Indie Rock Conventions

Before creating our music video me and Liam looked at different indie rock music videos which already exist. I reoccurring theme in all these videos were that the band were seen performing in them, most of them had close ups of the vocalist and he was shown more than the rest of the band. Our music video most definitely applies that theme which we have picked up from the genre. We use lots of tight shots of Chris singing more so than the other bands performing. Instruments are also shown in the videos.

GOODWINThroughout the year we have been learning about Goodwin’s theory on music video. Like most music videos do today, my music video also applies Goodwin’s conventions which are:

• A relationship between lyrics and the visuals• A relationship between music and the visuals• Genre-related style and iconography• Multiple close-ups of the main artist or vocalist• Voyeurism• Intertextual references

Although I intended to focus on all of Goodwin’s conventions strongly, I feel like my music video focuses more towards• A relationship between music and the visuals• Genre-related style• Multiple close-ups of main artist• Voyeuristic

A relationship between lyrics and visuals

Me and Liam originally intended to use a lot of lyric and visuals in our music video but unfortunately we did not end up using the props we intended to. We originally wanted Brian to put on a t-shirt and tie with the lyrics of them 2 items, however due to it being awkward to film and the awkwardness of having to get the tie exactly right each time we filmed we left it out.

Our original plans of lyrics and visuals

A relationship between music and the visuals

Me and Liam used music and the visual very well in our music video. As the music video contains a lot of instrumental we was able to link the instrument playing with a visual of someone playing it. It gave the music video a more realistic idea of it being a studio band performing as well as allowing us to apply Goodwin. Our narrative also being a chase also bit Goodwin’s conventions of music and visual. The chase was very upbeat and face pace which fit well with the song’s beat. The cuts were all short which fit well with the speed of the song as well.

Genre-related style and iconography

Our genre was indie-rock and I feel like me and Liam hit the conventions well and that without the music being playing the music video shows the audience what genre this is representing. Liam used a program called ‘Looks’ on his mac which allowed us to tweak the colourgradient. I feel like the colouring of the music video helped with presenting the genre. Another music video that we looked at before making our music videos was The Verve, they also use colour gradient to present the genre. Another genre related style we used was to present the whole band and their image in the video.

Voyeuristic

I feel like the part of the narrative which reveals the night before is voyeuristic and is a very intrusive part for the audience to see. The audience judge the girl as not very respected to the narrative and sees her more as a sex object which creates a disruption in the narrative.

Overall, I feel like Goodwin theory was applied successfully for my music video. A reason why I feel like I was able to apply the theory well was because of the tasks set at the beginning of the year when we was asked to analyse music videos and to be able to see specific parts of the theory when watching videos. I feel like the theory was applied well along with the idea of the indie rock conventions which we originally wanted to use.
