In April this year, SA Express celebrated 20 years in the aviation industry. The atmosphere at the company’s head office in Johannesburg was electrifying and the energy tremendous. The celebration was spread throughout the airline’s stations, ensuring that every SAX employee was included. Members of the SAX family at OR Tambo were excited to share the moment with our CEO, Inati Ntshanga who started the celebration off with a speech about the company’s Vision 20:20. He then had the crowd in stitches when he skipped by a couple of slides saying: “I am hungry and I want to get this done, quick!” and based on their eager facial expressions, it seems that the majority of the employees present felt the same way!

We were honoured to be graced by Naledi Kgapola and Dave Allanby’s presence at our 20 year celebration in aviation. The two are few of the longest serving employees of SAX, and this serves as a reminder to all of us that dedication and passion in the workplace goes a long way – show what you are made of and your efforts will be rewarded.

The Divisional Manager of Communications then took the crowd on a nostalgic journey down memory lane with a presentation of old photos that jogged a lot of memories and led to much laughter and reminiscing.

Then finally, it was time for the DJ to hop on the decks and to really get the party started – which he did, followed by much merriment on the dance floor. What a fitting way to celebrate 20 Years of Flying for You.

In April 1994, South Africans were on the brink of democracy, and the country was just three days away from its first democratic elections. The country was buzzing with anticipation, excitement, and anxiety, and in the midst of all this a brand new airline was about to take off.

On 24th April 1994, SA Express’ very first aircraft took to the skies. The airline had a mission to be the best in Africa, if not the world, and it all started with employees who were

passionate about aviation. In the beginning, they didn’t even have uniforms but that didn’t defer their dreams to take flight in aviation. Although the airline only started with one route (Johannesburg to Kimberley), it soon expanded

to include routes all over the country and even beyond its borders. Over the years SAX has evolved into a household name, both in South Africa and around the world, not least of

all because it has been a pioneer when it comes to setting trends and leading by example. In 1994, the airline hired Romy Dippenaar as its first female pilot, and has hired a record number of female pilots since.

This year we celebrate 20 years of serving the public with pride. We are now over our teens, about to come of age, and are looking forward to many more years to come. We are celebrating our 20 year anniversary at the same time as the country celebrates 20 years of freedom, and what an honour it is to share our milestone with such a momentous one!

is it a bird? is it a plane? no, it’s sax!

From humble beginnings, SA Express now operates 24 high quality, world class affiliated aircraft which we use to fly throughout South and Southern Africa.

From early on in its history SAX entered into a partnership with Bombardier to supply its aircraft. For those who do not know who Bombardier is, it is behind the engineering of our beloved Gautrain and is a world class operation. Bombardier manufactures the CRJ200s (carries 50 seated passengers), the CRJ700s (carries 70 seated passengers) and the Q400s (carries 74 seated passengers) that SAX currently operates. All of which are extremely sophisticated aircraft that have been manufactured with the highest standards of aviation technology.

SAX currently operates a fleet of 15 CRJ200 and CRJ700 regional jets and nine Q400 turboprops. The airline employs approximately 300 full time maintenance technicians to perform both light and heavy maintenance work on these aircraft within a 10,000 m2

maintenance hangar and support infrastructure facilities across their base of operations.SAX only wants what is best for their passengers and never compromises on security or safety. We adhere to ACSA rules, as well as

those of other aviation bodies, which is why we have continued to supply excellent service to our passengers for two decades.

Training

At SAX, we understand the value of successful business which is why we always strive to continuously improve the skills of our employees and interns. SAX’s training programme is an on-going event throughout the year during which we explore new ways of doing things and encourage our employees to take part in training sessions in their respective fields of expertise. This notion was designed to equip our employees with the necessary skills needed in the aviation industry, and to ensure that our employees are the most well trained in the industry.

Investors

It would not have been possible for the airline to have grown as much as it has, without the many partnerships it has made along the way – from brokering new ones to strengthening existing ones. These partners have become our allies and with their help, SAX has developed into a solidified business venture with people to rely on in every relevant field of expertise.
