    Escalator is a moving staircase

    a conveyor transport device for carrying

    people between floors of a building. The

    device consists of a motor -driven chain

    of individual, linked steps that move up or

    down on tracks, allowing the step treads

    to remain horizontal.

    COMPONENTS OF ESCALATORS

    Landing platform: The two platforms

    house the curved sections of the tracks,

    as well as the gears and motors that drivethe stairs.

    The top platform contains the motor

    assembly and the main drive gear, while

    the bottom holds the step return idler

    sprockets.

    Steps:The steps themselvesare solid, onepiece, cast in aluminumor steel.The stepsare linked by a continuousmetalchain that forms a closed loop.Each step in the escalator has two sets of

    wheels, which roll along two separate tracks.The wheels are connected to the rotating chains,

    and so are pulled by the drive gear at the top of

    the escalator.

    Floor plate:$t provides a place for thepassengers to stand before they step onto the

    moving stairs. This plate is flush with the finished

    floor and is either hinged or removable to allow

    easy access to the machinery below.

    Truss:The truss is a hollow metalstructure that bridges the lower and upper

    landings.$t is composed of two side sections %oined

    together with cross braces across thebottom and %ust below the top.The ends of the truss are attached to the

    top and bottom landing platforms via steel

    or concrete supports.

    Handrail:The handrail provides aconvenient handhold for passengers while

    they are riding the escalator.$n an escalator, the handrail is pulled along

    its track by a chain that is connected to the

    main drive gear by a series of pulleys.

    The step motion is achieved by a direct step assembly connection

    to the step chains.

    Two-step chains$ one for each side of the

    escalator are directly coupled to the ain

    %rive a#le, the bull gear shaft, through the

    step chain sprockets.

    The step chain form a loop for the length

    of the truss, from the step chain sprockets

    at the upper end down to the tension

    carriage gear or turnaround &depending onthe manufacturer' at the lower end or the

    lower reversing station.
