July marked two years that the education program at Healing Hands International has been in existence. We have been challenged beyond what we thought we could handle but blessed beyond all we could imagine. Our journey has been one of trial and error, trying to determine what works best for teachers in a country where educational opportunities are limited, where the culture is vastly different from our own, and where supplies and books are non-existent. In addition, we were met with the use of instructional strategies that were outdated and ineffective.

Although there have been disappointments and failures, we have also experienced great success and accomplishment. Teachers are doing amazing things in classrooms both at the College Chretienne de Bonnett School in Ganthier and at the Academie Chretienne de Erudits in Santo. Teachers are excited about teaching and excited about what their children are learning. Through donations and gifts, we have been able to supply the teachers and children at Ganthier and Santo with the materials and books they need to teach effectively.

In August, we implemented our newest endeavor. We held the first of five Education Seminars for teachers and principals from five different schools in the Port-au-Prince area. By hosting seminars for multiple schools, we are able to reach more teachers thereby impacting more children.

Each school was asked to select five of its best teachers plus the principal to attend the 2-day seminar. Groundwork was laid that will be the basis for learning throughout the 2014-2015 school year. Our main goal is to teach methods of interactive teaching and learning particularly in the area of reading. Instruction in Haitian schools is made up of memorization and recitation, and children are not involved in their learning; they aren’t allowed to talk and interact with each other or the teacher. Therefore, our goal is to show teachers that there are other, more effective ways to instruct.

The first seminar was a huge success! We had 26 teachers and principals from five different schools in attendance. In addition, we are also able to use five teachers who have emerged as teacher leaders from Ganthier and Santo. Jesula Otella, Carole Jean Philippe and Junia Polynice are all kindergarten teachers from Ganthier. Madeline Joseph, a 3rd grade teacher, and Marise Antoine, a kindergarten teacher from Santo joined the other three in assisting in the leadership of the seminar.

We began the relationship building process with the teachers as well as introduced the importance of the brain and its need for active involvement in learning. Read aloud and responding to reading was also introduced. In addition, we were able to supply each school with a set of science tradebooks and a set of story books.

We are excited about the coming year and what God has planned for this ministry. We plan to host four more seminars, one in October, January, March and May. We welcome your prayers and gifts as we seek to glorify God in all we do. Written by Dr. Bobbie Solley, Director of Education If your church, school, or organization is interested in participating with the Education Ministry, please contact our Director of International Education, Bobbie Solley at 615-832-2000.

Healing Hands International and the Philo Road Church of Christ in Urbana, Illinois partnered to host an Agricultural workshop with the Fort Defi-ance Church of Christ in Fort Defiance, Arizona this summer. Since 2011, HHI has worked with several Novajo churches in the area, promoting sustainable Agriculture in the Navajo community of Arizona. One of those churches, the Kayenta Church of Christ in Kayenta, has been especially successful in using their garden as an evangelistic tool. Along with providing for the needy in the community, they have brought people into their church family through this endeavor.

When the Ft. Defiance Church of Christ heard of the success at Kayenta, they became interested in beginning their own Sustainable Agriculture work and asked HHI to come to present an Ag workshop for their church. HHI has become increasingly aware of the need for relief and develop-ment efforts here in the USA (in addition to our international work) and jumped at the opportunity to again minister to the Navajo. Our Agriculture Director, Carl Burkybile, agreed travel with a group from Philo Road to Arizona.

The church, together with our HHI Agriculture team, developed four drip irrigated raised planting beds over the course of a week. In addition to the garden beds, the team assembled the framework for a 12 x 24 greenhouse, which will supplement the church’s garden as this area of Arizona is at a high elevation and with colder temperatures, the growing season is short. The workshop was the start of what will surely become another success story in the Navajo community. The Ft. Defiance church family was eager to learn about this new holistic way of ministering to their neighbors. “This will be the first trip of many to the Ft. Defiance church”, says Carl Burkybile, Director of Agriculture. “In October, we hope to send an HHI representative to teach rain water harvesting.”

Emma, who made the trip to Arizona with our Agriculture Director, said of the trip, “I loved getting to help out the church in Fort Defiance and to meet new people who are learning about Christ in a completely different part of

our country”. She added, “I learned that even doing a couple of things for people can change their lives and how they live. These people now have a garden, can eat better, and save money. Small things can truly make a big difference.” And this workshop truly has made a difference in lives already. Pam, wife of Terry, the Navajo preacher of the church, cried tears of joy after the workshop has been completed. Zach, another participant from Philo Road said, “We were exposed to a different culture and it opened our eyes. It was cool to see how they do things. I saw how [the Navajo] needed help and it was great to make a difference”. Other comments from the trip participants included: “You don’t need lots of training to help people...small things can make a big difference”, “Some-times availability is more important than ability when it comes to serving others.”, “Get involved in mission work...get your feet wet and grow in service as you grow”, and “This was an amazing experience. You’ve got to talk to somebody, get involved, then go do it!”

We are looking forward to hearing many more stories of how God is working through HHI to minister to the Navajo and how they, in turn, are ministering to their communities. We covet your prayers and support for this life changing ministry. And as we always say, first the bread, then the Bread of Life. To learn more about our Agriculture Programs, please contact Carl Burkybile at 217-898-0425.

The beginnings of a new well in Kajiado, Kenya began several weeks ago. On our blog, we asked you to pray for the success of this well. We asked you to pray for our drilling team to be able to locate an abundant clean water source in the very dry village of Kajiado. God answered that prayer in ways we couldn’t have imagined when this well project started. In this area of Kenya, drought is recurrent, and many struggle to survive from day to day. Healing Hands International has provided food relief and agricultural training several times in the region, but without an accessible and dependable source of clean water, people are not able to use their learned skills effectively. In Kajiado, women and their female children usually begin their day at 6:00 a.m., when they rise and walk 7.5 km to the nearest water source to their homes. It is typical to return from the long journey around 2:00 p.m. HHI recognized the need for a clean water well in this area was great and partnered with Christian Relief Fund to drill a well for the people of Kajiado. The art of well drilling is neither easy nor predictable, and not every hole that is drilled into the ground results in a clean water well.

The whole community gathered and was excited to see the drilling crew arrive and start work. Excitement turned to cautious optimism, and then quiet hope as the crew drilled deeper and deeper without hitting water. A hand pump, the typical mechanism for channeling clean water from a well, does not work efficiently at depths greater than 300 ft. As the drilling crew hit 200,

250, and 300 feet without water the community became increasingly concerned. The crew drilled to 400 and then 500 ft without hitting water.

After nearly losing all hope, the crew finally hit water at 590 feet. They continued drilling, attempting to penetrate a better supply of water and hit another aquifer at just over 700 ft of depth.

Locating water was definitely a blessing, but on the other hand, it made matters more complicated. Hand pumps simply do not function at such a depth. There was no electricity within miles of

this location for an electric pump, and a diesel pump would be too expensive to operate in such a remote area.

What good is it to know there is clean water in the ground if it cannot be extracted? The only

way for this well to be useful was if the pressure of the groundwater was great enough to raise the static level (the distance from the land surface to the water in the well under non-pumping conditions) to at least 300 ft from the surface.*

The drilling crew let the well sit overnight and measured the static level of the water the next morning. The water level had risen to 450 ft within 140 ft of the surface, definitely within the reach of a manual pump! “Of all the wells we’ve worked on, this is only the second time that’s happened. It’s got to be God’s handy work.” says Joseph Smith, Director of Operations/ Water Projects.

This well should have never ended up as a functioning clean water well, but by God’s grace, it did. All the glory to God the Father. To learn more about clean water projects, please contact Joseph Smith at 615-832-2000. * Static levels do often come up in a well over time, but it is rare for the level to rise that much.

Fruit, in the form of six new businesses, is being produced as a direct result of Healing Hand International’s Christian Women’s Busi-ness Conference held in Chennai, India this past February. These new businesses include: Curries and Spices Center, Embroidered Tunics, Breakfast Center, Custom Made Baby Clothes, Matching Sarees (Saris) and Blouses, and a Tailoring Center.

One hundred sisters registered for the conference, 80 from the Chennai area and twenty from various villages. Sheela Immanuel coordinated sisters attending from the Chennai area and Prasanthi Rao, Healing Hands Woman Worth a Million India representative, coordinated ladies traveling in from 7 different villages.

Ladies who attended the conference followed a scripturally based curriculum guide called the Christian Women’s Business Manual. The

curriculum guide is based on two important components, godly principals and examples as revealed in the Bible and time proven successful business concepts.

The Christian Women’s Business training initially used ideas gleaned in Ghana; those ideas were com-plied and the first draft of the business

manual was written and implemented in Haiti,

then in India and most recently, Mozambique.

The concept of micro business loans is to give sisters opportunity to establish their own small businesses and pay back the loans which will then be offered to other sisters who wish to have the same opportunity.

Please pray for these and other sisters for business opportunities yet to come. And, in all things, join us in giving glory and thanks to our Lord from whom all blessings flow.To learn more about the Women Worth A Million program, please contact Lydia Steger at 615-832-2000.

Healing Hands International’s very first shipment was a container of medical supplies to Romania. Now, nearly 25 years later, we are still outfitting medical groups with medical supplies.

We recently accumulated a large number of plastic examination gloves, and instead of sending them all to one place, we decided to divide them up between several organizations.

We provided gloves to Blessings Hospital, Health Talents International, Harding Nursing Program, Harpeth Hills, Rebecca Dorris (Chinese Orphanages), Disaster Assistance, Made in the Streets, Baja Missions, Baxter Clinic, Hope for Haiti’s Children, Live Beyond, Partners in Progress, and Teethsavers.

These works represented many countries, including Malawi, Guatamala, Tanzania, Haiti, China, Belize, Kenya, Mexico, Honduras, and Cambodia. We thank you for your partnership in spreading the gospel through medical work. We look forward to many more opportunities to spread good through this ministry!

Joining the Fight Against Ebola in West Africa

7Fall 2014

For the past few weeks, the word “Ebola” has permeated our vocabulary. This deadly disease has already taken thousands of lives in West Africa, and without assistance, many more will suffer. We rejoice that the life of Dr. Kent Brantly, a Christian who was working in Liberia, has been spared; and we are convicted by his request: “Continue to pray for Liberia and the people of West Africa, and encourage those in positions of leadership and influence to do everything possible to bring this Ebola outbreak to an end.”

Ebola is becoming an ongoing crisis in western

Africa. The Center for Disease Control states, “The 2014 Ebola outbreak is one of the largest Ebola outbreaks in history and the first in West Africa.” Medical workers are struggling to keep up with consistently growing patient

needs. Healing Hands International is staged to send the desperately needed medical supplies to the area and we need your help. Although there are several countries

infected with the Ebola virus, our strongest contacts are in Liberia, hence the decision to send supplies there.

Assisted by the church in Sanniquellie, Liberia, we will be distributing supplies to the city’s local hospital. Healing Hands will send a container including surgical gowns, gloves, face masks, sharps containers, and other personal protection supplies. Your support means that medical workers will have the tools necessary to treat the increasing number of Ebola patients. As always, your gifts will also open the door to sharing the gospel with those in need.

We urge you to join us in prayer for God’s intervention in this dire situation and we also ask you to consider a gift to provide medical supplies in Liberia during this time.

‘For I will restore you to health And I will heal you of your wounds,’ declares the LORD. –Jeremiah 30:17a In donating toward the effort to fight Ebola, please note checks with “Ebola” or visit our website, www.hhi.org to donate online.

“ We urge you to join us in prayer for God’s intervention in this dire situation and we also ask you to consider a gift to provide medical supplies in Liberia

during this time.”

In January of 2010, when an earthquake shook the tiny country of Haiti, HHI quickly responded (along with many other organizations), with aid and emergency items. However, after the media left, and aid organizations completed their relief efforts, Healing Hands’ task had just begun.

When Healing Hands International decided to become intimately involved with Haiti after the earthquake hit, Harry Hames agreed to serve as our Haiti Relief Coordinator. He made numerous trips to the country, and coordinated our initial relief effort there.

HHI has been present in Haiti for the past four years, moving through the sometimes grueling transition of relief into development and sustainability. We believe that relief work after a disaster opens doors to people’s hearts for longterm relationships in a very powerful way. Presently, HHI is involved with development projects in Haiti through the Clean Water projects, Education development, and Women Worth A Million.

Our dream for Haiti has always been the same, whether we are providing emergency tents and water filtration systems, training teachers in the latest teaching methods, or teaching women in business skills and practices. Our long term vision motivates us to keep working in an area when others have come and gone. We want people to know Christ, and such a dream is rarely fulfilled quickly or easily.

We are officially finished with the relief phase of Haiti, and we are so thankful for the long term projects Harry Hames has helped initiate. After 4 years, Hames made the decision to retire from HHI this summer. We are so grateful for his service and everything he has brought to the work in Haiti and the Healing Hands table.
