The six concerts that encompass our Fall for Jazz Series represent a stylistic diversity that is nothing less than a microcosm of our annual Jazz Festival. The festival’s international renown is a result of 25 years of adventurous programming

that provides listeners with a fascinating blend of traditional/contemporary jazz and all that’s at the current cutting edge of music.

That means that in six concerts we’ll take you on a fascinating journey from the world of tango (Montreal’s Quartango) and improvised chamber music (Mural from Norway and Australia), to some of what’s new and exciting in both avant-garde jazz (NY’s Darius Jones) and mainstream jazz worlds (NY’s Gretchen Parlato, Amsterdam’s Benjamin Herman), and the very special Great Classical Joint Reunion—where we’ll honour the memory of one of our most beloved local jazz haunts from the 70’s and 80’s.

Coastal Jazz is also all about community support—our Partner Series includes collaborations with some of the best arts organizations in Vancouver. Upcoming events include: Orkestra Futura (formerly the NOW Orchestra), the Sacred Music of Duke Ellington and Cross Border Jazz with the Cellar Jazz Club (an ambitious program to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the club).

There’s nothing else quite like it! See you there.

Ken Pickering, Artistic Director

The Great classical Joint

reunion

Hey jazz fans! The Joint is jumpin’ once again! A sure-to-be-memorable night, the Great Classical Joint Reunion will bring Vancouver musicians and fans together in a tribute to Vancouver’s legendary Classical Joint and to its longtime proprietor Andreas Nothiger.

‘The Joint,’ an intimate space on Carrall Street that closed in 1990, was home to some of the greatest musicians in the city for over 20 years. The reunion will feature a rhythm section of Classical Joint all-stars (including the great pianist Chris Sigerson, bassist Ken Lister, guitarist Michael Guild, and drummer Craig Scott) backing up a glittering array of players in a fantastic jam session. The ever-growing list of special guests includes the likes of Gavin Walker, Sal Ferreras, Alan Matheson, Michael Dunn, Bruce Freedman, Joani Taylor, Tom Keenlyside, Raphael Geronimo, Ron Samworth, Saul Berson, Marke Andrews, and Coat Cooke. And look forward to appearances by legendary Classical Joint bands like Oscar Nieto’s Flamenco Heresy. There will be lots of familiar faces, some Joint memorabilia, ‘dark coffees,’ and much more. So let’s get this party started!

Oslo-based guitarist/composer Kim Myhr comes from the rich, creative music scene in Norway. Although composition is a valued activity for Myhr (he was commissioned to write a piece for the Trondheim Jazz Orchestra), his main focus remains improvisation and long-term collaborations. One of his most important projects is MURAL with Australian saxophon-ist/flutist Jim Denley and fellow Norwegian and percussionist Ingar Zach. The trio’s debut CD, Nectars of Emergence (Sofa), released earlier this year, is a stunner. Andy Hamilton, writing in London’s Wire magazine called it “a quietly outstanding piece of Improv, a haunting world of breathtaking timbral beauty. An extraor-dinary creation.” Stef Gijssels in freejazz-stef.blogspot.com declared it “a fascinating listening experience. Denley’s saxophones and flute reduce music back to its pristine original nature of vibrating air, Zach’s use of percussion has a precision which is unequalled in building a sonic scene, and I have rarely heard a guitarist like Myhr, with a sound so sparse, so contained, yet equally telling more with a few chords than many others cannot create out of a zillion notes.” Nectars of Emergence is an attempt to refresh and renew improvised music. Quartango

When four classically trained musicians explore their passion for tango, the result is nothing short of mesmerizing. Montreal’s Quartango takes the genre in new directions, with impeccable arrangements, unexpected allusions to classical music, and a splash of humour, woven together by the elegant interplay of ensemble playing at its best. The group is Stéphane Aubin piano, Denis Plante bandonéon, René Gosselin double bass, and Antoine Bareil violin. Together they offer up a vast repertoire ranging from classic tangos to Astor Piazzolla’s tango nuevo. They also explore other genres—from jazz and Celtic music to waltzes and jigs. Quartango has performed all over Canada as well on the international stage from Ankara and Tokyo to Taipei, Paris, and New York, where they performed at Carnegie Hall with the New York Pops. The ensemble has recorded six acclaimed CDs for the Justin Time label. In a review of the latest release called El Fuego, the Montreal Gazette called the music “playful and intense, both whimsical and sophisticated. These musicians are accurate and intentional—with lush and powerful strings, forceful piano and a bandonéon that sounds effortless.” After 25 years of tangos,

Darius Jones Trio

Darius Jones is an extraordinary young alto saxophonist whose passionate and intense playing is all the rage in New York City these days. Born in Virginia, the 31-year old instrumentalist lets his soulful Southern roots shine through on his impressive debut recording, Man’ish Boy (A Raw and Beautiful Thing). “A phenomenal debut,” raves All About Jazz. The Boston Globe rated the disc one of the Top 10 Jazz Albums of 2009 while declaring that Darius “plays both raucously and sweetly, and he puts every genre at his disposal, from blues to swing to free improvisation.” London’s The Wire notes that

“with expressive glissandi as opulently sensual as that of Johnny Hodges, and a knack for flipping innocent melodic utterances into lines fraught with chancy harmonic and rhythmic ambiguities, Jones’s concept is proudly his own.” Combining gospel-inflected soul power with forward-looking expression, Darius Jones shows clearly the connection between juke joints and churches of the Deep South. His roof-raising tone and finely honed musical gifts are currently heard in bands led by William

The Gretchen Parlato band

“Parlato’s sense of subtle rhythmic interplay and understated theatrical nuance takes the ache of Frank [Sinatra] and implicates it throughout an improvisational-based esthetic that rests, most often, on Brazilian master-class moments from Caymmi and Jobim as well as classics by Charlie Parker, Gershwin, and Bjork… Her voice—scatting, cooing, leaning back then soaring—can leap through complex tempo and rhythmic shifts as if rising rapids.”—New York Press

Throughout the CD, Parlato’s extraordinary vocal calisthenics, immaculate sense of timing, and nuanced phrasing are in full bloom. “The most alluring jazz vocal album of 2009, ” declares Billboard magazine. The International Review of Music proclaims that “Parlato has been blessed with extraordinary talents. In a Dream belongs in the four or five Grammy nominations for Best Jazz Vocal Album.” The singer’s career has been on an ascendancy ever since she won the prestigious Thelonious Monk International Jazz Vocals Competition in 2004. In the years following, she’s toured internationally with her own band and as a guest with such artists as Wayne Shorter, Oscar Castro-Neves, and Dianne Reeves. Her recording credits include Terence Blanchard’s album Flow, Kenny Barron’s The Traveler, and Esperanza Spalding’s self-titled CD. Gretchen was also featured recently in the documentary film Icons Among Us: Jazz in the Present Tense. Undoubtedly, Gretchen Parlato’s time is now. benjamin Herman Quartet plays Misha Mengelberg

Dutch musician Benjamin Herman began playing saxophone at 13 and performing for audiences less than a year later. At 21 he received the Wessel Ilcken prize for Best Young Jazz Musician of the Year. Shortly thereafter he was invited to take part in the 1991 Thelonious Monk Competition, along with Joshua Redman, Chris Potter, and Eric Alexander. In 1994 he founded New Cool Collective—Holland’s hottest big band—an ensemble that blends salsa, punk, Afrobeat, free jazz, and surf music. With NCC and with his quartet, his gigs are inspired by the popular jazz of the dance floor, appealing to a broad cross-section of music aficionados. At the same time, he has explored the repertoire of composers such as Thelonious Monk, Jaki Byard, and Misha Mengelberg. “I have tried to interpret his [Mengelberg’s] music in my own way,” says Herman. His work is so well composed that interpretations of any kind are possible. Pianist Mengelberg is the iconic co-founder of ICP Orchestra, a groundbreaking Dutch group whose members include Han Bennink, Wolter Wierbos, and Ab Baars. Besides releasing two recordings of Mengelberg’s music, Benjamin has appeared on over 100 albums as a sideman or leader

Orkestra Futura: Meeting of the Minds

For this exciting new project, the ensemble explores the world of electronics and acoustic instruments and the connection between composed work and the world of improvised interpretation. The NOW Orchestra is unique in the world—an improvisational group with a distinct Vancouver stamp. Under Coat Cooke’s direction, the ensemble’s identity is derived from its unique brand of West Coast improvisation, extraordinary collaborations, and explorations with dance, spoken word, electronics, and inter-cultural music.

Rightly renowned for its longevity and creative output of improvised music, the NOW Orchestra has gained local, national, and international acclaim. Their impact has been documented through their recorded output with collaborators like George Lewis, Barry Guy, and Marilyn Crispell. In addition to their celebrated series of concerts in Vancouver, the NOW Orchestra has appeared at jazz festivals in Chicago, Berlin, and Lisbon.

The ensemble has taken an exciting evolutionary step and revamped its name and image. At a concert in November 2009, the ensemble was re-christened Orkestra Futura. The concert featured a cutting-edge program of technology that saw the ensemble conducted remotely by Pauline Oliveros in Oslo, Lisle Ellis in NYC, Paul Cram in Halifax, and John Oswald in Toronto.

Whether under its old name or under the new moniker, Orkestra Futura explores the world of improvisation, be it in collaboration with video mixing, dance, spoken word or straight-up music. The group continues to evolve in concert or on recordings—like the latest disc called Animal Tales on the NOW Orchestra label.

education, awards, and Youth Programs

TD High school Jazz Intensive

Nineteen students from the Lower Mainland were chosen through a competitive audition process to participate in the 2010 edition of the TD High School Jazz Intensive residency. This nine-day residency program gives students a chance to learn from some of the best musicians in the world. Jazz visionary and creative flutist, composer, bandleader, and educator Nicole Mitchell returned this year as resident artist and conductor to lead the band. “I really think the students of the TD High School Jazz Intensive are top line and have an incredible attitude towards learning. What makes the Jazz Intensive special to me is that these young people are very passionate about music and are open minded to face new musical challenges. The sky is the limit with what they can do!” says Mitchell.

Attending three-hour daily rehearsals, workshops, and nightly concerts shaped a very busy, but extremely rewarding, residency for the students. Nicole Mitchell explains, “Most jazz education programs throughout the world tend to limit the student’s exposure to only bebop and swing. Unique to those other programs, the Jazz Intensive has offered students an opportunity to experience the broad diversity of the jazz legacy: bebop, swing, ragtime, avant-garde, latin rhythms, creative music and much more! That is so important to me. This exposure will prepare these musicians, because when they go out into the professional world, they’ll be truly able to go in whatever stylistic direction of jazz that they like.” On Sunday, July 4th, the band celebrated the entire legacy of jazz music including pieces by Count Basie, Maria Schneider, Duke Ellington, Toshiko Akiyoshi, Anthony Braxton, and a chart by student composition contest winner Jonathan Tobin, in Festival Hall at the Roundhouse Community Centre.
