting ‘Personalan’ na masyado akong naaapektuhan. Now he understands na ganu’n lang talaga ako, masyadong intense pagdating sa work, but it’s not serious. Ako naman, I’ve learned to give him space. He’s very quiet. E, madaldal naman ako, e. ‘Pag tumahimik na siya, hinahayaan ko na lang muna siya.”

When do they intend to have a baby? “Gusto muna naming ipatayo ‘yung sarili naming bahay before we start a family.”

ABS-CBN HAS NO NIGHTly SlOT fOR MARTIN

MARTIN Nievera’s late night talk show is back on air at ABS-CBN but was aired without any fanfare. “I just want people to feel like it didn’t go off the air at all,” he says. “For the pilot episode, we did two tapings. In one, guests sina former sweethearts Cristine Reyes and Rayver Cruz. In another, si KC Concepcion. The staff chose the KC episode to air first kasi mas kilala ko na si KC since we worked together in ‘X Factor Philippines’. Now, some folks are asking me to make it every night, but walang space ang ABS, e. Punumpuno sila. But I really love doing this. I want to grow old doing this, like Johnny Carson or David Letterman.”

work gets affected whenever I go on a diet.”

Dingdong’s drama series, “Pahiram ng Sandali,” which also features Lorna Tolentino, Christopher de Leon and Max Collins, is set to air its final episode on March 15.

Dingdong plays Alex, a photojournalist who falls in love with an older woman, Janice, who happens to be the editor in chief of the publication where he is employed.

Lessons learnedAsked what he learned from playing

Alex, the actor said: “You have to stand by every decision you make, may it be right or wrong—this will mold you. It’s how you rise and step up from difficulties and failures, especially in a not-so-perfect situation, that truly matters.”

He admitted to feeling relieved that the series, with a theme so “sensitive, complicated and tragic,” would soon end. “Carrying on with complicated relationships is still unacceptable to most viewers. The topic is still taboo to Pinoys. Also, the story is so melancholic. It’s too draining for us actors.”

Dingdong will soon be seen in an independently produced film called “Dance of the Steel Bars” by Cesar Apolinario and Marnie Manicad. It will be shown in SM cinemas in May.

“Pahiram ng Sandali,” directed by Maryo J. de los Reyes, also features Neil Ryan Sese, Alessandra de Rossi and Mark Gil, among others. It airs weekdays on GMA 7’s “Telebabad” block.

Dingdong Defends Marian’s Best Actress Award, Sexy Pictorials

Actor Dingdong Dantes believes his girlfriend Marian Rivera deserved the best actress award she received recently from the Entertainment Press Society, which had sent fans of superstar Nora Aunor staging a walkout after its announcement.

“I know she deserved the award,” declared Dingdong. “There were a lot of opportunities for her to showcase her acting in ‘Amaya.’ Her character became a prisoner, a slave, a warrior and then a princess. It was very complex. The material was really something.”

But avid supporters of Nora, who was nominated for her performance in TV5’s “Sa Ngalan ng Ina,” think otherwise. They walked out of the venue while Marian was delivering her acceptance speech.

Dingdong also defended Marian’s decision to go “daring and sexy” on the cover of two glossy magazines.

TrustingHe said: “I trust her judgment. I trust her

taste. I think she still looked wholesome in all of her poses.”

For the first time since she joined show biz in 2006, Marian agreed to appear on

the cover of the January 2013 issue of a men’s magazine. According to reports, the issue had to be reprinted twice to fill in the demand for copies. The 28-year-old actress also posed for the summer-themed April issue of a fashion magazine in a yellow two-piece bikini.

Dingdong said they don’t consult each other on matters like that. However, he was definite Marian “first thought hard before saying ‘Yes’ to that.”

“I found that the pictorials were tastefully done. They were very classy. She’s beautiful in all of the shots, although I found her to be really stunning in yellow,” the actor said.

Not for himWhile Marian got raves for going

sexy, Dingdong, 32, said he wouldn’t be seen doing the same thing anytime soon. “Let’s just give it to those who are more deserving—the new ones,” he stressed. “It’s such an effort for me to get into shape, although I don’t neglect it. I’d rather concentrate on the roles I’m committed to play on TV and in the movies than do magazine shoots or fashion shows. My

How Maja Salvador Stays Positive Amid Intrigues“So how was your Valentine date?” a

show biz scribe asked Maja Salvador.Craning her neck, the actress called

for her handler behind a group of reporters crowded around her. “Ah, kasali ba ’yun dito (Can we discuss that here)?” Maja asked, feigning surprise as if hinting that the interview was supposed to be only about her contract signing as endorser of Tupperware Brands fragrances, and not about her relationship with rumored boyfriend Gerald Anderson.

But despite the occasional reminders to focus on the endorsement, the stream of questions were still about her love life and the intrigues hounding her these days.

Maja and “Ina, Kapatid, Anak” costar Kim Chiu had a much-publicized falling out earlier this year, when Kim found out that her close friend has been dating her ex-boyfriend Gerald.

“Intrigues are part of this business, and one should know how to handle

them,” she said. “I’d rather stay quiet than talk and try to clear the issues. I know who I am. I just want peace.”

Maja pointed out that in the world of show biz, rumormongers will try to concoct incredible stories out of thin air. And there’s nothing anyone can do about it. “Sometimes people write about an issue as if they know the whole story. They’ll meddle and play with our lives because it’s their job,” she lamented.

Does she turn to Gerald for support amid all the controversies? “Just because I have a suitor doesn’t mean I have to solely rely on him. I also draw inspiration from my career, my fans and family.”

Leave family outAnd when asked how she feels about

Gerald declaring in a recent interview that she’s special to him, Maja could only muster, “I’m thankful.”

Despite everything, Maja chooses to appreciate all her blessings, and look at the brighter side. But still, bashers do get the better of her at times, especially when

they cross the line and drag her family into the fray. “I do get negative comments whenever I post something on Instagram, but I welcome them because it’s their opinion,” she said.

But dealing with them every single day could be exasperating, Maja confessed. “I’m not a statue or made of stone. I get hurt, too. They’re too much to take at times.”

She pleaded: “I’m the celebrity here; the one working—please leave my family out. I want to protect them.”

So far, Maja has managed to keep her composure, not giving in to the bait and bile of her detractors. “I don’t want to waste my time replying to them. But I’m glad they’re wasting their time on me,” she said, laughing.

Time surely does fly and it’s quite surprising to know that the Kapamilya star is celebrating her 10th year in the biz this year. “We’re definitely planning something for the fans. I might do provincial tours and mall tours,” she related. “I also have two coming movies. I’m excited.”

Sana in time ma-realize niya na nandito ako bilang kaibigan,” giit pa niya.

Masayang-masaya si Kris dahil nakuha niya ang best talk variety show host award para sa nasabing morning show.

“Super touching ito. Ang sarap ng feeling but this really matters a lot because we have such a young population. Natutuwa talaga ako kasi I am still relevant. Pinapanood pa nila ako and natuwa ako sa sinabi na values because you know how to respect other people,” pagtatapos ng aktres.

teleserye ni Judy Ann Santos na Against All Odds.

“Masaya talaga.

Samantala, isang kakaibang pelikula

Huwag n’yo paniwalaan.

ENTErTAINmENT ENTErTAINmENT

Burbank, CA – On Thursday, March 7, 2013, the 2nd Annual Queen Lola Pageant was formally re-introduced to the community. Having had tremendous success the previous year, it was only fitting that a pageant dedicated to and in celebration of Filipino grandmothers (lolas) blasts off this Spring 2013.

In brief, the Queen Lola pageant was created to be a heartwarming and touching tribute to lolas everywhere. Too many times, lolas are not fully appreciated or recognized for their contributions to society, and more importantly, to our families. The Queen Lola Pageant is simply an opportunity to showcase the lola’s skills, talents, capabilities, personalities, and allow each lola to tell their story.

During the press conference, the evening’s host, Ted Benito, introduced the distinguished panel of the Queen Lola Pageant. With event producers, President/CEO Mildred Deang and SVP/General Counsel Norberto F. Reyes of INSIDER PRODUCTIONS, LLC, alongside veteran actor, comedian, singer, and host of last year’s pageant, Bernardo Bernardo, they reiterated the mission of the pageant, along with the excitement and the memorable moments from last year. Highlights were then displayed from the photo shoots, landmark visits, talent competition, evening gown competition, the final five, and Bernie Targa-Ganon being crowned the 1st Queen Lola. In addition, a sneak peek of the new Queen Lola commercial

featuring official spokesmodel, multi-award-winning actress Pilar Pilapil was screened for all the guests in attendance.

A main feature of the press conference was the reigning Queen Lola 2012, Bernie Targa-Ganon, again taking center stage to describe her experience during the pageant and how post-pageant, her life has truly changed. From the coronation, to the incredible recognition here and in the Philippines, she has truly felt like a Queen. When visiting her home town in the Philippines, a parade was held in her honor, and her float was built for her by supporters in her hometown, with an onslaught of supporters and photographers everywhere she went. This was something she “had never experienced before.”

To close the conference, the panel opened questions from the press. With the thrill and spirit of it all, the Queen Lola 2013 Pageant got off to a rollicking start. The feeling was shared across the room, and many guests clamored for this special event to start the search for the community’s latest spokesperson and role model.

The Queen Lola 2013 Pageant is not your typical pageant. It is more about one’s heart than beauty. A pageant that will be remembered for a lifetime.

For application, details, and information about Queen Lola 2013, please call 213-788-3323 or e-mail: [email protected].

Press Conference The Queen lola 2013 Advisory CouncilWith the tremendous responses to last year’s pageant, INSIDER PRODUCTIONS felt it necessary to create

a council comprised of influential and respected females to better meet the needs and demands of both the candidates and the viewing public. By having a selected and distinguished group of individuals representing the best interests of the people and the Lolas, it would help ensure the commitment of the pageant to be unlike any pageant seen before. The purpose of this year’s advisory council is to share the ideas and opinions to better touch the heart of all those viewing, to enhance the promotion of the Queen Lola Pageant, to instill wisdom and strength in others, as the lolas in the pageant have shown, to celebrate the storied life of all the contestants.

The Queen Lola 2013 Pageant is a pageant truly a pageant more about heart than beauty. With the support of our Queen Lola 2013 Advisory Council, it will only ensure that message has been made loud and clear. On behalf of the organizers of the Queen Lola 2013 Pageant, we thank these women for supporting a noble cause and for truly believing that you are Never Too Old to Rock!

Haughty star has ‘wet and wild’ problem

Heard on the Radyo Inquirer show “Kliq Showbiz” (dzIQ 990 AM, Monday to Friday, 3 to 5 p.m.): Haughty Star is not well-loved by peers. In fact, HS has incurred the ire of not a few coworkers.

So it comes as no surprise that HS is whispered about in the studio because of an embarrassing condition.

Under the hot studio lights, HS sweats profusely, particularly under the arms. It is most obvious when HS is wearing a colorful outfit.

We suggest HS go after a deodorant commercial. Or “Wet Ones.”

PlaygirlAll sorts of nasty talk have been

hounding Beautiful Starlet. Not a few insiders have pointed out that she is an incorrigible flirt.

A spy insists that BS fooled around with a slew of costars—including Popular Hunk and Closet Cutie. She just doesn’t discriminate.

BS also seduced Handsome Insider, a high-ranking member of the production team. Problem is, HI is engaged to Haughty Star. (See above.)

BloatedTalented Performer’s ego has

ballooned bigger than his fan base, says a mole.

Making matters worse, TP’s High-Flying Manager has likewise become very demanding.

Local producers are being turned off by the duo’s overbearing ways. No one wants to hire TP because HM’s asking price is too steep.

TP should really consider dumping HM now. Humility goes a long way in the biz.

Million-peso has-been

From the Inquirer tabloid Bandera: Hunky Star has been raising well-plucked brows in the gay community.

Wealthy Benefactor asked HS out on a date. HS quoted a mind-boggling six-figure talent fee for one night.

Without missing a beat, WB agreed—and took out HS. Twice. So HS laughed all the way to the bank—with almost P2 million!

HS is no spring chicken and sour-graping insiders believe WB had overpaid him.

Sinking shipNeophyte Insider was unhappy with

the way a Pet Project turned out.Although fast friends with PP’s

producers and stars, NI quit in the middle of production.

PP ran into all sorts of problems; NI was probably right to bail out before the ship sank.

This mom not a good role model

Who knew Gorgeous Starlet’s Feisty Mom had the makings of an actress?

FM accompanied GS on a provincial sortie. At the airport on their way back to Manila, FM had to answer the call of nature.

Since boarding time was minutes away, FM had to rush. She was dismayed to find a long queue at the ladies’ room.

Quick-thinking FM pretended to be disabled so she could use the cubicle for the handicapped.

whiff of infamyHeard on the Radyo Inquirer show

“Kliq Showbiz” (dzIQ 990 AM, Monday to Friday, 3-5 p.m.): Former Matinee Idol had a smelly problem.

MI fell in love with screen partner, Cute Girlfriend who was similarly smitten.

Romance quickly turned to animosity, however. CG broke up with MI because she couldn’t stand his body odor.

MI’s other girlfriends couldn’t bear the stench, either. Only one Brave Woman prevailed.

Now happily married, MI must thank his lucky stars that BW seems to have a chronic case of sinusitis.

Scandal paysRemember Scandalous Starlet, who

got a hefty talent fee for baring all in a TV show?

Well, she milked her 15 minutes of notoriety and ended up wangling a meaty role in a prestigious production. We hear the role is that of a woman of ill repute.

Someone close to an enemy of SS quipped: “Why are girls like SS rewarded for their misdeeds when they should be chased out of town?” Ouch.

Addicted to lovePicked up from the Inquirer tabloid

Bandera: Pretty Starlet is addicted to boys.

According to a mole, PS found the perfect partner in Hot Hunk, who’s similarly hooked.

The new playmates have been spending an inordinate amount of time in the boudoir, defying friends and fans who are against their affair. PS didn’t even think twice about turning her back on Close Buddy, to be with HH.

Ryzza Mae Dizon, asked what she wanted to have after buying a car: “Bahay po sa Fairview!” (Gee, little girls used to dream of much less. But aiming high—carry on!)

Heart Evangelista, asked if she and Sen. Chiz Escudero were already talking marriage: “No … as of now we’re just enjoying every minute of our lives.” (And the fun stops when talk of marriage starts?)

Oyo Sotto, asked if he was willing to sit down to dinner with dad Vic and his girlfriend Pauleen Luna: “Oo naman. Kita ko naman na happy si Daddy.” (Good gauge.)

Vic, asked if he paid for Pauleen’s new house: “Wala akong kinalaman diyan! Mayaman ang pamilya niya!” (Uh, that doesn’t necessarily follow.)

Krista Kleiner on why she and Jay-R broke up: “The relationship was getting a little bit abusive.” (Before it became really abusive…?)

Max Collins, asked how “Pahiram ng Sandali” changed her life: “Dati kapag nasa labas ako, sasabihin ng mga tao ‘Uy, si ano!’ Pero now, they know my name.” (A name is certainly a step up from “ano.” But next time they should at least be saying: “Uy, si ano—magaling ’yan!”)

Marjorie Barretto, asked if she was okay with daughter Julia falling in love at 16: “I told her huwag muna ma-in love talaga kasi ang daming puwedeng mangyari at makakapigil lang ang love na ’yan ’di ba?” (Cautionary tales galore. You gotta be more convincing, mom.)

Zsa Zsa Padilla, asked if she planned to sell the Parañaque City house she shared with Dolphy: “Sa ngayon hindi pa [although] alog-alog kami doon. It’s a big house—medyo malungkot kasi tatlo lang kami.” (Take your time.)

(Take it easy, mom. How you deal with this is your decision and yours alone.)

BB’s nephew Raprap Padilla on “Halik”: “Medyo shocking. Pero BB na BB na si Tita BB!” (Could you be a little more emphatic?)

Gretchen Barretto, asked if she was still dreaming of marrying longtime partner Tony Boy Cojuangco: “’Yun ang ini-expect ng tao sa kultura natin. Pero I’ve come to a point in my life na Tony has [proven] his love for me—that is more than enough. Kapag nakasuot ako ng puting damit, parang kinakasal na rin ako.” (Not nearly the same, but good for you.)

Daniel Padilla, asked by Kathryn Bernardo what he wanted for his birthday: “Gusto ko ng shoes … ay, bass guitar na lang pala!” (Yes, we saw this, and it was embarrassing especially because, in return, Kathryn asked Daniel for a Louis Vuitton bag for her birthday. That was after much goading from the two adult host-interviewers: “This is your chance; we’re on national TV—he has to deliver.” What was that about?!)

Previously, De Guzman won the 2012 LA Weekly Theatre Award for Best Choreography for the same play.

Incidentally, your humble columnist (BB) also received the 2012 LA Weekly Theatre Award for Best Direction for the same production but apparently failed to qualify under NCCA’s stringent rules. We’re puzzled but happy nonetheless that our Tribute to the Manongs, a Depression-era low-budgeted production, merited rave reviews from LA mainstream critics as well as three other nominations from LA Weekly: Best Actor (Jon Jon Briones), Best Fight Choreography (Jon Jon Briones), and Best Ensemble.

Actor Briones was also nominated for Best Actor in the Ovation Awards. The staging of MAGNO RUBIO at Inside the Ford Theatre capped the celebration of Filipino American Heritage month. Lonnie Carter’s THE ROMANCE OF MAGNO RUBIO, based on Carlos Bulosan’s short story, essays the challenges faced by the early Filipino migrant workers in California during the 1930s. A major highlight of

Assemblyman Alejo initiated ACR 74--California’s apology for a history of injustice against Filipinos--which was recently passed unanimously by the California Senate and Assembly -- and presented the cast and production staff with a copy of ACR 74.

Incidentally, Assemblyman Alejo hails from Watsonville, CA scene of the most violent anti-Filipino riots in the 1930s.

AND SPEAKING Of INJUSTICE

Calling the Attention of the Cultural Center of the Philippines and the National Commission for Culture and the Arts: Let’s post more background information, reviews, articles, photos featuring legitimate Filipino artists on the Internet.

I recently Googled Julie Barredo Borromeo (Julie Borromeo-Roche) –who played a key role in Philippine dance as a teacher, choreographer, and dancer for decades—and found practically nothing! Now, that’s a shame. Especially when one considers how cyberspace is glutted with information on the latest gossip about showbiz scandals

and political grandstanding.Aside from celebrating dance through

her wide-ranging work in ballet, jazz, and stylized ethnic dance, Julie is a Legend in Philippine Musical Theater. I was blessed

to have had the opportunity to work with her (with her near-legendary “trembling hair” and all). Julie was my leading lady in such musicals as The Apple Tree, and I Love My Wife; choreographer in hits shows such as They’re Playing Our Song, The Wiz, and A Chorus Line; and, Star of Sweet Charity, Man of La Mancha, and Promises, Promises.

It is sad that we neglect honoring the achievements of artists of Julie’s caliber. If nothing else, Julie’s early 1960’s production of Flower Drum Song was instrumental in the creation of the Cultural Center of the Philippines. Years before the advent of Miss Saigon, Julie’s name was synonymous with musical theater, or as she proudly states: “Broadway--Our Way!”

PINOY INAMERICA

by Lorenzo Paran III

filipino Culture is Alive and well in the Greater los Angeles Area Part II

The L.A. area is also home to Kababayan L.A., the news channel that for quite a while now has been doing an amazing job of highlighting Pinoy culture. Hosted by the incomparable and multitalented Jannelle So, the daily news program has filled a huge gap in the coverage of Pinoy artistic and cultural goings-on in the Greater L.A. area. Kababayan L.A. continues to be the go-to program for Pinoy artists, organizations and businesses when they want to promote their works. You haven’t made it if you haven’t made it to Kababayan L.A.

And speaking of championing Pinoy culture, L.A. is also home to Ruben Nepales.

Nepales, who chairs the board of no less than the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (the organization behind the Golden Globe awards), has earned the respect of Filipinos worldwide for the

reporting he’s done on Filipino newsmakers in Hollywood—and there’s quite a few of them, whether stars or movie industry professionals.

Nepales writes one of the most popular columns in the Philippine Daily Inquirer, “Only in Hollywood,” through which he does his reporting on not only Hollywood’s biggest stars—such as Nicole Kidman, Sacha Baron Cohen, Russel Crowe and Quentin Tarantino, just to name those he’s interviewed recently—but also up-and-coming names such as Vanessa Hudgens, Darren Criss and Hailee Steinfeld, who all have ties to the Philippines.

He has compiled some of his pieces in his book “My Filipino Collection: The Philippines in Hollywood,” (an Anvil Publishing release). It’s a must-read for Pinoys who are crazy about showbiz. (You know who you are!)

In this regard, Nepales is in the unique

position of being both a reporter on and example of the brightest in Filipino-American culture. He’s a true pride of the community.

I can’t let a description of the richness of Filipino life in this area pass without mentioning music and, within that, Pinoy jazz.

I must admit to some bias here because jazz happens to be my choice of music, but I really think this area has something special, given the many exceptional Filipino jazz artists who are based here. There’s, for example, Mon David and Charmaine Clamor, two singers who by their sheer talent, have done so much to expand the boundaries of Filipino jazz. There is also Winston Raval, who is as good as jazz pianist-composers get. And then there’s keyboardist Tateng Katindig and saxophonist Ner de Leon, nicknamed the “Batman and Robin” of Pinoy jazz because they always seem to be together. There are many others. I wish I could mention them all here.

There are many other individuals and groups that make the Greater L.A. Area a hotbed of Filipino artistic and cultural activity: musicians, singers and entertainers, painters, writers, community leaders, and others.

And events celebrating our culture take the stage constantly. Last year we even had a pageant for Filipina lolas. (It was a fundraiser staged by ABS-CBN Foundation International and Insider Productions, the publisher of “Fil-Am Insider.”) Watch as the pageant makes a return this year.

The L.A. area, for that matter, is a hotbed of multi-ethnic activity, an expansive and colorful tapestry of different cultures that is without equal in all of Southern California and that symbolizes, along with the biggest and brightest American cities, the cultural

The entertainment press noticed that no one walked out of the theater while Angel was giving her acceptance speech. The fans of Nora, Vilma and other nominees recognized Angel’s performance in the movie.

“Hindi ako tumingin kasi natakot talaga ako. Pasalamat din ako kasi ang bait talaga nila. Maraming salamat. Alam naman natin na ibang klase yung talento nila. Pero thank you sa chance,” Angel said.

Asked if she’s open to the possibility of doing a project with Vilma and Nora in the future, Angel said she’s available anytime for the two seasoned actresses.

“Si Tita Vilma nakasama ko na siya sa ‘Mano Po’ pero hindi enough yung time namin and nakatulala lang talaga ako sa kanya. Kay Ate Guy naman, siguro kung okay sa kanya, kung tingin niya makakatulong ako sa project, ako go lang,” she added.

Angel said she missed a lot of names but Phil knows he is special to her. She revealed that before going to the event, the sportsman went to her house to ask her if she wanted him to escort. But Angel knew that Phil wasn’t able to arrange for what he will wear for the event.

“Alam mo naman yun, walang kaarte-arte. Ako maarte, sabi ko ‘nako, baka sabihin na hindi ka nagpapalit ng damit. Next time na lang,” she said.

Meanwhile, Angel was also asked about the rumored rift between her and “One More Try” co star Angelica Panganiban but the actress refused to comment on the gossip, saying they haven’t seen each other

5 tips for healthy skinGood skin care — including sun

protection and gentle cleansing — can keep your skin healthy and glowing for years to come.

Don’t have time for intensive skin care? Pamper yourself with the basics. Good skin care and healthy lifestyle choices can help delay the natural aging process and prevent various skin problems. Get started with these five no-nonsense tips.

1. Protect yourself from the sunOne of the most important ways to

take care of your skin is to protect it from the sun. A lifetime of sun exposure can cause wrinkles, age spots and other skin problems — as well as increase the risk of skin cancer.

For the most complete sun protection:

•Use sunscreen. Use a broad-spectrum

sunscreen with an SPF of at least 35. When you’re outdoors, reapply sunscreen every two hours — or more often if you’re swimming or perspiring.

•Seek shade. Avoid the sun between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m., when the sun’s rays are strongest.

•Wear protective clothing. Cover your skin with tightly woven long-sleeved shirts, long pants and wide-brimmed hats. Also consider laundry additives, which give clothing an additional layer of ultraviolet protection for a certain number of washings, or special sun-protective clothing — which is specifically designed to block ultraviolet rays.

2. Don’t smokeSmoking makes your skin look older and

contributes to wrinkles. Smoking narrows the tiny blood vessels in the outermost layers of skin, which decreases blood

flow. This depletes the skin of oxygen and nutrients that are important to skin health. Smoking also damages collagen and elastin — the fibers that give your skin its strength and elasticity. In addition, the repetitive facial expressions you make when smoking — such as pursing your lips when inhaling and squinting your eyes to keep out smoke — can contribute to wrinkles.

If you smoke, the best way to protect your skin is to quit. Ask your doctor for tips or treatments to help you stop smoking.

3. Treat your skin gentlyDaily cleansing and shaving can take a

toll on your skin. To keep it gentle: •Limit bath time. Hot water and long

showers or baths remove oils from your skin. Limit your bath or shower time, and use warm — rather than hot — water.

•Avoid strong soaps. Strong soaps and detergents can strip oil from your skin. Instead, choose mild cleansers.

•Pat dry. After washing or bathing, gently pat or blot your skin dry with a towel so that some moisture remains on your skin.

•Moisturize dry skin. If your skin is dry, use a moisturizer that fits your skin type. For daily use, consider a moisturizer that contains SPF.

4. Eat a healthy dietA healthy diet can help you look and feel

your best. Eat plenty of fruits, vegetables,

whole grains and lean proteins. The association between diet and acne isn’t clear — but some research suggests that a diet rich in vitamin C and low in unhealthy fats and processed or refined carbohydrates might promote younger looking skin.

5. Manage stressUncontrolled stress can make your

skin more sensitive and trigger acne breakouts and other skin problems. To encourage healthy skin — and a healthy state of mind — take steps to manage your stress. Set reasonable limits, scale back your to-do list and make time to do the things you enjoy. The results might be more dramatic than you expect. For more info, visit www.oskincarespa.com

Give one hundred and ten percent at work to rise above everyone else. Your sheer determination will show through. You will be fortunate now, be positive, but be aware that Mercury the communication planet is still Retrograde, so don’t assume anything.SCORPIO (Oct. 24 - Nov. 22) When passions run high with love, be careful of what you say. If you are waiting on an important answer, it can go your way, but it could be delayed.SAGITARIUS (Nov. 23 -Dec. 21) Express your feelings to open up communications between you and another, but make sure your words and actions are the same. Make time for yourself and set time aside to spend with those you love. If your career takes precedence over everything, recognize there’s more to life than desks and deals. CAPRICORN (Dec 22.- Jan. 20) If you must listen to gossip around the water–cooler, remember, not everything you hear will be accurate; some of it is just scandalous chitchat. Don’t get dragged in to someone else’s drama, do your own digging to find out the truth. Business news looks positive, particularly with a creative venture.
