ILLUSION features intriguing exhibits that deceive the eyes of the visitor, showing that what we perceive is oſten radically different from the reality we observe. JANUARY—Family Science Saturdays. Participate in hands-on activities that allow for minds of all ages to be creative and innovative. Activities free with paid admission. 1–3 PM in the Tinkering Studio. Dates are January 3, 10, 17, 24 & 31.

January 3: Explore Circuits! Learn the di�erence between closed and open circuits to make lights, spinning motors and more.January 10: Wind Energy and Pinwheels Tinkerers explore wind energy and mobility, and design their very own rocket or paper pinwheel. January 17: �e Science of StampsTinkerers design their very own stamp! Create three-dimensional stamps for two-dimensional printing. January 21: Explosive Art WorkUsing vinegar, baking soda and paint, Tinkerers will create supernova-inspired artwork. January 31: Light Painting Tinkerers will use motors, LEDs and ingenuity to create a device that paints with light!

JANUARY 5—Senior Monday Lecture: Phillip Blanco on Return to the Moon: Apollo’s Legacy. Amazingly, it has been 40 years since a human being walked on the Moon. Dr. Philip Blanco will revisit some of the highlights of the Apollo program with newly restored archival footage as well as survey current and future e�orts in lunar exploration. Following the lecture, catch a special screening of the IMAX �lm Hidden Universe. 10:30 AM lecture; noon theater show; seniors $8, adults $17.95.

JANUARY 5—�e Origin of the Universe and the Arrow of Time. Author, educator and theoretical physicist Sean Carroll will talk about the nature of time, the origin of entropy and how what happened before the Big Bang may be responsible for the arrow of time we observe today. �e event is free and open to the public but registration is required. Doors open at 6:30 PM. �e talk begins at 7 PM.

JANUARY 8—Young Scientists Session 4: �e Human Body Preschoolers ages 3–5 (and a parent) explore the scienti�c wonders of the world through experimentation, investigation and scienti�c questioning. Sessions run monthly, four weeks each. �ursday, Saturday or Sunday morning. 9 AM–10:30 AM. Members $75, nonmembers $85.

JANUARY—Tinkerers’ Club. Join us on Saturday mornings to learn new skills and work on fun projects that you get to take home with you. Supplies are limited. Advance registration is

January 10 & 31: Soldering Skills Lab and Wind Energy Tinkerers will learn to solder, power a motor and create a super-fast, spinning turbine to take home!January 17 & 24: Science of SerigraphyIn this special two-class workshop, Tinkerers will explore the science of serigraphy—also known as screen printing—and make their very own eco-friendly screen prints. Workshop admission will be sold in a two-class block for January 17 and 21. Special rates apply.

JANUARY 10—Saturday Science Club for Girls: Forensic Detectives. Collect and analyze �ngerprints, hair samples and use chromatography to solve a mystery. Girls in grades 5–8 can join the Fleet on the second Saturday of each month to investigate exciting science topics. Noon–2 PM; members $12, nonmembers $14. JANUARY 12—Suds & Science: �inking Positively: How the Brain Re�ects Happiness. Join Dr. Lisa T. Eyler, Associate Professor of the Department of Psychiatry at UCSD, as she discusses the components of happiness, what MRI scans of the brain reveal about happy people and why it is important to study people with positive psychological traits like optimism, resilience and empathy. Location: Callahan’s Pub & Brewery, 8111 Mira Mesa Blvd, San Diego, CA 92126. 6:30 to 8 PM.

JANUARY 16—Rock in the Park: Tim Flannery with the Lunatic Fringe. �e Fleet’s second annual live concert series kicks o� with Tim Flannery and the Lunatic Fringe! Concerts will be held in the �eater Lobby. Food available for purchase; beer, wine and cocktails available at the no-host bar; and the Fleet's 100+ hands-on exhibits will be open for exploration. Doors open at 7 PM for all shows. 21+ only; IDs will be checked at the door.
