ENGINEERS FOR A SUSTAINABLE WORLD | 2013 GREAT LAKES REGIONAL CONFERENCE

Dear Friends of the University of Pittsburgh,

Members of Engineers for a Sustainable World (ESW) share one common mission: to forge innovative, lasting solutions to the local and global environmental, economic and social challenges of the 21st century. With a network of more than 30 university and professional chapters, ESW works on technical design projects in sustainability on campuses, in local communities, and internationally. ESW-National connects chapters to share information and provides education and training in sustainability topics and design skills.

This fall, our ESW chapter at the University of Pittsburgh will be hosting a regional conference from November 1st through 3rd. This event will bring together students and professionals from Pennsylvania, Ohio, New York, and West Virginia to share best practices for small-scale projects, learn about new ideas and skills, and identify new opportunities to improve the sustainability of our region.

We would love to see your employees in attendance at the conference, and your company can help to make the event possible through our sponsorship program. Your support of the ESW Great Lakes Regional Conference will help to keep the cost low and allow more students from more schools to attend, as well as enabling excellent content for attendees. Sponsors are key to the event’s success, and will receive recognition throughout the event. Sponsors will also be able to participate in a networking session with sustainability-minded students from top universities throughout the region.

We invite you to look through this brochure and read about the projects Pitt’s ESW chapter have completed as well as the various sponsorship levels available to your company. In advance I would like to thank you for your support.

Sincerely,

Matthew WeschlerConference Chair ESW 2013 Great Lakes Regional ConferenceSwanson School of Engineering University of Pittsburgh

Engineers for a Sustainable World at the University of Pittsburgh is pleased to host the 2013 ESW Great Lakes Regional conference! With Pittsburgh’s industrial past, rustbelt infrastructure, and drive for a green future, this is a great city to host an engaging discussion on urban sustainability. We’re eager to share and learn from students and professionals throughout the region – and we hope you’ll be excited to visit us.

Why the Rustbelt?Since the collapse of the steel industry in the 1970’s, cities across the rustbelt have attempted to transition from their heavy industry roots into service sector based economies. Once known as the center of steel production in the United States, Pittsburgh now supports thousands of jobs in finance, education and healthcare, and is regarded as an example of successful industrial transition within the rustbelt. While once renowned for its industrial pollution, Pittsburgh now boasts a skyline populated with 83 LEED certified buildings. The city’s sustainable transition is the primary reason why it was chosen as the location of the G20 World Economic Summit in 2009.

Other rustbelt cities, such as Cleveland, Rochester and Columbus, share Pittsburgh’s transitional history. Like Pittsburgh, however, they also face continued challenges to sustainable urban development. Combined sewer overflows continue to pollute urban waterways, blighted communities require revitalization, and transportation systems are in need of an upgrade.

Engineers for a Sustainable World is an international network of technically-minded people working to improve the sustainability of local communities. With 33 student and professional chapters, ESW uses technical design projects, and educational initiatives to build a national community with the next generation of technical sustainability leaders.

ESW-Pitt was founded in 2005, and has focused on sustainability projects in and around Pittsburgh. Whether an on-campus rain garden, redesigning buildings in old steel towns, or working with local schools to teach students about renewable energy, ESW-Pitt is a core member of the campus sustainability scene, and is excited to share their campus with others in the region!

ESW-Regional Conferences are a way to bring together students and profession-als from Pennsylvania, Ohio, New York, and more to share best practices for small-scale projects, learn about new ideas and skills, and identify new opportunities to improve the sustainability of our region.

ESW at Pitt Welcomes You!

Conference ActivitiesInformal tours of the University of Pittsburgh facilities will be held on Friday afternoon, where students will have the opportunity learn about the Mascaro Center for Sustainable Innovation and the Sustainability and Green Design program at Pitt.

The conference will officially open on Saturday with speakers discussing their visions for a sustainable rustbelt. There will be speakers covering a variety of topics ranging from food and energy to buildings and transportation. All conference participants will be given the opportunity to share their research and the challenges and rewards of project development during a poster fair and project presentation session. The afternoon will include a session focusing on the technical environmental issues affecting our region, followed by a panel discussion exploring the social and economic aspects of sustainable development. Saturday evening will conclude with a networking reception where employers will be given the opportunity to meet talented and passionate students from the region’s top universities.

Sunday will kick-off with an early morning brainstorming session focused on new project ideas and sharing best practices for project development. A morning workshop will then focus on integrating

engineering with urban planning, education and community development. Afterwards, a keynote speaker will present during a catered lunch at the University Club. The conference will conclude with back-to-back workshops focused on project creation and project implementation.

Sponsors Welcome! The Engineers for a Sustainable World 2013 Great Lakes Regional Conference could not be a success without the generous contributions of individuals and businesses. Donations are used to pay for a variety of conference expenses, such as catering, table rentals, printing, and hotel reimbursement for the keynote speaker. In addition, donations help to keep conference registration costs low, so as many students as possible have the opportunity to participate. Sponsorship levels range from the Supporter Level up through the Primary Sponsor Level, and include such benefits as: logo appearance throughout the conference, the opportunity to meet and recruit the next generation of global leaders at the Saturday evening networking reception, and the opportunity to provide promotional material throughout the conference. We invite you to become a partner with ESW as a Regional Conference sponsor and showcase your organization as a leader in sustainability!
