Day 1:
Staff: Tony Claveria -‐ Technical Director Paco Serra – Staff Coach Santi Pou – Staff Coach
Part 1 - The History Founded in 1899 by Swiss Joan Gamper The colors were chosen from Gamper’s favorite team in Switzerland; FC Basel The club is owned by it’s members (175 000 of them from around the world, but mostly from Barcelona). There’s 99 000 seats in Camp Nou, so many of the members don’t have seats to the games... A few years ago, the stopped taking new members to prevent people from outside of Barcelona to take over the club. Part 2 – The Values
1. Leadership 2. Creativity 3. Success 4. Effort 5. Proximity 6. Emotion
It’s not just about beautiful football, but how it’s done (honestly and with respect ). Part 3 – Philosophy Offensive football Combinative football Youth system Ball is the main thing IDENTITY Affected by the coaches: Rinus Michels: Total Football Johan Cryuff: Gave importance to La Masia Frank Rijkaard & Ronaldinho: Brought Barça out of a dark period and brought smile
and hope back Pep Gardiola: Changed and improved what Cryuff started = best period. Expectations are very high
• if they win 4 games in a row with 20 goals for and 0 against but do it without passion and beautiful football, it will be a big disappointment

‘’The only thing we can control is how we play, not how many trophies we win. Every team tries to win trophies.’’ – Tony Claveria This is when and where the concept started (Rinus Michels): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M5YLG57a2GE Part 4 – 6 Pillars i) Spectacular Team • offensive play • iconic players from around the world • fair-‐play • legendary team ii) Philosophy of effort • ‘’La Masia’’ : one of the best academy in the world • comprehensive education: schooling and football • commitment to the club iii) Multicultural sports • basket-‐ball, handball, futsal, etc. iv) Social commitment • 0.7% of income goes to social projects • respect and non-‐violence philosophy v) Fans around the world • 175 000 members • 1500 supporters clubs vi) Global presence and innovation • use of latest social media and technology A unique sport club with a spectacular football style recognized worldwide and a deeply rooted commitment to society. The history of the club is affected by specific moments (wining moments): • Messi! • Iniesta scoring at Stamford Bridge
The club’s biggest success: 2010 – three best players developed at La Masia (Messi, Xavi and Iniesta). The whole philosophy of the club comes from within, as most coaches (if not all) for every sport (football, futsal, basket-‐ball, handball, etc.) are from Barcelona.

Part 5 – FCB Escola Part of the Barcelona system, but not as intense as La Masia Important to transmit the values of FCBarcelona
1. Ambition 2. Effort 3. Teamwork 4. Passion 5. Respect 6. Technical (skills)
• 6-‐12 yrs old train 2hrs/week • GK one training with the team, one with the GK coach • maximum 12 students
Breakdown of a session: • Introduction: coordination and motor aspects related to football • Pre-‐training: working on basic soccer techniques • Training: working on essential tactical and improvement of techniques Structure of the program: • 3 intra-‐leagues: U6-‐U8, U8-‐U10 and U10-‐U12 • games are 25 minutes long • no standings until U12 • players must play 50% of the game (minimum) • players are allowed to make mistakes – demanding but not critical • if a player misses training (for other activities i.e.: ski, basket-‐ball, etc.) he
doesn’t play; part of the philosophy • if a player trains hard he should play more • effort is very important, mistakes are not • don’t sub for mistakes FCBarcelona Youth System (Futbol Formatiu – La Masia) • 6 to 17 yrs old • train 3 to 4 times / week • 1.5 hrs / session • GK train with the GK coach • play regular competition each week-‐end + several tournaments during the year • goal every game: 3 pts, develop, make sure players are ready for the next level
• if the coach wins without the Barça philosophy; he’ll probably get fired • each player must play a minimum amount of minutes per game • each player is usually signed for 2 yrs (one year to prove themselves) • main objective: play beautiful football, develop and win like a family Structure:

• U8 to U12 (7 aside) • U13 to U17 (11 aside) • U18, Second team and pro • everyone plays 2 yrs up
Methodology • The style of playing is absolutely the same, but the main difference between
them is the competition. • The annual program is a little different because of the competition. • The Escola work with blocks of training period relating to technical and tactical
concepts focusing into the basics of the the game and the main principles of their football style.
• In the Youth System (La Masia) system, the coach decides when to work on different concepts (given by the director of the youth system) depending on the competition. Escola = trials Youth system = scouted Coaching Styles • -‐Orientation • -‐Individual / Group explanations • -‐Adapted Vocabulary • -‐Guided vocabulary:
o allow players to make mistakes and try o give them pointers / rules / advice

The Gardiola Philosophy: ‘’I have the ball, I pass the ball. I have the ball, I pass it again.’’
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pk1DQBruwnQ Xavi Hernandez technical magic:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i724t2X6jjs Broken down into 3 moments :
Moment 1 : Before the action -‐what do I have to do? -‐Am I ready to do it? -‐Space: Orientation, body balance, etc. Moment 2: Execution -‐How I execute the action? Moment 3: After the action -‐What do I do after the action; my reaction. Technical Content: P-‐A-‐D-‐E Perception (how good and quickly I can think) + Analysis + Desicion = Cognitive Speed Execution -‐Balance – coordination -‐Natural position of the body -‐Adjusted ‘’tension’’ – need to play relaxed Example of session
Objective -‐ Passing Contents -‐ Short passing Keypoints -‐ Use the inside of your foot (advice) *a drill is only as long as they need to get it right or they don’t work hard enough to make it work (motivation)
