The project will greatly enhance CCC’s capacity to serve children, older adults, and families in Greater Houston, and it represents the next huge step on the agency’s journey to meet the diverse needs of multiple generations and cultures. The New Horizons project will add nearly 24,000 square feet of program space to CCC, which will help the organization serve an estimated 5,000 more families each year. The project involves constructing a twostory facility to house an adult day care center and multipurpose community space and converting a storage building into a recreation center for atrisk youth. The new rec center will also double as an emergency shelter to assist the City of Houston with disaster response during times of crisis, such as the severe weather that displaced hundreds of Houstonians around Memorial Day 2015. Led by a steering committee that is cochaired by Board Chair Peter Chang, M.D., Ph.D., Board ViceChair Kenneth Li, and Board Member Jarvis Cheung, Sc.D., the capital campaign has already raised nearly 65% of the funds needed for the project. Celebrating New Horizons

NAEYC Accreditation Renewed

This summer the National Association for the Education of Young Children(NAEYC) renewed its accreditation of CCCrsquos Early Learning Center for a fiveshyyear term NAEYC accreditation represents a mark of high quality in earlychildhood education and in order to be accredited a program must maintainseveral standards such as employing an educated and qualified teaching staffkeeping a low childshyteacher ratio in each classroom and utilizing an evidenceshybased curriculum that fosters all areas of child development

CCCrsquos Early Learning Center which is a member of United Way of GreaterHoustonrsquos Bright Beginnings initiative continues to be the only NAEYCshyaccredited program for young children in Southwest Houstonrsquos 77036 ZIPcode making CCC an important source of highshyquality early childhoodeducation for children and families in that area Only 4 of childcare centersin Harris County are accredited by one of the primary national accrediting

A Matter of Balance

With support from Harris County Area Agency on Aging CCC has begunproviding an evidenceshybased fall prevention program called A Matter ofBalance to older adults in Southwest Houston This program helps adults aged60 or older overcome their fear of falling and increase their physical activity sothey can maintain strength flexibility and balance

The fear of falling is important to overcome because it actually places olderadults at greater risk for falling If older adults are afraid of falling they maylimit their physical movement which can cause their bodies to become frailerand more susceptible to injury

A Matter of Balance has already reached nearly 60 older adults at threedifferent locations thanks to the coordination of new Program CoordinatorsAlexandria Luu and Jenny Xi With Alexandria and Jennys help hard workand passion for serving older adults CCC will continue to provide exceptionalquality service to the people of our community

Bellaire Corridor Outreach through Tea Talks

In August CCC and Southwest Management District (SWMD) joined togetherto host a series of tea talks at several locations including Welcome PlazaDynasty Plaza Dun Huang Plaza and Sterling Plaza The tea talkswhich were coordinated by CCCs new Community Outreach Manager RachelPeng covered a broad range of topics relevant to the Southwest Houstoncommunity including preparation for Houston hosting the Super Bowl in2017 the security services available in the community the benefits of localbusinesses accepting credit cards and creative ideas to promote businessgrowth around Bellaire Boulevard such as an Asian food festival

The tea talks also generated dialogue among local entrepreneurs on how todraw consumers to the area and grow local businesses Exciting possibilities forthe future of CCC and SWMDrsquos partnership include an Asian Restaurant Week(in the style of Houston Restaurant Weeks) food festivals and market fairs

CCC is proud to share that our Senior amp Social Services Director Kelley Lou waschosen as one of 23 young leaders from across the nation to participate in theWhite House Initiative on Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders E3Ambassador program The programrsquos aims are to educate engage andempower young leaders in the Asian AmericanPacific Islander (AAPI)community so they can increase awareness around critical issues affectingAAPIs and to highlight key federal programs and resources that may beunderserving AAPIs

CCC is pleased to announce that Ben Lind (林義平 ) has joined our staff tomanage the Chinese School and English as a Second Language (ESL)program Bilingual in English and Chinese Ben holds a Bachelor of Arts inLinguistics and Asian Studies from the University of Texas at Austin and helearned Chinese at National Taiwan Normal University in Taipei Afterstudying in Taipei Ben worked as a teacher with students ranging in age from5 to 97 years old After spending seven years in Taiwan Ben returned to theUS to teach at the University of HoustonshyDowntown

Ben brings to his new role as CCCrsquos Language Program Director 15 years ofexperience in teaching and education administration We welcome Ben andare excited to have him on our staff

Welcome to New Language Program Director

CCC is pleased to announce that Ben Lind (林義平 ) has joined our staff tomanage the Chinese School and English as a Second Language (ESL)program Bilingual in English and Chinese Ben holds a Bachelor of Arts inLinguistics and Asian Studies from the University of Texas at Austin and helearned Chinese at National Taiwan Normal University in Taipei Afterstudying in Taipei Ben worked as a teacher with students ranging in age from5 to 97 years old After spending seven years in Taiwan Ben returned to theUS to teach at the University of HoustonshyDowntown

Ben brings to his new role as CCCrsquos Language Program Director 15 years ofexperience in teaching and education administration We welcome Ben andare excited to have him on our staff
