use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?

FILM TRAILER: PART 1 • Our British Crime film trailer, ‘Unpainted Path’, follows in its

postmodernism footsteps challenging conventions found in traditional film trailers.

• We have challenged these conventions in our trailer, through our use of non-linear structure of our trailer (we had planned to use this again if we were to construct a full feature film), the use of pastiche (this was used in both our narrative and our editing techniques) and finally our use of hyper-reality and high art styles.

• We were highly influenced by the work of director Quentin Tarantino, especially by his 4th film ‘Kill Bill’, we found his use of editing techniques and pastiche interesting and decided to use these techniques in our trailer.

• Our trailer challenged the traditional conventions of characters and mashed the roles of protagonist and antagonist into two characters, each drawing aspects from both character roles to create two complex anti-hero’s.

• We used many promotional techniques to market our film trailer, we tried to use more viral marketing, for example we created a Twitter, Facebook and Instagram accounts, on which we regularly posted updates on the production of our film poster and magazine cover.

• Having both characters being anti-heroes of opposite sex makes it attract to both sexes

FILM TRAILER: PART 2• Our film trailer was created to be shown in cinemas and online to

promote our film and highlight the narrative and release date.• The genre of our film is crime, but we subtly blurred the lines

between crime and thriller through our use of music and camera shots. The use of a hybrid genre (thriller and crime) is conventional for postmodern texts. The crime genre was established to the audience again through our music choices, but mainly through our use of narrative and props (we used the classic heist narrative and used props like guns and cars.

• Our main influences, which influenced our genre choices, were Quentin Tarantino’s Kill Bill and Mr. & Mrs. Smith, we like their narratives of revenge and action/crime styles. Our narrative and misè-en-scene were influenced again by Kill Bill and Mr. & Mrs. Smith and by the genre of crime we chose.

• With the certification of our film we chose a conventional 15 rating, we felt this allowed us to show a small amount of violence whilst staying within the conventions of a crime film.

• We chose Miramax as our production company, due to its previously released films genre and their success with postmodern films such as ‘Kill Bill’.

• We used conventional marketing techniques but staggered their release unconventionally starting with the poster, then the trailer and then the magazine.

FILM TRAILER: PART 3

• The Camera-Work and Editing techniques we used were specially chosen to peek the interests of the audience and to intrigue them (for example close ups and half body shots), the editing techniques we used to create these effects were repetitions of the same shots and non-linear shot orders.

• The Sound and Titles that we used were in our trailer we used to entice our audience and to complement the genre

• The Misè-en-scene we used was chosen to again match and follow the genre of crime, but also to help distinguish characters and their roles and emotions through-out the trailer.

• The lighting we chose was key to create the right atmosphere in our trailer, but whenever the lighting was not appropriate we adjusted the gradient and grey-scales.

• All of the above are conventional of a postmodern film and are used by other postmodern directors such as; Quentin Tarantino and Guy Riche

MAGAZINE + POSTER: PART 1• The purpose of our magazine cover and

film poster was to increase awareness of our film and increase interest.

• We created a simple yet bold set of magazine covers and posters, we used simple colours and techniques to attract attention to our two main characters (this was a concept I wanted to use and one present in my research), Quentin Tarantino uses these simple techniques in his magazine covers and posters to create effective hyper-real products.

• These techniques are un-conventional of crime genre’s, they normally opt for more high art styled posters with splashy colours and large photos, but we decided to challenge these conventions to create simpler more post-modern products.

• However there are some crime elements such as the iconography like; the guns and the gritty setting
