What is

• Nuclear Physics European Collaboration Committee– founded 1986 by subscribing national research councils,

who nominate nuclear scientists as representatives for 3-6 years

• Objective of NuPECC:– “To strengthen European collaboration in nuclear science

through the promotion of nuclear physics and its trans-disciplinary use and application in collaborative ventures between research groups within Europe and particularly those from countries linked to the ESF”

Guenther Rosner CLAS12 Workshop, Genova, 26/2/09 4

Page 5: European Perspective

• ESF– Founded in 1974– 80 member

organisations (science ministries, research councils, academies of science, etc.) from

– 30 countries

• NuPECC– Founded in 1986– 28 members from

20 countries– 3 meetings a year in

different NuPECC countries

– Description of Work: WP23, Task 2: CLAS12 Central Detector• Central Tracker• Central Time-of-Flight scintillators• Central Calorimeter

• European CLAS12 Central Detector groups:– CNRS/IN2P3 IPNO Orsay, LPSC Grenoble, LPC Clermont Ferrand– CEA-IRFU Saclay– INFN-LNF Frascati, INFN-GE Genova– Univ. of Glasgow

• EU support instrumental for– funding through national research councils

• CNRS & CEA in France• INFN in Italy• STFC in the UK

– and the establishment of a European CLAS12 Central Detector Consortium

• However: Lion’s share of funding needs to come from national funding agencies!
