EN115-1 2008 philosophy:
The purpose of this standard is to define safety requirements for escalators and moving walks in order to safeguard people and objects against risks of accidents during installation, operation, maintenance and inspection work.
Escalator acc. EN 115 definition: continuously moving stairway used for raising and lowering passengers.
It is not recommended to use escalators as regular staircases or emergency exits.
The same safety requirements for all types of escalators (commercial and public use).

EN115-1 2008 clause 3, terms and definitions:
Nominal speed: Speed in direction of the moving step, pallets or beltunder no load conditions
Rated speed: Speed to move the escalator / moving walk under rated load conditions
Rated load: Load at which the equipment is designed to movepassengers (capacity)
Structural load: Load at which the escalator / moving walk supporting
structure is designed
Brake load: Load at which the brake system is designed to stop the escalator / moving walk
Clear definition of electrical safety systems / devices; safety circuits /fail safe circuits

Clear description of the surrounding e.g.:
Where it is possible for peopleto come into contact with the outer edge of a handrail at a landing and can be drawn intoa hazardous situation, such astoppling over a balustrade, appropriate preventative
measures shall be taken.
