Page 3: Fall 2010 - Season 46- Season Summary

November 30, 2010

Fall semester was a fantastic season for Studio One. Our teams worked very hard to create a quality

show and high quality marketing campaign. I am very proud of our students.

Our reporters and producers created very strong content this semester. All of our shows included

innovative interviews, creative packages, outstanding photography and detailed weather reports.

Strong content does not happen by accident. It is the result of hard work, meeting deadlines,

investigating every aspect of a story and remaining positive when challenges arise. Bravo to

everyone who produced strong content this season!

The production crew made every show look very professional. Camera angles were creative,

sound was mixed well and when challenges came up, the crew handled them with skill and

professionalism. It was especially fun to see how easily camera operators rotated to different

cameras. They never skipped a beat!

Promoting and marketing Studio One is an important part of this project. Our marketing team

developed some very creative ways to promote the show. The new tag line, “It’s your future. Let

the show begin.” was a great reflection of what we are all about. It was fun to see it used to

promote the show. Recruiting was simply stellar this year! We received the highest number of

applicants in 5 years. What a wonderful effort by everyone. Bravo!

Special thanks to everyone who helped with our community projects. “Operation Christmas

Child” and the Red Kettle campaign were important ways for us to contribute to our community.

Successful organizations are obligated to serve their communities and these special efforts were

well planned and delivered.

To those who are graduating, you now become a member of our alumni family. Remember our

four themes: “Quality, Teamwork Professionalism and Communication.” I hope you keep in

touch. You will be missed!

Sincerely,

Barry S. Brode

Director of Television

“Air traffic control doesn’t have to be stressful. You have to do what works for you. This job is not for

everyone,” says Terra Jorgenson retired pilot, air traffic controller and now university professor. “Knowing

people’s lives are in your hands [is one of the biggest reasons for stress],” explains Jorgenson. To help deal

with job pressure, aviation employees have access to therapists who help them work through their problems.

Most facilities also have a “quiet room” for reading or meditation. Find out more about this fast-paced career

and how Jorgenson prepares students to meet work-day challenges.

STUDIO ONE HIGHLIGHTS EDUCATION SURVEY TRENDS AND REALITY TV SHOW

CONTESTANT

Award-winning news show airs on Channel 3 in Grand Forks

GRAND FORKS, N.D. – Learn about some changes in teacher evaluations and how one kickboxing instructor

fought his way onto a popular television show on the next edition of Studio One.

Some studies indicate the United States’ level of education is suffering compared to other countries. In the past,

educators have used the No Child Left Behind Act to evaluate the abilities of teachers. Now the use of value-

added modeling is being used nationwide. This system calculates the value teachers add to their students’

achievement based standardized test scores. Learn how this model may improve the public school system.

Also, one man’s dreams are coming true thanks to a reality TV show. Pablo Garza teaches kickboxing at the

University of North Dakota and is a Mixed Martial Arts fighter. He had the opportunity to be on The Ultimate

Fighter, a reality TV show on SPIKE network. Garza tried out for the show in North Carolina and was selected

out of more than 600 fighters. “Just being on the show, being part of the UFC gives you a lot of exposure.” He

hopes this exposure and his hard work will make him a “big name” in this sport.

STUDIO ONE FEATURES SEGMENTS ON FATIGUED DRIVING AND

DISEASE CONTROL RESEARCHER

Award-winning news show airs on Channel 3 in Grand Forks

GRAND FORKS, N.D. — Learn to prevent driving while fatigued on next edition of

Studio One.

According to the U.S. Center for Disease Control and Prevention, 30 percent of

Americans don’t get enough sleep. Studies in Europe and Australia show that driving

while fatigued can be just as dangerous as driving under the influence of alcohol.

University of North Dakota Police Captain Dan Lund says that some drivers ignore the

occasional head nods behind the wheel. He explains that a head nod means the driver is

unconscious for 12 seconds. Find out more about the dangers and how to avoid driving

while tired.

Also, a UND biology professor, Dr. Jeff Vaughan, explains how mosquitoes and ticks

can be pesky and annoying, but also deadly. There are many different types of diseases

transmitted by these bugs, and he will discuss disease prevention techniques. Covering

pots of water or putting guppies in water tanks to eat mosquito larvae can make a

difference. Watch Studio One to hear more about this biologist’s research.

Changing the oil too frequently can also harm the environment. Tune in to find out how car

Also learn about a pedal-pushing art show that came to the North Dakota Museum of Art on the next edition of

adjusted than most. He is involved with different organizations to help change the current system

and to give foster kids a voice. Watch Studio One to learn about how Gawlick is traveling the

Goals and strategies The marketing team has developed goals and strategies to increase recruitment numbers, promote the show and

build teamwork within the program. Below are the goals the team planned to accomplish this semester. Feedback

from surveys and group meetings are included on this evaluation of Season 46’s goals.

Internal goals

What was planned:

Tailgating at homecoming football game o Hotdogs will be given away at booth o Bean bag toss

Potluck midway through the season

Bowling party

End of Season Party

What happened:

Homecoming parade – parade and float went well. The team ran out candy before the union. Brynn’s dad brought a fantastic pickup for the float. Tailgating event – epic fail. It was a good idea but there was already a lot of free food. Students at the event were there mostly to drink. Intern turn-out was not what was expected. Only two additional interns showed up to help with the event. Potluck – this event was scheduled after the recruitment deadline and ended up being too close to the end of season party. The event had a successful turnout. End of Season Party – over 30 attendees. | Event was hosted in Skalicky Rm. 211. | Cost per person was $4. This was considerably cheaper than in previous semesters. | played minute-to-win-it games after food.

Feedback:

For internal events have a sign-up sheet – if not that many people want to come – cancel the event. | Try to schedule events so that we can remind interns at least a few weeks in advance | Bowling party should be taken off the schedule – low turnout. They even had the team change the date and then the people that had us change the date didn’t even come.

Community service

What was planned:

Water Handout at Potato Bowl Run

Red Kettle Event

What happened:

Water Hand-Out – the event was fun but the weather was very cold. | The organization seemed grateful for our help. If we do this again, wear warmer clothes. Operation Christmas Child – this was additional event the marketing team decided to do. Overall it was a successful event and we had more donations than for other projects. | People were more willing to donate items than time. Red Kettle event – intern turnout was quite poor for this event. Some interns were at the mall way too long. Get other team leaders to push ideas for their teams. It was a good event and idea but we were volunteered for too many time slots. Not too many people had to be by themselves.| it was hard to find enough volunteers for this event. But people who helped with the event had fun.

Page 73: Fall 2010 - Season 46- Season Summary

Season 46 Season Summary Fall 2010

Feedback:

Tell interns about events earlier Have involvement from team leaders Two events or projects would be about the right amount of community service events. Volunteer for only one spot for projects like the Red Kettle Campaign.

Public awareness

What was planned:

Events and Promotions:

Stickers on coffee sleeves

Table tents

Posters

Bus Sign

Weekly Press Releases

Social Media

Facebook quizzes

Stories with national appeal will be posted on the YouTube channel

6 Booths on campus

T-Shirt days

Radio appearances

Nightlife

Homecoming parade

Tail gating

Memorial Union display case

Expanding markets

What happened/Feedback:

Stickers on coffee sleeves – This event isn’t that time consuming and it is inexpensive. It’s not an effective recruitment tool, from surveys but it is a good way to build awareness for the program/logo. Table Tents – they were good but the paper should be thicker. By the time they were put up for the third time, they looked pretty hashed. But it was good to have them up three times a semester. Jeff and Zach were harassed by the lunch lady. Posters – The design and size were good. They were a bit bigger than most other posters. The photos on the poster helped make the promo more interesting. Merrifield was not the most cooperative for finding a place for the posters. Victoria had to talk to a person on every floor before hanging posters. Bus Signs – UND reserved the buses for the month of October so we could not do this promotion. Try to beat UND next semester. Weekly press releases – went well Social Media – Facebook contests went well. Videos from the homecoming parade, radio, dress rehearsal, bowling and other events were posted and encouraged visits to the S1 Web page. Facebook quizzes – these were helpful in getting more traffic to the Studio One social media sites. Traffic also would pic up on Web site when in conjunction with Facebook posts. Stories with national appeal on YouTube Channel - the plan was to promote different videos on You Tube. That didn’t really happen this semester. Booths – Weather was not a good fit for the hot chocolate hand-out. This October was way too warm – we were handing out coco on 80 degree days. The hand-out allowed for conversation while preparing the coco. The hand out made telling people about the internship more comfortable because it wasn’t weird that you were still trying talk

Page 74: Fall 2010 - Season 46- Season Summary

Season 46 Season Summary Fall 2010

to them. The syrups were a good idea. Next year we should make a large sign that said the hot chocolate was free. Merrifield was a good place to have this booth because people seemed to have more time between classes and were hanging out. There was also a lot of traffic in the hallways of Merrifield. Wilkerson booth was cancelled because they charged $25 for the table fee. Wellness Center booth had its moments. Some strange people ended up at the booth. But it was hard to catch people, but at the Wellness Center seemed kind of fast paced. | I liked when we started bringing the promo items to give away such as the wristbands and the bags. Seemed to get more people to come talk to us. | The hot chocolate idea made sense for the fall booths, but in the end it didn't work out because of how warm it was. So I think that maybe something else could be given away that would be ok for both cool and warm weather. Students really liked the free hot chocolate (it would have been more of a hit if the weather cooperated!) T-Shirt days- T shirt days were kind of a bust because interns don't listen to the marketing team. Radio appearances – were fun | people do listen to the radio and it’s a great way to build awareness in the community even if everyone doesn’t plan on applying that hears the radio interview | Be careful what you promise the DJ what Studio One can do. He wanted to come on the show and kept on asking about it. The interns thought that he was joking but he was persistent in asking to come on the show. | DJ tended to make fun of people that mixed up song artists and titles. | Maybe only go on the radio during recruitment month. The 4 Wednesdays in October were the best interviews. Hockey Game/Night life – The past two nightlife events I have been to with Studio One haven't been very successful. We need to come up with a new creative way to market the internship. | Night life is tricky. I think if we could find out which events are most popular year after year and somehow tie in by sponsoring it that would be the best bet. | Try to get more interns (other than marketing team) to help out, especially on events such as night life, tailgating, homecoming, etc. It's more "powerful" when students can see how big we are and how united we are. | The one event that could have been a great success that wasn't, was the night life get together where we were going to watch the away Sioux game. We ended up not being able to watch the game, but we did draw quite a few people there. So, I think that that event should be kept, but next time make sure that the game was on TV. | We need to organize our Night Life event better, but we should attempt it again. | The nightlife event was successful except for the fact that the hockey game wasn't televised. | I would say to try the night life again as long as it isn't on a home hockey weekend. | Homecoming parade - PARADE WAS GREAT! I saw the float, it made Studio One look like a lot of fun. | Pickup added a professional touch to the float. Tail gating - Also, the tailgating was a good idea but I don't think it is something we should continue doing just because it isn't really the right atmosphere for student organizations (unless its fraternities). | I think we need to push the homecoming parade and tailgating events & try to get team leaders to encourage participation. | Tailgating did not have the success that we would have hoped; students were more concerned with drinking than learning about internships. Memorial Union display case - Memorial Union booth looked great however I noticed that there was no one on the News Team present in the display. There should be someone from every team. | This was a better display because it didn’t look too junky. But in the future an eisle would have been handy to get the display poster at eye level. Be prepared to wrap a box to get the poster up to a different height if no eisle is available. There are no plug-ins in the display cases. Expanding markets – the marketing team did not have time to pursue new markets for the show Updated recruitment videos – this was an additional goal the team felt necessary to address rather than expanding markets.

Additional peer feedback: I think that non-marketing teamers should try harder to go to the intern only fun time events like the bowling party. Not sure how much you can do about that though. Don't be afraid to tell people how much you like Studio One when your just talking to people. You can promote it to friends or strangers you meet. If you talk about how much you like it when your not actually "on the job" it may seem even more credible I think the fun events with the addition of food will always bring in a lot of attention. People will always like to have fun and will always enjoy food. Maybe advertise to campus that we are wearing our tshirts and if you see someone with it, talk to them about the show. Or have us carry applications with us to give to those who notice shirts, or give prizes to those who notice the shirts...like how some radio stations use bumper stickers, and if a dj sees a car with a sticker, they are entered to win something. Basically just have some interaction with the tshirts, not just us wear them. All the recruitment events are good but some are just more affective than others. Make the class room presentations the best because that really gives students a chance to not only find out and see what Studio One is but to ask questions about it. Also the recruitment video is great but lets put some new people in it. Isn't it a bit old...? Also great energy at the booths on campus =) free hot chocolate is going to be a great way for people to stop by this winter so make them take a flyer to get the hot chocolate. Prize wheel is a great idea too, people love free stuff, I know I do!

Keep doing booths, classroom presentations, and involvement fairs. That is where the people that are most interested in finding internships will be. A lot of our recruitment events were successful as we saw a record number applicants. We took some risks and tried some new promotional events which sometimes paid off and sometimes didn't. Work hard and have fun! Learn from what didn't work for us and build on it. If we managed to get a high number of applicants and realized that we still didn't do everything right, you should be able to do it even better. Classroom presentations are always good and booths. I think it works best when Studio One interns are out talking to students. Again classroom presentations and booths are cheap and works best! Students need/like to see and hear in a personal way. Then they can also ask questions. We should do water or Gatorade or hand out upstairs in the “hand-out” area at the Wellness Center. There are also display boards at the Wellness Center. Another way to get involved campus would be to try to get the team involved with a league. Or maybe join a kickball league. Plan the first booth at least a week after the marketing team presentation– because it’s hard to coordinate timing without a meeting to plan the booths.

What happened:

Wrist band that has our Web site address and tag line featured, “It’s your future. Let the show begin.” Ordered string bags that had a large Studio One logo and Web address featured.

Feedback: Our promo items might need to be switched up a little bit or at least the wrist bands. I liked when we started bringing the promo items to give away such as the wristbands and the bags. Seemed to get more people to come talk to us. We received promo items from: Red Pepper 4-$10 certificates, Valley Dairy (10) certificates for caramel rolls or coffee, River’s Cinema (6) tickets

"Other" includes: previously interned students,

teachers, advisors, involvement expo, online

Feedback: Classroom presentations continue to be one of the most effective recruitment tools. | Maybe have marketing team come to 3 instead of 2 presentations a semester | Interns from other teams helps give the class a different perspective.

Audience Development:

What was planned:

20 audience members per show

What happened:

Feedback:

Other: Tour guides should get a little bit of training of what goes on in the editing bays and production control.

This would helps to memorize your script when you can put it into your own words when a person forgets the

script.

Try to get some more training in so that marketing team can have a better knowledge of what happens on other

teams.

Audience development evaluation Comments:

We feel overall this year went pretty well for the audience development team. Unfortunately, we did not meet our

goal of 20 audience members per show, but there were some unfortunate weeks. Some groups that are probably

worth calling again next year are Crookston High School media class, Red River video production class, Norwegian

students, and members from Ollie.

Recommendations:

The audience development team discussed and came up with ideas for the future teams. Calling teachers instead of

emailing them is much more effective, even if you have to be persistent. We recommend that you try to call

everyone instead of emailing them, if possible. A big thing we’d like to see a change in is the involvement with team

leaders. If team leaders encouraged their team members to get back to the audience development as soon as

possible or at all, we could’ve had a lot more possible audience members. Reporters did not give us contact

information in a timely manner or at all in most cases. A solution to that would be to create some sort of word

document or database that the reports could store the package name, the contact information for person in story,

and a little background information on the story. In most cases, if we even heard back from reporters they did not

give us sufficient information about the story to build audience members around that subject. Audience

development team should contact reporters and guests as soon as possible to get the best possible results. Also, for

next year, we think that it would be a good idea to try to invite more international students and possibly have

success with the dorms, if contacted early enough.

Classroom presentation analysis The goal of the Marketing Team was to go to a total of 35 classroom presentations. In the end, we totaled 45 classroom presentations. The team focused more on 100 level classes this season than we have in the past. The reason for this is we want to target a larger number of students at a younger age. The earlier and more frequently students hear about Studio One, the more likely they are to apply for an internship. Below are all of the classes that we spoke to. You can also see how many students signed up to hear more information about the program and the number of students that applied from each class.
