Head coach

FC Bayern München: Jürgen KlinsmannDate of birth: 30 July 1964Nationality: GermanPlaying career: SV Stuttgarter Kickers, VfB Stuttgart, FC Internazionale Milano, AS Monaco FC, Tottenham HotspurFC, FC Bayern München, UC SampdoriaCoaching career: Germany, FC Bayern München

One of the finest strikers in the world in the late 80s and early 90s, Jürgen Klinsmann is looking to prove just asinspirational on the bench as he was on the pitch, helping West Germany to triumph at the 1990 FIFA World Cup andthen winning EURO '96™ with a reunited Germany team. He retired from international football with 47 goals in 108appearances, making him the second most-capped player in German history.

Working under the likes of Arsène Wenger and Giovanni Trapattoni during a club career which took in spells at VfBStuttgart, FC Internazionale Milano, AS Monaco FC, Tottenham Hotspur FC and FC Bayern München, Klinsmannhas worked with plenty of great coaches. Scoring well over 200 league goals, Klinsmann was an exceptional talent, even though he was to end his club career with only two major trophies – the 1990/91 UEFA Cup won with Inter andthe 1995/96 edition won at Bayern.

Initially it seemed that Klinsmann had turned his back on football after hanging up his boots in 1998, moving to theUnited States to work in sports marketing. However, he made several appearances for Orange County Blue Star inCalifornia under the pseudonym Jay Goppingen – a reference to his home town – in 2003 to keep his eye in, beforeaccepting the job of Germany coach in July 2004.

Hired to lead the national team as hosts at the 2006 FIFA World Cup finals in tandem with his assistant and eventualsuccessor Joachim Löw, Klinsmann's young side shone on the way to taking bronze. Stepping down despite clamourfor him to stay on, Klinsmann said he yearned for normal family life but he was eventually tempted back to footballby his old side, Bayern, replacing Ottmar Hitzfeld in July 2008. FC Barcelona: Josep GuardiolaDate of birth: 18 January 1971Nationality: SpanishPlaying career: FC Barcelona, Brescia Calcio (twice), AS Roma, Al-Ahly Club, Dorados de SinaloaCoaching career: FC Barcelona B, FC Barcelona

A playing legend at FC Barcelona, Josep Guardiola was given the task of returning the club to the top of the domesticand European scenes when he took over from previous coach Frank Rijkaard in the summer of 2008. After twotrophyless terms at the Camp Nou, a gamble was taken by the Barça board who decided to promote the largely untriedGuardiola from the club's youth team.

'Pep,' as he was affectionately referred to as a player, won a host of honours with the Azulgrana between the yearsof 1990 and 2001 including six Spanish Liga titles, one European Champion Clubs' Cup, a UEFA Cup Winners' Cupand two Copa del Rey trophies. Having had an initial period at Brescia Calcio disrupted due to a four-month dopingban, Guardiola went on to play a handful of games for Fabio Capello's AS Roma before returning to Brescia. Hesubsequently finished his club career in Mexico with Dorados de Sinola in 2006 after a spell at Al-Ahli Club of Doha.A 1992 Olympic gold medallist in Barcelona with Spain, with whom he won 40 senior caps, Guardiola missed out onthe 1998 and 2002 FIFA World Cup tournaments through injury.

Given the opportunity to take up the reigns at Barcelona's B team in June 2007 with the objective of returning theteam to the Segunda División B, the 37-year-old succeeded in style while relying on a style of play that placed anemphasis on wide attackers and pressing defenders. His youngsters went on to win 28 games while remainingunbeaten and he gained a promotion himself to become the 15th Catalan-born coach to take the helm of the Barcelonafirst team.

Since first tasting UEFA competition with the UEFA European Under-17 Championship finals back in April 2002,Roberto Rosetti has enjoyed a rapid rise to the very highest levels of football. That was underlined when he was oneof the European referees chosen for the 2006 FIFA World Cup. He was given four appointments in Germany, includingthe second-round meeting between Spain and France, and at 1.90m was the tallest official at the finals.

The Turin-based hospital manager, who enjoys playing tennis in his spare time, has been a highly-regarded matchofficial in Italy for some years and earned his FIFA international badge in 2002. One of his first major continental clubappointments came when he took charge of the 2004 UEFA Intertoto Cup final between FC Schalke 04 and FC SlovanLiberec. Rosetti, who speaks English and French as well as his native Italian, worked at the 2003 FIFA U-20 WorldCup and then, in summer 2005, had three games at the FIFA Confederations Cup, which served as an ideal warm-upfor the World Cup the following year.

He followed that with two UEFA Champions League matches in the 2005/06 campaign, along with three in the UEFACup. When relaxing away from sport, Rosetti enjoys reading and watching movies, and took charge of four UEFAChampions League matches in 2006/07, including Liverpool FC's 1-0 defeat of PSV Eindhoven in the quarter-finalsecond leg. He ended the following club season by taking charge of the UEFA Champions League semi-final secondleg between Chelsea FC and Liverpool and opened UEFA EURO 2008™, Rosetti opened the tournament by takingcharge of the first match between co-hosts Switzerland and the Czech Republic. He also refereed the quarter-finalbetween Turkey and Croatia and was then awarded the final, when Spain beat Germany 1-0.

MasterCard agreementAgreement has been reached with MasterCard, one of the world's leading payments system providers, to continueas an official partner of the UEFA Champions League for the new 2009-2012 cycle, and for the UEFA Super Cup in2009, 2010 and 2011. UEFA said that the three-year deal will run until the end of the 2011/12 football season andwill see MasterCard continue to leverage the sponsorship through their exclusive product category – payment systems.MasterCard joins Heineken, Sony and UniCredit as the fourth official partner for the 2009-2012 seasons. "We arevery happy to be renewing our relationship with MasterCard, one of the world's premier global brands," said UEFAGeneral Secretary David Taylor.

UEFA's key valuesUEFA President Michel Platini has presented eleven key values – appropriately, the same number as a football team– that should serve as the basis for UEFA's future activities and dialogue, on behalf of European football, with thepolitical, economic, social and sporting world. Mr Platini highlighted the eleven values in his address to representativesof UEFA's 53 national associations, delegates from the world football family and guests at the XXXIII Ordinary UEFACongress in Copenhagen, Denmark, on 25 March. The values give priority to football and cover areas such as respect, good governance and autonomy, grassroots football and solidarity, sporting integrity and betting, financial fair play, the European sports model and sport's specificity.

Solidarity increaseUEFA and the European Club Association (ECA) have announced an increase in the solidarity percentage for thenext, 2009-2012 UEFA Champions League cycle, starting with the 2009/10 season. The solidarity percentage forclubs not taking part in the UEFA Champions League, which is earmarked for youth training programmes, will increasefrom the current 5 per cent to 6.5 per cent. Based on present revenue projections, this means that in season 2009/10,approximately €55m would be made available for redistribution to these clubs via the national associations andprofessional leagues – which is approximately €23m more than in the last season of the previous cycle. Including theadditional allocations also made available to clubs from leagues with no participants in the UEFA Champions League, the solidarity pot will amount to approximately €67m. Financial control panelUEFA's Executive Committee has approved the creation of a Club Financial Control Panel in what is a first concretemeasure to improve financial fair play in the UEFA club competitions. The decision, taken at the committee's mostrecent meeting in Copenhagen, follows recommendations by the UEFA Club Licensing Committee and the ProfessionalFootball Strategy Council. At UEFA level, the body will comprise financial and legal experts and will ensure that theclub licensing system is applied correctly. It will be composed of a chairman and up to eight members appointed bythe UEFA Executive Committee. "The main task of the panel will be to conduct financial audits on clubs in order toensure licences were correctly awarded and it may further conduct spot checks, and/or investigations, to ensure thatthe integrity rules are observed by the clubs," said UEFA. "This is the first step to have concrete measures to promotewhat we call financial fair play," UEFA General Secretary David Taylor told uefa.com. "We already have a club licensingsystem across Europe – a system based on national licensing by national associations or leagues. We feel that it isimportant to have something at European level, and [the panel] will look specifically at the finances of clubs and howthey are structured. As from next season, this panel will be doing continuous monitoring."

UEFA Champions League knockout stage: Did you know?

• Teams have recovered from a first-leg deficit to go through to the next stage on 21 occasions, although only once– AFC Ajax's defeat of Panathinaikos FC in the 1995/96 semi-finals – has a side gone through after losing the firstleg at home. The biggest losing margin a side has overturned was achieved by RC Deportivo La Coruña in the 2003/04quarter-finals when they fought back from a 4-1 defeat at AC Milan to win 4-0 at home.

• Sixteen ties have been decided on the away goals rule, including five where the triumphant team lost the first leg.

• FC Bayern München hold the record for the biggest first-leg lead with a 5-0 success at Sporting Clube de Portugalin this season's first knockout round, eventually going through 12-1 after a 7-1 home victory in the second leg.

• Ten ties have now gone to penalties, including the game between Arsenal FC and AS Roma in the 2008/09 firstknockout round. Five of these were finals – 1996, 2001, 2003, 2005 and 2008. The first two-legged tie decided onspot-kicks was PSV Eindhoven's 4-2 win against Olympique Lyonnais on 13 April 2005 after a 2-2 aggregate draw.

• In all, 17 ties have required extra time. So far seven ties have been decided by extra time alone: four quarter-finals,two first knockout round encounters and last season's semi-final between Chelsea FC and Liverpool FC.

• Real Madrid CF extended their record for knockout stage qualification in successive seasons. The 2008/09 campaignis the twelfth straight season since 1997/98 that they made it beyond the group stage, keeping them ahead ofManchester United FC, who appeared nine times in a row between 1996/97 and 2004/05. Overall Madrid have nowplayed in the knockout stage 13 times, one more than United and two more than Bayern.

• The 2008/09 first knockout round encounter between Bayern and Sporting featured more goals (13) over its twolegs than any previous UEFA Champions League knockout tie, Bayern prevailing 12-1. Lyon's 10-2 win against WerderBremen at the same stage of the competition in 2004/05 was the previous highest total.

• There has never been a knockout tie ending goalless after two legs. Nine have finished 1-0 on aggregate, mostrecently Manchester United's narrow victory against FC Barcelona in the 2007/08 semi-finals.

• Clarence Seedorf is the only player to win the European Champion Clubs' Cup with three clubs (AFC Ajax 1995,Madrid 1998, Milan 2003, 2007). Liverpool's Bob Paisley (1977, 1978, 1981) is the only coach to win three times.

• Ottmar Hitzfeld (BV Borussia Dortmund 1997, Bayern 2001) and Ernst Happel (Feyenoord 1970, Hamburger SV1983) are the only coaches to win the trophy with two clubs.

• Only five capital cities have been home to teams that have won the European Cup: Madrid (Real Madrid), Belgrade(FK Crvena Zvezda), Bucharest (FC Steaua Bucureşti), Amsterdam (Ajax) and Lisbon (SL Benfica).

• Rome was awarded the 2009 UEFA Champions League final after a decision by the UEFA Executive Committeeat its meeting in Ljubljana, Slovenia in October 2006. The Stadio Olimpico, home of AS Roma and S.S. Lazio, previouslyheld European Cup finals in 1977, 1984 and 1996 – Liverpool winning the first two games and Juventus the last –and was also the venue for the 1990 FIFA World Cup final between West Germany and Argentina. Other major eventsat the stadium include the 1987 IAAF World Championships in athletics and the 1960 Olympic Games, for which itwas constructed in 1953.
