I t is hard to believe that the holiday season is approaching. It seems like only yesterday, we were enjoying 80 degree weather and dressing in summer attire.

But now the hustles and bustles are upon us. But before we get into the holiday rush, let us keep in mind that November is a very special month. It is a time to give thanks, a time of remembrance, a time to count our bless-ings, and a time of prayers. May the holiday season instill in each of us caring and sharing thoughts and deeds for today and every day.

I personally want to thank the Cash Bash ticket committee, ticket sellers, kitchen personnel, bartenders, and ALL volunteers in and behind the scenes who assisted with this event. What a fantastic team effort! This event was very successful and we had a lot of fun. Shall we do it again??

Sunday football and the D-Team are back in the swing of things. A special thank you to the D-Team for SUPER FOOD SUNDAY’s. And thank you Steeler fans, for those extra special treats and goodies. Support those STEELERS-they need it!!

D onna and I want to thank the Officers and members of your Lodge for the hospitality extended to us in our recent

visit there. It was great to see some old friends and make some new ones.

The dinners Saturday and Sunday were excellent. The members did a fantastic job in preparing

them. It is wonderful to see a Lodge with so much enthusiasm and members working so well together. It was our pleasure to be there this past weekend. It felt like home.

• We have expanded the Student of the Month pro-gram to include the Connellsville Area Career and Techni-cal Center (formerly the Vo-Tech). The first recipients from CACTC are Tyler Basinger for September and Ashley Moyer for October.

• Geibel High School: Emily Solan (Sept) and James Ross (Oct)

• CAHS: Paige Vanek (Sept) and Erica Bartholow (Oct)

• Soccer Shoot: We are pleased to report that six of our eight local Soccer Shoot winners have won the South-west District competition and will compete at the State contest in State College on November 8th. They are Kylie Witt, Bailey Cartwright, Jeff Kreinbrook, Aria Kreinbrook, Colby Fiesta and Angela Bloom.

• Americanism Essay Contest: The theme this year is “What Freedom Means to Me.” The contest is open to any 5th through 8th grade student. Students should ask their teachers for details. All essays must be completed by Janu-ary 10, 2009.

• Drug Awareness Poster Contest: The theme this year is “Living My Life Drug Free.” The contest is open to all 4th, 5th and 6th graders. Students should encourage their teachers to participate. Deadline is January 31, 2009.

• Most Valuable Student Scholarship applications are available at every high school, online at www.elks.org/enf/scholars/mvs.cfm and from the Lodge secretaries. Any high school senior is eligible and deadline to the Lodge is January 9, 2009.

• Elks Legacy Scholarship applications are available from Lodge secretaries and online at www.elks.org/enf/scholars/legacy.cfm. These scholarships are for high school seniors who are also children or grandchildren of a Lodge member. Applications must be mailed to Grand Lodge by January 9, 2009.

• Emergency Educational Grants are available to children of deceased or totally disabled Elk members. Call the Lodge secretary for information.

• The local Hoop Shoot is tentatively scheduled for Saturday, January 10, 2009 at Junior High East. Any child between the ages of 8 and 13 is eligible to compete.

ELKS NATIONAL FOUNDATION

Two members of our Lodge were re-cently honored by the Grand Lodge and the Elks National Foundation. Ernie Ruggieri became only the 3rd member of our Lodge to be recognized as a Permanent Benefactor in the Foundation by surpassing $2000.00 in donations. He received a certificate and pin and became a member of the ENF Hall of Fame. The other two Permanent Benefac-tors in our Lodge are Bill Thornley and Tom Trimpey PER.

Kaz Zabela was recognized as an Honor-ary Founder in the Foundation with $1000.00 in total donations. He also re-ceived a certificate and pin and became a member of the ENF Hall of Fame. Our Lodge has eight other Honorary Founders: John Fiesta, Dan Gimmel, Donna Hawkins, Ron Hawkins PSP, Jim Hines PER, Edgar Luckey, Lew Lynn and John Truxel.

ENF Chairman Jim Hines PER was once again honored with a Grand Exalted Ruler pin for exceeding the GER’s per capita of $4.50. Jim has more than doubled that per capita so far this year and is aiming for at least $10.00 per capita. Jim also received a Mercy pin for personal donations of $500.00 in a one year period.

We would also like to thank the nine members of our last initiation class who do-nated to the Foundation: Garnet Clark, Linda Galiardi, Christopher Hamborsky, Tammy Hart, Donna Henderson, Michael Ivan, John Kauer, Hiawatha Pillar, and Paula Thomas. Jim Hines has matched the dona-tions and is actively pursuing the other five members.

News & Notes • The Entertainment Committee meetings have been

changed to the 2nd Tuesday of each month. Committee members are needed and interested persons should at-tend the meeting of November 11th.

• The House Committee meetings have been changed to the 3rd Monday of each month.

• Past State President Ron and Donna Hawkins and Secre-tary David Pular represented our Lodge at the Fall Con-vention in Gettysburg. Lodge Secretary David Pular was endorsed by the State Advisory Committee to become State Secretary in May, 2009.

• Thank you to the eight members of our last initiation class who donated to the Home Service program: Garnet Clark, Linda Galiardi, Tammy Hart, Donna Henderson, Michael Ivan, John Kauer, Hiawatha Pillar, and Paula Tho-mas.

• Volunteers are needed for Wing Nite and Steak Fry crews. Anyone interested should contact ER Dr Suz at [email protected] or 724-437-5497.

• STEELER TAILGATES: Sunday, November 9th @ 3:00 PM; Sunday, November 16th @ 3:00 PM and Sunday, No-vember 30th @ 3:00 PM.

• Our Famous Lunch Fish Buffet is back every Friday from 11:00 AM to 1:30 PM. Cost is only $7.95.

• The next Southwest District meeting will be held at Uniontown Lodge on Sunday, November 16th at 2:30 PM.

• The Lodge will be closed on Thanksgiving Day, Thurs-day, November 27th.

• Mark your calendars: Elks Memorial Service, Sunday, December 7th at 1:00 PM; Adult Christmas Party, Sat-urday, December 20th; Children’s Christmas Party, Sunday December 21st.

• Come in and check out our new Internet Jukebox. If you can’t find your favorite songs we can get them for you.

• Our Lodge now has free Wireless Internet Access for our members and guests.

• We still have over 50 delinquent members. A list of delinquent members is posted at the bar and they have been removed from the bulletin list.

• Members and friends who have digital photos of Elk events are asked to download them to a thumb drive or email to us at [email protected] so that we can use them for the online bulletin or the TV displays in the bar.
