This past semester and academic year has been one of Building Distinction in the College of Business and Technology. The College has built significant growth and distinctive new

programs that will elevate the College on the national scene, and completed the design phase of a new signature, 140,000 square foot Business Building that will bring the College together for the first time.

Groundbreaking for the new Business Building will be held this fall. With the significant growth the College has been experiencing, the need for the new building is ever present. All areas of the College continue to grow with the largest growth in the MBA program. The College of Business and Technology remains the largest College at UT Tyler with over 28% of total enrollment and over 48% of all graduate enrollment. Along with increasing enrollment, the College saw a record number of degrees awarded and accounted for 36% of all graduates at the University this past academic year. Even as the College enjoys outstanding growth, new recruiting and retention initiatives have been launched at the undergraduate level. These

initiatives include a new freshman-level Introduction to Business course and a new Learning Community program.

The College’s MBA program is beginning to receive national recognition. The MBA in Healthcare Management was ranked 15th nationally by The Best Business Schools and the general MBA was ranked 121st out of all MBA programs by US News and World Reports.

Our faculty have been actively developing new academic initiatives. Included are new certifications: Certified Financial Planner (CFP), Internal Assurance and Consulting, Oil, Gas and Energy Accounting, Certified Professional Category Analyst, SAP, and Leadership. New degrees include: General Business (major), Information Technology (major), Executive Healthcare Management (major), Leadership (minor), and a concentration in Marketing and Cybersecurity.

The College also held two major speaker events this spring. The Retail Summit was held in February and The Leadership Speaker Series was held in April. Several other events took place throughout the year.

I hope you will enjoy reading about our activities and successes from this past semester.

Overview The Department of Computer Science hosted the first annual Cyber Patriot Games Hack-a-thon at the Ornelas Activity Center on April 26, 2016.

The event included both undergraduate and graduate Computer Science students from the ethical hacking class as competitors. Undergraduate students from the computer science and computer information systems senior project courses designed and constructed the hack-a-thon infrastructure and playing environment. A set of graduate independent study students served as system testers for the constructed playing environment prior to the event. Students were divided into different teams and wore different hack-a-thon shirts associated with their team color.

The Department of Computer Science is pursuing an initiative in cybersecurity, and while cybersecurity involves a wide range of activities and courses, the hack-a-thon serves as an integral component in this effort.

It provides students with a real-world experience in preventing cyber intrusions and protecting information assets.

The students from the build team were excited to host the event and spent countless evenings and weekends testing ideas and working with the systems that were used for the event. They created an exciting playing field, not only for skillful hacking, but also with plenty of room for innovation and creativity.

Hack-a-thon Winners Team Orange were the overall hack-a-thon champions. Team members included: Varun Bhole, Taral Leuva, Bhagavatula Sastry and Suraj Thakur. Team Yellow were the undergraduate champions and members of the team included: Steven Dale, Emmalee Fulcher, Hung Nguyen and Bradley Thorn.

Overview The 2016 Retail Summit was a huge success. The event, hosted by the UT Tyler College of Business and Technology Center for Retail Enterprises, was held on February 23, 2016 at the Ornelas Activity Center. Guest speaker was David Bishop, Managing Partner of Balvor LLC and Segment Leader at Brick Meets Click. Bishop spoke about enhancing digital media’s role in the marketing plan.

Retail summit attendees learned about insights, engagement and experience. Information was also shared about the future Center for Retail Enterprises store and Consumer Insight’s Lab that will be located in the new Business Building. Construction will begin this fall.

Sponsors The summit could not have taken place without the generous support of our sponsors: Brookshire Grocery Company, Cavender’s, Convenience Store News, Glazer’s Distributors, Learning Evolution, Progressive Grocer, and the Texas Retailer’s Education Foundation (TREF).

Longview Retail Summit For the first time, the Center for Retail Enterprises co-hosted a retail summit in Longview with the Longview Chamber of Commerce. The event was held on February 26, 2016 at Pinecrest Country Club. Guest speaker was Stepp Stevens Sydnor, trusted sales and business leadership expert. Sydnor spoke on how to create the business you want out of the business you have.

Opening Fall 2018

This is an exciting time to be a part of the UT Tyler College of Business and Technology. With our exceedingly rapid enrollment, we are now the largest college on campus with some 2,400 students. The unwavering support of our faculty and staff, exceptional students, alumni and eager donors helped us to achieve this growth. Our projected expansion is contributing to the new Business Building that is set to break ground this fall.

The new Business Building will provide students with cutting-edge, technologically

enhanced classrooms and interactive areas, state-of-the-art labs, outreach centers, departmental suites for faculty cooperation enrichment, and teaching spaces to provide interaction with the community. It will also allow the College to meet the ever-growing challenge of providing a quality business education for tomorrow’s community leaders.

A ground breaking ceremony will be scheduled later this fall for the new building.

2016 CBT Awards Day Every spring semester, the College of Business and Technology honors outstanding students and inducts new members into two honor societies. CBT Awards Day was held on April 28th at the UT Tyler University Center. Through the process of faculty nomination and review, outstanding undergraduate and graduate students are selected from each major within the College to be recognized. Students are chosen based on their excellent academic records and consistent efforts to achieve in the classroom. Induction ceremonies for two honor societies, Beta Gamma Sigma (BGS) and Epsilon Pi Tau (EPT), immediately followed the Outstanding Student Awards. BGS is the premier honor society recognizing business excellence. Once inducted, lifetime members of the Society have earned the right to be considered the “Best in Business.” EPT is the leading international honor society for technology, recognizing academic excellence of students

Construction of the four-story, 140,000 square foot building is projected to take two years to complete; classes in the new Business Building could begin in fall 2018. The new building located on University Boulevard will make it the most prominently visible campus facility and will be easily accessible for students, faculty and guests.

Consumer-Based Cybersecurity The Department of Computer Science aspires to prepare students for the challenges of the dynamic world of cyberspace. The department offers a broad spectrum and growing set of programs at both the undergraduate and graduate level that reflect the current and future environment within information technology and all computing fields.

The retail industry has been the target of considerable cyberattacks in recent years. Significant efforts are underway both at the technological and policy levels to address the legitimate concerns of consumers. The Computer Science Department is uniquely situated within the CBT, and hence has the ability to develop a strong initiative to address policy issues related to consumer-based cybersecurity. The intent of the department is to become an NSA/DHS National Center of Excellence in Cyber Defense Education (CAE) and to become an authority and an advocate of consumer-based cybersecurity. A long term objective is also to become a NSA/DHS National Center of Excellence in Cyber Defense Research (CAE-R). The Consumer-Based Cybersecurity Initiative was named a University Center of Excellence in the new University Strategic Plan

Courses have been created in Business Intelligence and Analysis, Contingency Planning, Cyber Risk Analysis, Cryptography, Digital Forensics, and Ethical Hacking. These new courses are coupled with existing courses in Retail Cybersecurity and Retail Cybersecurity Management. The curriculum gives UT Tyler a broad spectrum of Cybersecurity courses beyond almost every school in the country. New degrees and areas of concentration have been created for students interested in Cybersecurity.
