Chapter 1 Baseball

Monday : 7.00 a.m. (seven o’clock) : San Francisco

Jed Masters is driving to work. He is on the Bay Bridge and he’s goingtowards downtown San Francisco. He can see the tall buildings of SanFrancisco. The buildings are shining in themorning sunlight.

Twenty minutes later Jed drives past Mel’s, a famous American diner. Jedoften has breakfast in Mel’s, but he is too busy today.It is Thanksgiving soon and Jed is going to buy a present for his son, Gil.

Sato stands up and picks up a baseball bat. One of the players throwsthe baseball towards Sato. Sato hits the ball, then he drops the bat andruns.

“Where did you learn to play baseball so well?” Jodie asks Sato.“I’m Japanese,” answers Sato. “We’re crazy about baseball in Japan.”“And we’re crazy about Thanksgiving in America,” says Gil. “And it’s Thanksgiving soon. I’m going to cook a Thanksgiving meal and Iwant you all to come. And I’m going to pay for these drinks, too.”“I can pay for my own drink, thanks,” says Sato.Gil smiles. He knows Sato very well. Gil takes an ice-cube from his drink.Then he puts the ice-cube down Sato’s shirt. Everyone laughs. “No, I’m paying,” says Gil and he puts his hand into his jacket pocket. Butthere is nothing in the pocket.“Okay. Very funny. Ha! Ha! Who’s got my wallet? Sato?”“I haven’t got your wallet. I’ve got a wet shirt,” says Sato. Gil looks in theother pocket. It isn’t there. “Okay, the joke’s over,” says Gil. “Someone stolemy wallet in the park.”

Sit down,” says the teacher. The young man doesn’t speak.Then the teacher repeats the words “Don’t worry. Sit down.” But this timehe says them in Russian.The young man understands and he smiles. He likes to hear his own lan-guage. He sits down at a desk.

She kisses him on the foreheadand gently touches his face. She looks sad. “Hello, David,” she says.“Hello, Jodie,” replies David. “Don’t worry, Jodie. It’s all right. I’m fine.”They both smile. Jodie tells her brother about Gil and about the baseball game and aboutThe Hard Rock Cafe.“I want to meet Gil. Chapter 2 Breakfast

Tuesday : 8.30 a.m. (half past eight) : an office : Tokyo, Japan

Koto Kanazawa is a very rich businessman. He owns a large art busi-ness. He is in his office, but he is not working - he is thinking about Sato, hisson. Sato is at college in London. Koto phones his son every day at thistime. In London it is half past eleven on Monday night.Koto picks up the phone and dials Sato’s number in London.“Hello, Sato,” he says when he hears Sato’s voice.“I did something very bad this evening,” says Sato.Koto says nothing. He waits for his son to speak.Sato tells his father about Gil andJodie and about Gil’s wallet.Then he talks about Nic,the Russian boy.“I called Nic a thief,” saysSato.Koto listens carefully but hestill says nothing.Then Sato tells his fatherthat he was angry.Now Koto speaks. “Why?”he asks. “Why were youangry?”

Talk to him.”“I don’t know where he is,” says Sato.“I’m meeting Nic at Luigi’s tomorrow morning. Come at ten o’clock. You can talk to him there.” ThenGil hangs up.Sato feels very sad. He remembers his father’s words, “Dowhat you think is right.”“It’s not always easy,” thinksSato.

Just as the girl says this thethief steals her purse from her bag. The girl feels nothing.“Come on. Let’s go for a coffee. Look, there’s a place called Luigi’s. Let’sgo there.”The two girls walk towards Luigi’s. The thief skates away in the oppositedirection.

He gets money fromhis mother every week.Nic knows that his mother is poor. One day, when he is a doctor, he will earn his ownmoney. Then he will give money to his mother.

Gil and Jodie are on a train. “Why are we going to Oxford?” Gil asks Jodie.“Wait and see,” she replies. When the train stops, they get off and walkpast some very old grey buildings.“These buildings are part of the university,” says Jodie. “Oxford Universityis the oldest university in Britain.”“It’s amazing,” says Gil.“But we didn’t come here to see the buildings,” says Jodie.Gil and Jodie walk on until they get to a large grey building. “Here we are,” she says.

It is a cold dark night in London. A thief is stealing money from peoplenear the British Museum.First, the thief steals a purse from a German tourist. Then, ten minuteslater a young man mysteriously loses his wallet.

The next morning a large brownenvelope arrives at the police sta-tion. The address is written ingreen ink and there is a purse anda wallet inside. There is also anote:

About fifty young people are waiting in Hyde Park. Some of them arewearing running shorts. Others have bikes or scooters. And some peopleare wearing funny clothes.Jodie is with Nic. “What is this ‘Expresso Project’?” asks Jodie.Nic has to think very quickly. He thinks in Russian, but he speaks inEnglish. “Expresso,” he says. “An expresso . . . is a small coffee. It’sblack . . . and strong and . . . you drink it very quickly . . .” Then Nic says something in Russian and skates off.Gil is standing on a box. “Hello everyone and thanks for coming to theFun Run. We have a sponsor all the way from San Francisco. Sunday : 8.00 p.m. (eight o'clock) : A police station

Greg Taylor is a policeman. He has a special job this week. His job is to find the pickpockets in Covent Garden in London.Greg Taylor is in a room full of TV monitors. Greg uses the monitors to see what is happening in Covent Garden.On the screen he can see a busker outside the underground station and a juggler outside a theatre. There is also someone on roller blades. Greg doesn’t know that this isthe thief.

Sunday : 9.30 p.m. (half past nine) : the thief’s bedroom

The thief steals a walletthen goes home. Suddenlythe phone rings. The thief answers thephone. A voice says “Hi! Jodie.It’s Gil.”

Five minutes later, Jodieputs the wallet into abrown envelope. Then she writes theaddress of a police station on the front of theenvelope. Jodie writes in green ink.Jodie puts a little money ina box. The words ‘For David’ areon the side of the box.

Sunday night : Covent Garden

A woman saw the accident. She goes to the phone box and dials 999. Aman answers and she asks for an ambulance. She says it is an emer-gency. She tells him that a young woman crashed into a wall on her ska-tes and that she is unconscious. She is near Covent Garden undergroundstation.

Ten minutes later an ambulance and a police car arrive at CoventGarden.

Two men get out of the ambulance. They look at Jodie and move her intoa special position. Then they put a collar around her head and neck. Theydon’t want Jodie to move her head and neck. One man gets a stretcher from the ambulance. Then both men lift Jodieonto the stretcher. There are lots of people. A policeman is asking themquestions. Above their heads are police cameras. Greg Taylor is watchingeverything on the TV monitor.

He knows that the injured girl is a thief.
