DECEMBER 15, 2019 3RD SUNDAY OF ADVENT

Third Sunday of Advent

Let’s talk about that most taboo subject in Christen-dom: miraculous healing. We avert our eyes when someone announces that he or she has been cured of an ailment that the doctors couldn’t fix. We’re emba-rrassed because, perhaps, we remember our own pre-mature declarations of healing, only to have the afflic-tion return right on schedule. But here is the truth: when John wanted to know if Jesus was the long-awaited Messiah, Jesus didn’t say, Go back and tell John that the armies are vanquished, and our God has roared down from the heavens to slay the unbelievers. When Jesus wanted to console John, locked up in Herod’s prison and facing his own uncertain death, he told his ambassadors to assure him that the surest sign of the kingdom was bursting out all over the Galilee. The blind were seeing, the deaf were hearing, the lame were walking, and the poor were included in all of it. Healing, as portrayed in the gospels and the book that gives us the closest understanding of the lives of the earliest Christians, the Acts of the Apostles, is consi-dered a normal component of Church life. Certainly the rigorous investigation into miracles by the Church assumes that miracles still happen. But, then, why aren’t all healed? Because miraculous healings (this side of heaven, anyway) are really just a side effect of a life lived in Christ. Think of the great miracles of your life. Some of them might be physical healings, but I’ll bet the miracles that most quickly come to mind are the ones that involve human con-nections, the restoration of love, the peace of forgive-ness. So go and tell someone what you’ve seen and heard. How will you be a sign of the kingdom during this bles-sed season?

GOSPEL Who did you come to see? A version of this question is posed by Jesus many times in the Gospels. He asks it of Andrew and John when they begin to follow him. He asks it of Mary Magda-lene in the garden of the resurrection. He asks it in today’s Gospel. “What did you go out to the desert to see?” There is something innately human about “seeing.” Animals have eyes — some with much more powerful vision than our own — but that’s not the kind of seeing Jesus is talking about. We could phrase the question several other ways. “What are you looking for?” “What are you longing for?” “Whom do you seek?” It is in seeing for ourselves that our suspicions or hypotheses are confirmed, that our desires discover their fulfillment, and that we can rest for a moment in certainty. John the Baptist sought certainty of Jesus’ identity. “Are you the one who is to come, or should we look for another?” Jesus sends word to him based on the testimony of sight, ob-servations of the mighty deeds Jesus has begun to work. “Go and tell John what you hear and see.” God recognizes our desire to see. In the Incarnation, the Word is made flesh. The invisible is made visible. The supernatural is made manifest in an infant who can do little more than the most natural of movements as he feeds, cries, sleeps. We don’t need to wait for Christmas to see God. The work of God is all around us. Those blinded by sin “regain their sight.” Peo-ple overcome backgrounds of poverty and violence to make world-changing contributions. Addicts grow and heal. Truth is spoken, and people listen. Let’s pray for the grace to see God’s movement in our lives this week. How have you seen the work of God?

Questions of the Week First Reading The prophet Isaiah spoke of his broken world being restored with God’s divine presence. What does this reveal to us about God? Second Reading James urges his community to be patient and kind in anticipation of the end-times. How well are you practicing these virtues during Advent this year? Gospel Reading Jesus asserts to the crowds: “Among those born of women there has been none greater than John the Baptist; yet the least in the kingdom of heaven is greater than he.” What do you think Jesus is teaching us here?

The Holy Rosary will be prayed at 8:30 Sundays before the 9 am Mass

LIVE THE LITURGY Do you ever feel inwardly dry and parched? Where do you turn to gain a refreshed sense of being and purpose? Just as we often do not refresh our physical bodies with what is healthiest, we make the same mistake with our soul. We do not always reach for the healthiest spiritual food. We confuse our inner dryness with something else and reach out for the wrong thing. It is no wonder why so many people are lost and confused. We will never be completely satisfied or whole this side of our journey. A good measure of patience and waiting is needed as we hope for the rain water of God’s presence to fall upon us. When are we going to finally realize that Jesus is the One who has come to refresh us, and we no longer have to search for another? Our souls will find refresh-ment and rest only when they rest in God.

Dear St. Rose of Lima Community,

Today you notice that we have a change in the four candles. The third candle is what many people call the pink candle, but it is technically a rose candle. We have the rose candle because it is a sign of rejoicing.

Recently, someone asked me why I don’t where the rose vestments, and why aren’t the trimmings on the altar rose. It was a good question especially considering this person comes from a culture that had the custom of doing this on the third Sunday of Advent.

In the liturgy rubrics, it says that the color rose is optional. I suppose the reason it is optional is because so many churches in the early church were so poor they couldn’t afford to buy the kind of materials that were meant to be used for only a day or two throughout the liturgical year.

The reason that rose is such a special color is because it emphasizes the main message of Advent, which is hope, one of the three theological virtues. The third Sunday of Advent is Gaudete Sunday or Rejoice Sunday. We rejoice because we have hope that although we experience pain, suffering, temptations, disappointments, and endless sufferings we will one day dance in the evergreen wreathe of eternity. The Good Lord today is saying to us like he said to Paul, “rejoice in the Lord in all things.” Friends, all things work unto the good for those who love God. On this third Sunday of Advent, I pray we be a people of hope, and that our hope gives birth to rejoicing in all things in the Lord!

Advent blessings,

Fr. Nick

P. Nick
