Those residing in and aroundTriplicane or those regularto the Sri ParthasarathySwami temple would recall

an eat-out in the locality by thename Gopalakrishna Bhavan. But, some three years ago the eat-out closed shutters and therecame Sri Krishna Bhavan.

Besides occupying vantage po-sition, the restaurant attracts agood numbers of foodies with itspocket-friendly cuisine and ex-cellent food. Whether it is for rav-enous tourists or regularcommuters, the place provides

great solace once you step in. After all the hustle and bustleoutside coming here is a contrastas it soaks in all the noise.

Above all the place is special forthe interesting cuisines it serves Kancheepuram idli, caulifloweroothappam, adai aviyal and gheeidli (14 pieces soaked with ghee).

Kancheepuram idli is a must-have dish in the temple city of

Kancheepuram, which is about 60kms from greaterChennai. Sri KrishnaBhavan, in a way, hasbrought in more va-riety in its menu byserving Kancheepu-

ram idli with chut-ney, chilli powderand sambar.

Aviyal is a regularitem in orthodox

families of South India. The vege-table dish is usually served duringimportant festivals like TamilNew Year or Ugadi, but here youget the traditional cuisinethroughout the year.

    Other services

Sri Krishna Bhavan also offersoutdoor catering for wedding andother occasions. In fact, theyeven offer to come to the venueand prepare the food.

Quite praiseworthy consider-ing that most restaurants cookfood and bring it to the marriagehall. You can see a number of

temple priests and other staffstopping by to get a quick sip ofcoffee or some evening tiffin.

Gandhi was short-list-ed for the Nobel Prize fivetimes, Norwegian NobelCommittee chief Ole Dan-bolt Mjos has revealed.

For the first four, ma-jority opinion made sure

he did not come by theprize.

But then, at the end of1947, the Nobel Commit-tee finally reached a unan-

But, Mjos said, as events were to turn out Gandhi was assassinated in Janu-ary 1948 upsetting the No-bel Committee plan at thelast moment.

Nobody was conferredwith the Nobel Peace Prizein 1948, the website of theCommittee shows. The

    Nobel Committee chief

was asked why Gandhi, theman from whom MartinLuther King Jr. and NelsonMandela learnt about non-violence, never deemedqualified to be a Nobel lau-reate.

Asked could he not havebeen honoured posthu-mously in the way formerUN secretary general DagHammarskjoeld was in1961, Mjos did not give aclear answer, the reportsaid.

    Unorthodox Sri Lan-

ka spinner AjanthaMendis, who has con-founded batsmen with his

range of variations without a perceptiblechange in his action, has become the talking pointahead of the test series against India. Mendis, 23,destroyed India with a haul of s ix wickets for 13 in thefinal of the Asia Cup one-day competition and shouldmake his Test debut in the series starting on Wednes-day in Colombo. Lets face it, we were just cluelessagainst him and his variations and it was tough onthe batsmen, Indias one-day captain MahendraSingh Dhoni told a news conference following the100-run cup defeat earlier this month. We wereplaying him for the first time and the batsmen justcouldnt pick him.

Mendis, who has played eight one-day internation-als, bowls a mixture of off-breaks, leg-breaks, goo-glies, top-spinners and a new variation dubbed the

carrom ball, which he flicks with the third finger, that batsmen have found difficult to pick. I dontknow where we find these people but once in a

way, once in 10 years, we get these specialbowlers coming from nowhere, Sri Lankas1996 World Cup-winning captain Arjuna Ra-natunga said during a promotional event inMumbai. I think we are blessed with them.

Big-spinning Muttiah Muralitharan, 36,who holds the world record for most numberof test wickets (735), perplexed batsmen the

world over with the doosra, a delivery thatspins the opposite way from the conven-tional direction. He is another sen-sation. Like Murali, he is another as much as I am not comfortable

with the word freak bowler. He is a freak, said Ranatunga,

    whose leadership has often

been credited for Muralith-arans development into a world-class spinner.

different deliveries andhe is mastering onemore,Ranatunga, nowSri Lanka Cricket (SLC)board chairman, said, hiseyes brightening as he

went on to describe the newsensation. It is very interesting: thebatsman will have to be at him allthe time. You cannot lose concen-tration. Sri Lanka, who host In-dia for three Tests followed by afive-match one-day series, named Mendis in their 14-man

In a sport littered with precocious prodigies,41-year-old swimming mum Dara Torresshatters the mould. Torres was a talentedteen herself when she won her first Olym-

pic swimming gold in Los Angeles in 1984.Now shell tackle her fifth Games campaign inBeijing alongside teammates and rivals youngenough to be her children.

US superstar Michael Phelps, 23, calls Torreshis sort-of mom. Torres, whose daughterTessa was born in 2006, says she prefers tothink of herself as a big sister or maybeaunt to her teammates. Its nice to be able

to be there for the kids if they have questions,Torres says. They probably feel comfortabletalking to me. I feel like Im on their level onone hand, but I have all this experience on theother hand that Im maybe not on their level.Ill take that as a compliment that Phelps refersto me as the mom, but I dont know if the kidsthink that.

In search of her 10th medalTorres owns nine Olympic medals, starting

with that first relay gold in 84. Her five medalsin 2000 capped a comeback from a seven-yearretirement. When she launched her latest re-turn, Torres was aiming for another relayberth, and she surprised herself with a victory

in the 100m freestyle, ahead of American rec-ord-holder Natalie Coughlin, at the US trials. I

was shocked when I touched the wall. Icouldnt see the scoreboard, Torres said. With my age and everything, I said what doesthat say? Then I heard the announcer and Icould kind of see it blurry. They need to makethose numbers a little bigger up there for peo-ple my age. After winning the 50m free at thetrials, Torres has elected to forego the 100mfree individual event in Beijing, preferring tofocus her energy on the one-lap sprint and re-lays.

Torres was 16 when she set a 50m free worldrecord in January of 1983. The following yearshe was part of the US 4x100m free relay in Los

Angeles that delivered her first Olympic gold.Over the course of her first career, she wenton to capture 4x100 free relay bronze at theSeoul Olympics, and 4x100 free gold as part ofa world record-setting team in Barcelona.Torres then left swimming, concentrating on aburgeoning career in modelling and media, until launching her first comeback in 1999,

which ended with her five-medal haul in Syd-ney that included three individual bronze (50mfree, 100m free and 100m butterfly). As in herfirst return, Torres knows that her second co-meback is bound to prompt speculation in a

sports world weary of doping scandals.

Doping speculationsThis time around, after discussion with her

coach Michael Lohberg, Torres has met thatissue head on, volunteering for a US Anti-Dop-ing programme that tests a select group of ath-letes far beyond the World Anti-Doping

Agency requirements. When Michael and I were in Rome, and I had some pretty fasttimes, we sat down and said OK, now peopleare going to start talking, Torres says. I

    wanted to be proactive.

She told USADAs Travis Tygart that shewanted extra testing. I told him I wanted to bean open book, Torres says. You can DNA testme, blood test me, urine test me, whatever you

want to do, just test me. I want people to knowI am doing this right, that I am 41 years old andI am clean and I want a clean sport. Havingdone what she can to dispel doubts, Torressays there is only one downside to her history-making bid. Its sort of bittersweet for me be-cause I made my fifth Olympic team, but Imgoing to be away from my daughter for amonth, and thats going to be real hard emo-tionally, she said. Im happy Im going toBeijing.

Ironic but true that the portrayalof Joker by Heath Ledger is thebest swansong possible. Even af-ter coming back home afterwatching the movie, Jokers me-nacing Hi was still ringing inmy ears.

Christopher Nolan does agreat job. All the actors wereperfect and did justice to theirrespective roles. Only drawbackwas the ending as I expected astunning climax. Still, a spectac-ular movie. Must watch

Gothams favourite caped crusader returns inthis sequel for the ages.

But does the movie live up to the hype? Yes.From the dark streets of Gotham to serene HongKong, the movie takes us through an exhilarat-ing ride. A new bat suit, an improved batmobile, and action-packed chase sequences are some ofthe things to look forward to in The DarkKnight. Heath Ledgers portrayal of the psychot-ic clown Joker was extraordinary.

This combined with stunning visual effectscompletes the ingredients for a great movieouting.

For all those who went dumbstruck watching Christopher Nolanslast venture; for all those who thought what more can a directordeliver, who has just touched the apex of modern film making withThe Prestige; the answer comes in the form of The Dark Knight. The transition of a comic legend to the big screen has never been sopowerful and influential both visually and psychologically.

For the entire time that you are going to be in the theatre tryingto take a glimpse of batmans marvels, you will find yourself gapingat the sheer brilliance of the character portrayal of the cynicalJoker. Heath ledger just deserves all the awards that Hollywoodcan offer for his role in this flick because this joker is not like anyother renditions of the past. As the critics agree, he deserves aposthumous Oscar win.

Finally, after going through this two and a half hour ride, youwill come out with the realisation that you have just seen amasterpiece of your time that will go in as an all-time classic.Nolan handles the story as more than just a comic story adap-

tation, this movie talks about chaos, anarchy and even orderin the world that are blended so smoothly in the dialogues. So catch up with the Joker as soon as you can and youwill be forever indebted to Christopher Nolan forbringing to us such an epic.

Barney Rubble was usually the calming Yin to Fredsraging Yang and his affable, jovial manner usuallyinfluenced Fred to more thoughtful decisions. And

    Donkey in Shrek

Donkey provides the softer side to his main guy. Hehelps Shrek relate to the world and helps the audience relate to Shrek by breaking down the wallsand peeling the onion that is Shrek. Once you addin the humour along with the unquestioning loyaltythe annoying habits of Donkey just dont seem so big

You have to appreciate Donkey, just as Shrek finallydoes. He provides the heart Shrek always neededeven if his big mouth came along with it.

Sam Gamgee in Lord of the Rings

Sam Gamgee should be a synonym of the word loyalHis credentials include: fighting a giant spider, bat-tling numerous Orcs, leaving his home and following

Frodo half way around Middle-Earth and literallycarrying a unconscious Frodo on his back up amountain filled with lava. Maybe blind loyalty isntthe best thing for a sidekicks own safety, but if he is

your sidekick, you have to appreciate it. You mightsay it is precious.

    Robin in Batman

When you hear the word Batman, in the back o your head you most likely say to yourself andRobin. If the name Batman seems to conjure theafterthought and Robin with little consciousthought then you have to be doing something rightas his sidekick, which acrobatically vaults you to the#1 sidekick. While Robin is important, it seems theperson portraying Robin isnt particularly importantBatman has had several different people in the Robinuniform including a female.
