A Christmas letter from our Pastor:

Beloved Parishioners,

In a short time Christmas will be here! Christmas is often an exciting and fulfilling time for us with opportunities to visit with family and friends and also to celebrate the greatest gift of all: the birth of God’s only son, Jesus. We also recognize that the holiday season can bring feelings of loneliness, too. We miss those who have gone ahead of us to eternal life. We miss those who will not be home for Christmas. We pray for our parishioners who are sick and homebound.

In a special way, St. Joseph looks forward to greeting our parishioner-family members who will be Home for Christmas. Statistics tell us that a large majority of those who do not attend Church regularly would return if they were asked. Sometimes they simply need to know they are missed and have a graceful opportunity to return. When we hear the phrase, “Come Home for Christmas,” we often think of a loved one far from home. But loved ones can be separated by something much more than physical distance – they can be separated by the pain of a hurt rela-tionship. Christmas is a season of joy, a time when we celebrate the birth of the Prince of Peace. This Christmas, give the gifts Jesus brought to our world: forgiveness and reconciliation. Many are estranged not only from family members, but also from the Lord and from the Church. Christmas is a wonderful, grace-filled time for a spiritual homecoming. Christ is waiting to say, “I forgive you,” and, “I love you.” Perhaps someone you know feels distanced from Christ and His Church. Perhaps this person feels hurt by someone in Church; or finds Church teaching hard to understand; or feels unwelcome. Tell them how sorry we are and how much we want – indeed Christ wants – them to come home.

As a parish, we prepare to celebrate this Christmas with grateful hearts for your very kind cooperation and generous support during the past year. With your support and prayers, St. Joseph Parish has grown in number and in spirit. Thank you for your commitment and dedication. Thanks for your support and love for your priest. Christmas is also a time of sharing. A year end Christmas gift to your Church family is your chance to go beyond day to day sup-port of your parish that you fund through your weekly envelopes and contributions. If you have not been frequenting our Sunday services, still belong to St. Joseph parish, this is also your opportunity to join us in our commitment to serve the people.

Christmas is a spiritual opportunity to make a return to God of His many blessings. Your generosity is greatly ap-preciated and needed.

Una carta Navideña de nuestro Párroco:

Estimados Parroquianos,

Francis Xavier Francis Xavier was born in 1506 to an aristocratic Basque family near Navarre, Spain. At the age of 19, he went to study at the University of Paris, and by age 24, he was al-ready a teacher of philosophy who had a promising academic career ahead of him. His life changed after he became acquainted with Ignatius Loyola, and along with Ignatius and others, he helped found the religious community, the Society of Jesus. He was or-dained to the priesthood in Venice in 1537. As King John III of Portugal desired Jesuit missionaries for the Portuguese East In-dies, Francis was ordered there in 1540. He landed at Goa, India, the capital of the then Portuguese colonies, on May 6, 1541. Francis had a passion for proclaiming the Gospel and he evangelized to such widely scattered people as Hindus, Malayans and Japanese. His letters reveal him as a tireless and enthusiastic missionary. Wherever he went, he lived with the poorest of the population, sharing their food and

modest accommodations. He also spent countless hours ministering to the sick, particularly those afflicted with leprosy. Francis ministered for more than two years in Japan and learned enough Japanese to preach in a simple style, ad-minister the sacraments, and to establish missions for missionaries who were to follow him. From Japan he had dreams of going to China, but this plan was never realized. He died on December 2, 1552, at age 46, on his way to mainland China. On December 11, 1553, Xavier’s body was shipped to Goa and remains there still in the Basilica of Bom Jésus. He was canonized in 1622, at the same time as Ignatius Loyola St. Francis Xavier has been called the patron of Catholic missions, and has been considered to have converted more people to Christianity than anyone else since St. Paul. Though his apostolate in the Far East lasted barely ten years, his example has inspired an immense amount of missionary activity in the countries of the Asian continent. He is the patron saint of Australia, Borneo, China, East Indies, Goa Japan and New Zealand. His feast day is December 3.

Vocations: Men Seeking Holiness - Fr. Burke Masters and the Diocese of Joliet are sponsoring a retreat enti-tled “Quaerens Sanctitudo”, which means “Men Seek-ing Holiness” from December 27 (5pm) until Decem-ber 29 (noon) at the St. Charles Borromeo Pastoral Center. This is for all young men, married or single, ages 18-35. Several seminarians from the Diocese of Joliet will be helping with the retreat. We will focus on the universal call to holiness, with talks on silence, virtue, authentic masculinity, chastity, discernment, healing and vocations. Cost for the retreat is $20, which includes five meals and lodging for two nights. For more information or to register contact the Vocation Office at [email protected] or 815-834-4004.

EVANGELIZATION THROUGH TV ADS Evangelization has always been the mission of the Catholic Church. The call to evangelize first given to us by Christ requires that we proclaim the word of God using every means of communication. Radio, television, and the internet have become indispensable tools for brining the Gospel message to the modern world. In 2009, the Diocese of Joliet collaborated with the Diocese of Rockford and Archdiocese of Chicago on an evangelization initiative

using television advertisements on 10 networks in 3 languages for 5 ½ weeks. Catholics who had drifted from the practice of the faith were invited to rediscover their roots and to come home. Surveys of parishes from across the three dioceses showed an increase in Mass attendance, greater participation in the Sacrament of Reconciliation, and a renewed sense of Catholic identity among active parishioners and parish staff. This year, new ads will be shown on TV from mid-December to mid-January. Once again, they will provide the opportunity for faith conversations and moments of evangeli-zation in homes, schools, neighborhoods, and places of business. To find out more about this evangelization effort, to preview the new “Home” ad, and to discover how you might participate, please go to the diocesan website: www.CatholicsComeHomeJoliet.org. Above all, please continue to pray that all baptized Catholics will experience an ever deeper commitment to Christ this Advent!

All Parish Offices will be closed from noon on December 23rd and will re

open on Monday, January 3rd, 2011!

St. Joseph Parish Staff would like to wish all of you a Merry Christmas

and a Prosperous New Year!

Time, Talent & Treasure Fostering Stewardship as a way of life This week’s Stewardship of Time & Talent Salute

In gratitude of God’s gifts of time and talent to us, we grate-fully acknowledge and salute:

Claudia Strope, Jessica Elizondo, Delia Alfonzo, Arlene Goss, Laura Merkel & Irma Lopez

Who have donated countless hours of hard work, dedication and devotion to the parish.

Thank you to our 5th-Grade Catechist

Stewardship Thought for the Week Most people do not see the call to holiness as their first pri-ority in life. If anything, the tendency of many is to run in the opposite direction. For those who love and trust God, however, living holy lives, while providing great challenges can bring some of life's greatest rewards. Jesus shows us through stewardship, the way to these rewards.

Bulletin turned in early due to the holidays. Report will be given next week.
