MAP (Measures o f Academ ic Progr ess)

    February 28, 2012

Dear Grade 3 and Grade 4 Parents,

From March 8 to 29, ISM will conduct the Measures of Academic ProgressTM(MAP) tests for Semester 2

    What are MAP tests?

MAP tests are an external assessment from t he Unit ed States, used to assist in det ermining students instruc-t ional level. Currentl y t here are approximately 40 international schools in t he Asia Pacif ic region using MAPtests.

Who does MAP testi ng at ISM?

Students in Grades 3 to 10 take MAP tests. Students receiving Learning Support and ESL support will be giventhe opport unit y, where appropriate, t o part icipate in the MAP test ing. Parents wil l be contacted individuallyregarding any modifications taking place.

What do MAP tests assess and how often do they occur?

These tests will measure academic growth across the school year in the areas of Reading, Language andMathemat ics, and are administered t wice a year at ISM. The Semester 1 tests were taken in September /October of the 2011-12 school year.

How do MAP tests work?Your child wil l t ake the tests on a computer. MAP test s are unique in t hat t hey are adapt ive. The test be-

comes more difficult the more questions the student answers correctly. When a student incorrectly answersa quest ion, the fol lowing test quest ion is adjusted accordingly and is at an easier level. In this way, yourchild wil l t ake a test specif ically created for his or her learning level.

How are MAP tests report ed?

Your child s MAP result s are reported in RIT (Rasch Unit ) scores. This is a diff erent type of score than a typi-cal test that provides a percentage correct. Parents will receive a report that shows their RIT score, the nor-mative RIT scores for t he grade level at ISM, and the normat ive scores for students in the Unit ed States wit h-in the same grade level. These reports will be available in early May.

What does ISM do with the information that MAP provides?

Teachers use the data from MAP test ing to inform learning and teaching. It assists in determining which skill srequire enhancing, which skil ls students have already developed, and which skill s need to be int roduced.

MAP tests also provide our school wit h a reference point for t he ongoing development of the school-widecurriculum. This data allows us to look for trends within certain areas of our curriculum.

How do I prepare my child for MAP testing?

Factors such as sleep and how a child is feeling can all aff ect result s of a standardized test . Your class teach-er will let you know which three days in the coming weeks your child will sit the tests. Please talk to yourchild to help avoid him/ her feeling anxious about MAP test ing.

    Lastly

It is important t o remember that MAP result s provide one piece of assessment data in the process of acquir-ing information and making judgments about student progress toward intended learning. At ISM, we believesound assessment i nvolves creating a mult it ude of ways to measure and communicate student l earning overt ime a photo album versus a single snapshot.

For more informat ion on MAP test ing, please consult the NWEA (North West Evaluat ion Associat ion) websit e at

www.nwea.org. In addition, parents can access the MAP Parent Toolki t athtt p:/ / www.nwea.org/ support /art icle/ 930/ parent -toolkit, or please do not hesit ate t o speak to Mr. Campbell or Mr. Rourke.

    Sincerely,

Adam Campbell Michael RourkeElement ary School Principal Element ary School Assistant Principal

From the PE Departmentrom the PE DepartmentThank you to the many parent s who j oined us on the ES Sport s Day last Friday. Your presence and your wi l l-ingness to either participate or assist was greatly appreciated. Thank you to all the parents who helped outat the many stations. Thank you to our official parent photographers on the day who worked closely with ourIT Coordinator Steve McCallum to make the f inal closing ceremony photo presentations which you can viewon the PE blogs. If parents have photos they would l ike t o share wit h the classes then please contact your

    classroom teacher.

Also thank you to our wonderful PTA who provided extra water bottles and found us 40 coconuts for the

    swimming pool event!

Sports day is a celebration of an act ive l if estyle. A whole day devoted to physical acti vit y as opposed to on-screen act ivit y! Sports Day reminds us that physical act ivi ty provides opportunit ies for social int eract ion, challenge and enjoyment. The importance of sportsmanship wi ll continue in all act ivi t ies we do in physicaleducat ion. Sportsmanship allows us to play competi t ively and st il l enj oy being active whether we win or

lose. Sports Day reminds us as parents just how much fun i t can be to be act ive.

It is recommended that kids get at least 60 minutes of physical act ivit y each day, wit h most of i t being mod-

    erate intensity aerobic physical activity.

The National Associat ion for Sport and Physical Educat ion (NASPE) even offers physical act ivit y recommenda-tions for toddlers and preschoolers. Toddlers should get at least 30 minutes of structured physical activityand at l east 60 minutes of unst ructured physical act ivi ty each day. Preschoolers need a lit t le more exercise-- at least 60 minutes of st ructured physical act ivi ty and at l east 60 minutes of unst ructured physical activi ty

each day. I hope you all f ind t ime each week to be act ive with your child.

Thank you for your ongoing support.
