GAME6 AT MARYLAND (NOV. 25)

SCOUTING THE TERRAPINSComing off a three-game trip to the 5-hour Energy Puerto Rico Tip-Off, Maryland is 2-2 under first-year head coach Mark Tur-geon, who came to College Park after four straight 24+ win seasons at Texas A&M. The Terrapins opened the season with a home victory against UNC Wilmington, while their other win came in Puerto Rico as they overcame an 11-point second half deficit to defeat Colorado. Leading the second half surge past Colorado was sophomore Terrell Stoglin who scored 25 of his career-high 38 points in the final frame. An ACC All-Freshmen team choice a year ago, Stoglin leads Maryland and ranks fourth in the confer-ence in scoring at 19.3 points per game. Senior guard Sean Mos-ley, a Baltimore native and former St. Frances teammate of FGCU freshman Dante Holmes, is second on the team in scoring (12.3) and has nearly half of the team's three-pointers. Mosley is 9-of-18 from long range this season and is averaging 18.5 points over his last two games. Like FGCU, Maryland's lineup sports several underclassmen as two sophomores and two freshmen make up the starting five. Redshirt freshman Ashton Pankey is off to a good start to his first official season as a Terp, hauling in a team-best 8.8 rebounds per game, a figure that ranks seventh in the ACC.

AGAINST THE ACCFGCU's only three meetings against an ACC team have all been against Miami. Two of the three have come on the road, as this years contest in Coral Gables was the start of another home-and-home between the two schools.

BALTIMORE CONNECTIONSFGCU has a trio of coaches and players with ties back to the Baltimore area. Head coach ANDY ENFIELD played four years at Johns Hopkins University and graduate work at Maryland. Enfield finished his career as the NCAA career free throw percentage leader at 92.5 percent (431-466). He still holds nine career records at Johns Hopkins, including 2,025 points en route to being inducted to the school's Athletic Hall of Fame in 2001. Assistant coach KEVIN NORRIS is from Baltimore and had a legendary high school career at Lake Clifton before going to the University Miami where he was a four-year starter at point guard. Freshman Dante Holmes is also a Baltimore native and graduated from St. Frances Academy in 2010. As a freshman and sophomore, Holmes played with Maryland senior Sean Mosley. Holmes led St. Frances to a pair of Baltimore Catholic League titles his last two seasons, scoring over 1,200 points over that span.

GAME6 AT MARYLAND (NOV. 25) GAME6 AT MARYLAND (NOV. 25)

NEW COACH NEW HOPESOn March 31st, the FGCU men’s basketball program got a new look for its 10th season in program history when ANDY ENFIELD was named head coach. Enfield, who spent the previous five years as an assistant with Florida State, is the second head coach in FGCU’s brief history. While at FSU, Enfield was a part of two teams that advanced to the NCAA Sweet Sixteen and back-to-back clubs that lead the NCAA in defensive field goal percentage.

WHAT CAN BROWN DO FOR YOUComing off his first career double-double at Miami, junior SHER-WOOD BROWN has carried over a strong finish to his sopho-more campaign into this season. After team-highs of 19 points and 11 rebounds against the Hurricanes on Tuesday, Brown now leads the squad in both scoring (11.8) and rebounding (6.4) - fig-ures that rank 13th and sixth in the A-Sun, respectively. Sparked by a career-high 26 points in last year's season finale at USC Upstate, Brown finished last February (10 games) with a 11.2 scor-ing average - more than four points above his season mark. Brown reached double figures in each of the final four games, averaging 18.3 points while leading the team in scoring three times.

BALANCED ATTACKThree different FGCU players are averaging double figure points on the young season with another just under the double-digit mark. SHERWOOD BROWN'S 11.8 per game clip is just ahead of freshman BRETT COMER at 11.2. Six different players have scored double-digit points in a game, while four different players have led the team in scoring, including three off the bench. Look-ing further, six players are playing 20 or more minutes per game, while nine players are above 15 per contest.

INSTANT IMPACTFGCU's freshmen class has wasted little time making an impact, accounting for 45 percent of the scoring, 35 percent of the re-bounds and 69 percent of the assists. Point guard BRETT COM-ER and combo-guard BERNARD THOMPSON rank second and third on the team in scoring at 11.2 and 10.8 points, respectively. Comer is also the team's top assist man with 5.0 helpers per con-test, a mark that ranks third in the A-Sun. Thompson's 10.8 points are joined by 6.0 rebounds per game. Thompson has scored in double figures a team-high four times, while Comer has led the team in assists in all but one game. The duo was joined in double figures by classmate FILIP CVJETICANIN in the win over Prairie View A&M. DANTE HOLMES is the final member of the fresh-man quartet that is having a big impact, averaging 5.0 points in 16 minutes per game.

WE'LL PICK YOU UPThrough five games, FGCU owns a 135-99 advantage in bench points, good for a +7.2 margin per game. The bench has supplied a double figure scorer four games, including the team's leading

scorer on three occasions. At SMU, sophomore CHRISTOPHE VARIDEL poured in 20 points on 6-of-7 from three-point land, while junior SHERWOOD BROWN'S 19 points against Ave Maria give the bench the top two scoring efforts by an Eagle this sea-son. On the flipside, Maryland has gotten just 63 points from its bench through four games.

SECOND HALF SURGELed by the play of freshman point guard BRETT COMER, FGCU has overcome a sluggish first half in four of its games by averag-ing 36.4 points over the final 20 minutes while limiting its op-ponents to 29.8. Comer has been the catalyst to the second half turnaround, averaging 8.4 points over the span while passing out 15 assists that have led to 38 more points. As a team, FGCU is shooting a scalding 52 percent (66-127) in the second half, including 20-of-44 from three-point land. At Miami, FGCU tied a program D-1 record for second half points given up by limiting the Hurricanes to 18 points on 4-of-24 from the field.

SHARP SHOOTINGFGCU ranks third in the A-Sun in nearly ever shooting statistic; field goal percentage (.464), three-point percentage (.393) and threes per game (7.0). The Eagles broke the 50-percent plateau from the field in each of their first two games and is shooting 52 percent in the second half. Junior SHERWOOD BROWN is seventh in the A-Sun in field goal percentage (.533), while sopho-mores CHASE FIELER and CHRISTOPHE VARIDEL are among the leaders in three-point percentage. Brown and Varidel account for 19 of FGCU's 35 three-point makes on the year. Varidel, who ranked fifth among all freshmen with 78 threes last season, is 11-of-24 on the year.

FAST STARTRanking among the top 10 in the Atlantic Sun Conference in five statistical categories, freshman BRETT COMER is off to a fast start early in the year. Highlighted by a 10-assist effort against Prairie View, Comer is third in the A-Sun in assists per game (5.0). He has reached double figures in three games, resulting in a team-high 12.7 points per game, good for ninth in the A-Sun.

BOARD WORKDespite lacking a ton of size, FGCU has out-rebounded all five op-ponents this season, owning a +5.6 margin on the boards to rank second in the A-Sun. The Eagles are also averaging double-digit offensive caroms (10.6) that have helped them score 20+ points in the paint each contest. FGCU's top two rebounders come from the backcourt. SHERWOOD BROWN'S 11 rebounds at Miami are a team season-high, as he leads the squad at a 6.4 per game clip. Freshman BERNARD THOMPSON'S 6.0 caroms per game feature a team-best 24 defensive rebounds. Senior KEVIN CANTINOL has used his 6-foot-10 frame to gather a team-best 11 offensive rebounds, just ahead of Brown's nine.

LAST GAME: Miami Fends Off Second Half Push From FGCU(Box Score on Page 28)MIAMI, Fla. - Despite holding Miami to 18 points and a 17 percent shooting clip (4-24) in the second half, the FGCU men’s basketball team couldn’t overcome an 18-point halftime deficit in a hard-fought 60-50 loss to the Hurricanes on Tuesday night at the BankUnited Center. • The 18 points given up by the Eagles in the second half equals the best defensive effort over the final 20 minutes by the Green and Blue since joining Division I in 2007-08. • After trailing 42-24 at the end of 20 minutes, FGCU quickly cut the Miami lead in half, opening the second frame on a 9-0 run that was capped by a three-pointer from Brown that forced Miami coach Jim Larranaga to call a timeout at the 15:49 mark. Brown’s three cut the Miami lead to 42-33, as the Hurricanes went the first 6:55 without a point by shooting 0-for-10 from the field. • Neither team lit up the scoreboard through the middle-half of the second period, as Miami managed just six points over the first 13 minutes, while FGCU followed its 9-0 opening run with no field goals and just five free throws over a 10-minute span. • Despite the offensive lull, FGCU continued to work on the defensive end and with three-pointers from Brown in consecutive possessions cut the deficit to seven points, 55-48, with 1:26 to play.

SEEING DOUBLEFreshman BRETT COMER has taken the reigns of the point guard position in his first season as an Eagle and against Prairie View A&M recorded the team's first double-double of the season. The Winter Park, Fla. product, who was the point guard alongside current Duke freshman Austin Rivers, went for 15 points, 10 assists, six rebounds and three steals in the win over the Panthers. Last game at Miami, SHERWOOD BROWN scored 15 points in the second half en route to finishing with his first career double-double of 19 points and a career-high 11 rebounds.

WITH A WIN ...• Set a record for most wins (3) in November during D-1 era.• Would give the Eagles their first road win under new head

coach Andy Enfield.• FGCU would own two wins over BCS foes. The first came

on Dec. 22, 2009 when the Eagles defeated DePaul 64-61 at Alico Arena. FGCU is 1-13 all-time against BCS squads.

SWEET NOVEMBERFGCU will play seven games over 17-day span to open the season. Out of those seven games, five will come on the road, including two trips to Texas. The last four games of the month will come away from home in Texas, Miami and Maryland.

D-1 TESTED & APPROVEDOn August 12, 2011, all 14 of FGCU’s Division I sports became postseason eligible when the NCAA Division I Board of Direc-tors approved the recommendation from the NCAA Division I Administration Cabinet to elect FGCU to Division I active membership. FGCU began its transition into Division I in 2007-08. The Eagles are now eligible for Atlantic Sun postseason play and NCAA Tournament.

BOMBS AWAYSophomore CHRISTOPHE VARIDEL ranked second in the A-Sun in three-pointers per game (2.6) in his rookie campaign, making total of 78 on the season. His 78 threes were the fifth-most by a freshman in the entire country and the fourth-best total in program history. Varidel made three or more trifectas in a game 16 times and accounted for 45 percent of the team’s long range makes on the year. The Versoix, Switzerland product finished second on the team in scoring (11.2) and was named to the A-Sun All-Freshmen squad.

THE MAN IN THE MIDDLEDespite having just four players over 6-foot-8, FGCU has one of the biggest players in the A-Sun Conference manning its frontline in 6-foot-10, 254-lb. forward KEVIN CANTINOL. The senior came on strong over the final 10 games of last season after becoming eligible mid-year after transferring from SEC foe Mississippi. Cantinol averaged 7.9 and 6.3 rebounds over the last 10 games despite making just four starts. Over the final 10 games, Cantinol led the team in rebounding five times and collected 27 offensive caroms.

A-SUN RANKED 17THThe 10-member Atlantic Sun Conference was lauded by CBS College Sports as the 17th-best Division I men's basketball conference, according to the media outlet's preseason rank-ings. Last year, Belmont represented the A-Sun in the NCAA Tournament, while Jacksonville and ETSU played in the Col-legeInsider.com Tournament.

2011-12 TRENDS

FGCU SIGNS DAJUAN GRAF IN EARLY SIGNING PERIOD (NOV. 10) Just two nights before his first official game as FGCU men’s basketball coach, ANDY ENFIELD announced that DAJUAN GRAF (Charlotte,N.C./PhillipO.BerryAcademy)has signed a National Letter of Intent (NLI) on the first day of the early sign-ing period and will join the Eagles in 2012-13. Graf, a 6-foot point guard, is a rising senior at Phillip O. Berry Academy where he has led the Cardinals to a 51-11 record and a pair of North Carolina Section 2A Champi-onships over the last two seasons. “We’re excited to add a player of DaJuan’s caliber to our program,” said Enfield. “His quickness, ball-handling ability and decision-making skills are exactly what we are looking for in a point guard. We expect him to fit in well with our other talented players and look forward to him joining our FGCU family.” As a junior last season, Graf averaged a team-highs of 15.4 points, 3.7 assists and 2.7 steals per game en route to leading Phillip O. Berry Academy to a 27-3 record and its second straight N.C. Section 2A Championship. Graf was named the Rocky River Con-ference Player of the Year and an All-Western Region squad selection. His 15.4 points per game were fueled by 22 double figure outings and seven 20-point performances, including a career-high 36-point outing in the season opener against Garinger. A multi-faceted guard, Graf also average 4.5 rebounds, had three double-doubles, seven performances of six or more boards and reached the foul line 10 times in a game five times. Graf’s starting point guard duties began his sophomore season when he led the Cardinals to a 24-8 mark and the first of his two Section 2A Championships. He burst onto the scene by averaging 13.2 points, 4.4 rebounds, 3.6 assists and 3.1 steals per contest. Graf reached double figures in 25 of 32 games, scoring 20 or more points three times to go along with a trio of double-doubles.

BIO Andy Enfield was appointed the second-ever head coach in Florida Gulf Coast men’s basketball history on March 31, 2011. Enfield will lead the program into its 10th season of existence and first as Division I postseason eligible in 2011-12. “It is with great pleasure that we welcome Andy, Amanda, and the rest of the Enfield family into FGCU, Southwest Florida, and our Eagles’ athletics family,” said Director of Athletics Ken Kavanagh. “A quality individual, Andy is a proven winner and brings to FGCU a tremen-dous wealth of experience and coaching success, on the both the collegiate and professional ranks. “In particular, he possesses a background of demon-strated commitment to excellence both on the court and in the classroom. In turn, we look forward to him providing energized daily leadership to our student-athletes, quickly getting engaged with our growing fan base and rapidly putting us in pursuit of the upper echelon of the Atlantic Sun Conference and beyond.” Enfield spent the previous five years as an assistant coach at Florida State, helping FSU to three consecutive NCAA Tournaments (2009-11), including the Sweet 16 in 2011. Enfield joined head coach Leonard Hamilton’s staff at Florida State in 2006. The Seminoles appearances in the last three NCAA Tournaments were the program’s first since 1998, as they accumulated 31 wins in ACC ac-tion over that span – second-most behind Duke – and advanced to the program’s first-ever ACC championship game in 2009. With three straight 20-win seasons to its credit, FSU advanced to the 2011 Sweet 16 in the South-west Region by defeating No. 10 Texas A&M and No. 2 Notre Dame in Chicago.

Recruiting and player development were chief among Enfield’s responsibilities at FSU where its 2010-11 roster boasted 11 top 100 recruits and a pair of McDon-ald’s All-Americans. In 2009, Basketball Times named Enfield the nation’s “Most Visible Assistant Coach” for the summer recruiting period, while ESPN The Magazine donned him one of “Five Super Assistant Coaches in Col-lege Basketball” during the 2008-09 campaign. Enfield’s prowess on the recruiting trails helped the Seminoles produce three straight top 25 classes, highlighted by the 2008 group that ranked in the top 10. A former NBA assistant with the Boston Celtics and Milwaukee Bucks, Enfield’s influence helped FSU develop five NBA draft picks over five seasons. Al Thornton (2007) and Toney Douglas (2009) were both selected in the first round and earned Associated Press All-American status while leading the ACC in scoring. In 2011, Chris Singleton became the Noles’ third first round pick in the last five years when the Washington Wizards took him with the 18th overall pick. A key ingredient to FSU’s success was its ability to play defense, as the Seminoles became the first team since the 1990-92 Georgetown clubs to lead the nation in defensive field goal percentage two straight seasons from 2009-11. In 2010-11, the Seminoles limited their op-ponents to 36.3 percent shooting from the field to lead the nation for the second year in a row. With Singleton and Douglas, FSU had the ACC Defensive Player of the Year in two of Enfield’s last three seasons, while 2010 NBA second round pick Solomon Alabi was runner-up.

COACHING EXPERIENCE• Head Coach, FGCU, 2011-Present • Assistant Coach, Florida State, 2006-11 • Assistant Coach, Boston Celtics, 1998-2000 • Assistant Coach, Milwaukee Bucks, 1994-96

Prior to his five years in Tallahassee, Enfield began his coaching career in the NBA from 1994-1996 where he served as the shooting coach for the Milwaukee Bucks and head coach Mike Dunleavy. While in Milwaukee, Enfield worked with four-time NBA All-Star Vin Baker and No. 1 overall pick Glenn Robinson. Enfield continued his NBA career as an assistant coach with the Boston Celtics under head coach Rick Pitino from 1998-2000. Enfield worked closely with then-rookie Paul Pierce who went on to win the 2008 NBA Finals MVP award. With the Celtics, Enfield increased his duties on the bench to developing game plans and scouting reports, assisting in practice strategies and offensive player development. Known for his shooting expertise, Enfield helped the Celt-ics shoot 74.5 percent from the free throw line in 1999-2000, a 5.3 percent increase from the previous year for the biggest improvement in the league. After his stint with the Boston Celtics, Enfield became a player development consultant for several NBA teams, while running his own company called “All Net Basketball” which focused on improving shooting technique and of-fensive skills. Over his time as a consultant and shooting instructor, Enfield coached more than 100 NBA players. During his collegiate playing career at Johns Hopkins University, Enfield set the all-time NCAA career free-throw percentage record with a mark of 92.5 percent (431-466). Enfield still holds nine career records at Johns Hopkins and was inducted into the school's Athletic Hall of Fame in 2001. He led the team in scoring in all four seasons en route to a program record 2,025 career points thanks to the top two single-season point totals in school history with 606 points in 1990 and 610 points in 1991.

As good as he was on the court, he was just as sharp in the classroom, as the economics major earned GTE Aca-demic All-America first team honors as a senior and second team honors as a junior. He was the first basketball player at Johns Hopkins to earn an NCAA Postgraduate Scholar-ship and was named the NABC Scholar-Athlete of the Year in 1991. Enfield and his wife Amanda, have two daughters; Aila and Lily, and son, Marcum.

GAME 1TCU-73FGCU-72Nov. 11, 2011 at Daniel-Meyer Coliseum

FORT WORTH, Texas - Despite trailing by as many as 16 early in the second half, FGCU fought all the way back and had several chances to take the lead in the final seconds, but came up short in a 73-72 season-opening loss at TCU on Friday night at Daniel-Meyer Coliseum. Freshman point BRETT COMER quickly pushed the ball up the court and executed a dribble-handoff to Brown, who knocked down a three with 4.8 seconds on the clock to make it a one-point game, at 73-72. FGCU quickly fouled Thorn on the ensuing inbound pass after a timeout to put the All-Mountain West point guard at the foul line. Thorns’ front end of the 1-and-1 missed to the right and the rebound was tipped into the corner where FGCU failed to get off a desperation shot. Three different players reached double figures for the Eagles, led by freshman BERNARD THOMPSON’S (pictured) 15 points off the bench. Thompson poured in 11 of his 15 in the first half, while adding six rebounds and four assists. The catalyst of the second half comeback, Comer had a hand in 24 of FGCU’s 41 points in the final frame. Comer finished the game with 12 points and five assists with all but two of the points coming over the final 20 minutes. Sophomore CHASE FIELER turned in a clean stat line with 12 points on 4-of-4 from the field, including 3-for-3 from long range, five rebounds, four assists and two steals.

GAME 2FGCU-79AveMaria-65Nov. 14, 2011 at Alico Arena

FORT MYERS, Fla. - Sparked by 15 second half points from freshman BRETT COMER (pictured) and SHERWOOD BROWN’S 19 points off the bench, FGCU picked up its first win under head coach Andy Enfield against Ave Maria, 79-64, in front of 1,547 fans in the home opener at Alico Arena Monday night. FGCU created its first real separation of the game midway through the final frame, going on a 17-2 run over a seven-minute period that took what was a six-point lead and turned it into a the largest edge of the game (21), 58-37, for the Eagles with 9:02 play. Brown scored 10 of his 19 points in the first half, sinking 3-of-6 from three-point land, while also adding six rebounds and three steals. It was Comer’s turn in the second half, as the Winter Park, Fla. product reached double figures over the final 20 minutes alone for the second straight game. Comer finished 7-of-10 from the field for 17 points to go along with a game-high eight rebounds and four assists. After shooting just 31 percent in the first half, the Eagles shot a sweltering 69 percent (18-26) from the floor in the second frame en route to 48 points. FGCU’s finished above 50 percent for the second consecutive contest with a 52 percent clip (31-60). FGCU took advantage of its superior size to own a 44-27 advantage on the backboard and a 34-16 edge in points in the paint.

GAME 3FGCU-68PrairieViewA&M-59Nov. 17, 2011 at Alico Arena

FORT MYERS, Fla. - Led by freshman BRETT COMER’S first career double-double and a strong second half defensive effort, FGCU picked up its second straight win with a 68-59 victory against Prairie View A&M on Thursday night at Alico Arena. For the third straight game, Comer reached double figure points in the second half alone, sparking a 12-2 run that turned a 39-33 Panther lead into a 45-41 FGCU advantage that it would never relinquish. Comer accounted for four points during the run and assisted on both three-pointers by classmate FILIP CVJETICANIN and sophomore CHRISTOPHE VARIDEL. The Eagles held a five-point lead, 59-54, with just under three minutes to play, before putting the game away with eight straight points that gave the home team its largest lead of the game (13), 67-54, and its second home win in four days. FGCU outscored Prairie View A&M 38-25 and limited the Panthers to just 8-of-36 from the field over the final 20 minutes. A trio of freshmen led FGCU in scoring with Comer’s double-double coming on 15 points, 10 assists, six rebounds and three steals over 35 minutes of action. Comer did a majority of his damage in the second half comeback, scoring 11 points and while dishing out six assists. Freshman BERNARD THOMPSON (pictured) contributed 13 points, while Cvjeticanin was perfect from the field, going 3-of-3, including two from long range, to add 10 points off the bench.

GAME 4SMU-65FGCU-64Nov. 19, 2011 at Moody Coliseum

DALLAS, Texas - Sophomore CHRISTOPHE VARIDEL (pictured) poured in a game-high 20 points and FGCU made 10 three-pointers as a team, but it wasn’t enough, as its two game-winning attempts in the final seconds came up short in a heartbreaking 65-54 loss at Conference USA foe SMU on Saturday afternoon at Moody Coliseum. The first 37 minutes of the game featured just two lead changes, but there were three over the final three minutes with the last coming on a breakaway layup by SMU’s Ryan Manuel off an FGCU turnover with 21 seconds left that gave the Mustangs a 65-54 lead. After calling a timeout, FGCU’s initial play was stopped, as Thompson had to take a fade away jumper from the top of the key that missed short. The miss caromed right to Varidel outside the right block where his put-back was to strong off the glass and glanced off the front of the rim as time expired. The one-point loss is the second of the season for the Eagles, who dropped a 73-72 decision in the season-opener at nearby TCU just over a week ago. Varidel accounted for six of FGCU’s 10 three-pointers, knocking down 6-of-7 from long range for 20 points in 25 minutes off the bench. Freshman BERNARD THOMPSON was the only other Eagle in double figures with 11 points, a game-high eight rebounds, three assists and two steals. Varidel and Thompson combined for 23 of FGCU’s 35 points in the first half.

GAME 5Miami-60FGCU-50Nov. 22, 2011 at the BankUnited Center

MIAMI, Fla. - Despite holding Miami to 18 points and a 17 percent shooting clip (4-24) in the second half, FGCU couldn’t overcome an 18-point halftime deficit in a hard-fought 60-50 loss to the Hurricanes on Tuesday night at the BankUnited Center. The 18 points given up by the Eagles in the second half equals the best defensive effort over the final 20 minutes by the Green and Blue since joining Division I in 2007-08. Behind 15 points in the second half by junior SHERWOOD BROWN (pictured) and the stout defensive effort, FGCU out-scored Miami 26-18 in the final frame, but couldn’t avoid falling to 2-3 on the young season. The Eagles’ three losses have come by a combined 12 points, while Miami picked up its fourth straight win to open the season, which have all come home. After trailing 42-24 at the end of 20 minutes, FGCU quickly cut the Miami lead in half, opening the second frame on a 9-0 run that was capped by a three-pointer from Brown that forced Miami coach Jim Larranaga to call a timeout at the 15:49 mark. Brown’s three cut the Miami lead to 42-33, as the Hurricanes went the first 6:55 without a point by shooting 0-for-10 from the field. Brown added a jumper in the final minute to finish with FGCU’s final 10 points, but the Eagles couldn’t make up any ground as All-ACC guard Malcolm Grant went 5-of-6 from the line over the final 80 seconds to seal the win and halt the FGCU comeback.
