TODAY’S READINGS First Reading — Who can ever know God’s counsel unless God gives wisdom and sends the Holy Spirit from on high? (Wisdom 9:13‐18b). Psalm — In every age, O Lord, you have been our refuge (Psalm 90). Second Reading — Paul asks Philemon to accept back his slave Onesimus, not as a slave but as a brother (Philemon 9‐10, 12‐17). Gospel — To be a disciple of Jesus one must carry one’s own cross and renounce all possessions (Luke 14:25‐33).

STEWARDSHIP REFLECTION At the end of today’s Gospel Reading from St. Luke, Jesus says a lot about what it means to be His disciple — the demands and the expectations. As His final statement in the reading, He says, “…anyone of you who does not renounce all his possessions cannot be my disciple.”

This is another case where the translation from the original Greek may produce misunderstanding. Most of us understand the word “renounce” as meaning “reject” or “hand over.” However, another meaning of the Greek word might be “to say goodbye to.” That is the real message, and it is one with a strong stewardship element.

What the Lord may be trying to communicate is our possessions can stand in the way of being His disciple and being a good steward. It is a question of trust. Trust is at the center of a stewardship way of life. Jesus tells us that we need to trust in Him to a greater extent than in ourselves or in what we may possess. That is, of course, not easy for us.

Nevertheless, to place our trust in the Lord is exactly what it means to be His disciple. Psalms perfectly captures the challenge we face and provides the answer to the challenge as well. In Psalms we are told: “Man says to God, ‘Show me and I will trust You.’ And God replies “Trust me and I will show you’.”

REFLECION DOMINICAL Al final de Lectura del Evangelio de hoy de San Lucas, Jesús dice mucho sobre lo que significa ser su discípulo ‐ las demandas y las expectativas. Como su declaración final en la lectura, dice: "... cualquiera de ustedes que no renuncie a todos sus bienes, no puede ser mi discípulo."

Este es otro caso en el que la traducción del original griego puede producir malos entendidos.La mayoría de nosotros entendemos la palabra "renunciar" en el sentido de "rechazar" o "entregar". Sin embargo, otro significado de la palabra griega podría ser "para decir adiós a." Eso es el mensaje real, y es uno con una fuerte elemento de la administración.

Lo que el Señor puede estar tratando de comunicarse es nuestras posesiones pueden interponerse en el camino de ser su discípulo y ser un buen administrador. Es una cuestión de confianza. La confianza es en el centro de una corresponsabilidad como forma de vida. Jesús nos dice que tenemos que confiar en él en mayor medida que en nosotros mismos o en lo que podamos poseer. Esto es, por supuesto, no es fácil para nosotros.

Sin embargo, para poner nuestra confianza en el Señor es exactamente lo que significa ser su discípulo. Salmos captura perfectamente el desafío que enfrentamos y proporciona la respuesta al reto también. En el Salmo nos dice: "El hombre dice a Dios:" Muéstrame y voy a confiar en ti. ' Y Dios responde: "Confía en mí y yo le mostrará '."

Dr. Aaron Kheriati, professor of psychiatry at UC Irvine and author of The Catholic Guide to Depression, will be the keynote speaker.

Office for Social Ministry

Bishop McElroy will preside at a special prayer service in observance of the National Day of Prayer for Peace in Our Communities called for by the National Conference of Catholic Bishop in light of the recent incidents of violence and racial tension in communities across the United States. The service will take place at 7 pm on Friday, September 9, the Feast of St. Peter Claver, at St. Joseph Cathedral, 1535 Third Avenue, San Diego 92101. Everyone is welcome to attend.

St. James Community Breakfast September 11th

The St. James Knights of Columbus will be cooking breakfast in the parish hall on September 11th from 8:00 am to 11:00 am. In addition to our delicious standard breakfast of scrambled eggs, country fries, pancakes, sausage, assorted fresh fruit and coffee; we are including a continental menu offering sliced fruit, croissants, a selection of sweet rolls and fresh juices. Why are these campaign receptions so important?

Family We are a parish family and we have always gathered together for important events: baptisms, confirmations, weddings, and even funerals. This also is a very important event in the life of our parish. Everyone who calls St. James Church his or her spiritual home should make every effort to attend.

Information We want the correct information to be available to everyone. The renovations taking place are important to the future of our parish. Please get informed! Leave your wallet at home, but bring your questions. No one will be asked to turn in a pledge at these receptions.

Community These receptions are a great chance to meet your fellow parishioners. All too often, we end up seeing just the people that attend the same Mass. Come meet some of the rest of your parish family.

Save By coming to a reception, you will help us save both money and time. When you come to a reception, you will be able to pick up your personalized information. Any family that does not attend a reception will be mailed their campaign materials. We have approximately 1,200 registered households at St. James Church, and we are committed to contacting each one. In addition to the mailing, volunteers will be following up with families that are unable to attend. Help save us money (on postage) and time (our volunteers have so much to do).
