You can use it to cheer on arock band, take to the mallor, why not, try to overthrowa government the latest

must-have among Thailandsprotest set is a plastic, hand-

    shaped clapper.The clack-clack-clack of the

multi-coloured hands has reso-nated throughout Bangkok dur-ing the months-long campaignby the Peoples Alliance for De-mocracy (PAD) to bring down thenations elected government.

In fact, its spawned a little bitof a minor industry: one vendoroutside Government House currently occupied by the protes-ters says she sells up to 100clappers a day.

The average price is 25 baht(nearly one dollar), depending onthe size. Or you can opt for theflashing light version at 35 baht.

I broke one clapper so now I

have a new one. When you getvery excited you wave it veryhard, explained a middle-agedwoman at the grounds of the

prime ministers offices at Go-vernment House.

The area, seized in August, hassince taken on the air of an out-

door music festival as the protes-ters press their campaign againstgovernment, which they say is acorrupt proxy for ousted and ex-iled premier Thaksin Shinawatra.

Its the fashion, said the same

woman, who did not want to giveher name. You dont have to use

your hands its easy and conve-nient. Kiat Chan, proud ownerof three clappers, says the pro-testers started using them about a

week after their street demon-strations began in May.

The mue tob Thai for handclap has become an unlikelysymbol of the anti-governmentmovement, and the clappers cannow be seen at concerts, sportsevents and shopping malls acrossthe capital.

The Venetian-style Govern-ment House is now the centre ofan organised tent city thatstretches across blocks of the

capitals historic district. You can use it to say to Thai

From ancient Egyptian cere-monial incense to pungentMesopotamian ointmentsand lotions dating back to

medieval France, a newly re-opened French museum tracesperfumes lesser-known past.

The history of perfume is notonly that of the industry linked tofashion or luxury, in whichFrance has become the mainplayer, said the curator of the In-ternational Perfume Museum in

Grasse, near Cannes in the southof France.

Since antiquity, perfume hasalso been at the crossroads oftherapeutics, cosmetics, cuisine, even sacred uses, said Marie-Christine Grasse, according to

whom the museum offers aunique collection in terms of sizeand scope.

    While the picturesque Pro-

vence town that hosts the mu-seum is no longer the heart of theperfume industry, officials hopeit will now serve as a centre forhistory on the fragrance industry.

After three years of renova-tions, the museum has beentransformed from a dusty collec-tion housed in an 18th centurymansion, to a modern exhibitionof artefacts spread across new in-ter-connected buildings.

    The chronological, interactive

and olfactory sense-driven tour of perfumery is presentedalong three themes: seduction, healing and communication.

The collections centrepiece isan 80-kilogramme travel vanitycase once owned by Marie-Antoi-nette, the French queen arguablybest remembered for her extrava-gant tastes.

Fashioned out of mahoganyand leather, the case is riddled

with compartments and drawerscontaining brushes and gadgetsnecessary for the young queenselaborate beauty regime.

The story of perfumery furtherunravels in rooms devoted to the19th century advent of the indus-

try, in which Grasse played a ma- jor role.

The towns name will be famil-iar to viewers ofPerfume: The Sto-ry of a Murderer, a film based on a

novel by German writer PatrickSuskind and following a youngperfumiers search for the ulti-mate scent.

Grasse was a global centre forproducing natural extracts fromthe jasmine, rose and orangeblossom plantations on its peri-phery.

The majority of extracts todaycome from outside France, butGrasse has maintained a footholdin formulating perfumes and

    food flavours.Formulations from Grasse,

where specialists also come touse the museums large researchlibrary, account for more than

half of Frances sales in thesdustries.

Holographic storage of-fers a way to cramhundreds of moviesonto a single DVD-size

disc, but the first commercialoffering, due out next year, isa high-end archival systemthat costs tens of thousandsof dollars and requires spe-cial playback machines.

Now researchers at GEGlobal Research, in Niskayu-

na, N.Y., say that they areclosing in on a mass-marketversion that would be com-patible with older DVDs andCDs technology that GEsays could reach the marketin 2012.

If the project pans out, consumers could hold vastvideo libraries on a few ho-lographic discs alongside theregular DVDs in their livingroom.

GE expects an initial ver-sion of the holographic discto hold 300 gigabytes of data, and future versions will holdas much as one terabyte enough for 40 high-definitionmovies or 200 standard-defi-nition movies. While the firstbuyers might be companiesseeking simpler ways to ar-

chive their data, GE ultimately wants to target the broadermarket. The average consumer

will be able to buy a drive in thenext three or four years that

would have this technology, and they can play everything, says Brian Lawrence, managerof GEs Integrated Polymer Sys-tems Lab. Information is stored

on a CD or DVD as a pattern onthe discs surfaces. Holographicstorage involves, instead, en-coding data using patterns oflight interference within thebody of light-sensitive material. This leads to a much higherstorage capacity, so holograph-ic storage has the potential toeclipse even todays leading

high-capacity optical storageformat, Blu-ray, which can beused to store 50 gigabytes of da-ta on a single disc.

And yet, although severalcompanies are working on ho-lographic storage technology, the only imminent commercialoffering is a high-end systemfrom InPhase, of Longmont,

CO, a spinoff of Alcatel andLucent Technologys BellLabs.

GE is talking to severalelectronics companies aboutcreating playback machines, and it wants the technologyto fit well with existing disc-manufacturing techniques.

While the InPhase versionsandwiches its special opticalrecording media inside an-

other type of plastic, the GEdiscs are made from a poly-carbonate that can be proc-essed with conventionalmanufacturing methods. Thematerial can be melted, in-

jected into a mould, andcooled to form a disc, thesame way that todays opticalmedia are made.

InPhase claims to be un-concerned about competi-tion from GE, arguing thateach company is targeting adifferent market segment. Ithink thats a great designgoal for GE, Rancis says. But for our particular cus-tomer base, none of thosepeople have material onDVDs. We are only doinghigh-end customers.

The most wonderful things inthe world have happened

when man is relaxed, notwhen man is driving himself

to madness. The most wonderfulscientific discoveries also hap-pened when man is relaxed.

Somebody like Isaac Newton worked for 18 years in the lab-oratory without producing any-thing. One day, fed up with work,he goes and sits under a tree; an

apple falls, there you have thelaws of gravity.Somebody fed up with work

wants to have a bath, goes andgets into his bath tub and the wa-ter over flows; there you have thelaws of floatation. Somebodyonce again fed up with work

wants to have a cup of coffee, thecoffee kettle is boiling, there, youhave the locomotives. The most

wonderful things have happenedwhen man is relaxed. Please see,in moments of relaxation, you aremost intelligent.

Why we are talking about ef-fortless living is just this to bringrelaxation to every activity that

you perform. Right now if I askpeople to relax they will becomelax. You know the difference? Orif I ask people to be intense theybecome tense. You have to learnto be intense and relaxed. If youcan maintain your intensity and

relaxation together, all your po-tential will be always used to itsfullest. Your physical and mentalpotential can be used to thishighest possibility, if you knowhow to be intense and relaxed atthe same time. But this tensionand laxity will not get usanywhere.

Relaxation for certain peopleespecially means going andsleeping. They dont see that theycan go to the garden, have a walk

and relax themselves; they dontsee they can have a swim and re-lax themselves.

It need not be so, you can relaxin your study; you can relax in

your work; you can relax in your walk . . . In everything that youdo, you can relax. If you have lovein your heart, life is relaxation. If

you love what youre doing, itsrelaxation. Yoga is to be in thatstate where you are Intense andrelaxed at the same time and thatis when you are at your peakperformance.

If you can maintainyour intensity andrelaxation together, all your potentialwill be alwaysused to its fullest.

Men should stay miles away from mobile phones if they dont want to screw uptheir plans of fathering a child, for a new research has shown that males whotalk for hours on cellphones may damage their sperm. An experiment on semenrevealed evidence of DNA damage after 16 hours of exposure to radiation similarto the output of a mobile phone. To reach the conclusion, researchers at theUniversity of Newcastle built a device to irradiate sperm at the same radio fre-quency as mobile telephone calls. Professor John Aitken, director of the uni-versitys Centre of Excellence in Biotechnology and Development, said they wereable to accurately identify high levels of DNA fragmentation in the sperm. . DNAdamage in spermatozoa has been associated with decreased fertility, increasedrisk of miscarriage and various kinds of disease in offspring, including childhoodcancer, and a number of neurological disorders such as autism, bipolar disorderand spontaneous schizophrenia.

Want to shed those extrapounds and look 10 years

younger? Well, guess what, your desire has just been

fulfilled, all thanks to a British nutri-tionist and his ultimate diet.

    Brainchild of nutritionist Carina

Norris, the ultimate anti-ageing dietwill not only help you shift 10lbs but will also take10 years off your facewithout using any of those anti-age-ing lotions. Food is a great way to

ward off wrinkles and boost energylevels. If you choose wisely, your

weekly shopping cart will be full ofeffective anti-ageing components, that help you boost your health andkeep you slim, The Mirror quotedNorris as saying.

    The anti-ageing diet suggests:

Tuck into oily fishNew York skin doctor Dr Nicholas

Perricone, the diet guru of Holly- wood stars including Kim Cattrall

and Heidi Klum, encourages his pa-tients to eat plenty of oily fish be-cause the essential fats found inthem provide skin-loving antioxi-dants and mop up the free radicalsthat can cause wrinkles and prema-turely aged skin.

The best sources of this essentialfatty acid include salmon, mackerel, fresh tuna steaks and sardines. Thehigh protein content of oily fish alsohelps keep skin firm - and has theadded bonus of keeping you slim.

Drink upWater has been named as the big-

gest anti-ageing component. Essen-tial for good health and good looks,

water plumps up the skin and flush-es out the toxins that cause a dullcomplexion and wrinkles. And diet-icians claim room temperature wa-ter is best, but there are plenty of

other liquid-facelifts like soy milkthat is helpful in speeding up theproduction of collagen - the build-ing bricks of skin.

Get a fruity faceliftGorge on fruits if you want to look

younger. The best anti-ageing fruitis kiwi fruit - one of the richestsources of vitamin C, which is fan-tastic for skin because it helps buildcollagen and mops up ageing tox-ins.

Also recommended are Avocados,as they are jam-packed with vita-mins A and E, which are very effec-tive at fighting wrinkles. One caneven add a portion of berries everyday, as theyre full of antioxidantscalled phytochemicals. Lastly, trysome prunes and raisins.

Skin-loving carbsGet your daily dose of Carbohy-

drates for getting that younger look-ing skin. Porridge oats are a great

way to start the day and look youn-ger.

Oats contain high levels of a min-eral called silicic acid that plumpsup the cells in skin, creating a

youthful bounce. It also slows downthe appearance of fine lines and

wrinkles. Multigrain bread, full ofselenium, instead of white breadmay act as a saviour preserving theelasticity in your skin.

    Age-bustingsuperfoods

    Almonds

Theyre packed full of omega-3fats and protein, which help skin re-pair itself. Plus theyre a greatsource of vitamin E, which studiesshow can prevent wrinkles. Have a

small handful every afternoon.Olive oilScientists found that people living

in hot countries with fewer wrinklesall had high intakes of olive oil.Swap vegetable oil for olive oil, ordrizzle it cold on salads

Adzuki beansThese are a great source of zinc, a

mineral that helps your skin repairitself. Studies show zinc can alsohelp with acne. Buy them cannedfrom the supermarket and addthem to salads and stir-fries.

ApricotsTheyre full of lutein, an antioxi-

dant that helps fight off the ageingeffects of the sun. Snack on thembetween meals, or slice them freshon your porridge.

SpinachLike apricots, spinach is also a

fantastic source of lutein, which wards off sun damage and ageingsunspots. Add a handful to a stir-fryor use in place of lettuce in salads.

    TomatoesTheir magic ingredient is lyco-

pene, a powerful antioxidant. As well as reducing the risk of certaincancers, lycopene also protects theskin against sun damage and keepsit looking younger. Slice them up in

your food or add them to salads.BroccoliIts great for fighting free radicals

in the body. Free radicals are harm-ful substances found in the environ-ment, such as pollution, which ageus. Anything that mops up free rad-icals, like broccoli, is great at keep-ing skin young.

Chop them up and add to stirfries and curries.

    Red wine
