CRISIS MINISTRIES IS NOWONE80 PLACENEW NAME, SAME ORGANIZATION YOU’VE KNOWN FOR YEARS

Imagine for a minute you never heard of Crisis Ministries.

Imagine you are in the darkest hour of your life. You

have nothing to eat, nowhere safe to stay, and no hope

of getting help. If you heard on the street about a place

called Crisis Ministries, would you think of it as a place

to turn your life around? Would you want to come

home every day with the reminder you’re in crisis?

Now imagine you haven’t made a financial contribution,

or served a meal in the soup kitchen, or visited for a

tour. What would you think happens inside the walls

of a place called Crisis Ministries? Would you assume

homeless people are getting help with education and

employment? How about healthcare and legal services?

Does it sound like a place where people are returning to

self-sufficiency?

Now think about One80 Place.

What does that organization do?

THE JOURNEY TO ONE80 PLACE…

About a year ago, we conducted a professional survey

of our donors, volunteers, staff, and leaders asking

what they knew about Crisis Ministries, why they cared

about the organization, and how they would identify

the “core” of our mission. The single most important

thing we learned was that people did not understand

the breadth and depth of what we do, and the name

Crisis Ministries didn’t start the conversation well,

if at all.

FINDING ONE80 PLACE…

We ask a name to do a lot, don’t we? It needs to be

intriguing and reflect the work of the organization. It

should inspire participation. People should be drawn to it.

We considered lots of options. Some names sounded

too corporate – like a government entity, or like a real

estate agency. Others really didn’t sound like anything,

wh i le some had so ma ny word s , no one cou ld

remember where we started!

But when we hit on the number “180”, everything

snapped into focus.

When we open our new shelter, our organization will have 180

beds for homeless people who want to turn their lives around.

“Doing a 180” means just that - turning around.

When we write the name of the organization as One80,

starting with “one” reminds us that our mission is ending

homelessness one person at a time, one family at a time.

The tag line Begin Again is short, but powerful. It succinctly

sums up the message we’re sharing with our guests - we can

help you begin again.

So much has happened for our organization in the past

few years. Our services have evolved and our budget

has grown. We’re moving into our new shelter. And

now we’ve got a new name.

But our mission stays the same: to end homelessness

one person at a time, one family at a time. We’re the

same organization you’ve known and loved for 30 years,

working toward another 30 years. For more information

on our name change and to learn more about our

supportive programs, visit www.one80place.org.

WE’RE COMMITTED TO YOUR EXPERIENCE!

We get one question more often than any other...

HOW CAN I HELP?

And if you’ve been to our downtown campus during

construction to make a financial contribution or to drop

off material goods, it hasn’t been easy.

But we’ve got good news! The Bakker Donation Center in

our new building will serve as the hub for visitors making

donations to One80 Place. The center is located at the front

of the new building with plenty of parking and a covered

entrance. Inside, you’ll find trained volunteers to help

you, answer questions, and make sure your experience

as a donor is top-notch.

Before visiting the Bakker Donation Center, please help us

by reviewing information on our website about making

financial contributions and donating material goods. For

example, we don’t accept some items - like clothing,

books, and household goods - because we partner with

other organizations to provide these items to our guests.

If you have questions, our Development team is available

to help. Give them a call at 843.723.9477.

DID YOU KNOW…?

Veterans are disproportionately homeless.

That’s one reason we’re expanding the number

of beds reserved for male Veterans in our new shelter.

Our original facility had 14 beds, and our new shelter

has 40 beds (as well as laundry and bathroom facilities

in the new Veterans Dormitory).

Homeless people are more l ikely to suffer

from illness and injury than people who are

housed. Our new Health Clinic, funded in part through

gifts from the Roper St. Francis Physicians Endowment,

offers a well-designed space for volunteer physicians

and medical professionals to treat our guests. The new

clinic even has a room outfitted specifically for dental

services, which is a new service we’ll be able to provide.

Nutrit ious food from a reliable source is a

challenge for people who are homeless. The

Zucker Community Kitchen offers a commercial space

to prepare more than 200,000 meals a year for homeless

and hungry people in our community. Importantly, the

space will be home to the RISE Program, an employment

training opportunity that helps highly motivated guests

prepare for jobs in commercial kitchens.

We’ve almost funded the new shelter 100%

through donat ions f rom the communit y.

With your help, we can move in debt free. Wish us

well with a special gift for the new shelter by visiting

www.one80place.org/donate.

DALE MAKES A 180!

Dale became homeless last year after losing his job

in a corporate lay-off. Dale had worked for the same

company for a number of years and the loss of his

job lead to severe depression. He found it hard to

complete his daily tasks and maintain suitable

living conditions. He decided it was time to change

his life and came to One80 Place. After a week of

working with his case manager, it became apparent

that Dale had a passion for cooking. He enrolled in

our ServSafe® program to learn the basics of food

preparation and safety. He passed the course and

almost immediately gained employment with a

local restaurant. Dale qualified for Rapid Rehousing

due to stable employment and moved into his

own apartment.

Congratulations, Dale! You turned your life around!
