PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE JACK HERBERT

This is my first welcome letter as the new President of Pius XI Catholic High School.

I would like this to serve as a thank you letter first and foremost. Thank you to the students, faculty, parents, alumni and board for trusting me with this significant opportunity to use my God-given skills and abilities to lead this community into its 90th year and beyond. Thank you to my daughters for

showing me just how important those high school years were in your own personal growth and development. Thank you to my wife, Jane, for being

enthusiastic and supportive of this wonderful adventure.

This is going to be a lot of fun.

One of my favorite mantras is “be better today than you were yesterday, and be better tomorrow than you are today”. From looking at how we deliver curriculum, to living our Catholic values and investing resources in faculty and mission-critical programs, we will strive to improve a little every day. A year from now, we will look back at all we have achieved together and thank the Lord for our collective progress.

Inside this issue of Examen is just a snapshot of the incredible moments and people I now experience every day as well as a listing of donors who gave $250 or more for the year ended June 30, 2018. For all of these kind and wonderful people, both named and unnamed, I thank you. You uplift each and every one of us in this building.

I am blessed beyond measure to be part of this community. Thank you in advance for your patience, your prayers and your support.

Shannon King • Student Life CoordinatorFrom the day she was hired seven years ago, it has been about maximizing the student experience for Shannon King. “I want to be a person who makes it possible for our students to simply have a good day...school should be a fun, engaging, positive experience for them.”

King taught Spanish for six years before recently transitioning to the role of Student Life Coordinator, where she promotes student engagement in the school, providing opportunities for student growth

outside of academics. King coordinates any and all areas related to the student experience, including co-curriculars, providing leadership opportunities through student council, as well as retreat experiences.

She is also a TAC teacher and Kairos retreat coordinator. “I strongly believe that, working in a Catholic school, we need to be present in our students’ lives in a variety of ways....in and out of the classroom,” says King. “My primary goal in this role is to create a well-rounded experience for our students, giving them opportunities to get involved in different aspects of our school beyond academics.”

Christine Trainor • English Teacher

Collaboration. Community. Risk Taking. Positive Energy. Curiosity. Engaging Conversations.

Welcome to Christine Trainor’s classroom.

Currently in her fifth year as a Pius XI English teacher, Trainor continues to reinvent herself as an educator. Want proof? Search “creamcityclassroom” on Instagram, and you will find classroom photos and activity descriptions. For Trainor, it’s a way to virtually bring students and parents into her classroom, as well as share ideas with other educators.

A winner of the Herb Kohl Award for Teaching Excellence in 2016, Trainor is a self-described “work in progress” as a teacher (“but shouldn’t we all be?”, she says). Constantly seeking ways to improve her craft, Trainor takes great pride in a “less is more” approach. “It’s not about how much can we cover in a semester, but how deep can we get into the material,” she says. “It’s important to evolve as a teacher, because my students and their needs are evolving as well.”

Connecting with students sparks her passion for teaching. Trainor says, “I know I’m doing very important work. The end result I strive for is for my students to be genuinely engaged, excited and curious...that they enjoy coming into my classroom.”

MILESTONES AND MEMORIESu 1,002 WINSu 16 CONFERENCE CHAMPIONSHIPSu 8 STATE CHAMPIONSHIPSu 21 STRAIGHT SEASONS (1988-2008) WITH AT LEAST 30 VICTORIES

And yet, for Pius XI Girls Volleyball Coach Dave Scher, the wins are secondary. It’s about the relationships and the memories that last a lifetime. “You can try to have a combination of high expectations and doing everything you can to be successful in terms of wins and losses. But if you don’t build trusting relationships with your

players, it doesn’t mean anything...and it probably won’t be effective,” said Scher.

Having just finished his 31st season coaching volleyball at Pius XI, Scher is the longest tenured volleyball coach in the Milwaukee area. After career win #1,000 in the Woodland conference tournament in October 2018, a large group of former players, led by his assistant coach Jenny Leszczynski ’04, organized a surprise celebration held after the Popes’ regional playoff win. Scher was brought to tears as he was presented his milestone award, as well as hand-written letters from former players covering the past three decades. Leszczynski said, “He’s such a passionate coach, and his lessons stick with you throughout your life. He teaches his players to have high standards, to hold themselves accountable at all times. He truly cares about all of us.”

Scher says there are two distinct characteristics of all the great teams he has coached - mental toughness and team chemistry. He spends a great deal of time training the mental side of the game, particularly how to bounce back after making a mistake. “You don’t mope. You don’t pout. You say to yourself, ‘Set me again. I want the ball’, ”said Scher. And as for team chemistry, Scher can give countless examples of teams he has coached who may not have been as talented as their opponent, but their unity and togetherness carried them to victory.

Currently in his 36th year working at Pius XI (teaching Fitness and Wellness Education), Scher knows he is exactly where he should be. “This is a special place. I remember Father McCall saying, ‘Being here is a calling.’ Pius is home for me. I’ve been here my entire adult life, from college on. This is the only place I’ve ever known. I just feel so blessed, so lucky to have spent my whole career here.”

EXAMEN6

MEET THE NEW PIUS XI PRESIDENT JACK HERBERT

How have your experiences as a business leader helped you in your role as President of Pius XI?

Every organization, including Pius XI, should be evaluated on the quality of its structure, people talent and plan to pursue excellence. Each individual in the organization needs to feel genuinely valued and understand how they contribute to the organization’s success.

With over 30 years of leadership experience, how have you evolved in your leadership style over time?

Studying the different leaders I have worked for helped me craft my own style of servant leadership of putting others ahead of your own agenda. It is important to be passionate in everything you do, and make sure that passion is known and felt throughout the organization. I have also learned the importance of being approachable, and fostering a culture of collaboration among all members of the organization.

“When you match my personal interest in education with a wonderful mission statement of serving a wide array of young people in a Catholic environment - it’s a perfect match. I’m privileged to be here.”

For Jack Herbert, it was the perfect opportunity at exactly the right time. Previously a senior executive at Time Warner Cable, as well as a successful entrepreneur, Herbert was ready for a new challenge - an opportunity to give back to a place that did so much for his children (Brynn ’11 and Madeline ’13). Following his tenure as board director and interim President, Herbert was named the third President of Pius XI Catholic High School on September 26, 2018.

Speaking of your passion, where does this come from? What motivates you on a daily basis?

I truly believe that God gives each of us gifts and talents, and it is our job to maximize these. The opportunity to work with a team of dedicated professionals to relentlessly pursue improvement excites me. How can you not be passionate about the mission of Pius XI? When you have the opportunity to be a part of this team, helping to move our school forward together, it’s invigorating. There is such a special, unique vibe in this building, and I am glad to be a part of it.

Describe the impact that Pius had on your two daughters, Brynn ’11 and Madeline ’13.

They both had great experiences here. They received an outstanding education. The TAC program was terrific for both of them. Our teachers care so much, not just for the four years a student is at Pius XI, but well beyond. The communication that both of my daughters still have, to this day, with their Pius XI teachers, just astounds me.

Our girls were exposed to the many wonderful aspects of the Pius XI culture, including the diverse student body. My wife Jane and I believe strongly in the importance of diversity for a young person as they are forming their beliefs and values about life and learning how to interact with others, particularly individuals different than themselves.

7www.piusxi.org

What do you remember about the first time you visited Pius XI?

I remember walking through the doorway in 2008 and being immediately welcomed with open arms by Melinda Skrade. You could just feel the energy the moment you entered the building. Then you walk the halls...and when you walk the halls, the truth comes out. The doors opened, and students spilled into the hallways as they were moving on to the next class....and you had students actually look you in the eye and say “hello”, and “welcome to Pius”. They weren’t coached or counseled to do this....it was just spontaneous.

What do you believe are our biggest strengths at Pius XI?

First and foremost, our long-standing tradition of providing an outstanding Catholic education. We follow those Catholic principles in a deliberate but really cool way around here. Second, our teachers are outstanding. With an average tenure approaching eighteen years, many of our teachers have dedicated their lives to this school, and to making a difference in the lives of our students. Finally, with the social climate being what it is today - how we welcome a mosaic of different students into our community and strive to support each individual student in their journey to become the very best version of themselves that they possibly can.

What is our biggest challenge as a school?

The daily challenge of improvement - how do we continue to get better every day? How do we become truly outstanding? How do we become the very best school that we can be? A great challenge, but also a tremendous opportunity.

Describe the role that faith plays in your life.

I try to live each and every day by the golden rule. There’s something comforting about knowing that the Lord is always watching you, and making sure that you’re taken care of. When you’re able to reflect and pray and get that sense you’re making a connection to the Lord and that it’s going to be okay, it’s an amazing feeling. The Spirit overwhelms you. It goes back to what we do here at Pius XI, and how we practice our Catholic values. Not all of our students are Catholic, and yet we teach and instill in them what Catholic values mean. At the end of the day, it’s about loving your neighbor.

AMBITIOUS ARTISTS

Visual Arts students at Pius XI find their voice through creative problem solving within a collaborative environment among students and teachers. This past summer, four ambitious senior AP Portfolio students enrolled in pre-college art courses across the country, challenging themselves through the rigorous curriculum, and in the process opening up valuable scholarship opportunities.

Bella Charles went to the Milwaukee Institute of Art & Design, enrolling in an Advanced Photography course. Bella found that she loved building narratives in her work using models in specific environments. The community at MIAD was like no other for Bella, who said, “It was a community where I could fully express myself.”

Meanwhile, on the other side of Lake Michigan, Johanna Kuhn enrolled at the University of Michigan. Due to Pius XI’s strong reputation with past art students, Johanna was admitted tuition free. And she took full advantage of the opportunity, registering for the Bachelor of Fine Arts Preview course. Johanna got to experiment with a variety of studio classes and receive feedback from others outside of her normal setting.

Minda Silvestre and Ashley Collier spent their summer at the prestigious Maryland Institute College of Art. Ashley dove into an illustration program, where she was introduced to book making. Minda enjoyed a figure painting class where she took on the challenge of oil painting. “MICA helped me learn to integrate abstract work with realism,” Minda said. Both students gained valuable experience using new techniques that they will be integrating into their work in AP Portfolio.

These four students are the latest in a long line of Pius XI art students who have enrolled in these pre-college courses. Art Department Chair Cathy Burnett applauds the ambition of these students, saying, “It reflects a level of engagement in their work, and a passion for pursuing their voice. We always encourage students to look for additional feedback beyond ours. These programs set our students up for success long after their time at Pius XI.”

AND THE EMMY AWARD GOES TO...

What do you love most about your job?

JM: The limitless options and the problem solving, and being able to travel all around the world, working with some of the most talented people in film...because at one time or another, almost everyone will work in commercials at one point of their career. I also really enjoy conquering challenges, getting through the stressful/difficult parts of a project, seeing it all come together in the end.

JJ: It has never for one day felt like a job. My father used to tell me to “find what you would do for free and then figure out how to get paid doing it.” That’s the best advice I’ve ever received about work, and the first thing I’d pass along. The hardest part of acting is sticking with it. Rejection far outweighs success, but if you weather the storm, getting to work is the most rewarding job I’ve ever known.

Jon Messner ’88 and Joel Johnstone ’97 reached the pinnacle of the television industry, taking home

Emmy awards for their outstanding work. Messner, a freelance line producer and owner of Messner

Productions, won his Emmy for “Outstanding Promotional Announcement” for Discovery Channel’s Shark

Week ad. Johnstone, an actor and producer, won in the category of “Best Comedy Series” for his role as

Archie Cleary in The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel.

Describe your emotions when you found out you won an Emmy.

JM: My initial emotion was euphoria. This was followed by sincere gratitude and ultimately by satisfaction. To win an Emmy is definitely validation for working hard - the endless hours, taking chances and continuing to push forward regardless of any situation. It’s very rewarding to know that it was not just blind faith that got me to this point. The real dream come true in this whole thing, though, was having my mom there with me to receive the award.

JJ: As celebratory and surreal as that moment felt, it feels even better to be working on the set of a show like Maisel. Getting to play alongside the legendary talents on that show, and say words written by Amy Sherman-Palladino and Dan Palladino, surrounded by a crew that hustles like nothing I’ve ever seen…it doesn’t get better than that. Also, I think we are living through a sort of golden age of television right now. When I was in high school, I think there were a few dozen primetime TV shows. Last I heard, there are currently over four hundred scripted series across all networks, cable and streaming platforms. To get any recognition feels like a minor miracle. So, to get the response that we have for Maisel feels overwhelming in the best of ways.

“To win an Emmy is definitely

validation for working hard -

the endless hours, taking chances

and continuing to push forward

regardless of any situation.”JON MESSNER ‘88

11www.piusxi.org

What do you still want to achieve?

JM: First and foremost, to raise my kids to be good, worldly people. Professionally, I would like to make more feature films, and win an Oscar someday. I am currently reading some scripts and considering something in the next calendar year.

JJ: As an actor, so much. I hope in twenty years I can write another of these and tell you I’ve been a part of dozens of TV series and films that found large audiences and will stand the test of time. I want the work to always be challenging AND fun. I also truly hope to reach a point where I am offered jobs instead of having to audition for them. A pipe dream of mine is to live in Rome one day, but only if I don’t have to audition daily.

As a father (and a baseball fan), I want to tour each stadium in the country with my son…something my father and I started a long time ago.

What are some of your favorite Pius XI memories?

JM: Friends, sports, the whole experience was a lot of fun. It is interesting as the majority of people I now work with are true “artists” and were people who I probably never really would have hung out with when I was younger, or ran in the same circles. My wrestling coach, Bill Phillipson, was a huge influence on me. We still talk regularly, and I always call or try to have dinner or see him in person whenever I come home. Milwaukee is still and always will be home.

JJ: This sounds corny, but the people I met there had a much greater impact than any individual experience. A few of the friends I made at Pius are among the closest people in my life to this day. That’s a rare thing, and I’ll always be grateful to Pius for making those introductions. I wouldn’t be an actor if I had never met (Pius XI Theater teacher) Kevin Schwartz. He was the first person to tell me I could do this, and the first person who got me to take it seriously. That’s a debt I don’t think I’ll ever be able to repay, but I am eternally grateful to him. He is an inspiring teacher, guide and someone I am happy to call a friend.

Gifts of time or goods are not reflected, but always appreciated.

Our fiscal year ending June 30, 2018 was marked by positive improvements in debt reduction, capital improvements and an increase in our endowment thanks to contributions to the Jerry M. Cohen Faith Servant Fund, the newly established Skrade Scholars Program and another successful Hank Raymonds Holiday Classic. We were proud to renovate the new Norb Riegert College Counseling Center, dedicated to Frances C. Doherty.

Each year, the need for tuition support increases and we were able to meet the needs of our families by awarding nearly $2.1 million in financial aid and scholarships. Investments in safety, technology and academic programming remain a priority.

As we approach our 90th year, we remain ever grateful for those who continue to invest in future leaders.

PLAY HARD, HAVE FUNJoin us for the 7th annual Hank Raymonds Classic at Pius XI! On Saturday, January 5, twelve of the premier high school basketball programs in the area will compete on Hank Raymonds Court in a new shootout format.

For more event information, visit www.piusxiathletics.org

Mike Yehle graduated from Pius XI in 1963. His education at Pius XI, coupled with a work ethic from his loving parents, set him on the road to success as a business owner and freelancer. He married Sandy in 1968 and together, they built a wonderful and fruitful life, each pursuing fulfilling careers. For decades, Mike and Sandy have been donating time, talent and treasure to Pius XI. A deep love for this school and a desire to ensure that future students had the opportunity to enjoy a Pius XI Catholic education led them to establish a new endowed fund. The Mike and Sandra Yehle Endowed Scholarship will grow with regular contributions through his IRA and remain invested and managed by Northern Trust. Through these contributions and a provision in his will

to contribute to this fund upon his death, a future Pope will receive a 4-year half-tuition scholarship. Because of his thoughtful planning, this fund will exist in perpetuity and will continue to serve the school for as long as Mike and Sandy did. “The driving force behind us was our education, teachers and knowing Fr. Bob Carney, the finest man to ever walk the halls of Pius XI High School. Pius taught me the values of work and art. Both gave me a wonderful and rewarding career. Now is the time to give back to Pius XI. It was the start, and will be the finish to a great life,” says Mike. We are truly blessed by such thoughtful generosity.
