Winter Purification

DIRECTOR’S MESSAGE

Friends of Rogers was recently presented with a leadership gift from Community Bank.

F ebruary is an ideal month for enjoying the peace and beauty

of our natural world. While November, December, and January were packed with holidays and celebrations, that frenzied pace is now behind us. The word February, from the Latin word Februarius, means ‘to purify.’ I can appreciate this as I walk the trails at Rogers Center and catch my breath on these cold winter days. There’s a change in the air, almost like a purification, as if even the snow and the ice know that Spring looms ahead. As the year enters its second month, shake off those winter blues with a visit to Rogers Center! On Feb. 2, join our Owl Prowl night hike. Under the light of the stars and moon, enjoy travels along the trails with the crunch of snow under foot, evening owl calls, and the wonder of the nighttime winter wilderness. We also have Learn to Ski on Feb. 24 for those new to cross-country skiing. All you need is the desire to learn this much-loved sport, and we’ll provide the equipment! Or pack a thermos of hot chocolate to enjoy while sitting inside

the Visitor Center, watching bird activity around the pond. There are many Rogers Center activities to enjoy throughout the year: Spring Frolic, Earth Fest, bird-watching, spring peepers, fossil digging, kayaking, hiking, fishing, flower walks, and picnicking! With the Super Bowl, Valentine’s Day, and Mardi Gras fast approaching, it’s nice to get a breath of fresh air to purify ourselves from the hustle and bustle of life. February offers us just that; another month of winter to enjoy.

See you on the trails,

Owl Prowl Join Friends of Rogers for a full-moon guided night hike and “Owl Prowl” during a trek through one of the many trails at Rogers Center. Beginning

after sunset, this adventure provides a unique opportunity to view nature from a new perspective, guided only by the light of the full moon. During the “Owl Prowl,” participants will attempt to call out some of the

nocturnal creatures known to frequent the area during this time of night. Barred owls are just beginning to mate and are vocal this time of the year. Depending on weather conditions, complimentary snowshoes

will be used for this hike.
