If youve always had a philan-thropic bent of mind, espe-cially towards the furry kindand were wondering how you

can make a difference, this listcould be a good start.

Adoption counsellingThe primary goal is to find hap-

py homes for the animals. You

can help by interviewing poten-tial owners. By observing howthey handle animals, enquiring

whether family members will ap-prove of the pet and gauging theircapacity to provide long-termcare, you can ensure that thepuppy or kitten is in safe hands.Follow-up phone calls and housevisits are a great help too.

    FeedingYou could syringe-feed the re-

ally tiny kittens and pups andgive Vitamin drops and tonics tothose that need it. Another optionis to supervise the feeding afterchecking with the staff about tim-ings.

And of course, theres alwaysthe option of dropping in over theweekend and feeding the boister-ously cheerful adult dogs biscuitsand bread. Check if theresenough clean water kept in thebowls inside the kennels /cagesor outside.

Special careFor those of you who want to

be completely hands-on, yourhelp in keeping the shelter envi-ronment clean will be greatly ap-preciated. If you spot sick orinjured pups/kittens, you canseparate them and bring them tothe doctors attention or leave amessage with the attendant incharge. You could use disposablegloves (available on request at the

shelter) and rub the animals dryand change soiled paper in thecages.

Socialise cats and dogsAll shelter animals long for hu-

man affection and will be gratefulfor your company, even if its on-ly for a short while. You can walkthe dogs, play with the cats (canbe quite addictive) and check inon the ones that are particularly

    lonely, like abandoned adogs.

    Amritraj, Vidhya Singh and members

of the German consulate in Chennai. The fest kick-started with Bavarianband The Moonlights enthralling thepoolside audience with some nativenumbers. Popular hits like Pretty

Woman saw some guests shake a legalong with the band.

Interestingly, some guests sportedthe well-known dirndl (traditionalpeasant attire) and had some fellowguests conducting eager enquiriesabout the attire.

Apart from the free-flowing beer, thestar of the evening was some authenticGerman cuisine, made with ingre-dients specially flown down for theevening.

Black Box: Morbid but essential, theblack box was invented in the mid-1950s,and not only helps investigators learn whya plane crashed, but how that informationcan be applied to other aircraft to preventa repeat. The Concorde: It never delivered on

its commercial promise, and it was an en-vironmental bad boy, but who can denythat breaking the sound barrier aboard acommercial aircraft is cool. Radar: Sure, the airlines are dying to

replace it with GPS technology, but fordecades its been radar that helps air traf-fic controllers locate and track planes upto 200 miles away. The jumbo jet The hub and spoke system The Very Light Jet (VLJ)

Sample this: You are a married,career-oriented woman jug-gling work and family. Thecompany selects you for a

three-month on-site project to theU.K. You are thrilled about thisdream assignment and leave yourtoddler at the care of a day care cen-tre, with your supportive husbandpromising to take charge of the rest. But before you settle down to thenew environment, there is some

not-great news from home.Like this one incident which leftthe Suris helpless. A notice caution-ing them that the day care centre

was closing down and their two- year-old daughter had to be takenaway in nine days!

Does this ring a bell? Have yousympathised with your married col-leagues, listening to similar stories? Its quite possible that you haveeven seen women having to make achoice between career and family.

Though the Suris did panic initia-lly, they decided to sow the seeds ofan entrepreneurial venture fromtheir adversity.

When I returned from the U.K,my husband had already opened

our first centre, recalls Preetha Su-ri, then working with Siemensas Senior Consultant.

Kanchana Paati My Grand-mas Place (named after Surismother) opened on August 15,2006, with nine children in an in-dependent bungalow.

Thanks to my exposure to thecity, its people and the marketingbackground I come from, I startedour Nungambakkam centre withinfive days, says Vridhachalam Ga-napathi Suriyanarayanan a.k.a. Su-ri, who has worked for companieslike Xerox, Canon and Toyota.

    A place like your mothers...

Thats their catchline attractingmany corporate working parents.Proof of which is the increasingnumber of centres in the city AnnaNagar, Velachery and Perungudi,

while those in Ashok Nagar and Kil-pauk will come up soon. It is alsomulling over opening branches inBangalore, Hydera-

bad and Cochin.Hyderabad should beour first centre outsideChennai, which we hopeto start between January andMarch, they say.

Their emphasis in not callingKanchana Paati another school orday care centre but My Grandmas

Place is evident from the spa-cious bungalows they have re-

done for children. But, probably, what caught the attention ofmany more working parentswas a centre functioning from 8a.m. to 8 p.m. their USP eventoday.

So, was funding each of theircentres difficult? We hadsaved enough from our well-paying jobs. Money was not aproblem, says Preetha, whoresigned after 15 years of cor-porate experience to turnentrepreneur.

Was it a tough decision totake? While my husband

quit as Director ofBhrigus Software India

to take up the businessfurther, it took about a

year for me to make up mymind. I had second thoughts aboutquitting to do something on myown, explains the ManagingDirector.

    Paatis team

The couple say that every staff who works with them is either amother or a grandmother. Interest-ingly, one of their first team mem-bers, Pamela Samuel, is a retiredprincipal of Chellammal College for

Women. Today, the Suris claim theyhave a good number of mothersfrom the corporate sectors working

with them. Our employees onlywork six hours a day, adds Preetha.

(If you are an entrepreneur with asuccessful business model or know

one, write to us [email protected])

A day care centre that left the Suris in a lurch prompted them to start their own, thus helping many more working parents in similar situations

In the highly competitive world of Kollywood, the veryyoung Tamannaah has managed to be cast oppositeKollywoods top heroes like Suriya, Dhanush and Bha-rath.

Ask her how it happened, and she smiles. I was a greatfan of Suriya, especially after watching Kakha Kakha. When K.V. Anand sir approached me for Ayan opposite

Suriya, I grabbed the opportunity. I am enjoyingworking with K.V. Anand and Suriya. Its a dream

come true. After watching Happy Days Dhanushcomplimented her work in the movie andnow she is acting in Padikkathavan withhim. Padikkathavan is a comedy, Ta-mannaahs first.

    Besides, Tamannaah is very excited

about acting in the Tamil remake ofJabWe Met. The pretty girl from Mumbai is

playing Kareena Kapoors part.I loved Kareenas role in the original. Even

before I was signed on for the remake I made surethat everyone I am close to watched the movie. I was

overwhelmed when I was offered Kareenas role later. HereI am starring opposite Bharath, she says.

Tamannaah has her hands full nowadays, with projectsincluding Ayan with Suriya, Padikkathavan with Dhanush,Anandha Thandavam with new-comer Sidharth and a Telu-gu film, Koncham Ishtamga Konsham Kastamga.

When asked about media speculation of deliberatelyavoiding the role in Puli, she says, I respect S.J. Suryah alot, having worked with him in Viyabari. These talks arebaseless. I was busy with my other shoots and that is why Idid not sign Puli. He knew the reason and totally under-stands.

Despite her busy schedule, she manages to stay fit. I

make sure that I exercise everyday in my gym. Apart fromthat, I maintain a diet. I drink lots of water. I have a SouthIndian diet. I eat well. I make sure that my stamina doesntgo down. I sleep well when I get time.

My dad is my best critic. He liked Kalloria lot because Iwas without make-up and I really expressed myself, shesays.

However, she claims that she is not just daddys girl, add-ing that her parents are there for her always.

Tamannaah denies the rumour that she and Illeana donot get along. I wouldnt mind working with her if I getthe opportunity and time, she says.

Tamannaahs dream is to act in Gowtham Menons mo-vie. Ask her why and she tells you she doesnt know.

Weve heard how GoldieBehl, during a conver-sation with buddy Abh-ishek, narrated the

story of a breed of ancient war-rior kings whove been assignedthe task of preventing evil fromtaking over the world. Abhishek,it seems, convinced Behl tomake the film and promised toact in it to turn idea to reality.

    After watchingDrona, you won-der why.

Theres a miserable Aditya(Abhishek Bachchan) whosmeted out step treatment by hisstepmom (Navneet Nishan) anda SRK-look-like of a brother.

A chance encounter with ma-gician Riz Raizada (K.K. Me-non), an asura in human formfollows, and he is chased down

the street by a bunch of black-

hooded evil incarnates. EnterSonia (Priyanka Chopra) leather, black eyeshadow, flow-ing chiffon, et al and the goonsare driven away. Temporarily.

The rest is about how Adityadiscovers that he, in fact, is aDrona, a race of people as-signed the task of protectingamrit from falling into thehands of the asuras.

The film has its plus-points.There are some eye-catchingspecial effects and stunts, andthe change in landscapes isbrought about with sheer bril-liance. This interspersed withthe narration of myth in graphicnovel form would havemade for an interesting

    watch. If only Abhishek sleep-walks

    through his entire role peren-

nially grumpy, hardly larger-than-life as the role demanded, never making the transitionfrom Aditya to Drona. Close-upshots of his kohl-lined eyes, atmoments supposed to showDronas strengthening of deter-mination, serve no purpose.

Priyanka Chopra carries herwarrior role with conviction andis good in the stunt sequences.Soon, she too is reduced to thedamsel in distress.

K.K. Menon has always beenknown as an actor of subtlety. However, Riz Raizada, the gar-ish, evil magician who com-

    bines sadism with a distorted

sense of humour, is reduced to apoor imitation of the Joker. AndJaya Bachchan seems to havetaken a liking to playing thelonely woman in the castle wait-ing for the kadmon ke aahatofher long-lost son (rememberK3G?).

The clich called suspensionof belief is applicable to all fan-tasy films only as long as therealm of fantasy has somethingbetter to offer.

Australians who sound likeCrocodile Hunter Steve Irwincould soon be a relic of thepast, a report said Sunday. Cit-

ing a new book by Australian Na-tional University academic BruceMoore, the paper said the change

would come about as the need for Australians to distinguish them-selves from their British forebears

    faded.Australians are becoming more

confident with the standard Austra-lian accent -- and that means theresno longer the need for those sorts ofextreme sounds, lexicographerMoore said.

Words like mate would no longerbe pronounced mite as some of theunique characteristics of Australianspeech disappeared, he said.

Meanwhile, the so-called cultivat-ed Australian accent would vanishas fewer people mimicked the En-glish accent and moved toward astandard Australian accent, Mooresaid. Theres no doubt the broadaccent does carry cultural values. Ido not doubt that. Thats why its

used in advertisements, saidMoore, whose new book is titledSpeaking Our Language: The Storyof Australian English.

But in the future that extremeform of it wont be so necessary be-cause the standard accent will carrythose same values.

Moore said the broad accentscame from the need for cultural dis-tinction in the late 19th century

while the posh accents evolved fromthe use of what is commonly knownas Queens English in education inthe late 1800s.
