STEWADRSHIP REFLECTION Stewardship is putting our faith in action through the use of the gifts given to us by God. It is becoming a true disciple of Jesus Christ. The Lord did not want us to be passive in our approach to living. He wants more from us than just being quietly holy.
Remember that stewardship is a call from God to recognize that all of our blessings and talents have been given to us for a purpose. As baptized Catholics it is our obligation to share these gifts willingly in order to serve the Church and our parish community. As we have pointed out many times, stewardship is much more than financial support. It is, as stated, putting our faith in action with the key word there as “action.” In that way we can become, also as stated, a true disciple of the Lord.
In today’s Gospel reading from the Book of Matthew Jesus calls us salt and then light. He tells us, for example, that we are the light of the world, reflecting His light. Specifically He says to those who choose to be His disciple, “Nor do they light a lamp and then put it under a bushel basket; it is set on a lamp stand.”
St. Teresa of Calcutta once said, “To keep a lamp burning you have to keep putting oil in it.” If we see ourselves as lamps as Jesus told us we should be, we need to keep the oil in it and that requires action on our part.

MI PEQUEÑA LUZ Cuando éramos niños cantábamos efusivamente la canción Mi pequeña luz (This Little Light of Mine).

THIS LITTLE LIGHT OF MINE As children we sang the lively song This Little Light of Mine. The words, of course, are based on today’s Gospel, in which we are called as disciples to be salt and light for the world. Children are uninhibited about sharing their faith. It’s only when we grow older that we prefer to hide our light under a bushel basket because our culture tends not to emphasize discipleship. The message in this week’s readings is clear: in order to give glory to God through our discipleship, we must show the light of Christ in our words and deeds. Not an easy thing for inhibited adults. Often we may think of salt and light in terms of what we do for others, but it can be just as important not to do something, such as getting angry with the stranger on the road, or telling an offensive joke.

St. James—St. Leo Catholic Community is under the pastoral care of the Eudist Fathers, or Congregation of Jesus and Mary. We owe our name to Saint John Eudes who founded the Congregation in France in 1643. The Eudists currently operate in 15 countries, most of which are in the developing world. Evangelization, mainly with the poor and the youth, is our primary purpose, as well as formation to ministry in the
training of diocesan priests and lay ministers. Our motto is “To Serve Christ and His Church.” For more information visit: http://www.eudistsusa.org
LAMPS AND BUSHEL BASKETS Jesus uses the present tense, "you are" salt of the earth and light of the world. This can be troubling to hear, upon a little reflection, when we already suspect that we are not. It's easy to see how often we fail to truly be salt and light for others. This can lead to discouragement and a fear of failing again. But Jesus says that being salt and light is God's gift, and not our own accomplishment. He notes the "bushel basket" that prevents the light of the lamp from being seen. We have created and received all kinds of patterns of thinking and behaving that block our capacity to be light for others. But these patterns do not define us. Whatever our faults, we are primarily God's beloved and gifted people. We can have hope that God will assist us in addressing our "bushel basket," to overcome what blocks our ability to love others. Jesus' Good News for us is that we are ultimately not the bushel basket, but the lamp.
CITY ON A MOUNTAIN Often, we envision Jesus' imagery of salt and light applied to the life of individual Christians. This is indeed appropriate. However, along with "salt of the earth" and "light of the world", we hear of a "city set on a mountain." Clearly, these images are also directed to Christian communities. A parish, for example, is called to have a visible, caring presence in its local area. As salt and light, a community of faith can add its own flavor and wisdom to its surroundings. A faith community can have its own "bushel basket," too. This might include unresolved internal conflicts, or a lack of welcoming to strangers, or just being too internally focused. These can prevent the community from demonstrating God's love. However, just as with individuals, God can lead the faithful to address these obstacles, and to become salt and light more fully for their neighborhood.
