Purposes
• What are you going to use stuff for?• Important to match against permissions
• What type of stuff are you seeking?• Illustrative, factual, teaching point, exemplary
• Your context is your issue• Generalise out to develop your search criteria• Searching on curriculum terms is problematic• The rest of the world labels simply
• How will you employ the images• The method is part of your teaching

Finding: Where
• Google• Ok but issues include specifity; resolution and rights• Dark Data

Finding: Where
• Google• Ok but issues include specifity; resolution and rights• Dark Data
• Aggregators like Europeana, Scran• Usually themed - Europeana - culture; Scran - Scottish• How cultural or Scottish is a picture of an Elephant?
• Curriculum Services• Usually a more limited set• Cross referred to the curriculum; Often in packs• 80/20 rule re aggregation• Can you disaggregate?
• Image Services• Flickr, Getty, Alamy• Rights, Royalty free does not mean free
GT -13 April 2023
Finding: How
• Don't include the words pictures or images in your search.
• Watch your Spelling: Mary Queen of Scots
• Go Outside your domain: When Gran was a Girl
• Singular, Plural: eg. tuba gets more results than tubas.
• Spelling: eg. World War II instead of World War Two, or medieval / mediaeval.
• Wildcarding: Use an asterisk, eg. Egypt* finds Egypt, Egyptians, etc.
• Inverted commas to find an exact phrase, eg. "World War I".
GT -13 April 2023
Finding: How• Alternatives:
• You are interested in caving. A search for speleology finds no results, but a search for potholing finds 3 records. Think of alternative terms.
• You need pictures of Laurel and Hardy. Searching for Laurel finds 301 records, mostly featuring laurel wreaths; searching for Stan Laurel finds 14 records featuring Stan Laurel. Be more specific if necessary.
• You're looking for a famous painting. Searching for painting of Christ looking down from the cross by Dali gives no results, but searching for Dali brings back 19 results, including the painting you wanted. Choose a keyword instead of a description.
• You want to find a pictures of tricycles. Searching for tricycles produces 28 results, mainly of pictures of more than one trike; searching for tricycle produces 64 more pictures. Use singular and/or plural keywords.
GT -13 April 2023
Finding: How
• Searches don’t recognise and, to etc• Keep to nouns• Don’t be too clever: Woman Bed• Viking Clothes rather than Vikings
• Use Boolean: AND, OR, NOT
QuickTime™ and aTIFF (Uncompressed) decompressor
are needed to see this picture.

Decent Sites
• User doesn’t understand separate searches– Relate to user requirements– Mix the fielded and full text retrieval systems– Interpret and front load
• User wants to have learning and teaching wrapper– To meet an established need– To browse for own interest level
• Need for Instant “Fix” to package– Edit this now irregardless of media type– Make it this shape for me– Let me have it locally– Let me do it now– Remember 80% Rule

Summary
• Finding Stuff is no longer enough• Doing Things with Stuff Counts• Do plan what you want
• In terms of content• In terms of what you expect to do with your stuff
• Do search with appropriate terms• Do pay attention to terms
• Is it theirs; how does it become yours• Know the limits; don’t imply rights
• Do try to formulate contacts sensibly• Automated systems means they are for you to use• Such services get 100s of emails asking for someone to do the
research • Don’t ask if you need an aerial for the internet.
