Are you on Orkut? Are youunique? Have you created acommunity for the benefit ofsomeone else? If your answer

is a loud YES, you might be the nextOrkut Hero.

Its not an award that Orkut hon-ours you with; its two individualseffort to encourage your efforts. Andto help those in search of people

with certain talents.orkutheroes.com is a blog started

by Zaheer Abbas, which contains write-ups about inspirational

people.Media entrepreneur Zaheer Ab-bas (27), better known as Zazo, anative of Rajasthan, joined Orkut

just to increase his network offriends and keep in touch with oldbuddies. But as he began to visitother communities, it opened hiseyes to peoples contributions to-

wards making of groups and com-munities.

Zazo felt the media has manytimes projected Orkut as a culpritbehind many nefarious activities. After going through certain com-munities I found that not everyoneis wasting their time on Orkut.

There are some who are friendly, trustworthy and successful and whohave given a lot of their time build-ing something inspirational and in-formative in the form of Orkutcommunities on different subjects, adds Zazo.

But how will others come toknow about them? The questionplagued Zazo and made him opentwo communities on Orkut Or-kuts Hall of Fame and Rated

    Wow!But membership to these com-

munities is on invitation-only basis.Generally people gaze throughcommunities and join them out oftheir own interest, but these two

communities are dedicated to someoutstanding personalities for theiractivities, profession and achieve-ments, which can be a lesson in mo-tivation, inspiration and knowledgeto anyone. And we invite them, says Zazo. In case you are in searchof such people, a visit to these com-

munities with help you.Zazo is not alone in this whole

process. His sister Tarannum (23),quit her job at IBM Daksh to joinher brothers initiatives. I was veryinspired by my brothers initiativeand decided to extend my full sup-port to take it forward, says Tara

proudly. And there started their idea of ex-panding it outside Orkut. Zazothought the hard work of Orkutmembers should be appreciatedmore.

He started his blog in the year2008 orkutheroes.com and thatshow the concept of Orkut Heroescame into being.

This blog contains profiles of peo-ple who have achieved in differentfields. We select people from theiractive, useful and helpful contribu-tion to any subject of interest likeacademics, social work, etc. Due tocomplaints about fake IDs, he clar-

ifies with the friends in his/her friendlist. We see the types of communitieshe/she has joined and his/her partici-pation by sending scraps, messages andcommunity activities. After a thoroughscanning we try to approach that personeither by scrap or by email if possible.

After conducting more than 50 inter-

views and the going through responseshe got from his readers he is now intoupgrading his website.

Though I have won many notableawards for music I was more recognisedamong my online friends as a hero afterI won the Orkut Heroes award, says Sa-meep Kulkarni, a sitarist, one of the he-roes of Zazos blog. Orkutheroes.comhas become a platform for many onlinecommunities to take it further frommere online work to real meetings andgroundwork.

    AB.Tech in Metallurgy from

IIT-Madras, a nine-yearstint with Infosys, a three- year entrepreneurial spell

with Bangalore Labs and now sixeventful years with Hippocam-pus.

Umesh Malhotra, founder ofHippocampus, is a man on themove, quite literally. The Banga-

lore-based firm is into revivinginterest in reading in children, which it achieves through

unique programmes crafted fordifferent socioeconomic strataof society.

While in cities, mainly Banga-lore and Chennai, Hippocampusis famous among children as aplaying, meeting and learningcentre.

In semi-urban and rural pock-ets of India it is winning a silentrevolution by promoting readingthrough various friendly initia-tives for children.

In cities, it mooted the idea ofstarting for-profit libraries, through which it generates mon-ey, whereas in villages it initia-tives are completely social and

work predominantly on dona-tions from people and institu-tions.

We consider ourselves an or-ganisation that conceives, pilotsand shares ideas. We today runover six libraries in Bangalore. Our efforts to take reading to ru-ral segments have us reach fromthe slums of Kolkata to Cambo-dia and we are working in villageschools from Hassan to Tiruvan-namalai, Malhotra briefs about

    their reach.

Start of a journeyHippocampus Reading Foun-

dation (HRF), its social unit, works with disadvantaged com-munities to establish Active Li-braries in government schoolsand community centres or byengaging women as franchiseesof the learning centres.

In villages and slums it part-ners with NGOs to start a learn-ing centre on a collaborativeeffort. So far around 75,000children have benefited through150 libraries present in the twostates of Tamil Nadu and Karna-taka, says Malhotra. A commu-nity library in a city costsbetween Rs. 7 and 10 lakh, in ur-

ban government school with 300children it costs around Rs.30,000 and in a village it is be-tween Rs. 3,000 and Rs. 5,000.

Malhotra believes that chil-dren want to read and to inspirethem to read more, they mustenjoy it. Some of his challengesare to involve parents in all seg-ments of society as they dontread much; confronting parents who are very academically-fo-cussed and countering many

other modern distractions chil-dren have, including television

and video games. In fact, working with rural In-

dia is a lot easier than urbanslums, he says.

    EmployabilityGrow by Reading, an activity-

based programme of the HRFthat enables children to assesstheir own reading levels and im-prove reading skills, is showingthe path in other states, too.

    We have five women who

have accepted to take up fran-chises in Chitradurga district,

explains Malhotra. They women from self-help gro who invest Rs. 5,000 to runlearning centres all themselves.

Men have the sametaste when it comesto telling who theyfind hot, while wom-

en fail to agree with each oth-er, suggests a study.Led by Wake Forest Univer-

sity psychologist DustinWood, the study has revealedthat there is much more con-sensus among men about

who they think is attractive, when compared with women.

Men agree a lot moreabout who they find attractiveand unattractive than womenagree about who they find at-tractive and unattractive. Thisstudy shows we can quantifythe extent to which men agreeabout which women are at-tractive and vice versa, said

    Wood.During the study, over 4,000

participants, between the agegroup of 18 to more than 70,

rated photographs of men and women (ages 18-25) for at-tractiveness on a 10-pointscale ranging from not at allto very.

In exchange for their partic-ipation, the raters were told

    what characteristics theyfound attractive compared

with the average person. Before the participants

judged the photographs forattractiveness, the researchersrated the images for how se-ductive, confident, thin, sen-sitive, stylish, curvaceous(women), muscular (men),traditional, masculine/femi-

nine, classy, well-groomed, orupbeat the people looked.

Revealing those factorshelped the researchers figure

out what common character-istics appealed most to wom-en and men.

It was found that mensjudgments of womens attrac-tiveness were based primarilyaround physical features, andthat they rated highly those

    who looked thin and seduc-tive.

Most of the men in thestudy also rated photographsof women who looked confi-dent as more attractive.

As a group, the women rat-ing men showed some prefer-ence for thin, muscularsubjects, but disagreed on

how attractive many men inthe study were.

As far as we know, this isthe first study to investigate

whether there are differencesin the level of consensus maleand female raters have in theirattractiveness judgments. These differences have impli-cations for the different expe-riences and strategies thatcould be expected for menand women in the dating mar-ketplace, said Wood.

Wood said that the study re-sults could have implicationsfor eating disorders and howexpectations regarding attrac-tiveness affect behaviour.

He said: The study helpsexplain why women experi-ence stronger norms than

men to obtain or maintaincertain physical characteris-tics. Women who are trying toimpress men are likely to be

found much more attractive ifthey meet certain physicalstandards, and much less ifthey dont. Although men arerated as more attractive by

women when they meet thesephysical appearance stan-dards too, their overall judgedattractiveness isnt as tightlylinked to their physicalfeatures.

Older participants weremore likely to find people at-tractive if they were smiling.

The study has appeared intheJournal of Personality andSocial Psychology.

In contrast, top seeds Paes and his Zimbabwean partner Cara Blackdidnt even have to step on the court to advance as they got a walkover

from the Slovak-Italian pair of Michal Mertinak and Mara Santangelo.Seeded 13th the Bhupathi-Sania combine was in for a tough fight from thelocals. In the first set, that lasted 51 minutes, both the pairs couldnt notcha break point and it went on serve all along. The Indians, however, ended the deadlock by winning the tie-breaker 7-4to go one up. If the joy and emotion that lit up

one of Wimbledons outsidecourts late on Friday was storedin a battery, it would probably

have had enough power to run themuch-talked about Centre Courtroof. Courtesy of another epic five-set encounter, Indo-Pak duo Pra-kash Amritraj and Aisam-ul-HaqQureshi set up a third round tieagainst fourth seeds Mahesh Bhu-pathi of India and Mark Knowles ofthe Bahamas, to be played onCourt 14 on Monday.

Cue scenes of delirium amongthe spectators on the outside courtas drinks went flying and strangershugged. Nobody cared aboutwho was Pakistani and who wasIndian, Qureshi, Pakistans lead-

ing player said. They were all justsupporting one team. It felt sogood. This is the first time therewere so many people from Pakis-tan watching me live. Even my 18-

    month-old nephew was there.

Though by the time it was finish-ing he was sleeping, he grinned.

British youngsters, with barelyany of their compatriots left tocheer, were so roused by thematch that at the end they werescrambling for autographs andyelling; Youre our favouriteplayers now! They werent theonly ones caught up in the frenzy.

Forgetful AmritrajSo focused was the 25-year-old

Amritraj at the conclusion that heforgot what happened at the endof the match. On all six matchpoints they put in a good firstserve, he said, only to be correct-ed by Qureshi. No the last one

was a second serve. You hit a fore-hand down the line, the 29-year-old said, playfully punching hispartners arm.

    Amritrajs father Vijay, twice a

    Wimbledon quarter-finalist in 1973

and 1981 and who also featured inthe James Bond film Octopussy, was courtside for the encounterand despite wearing a dark suit theheat was not the only thing get-ting to him. He was pretty close tohaving a heart attack, his son joked, making Qureshi burst outlaughing. He was getting a littletight. He had one five-setter twodays ago and another one today.

Vijay was just thankful his boycame out on top. Stressful gameto watch, but a wonderful end-ing, said the 55-year-old TV com-mentator for an Asian network.

Worlds apartThough the likes of Court 11 are

a mere stones throw from theshowpiece Centre and number onecourts, those that get drawn onthem are worlds apart from thetop players. The Indo-Pak duo hadto get through two qualifyingmatches and after overcoming16th seeds Ross Hutchins and Ste-phen Huss in round one, are nowthe only qualifiers left in the draw.

Yet Qureshi, ranked 85th in dou-

bles, enjoys his lifestyle and thecompanionship among the lesstalked-about players. The funnything is I know both of them sowell, he said of their secondround opponents Philipp Marx ofGermany and Rameez Junaid ofAustralia. Two or three weeksago I was playing in Germany, andwe hung out in the evenings all thetime, Qureshi said. They alsocheered for us during our qualify-ing matches and they were cheer-ing for us on the first day. Thatsthe beauty about this sport.

Amritraj and Qureshi are also fa-miliar with Mondays opponentBhupathi, and will need to be attheir best to derail the 11-times

grand slam doubles and mixeddoubles champion. Hes a goodplayer but weve played with eachother so much. I think we have areally good shot, Amritraj said, backed up by Qureshi. We almosthave nothing to lose. We can relaxand theyll have all the pressure, the Pakistani added.

Im not proud of the times that Ive drunk too much and been rude to someoneor broken team rules. Now Im out of that environment, that wont happen

anymore for those people in that team and for me.Andrew Symonds

Even Sir Alex (Ferguson) will need a licence if he has tocoach Mohun Bagan. If the Asian Football Confeder-ation (AFC) has its way, all I-League coaches in thecountry will need to have a minimum A licence to

take charge of their teams. Naturally, the diktat has sentIndias soccer coaches in a tizzy.

A few of Indias multiple national league-winning coach-es are likely to lose their jobs if the rules are implemented

this year. The AFC maintains that these coaches do not fitthe AFC Champions League criteria. We have to take adecision whether to allow these coaches to function in theleague, All-India Football Federation secretary Alberto Co-laco says.

The federation had earlier approachedboth the FIFA and AFC for a rapproche-ment, considering the vast coachingexperience of the persons con-cerned, but the ice didnt melt.Taking a strong stand on the is-sue, AFC Champions LeagueProject Departments commu-nication head Steve Kim says:We understand the situation. However, by 2012 all coachesshould have A licence at least. In addition, from 2013 onlycoaches with S licence will be

    acceptable. There will be noexceptions.

Although the AFC has madethe coaches licensing mandatoryfor all participating teams in itspremier club competition AFCChampions League many coachesin the richer European version of theChampions League do not have thenecessary degree. Many famous Eu-ropean club managers fall in thiscategory. But theAFC is

adamant. From AFCs perspective, we are aware of thedifference between manager in English Premier Leagueand Head Coach in India. But in AFCs system, they willbe registered as Head Coach. Even Sir Alex (Ferguson)needs to have the coaching licence if he takes charge ofMohun Bagan, Kim says.

The hapless Indian coaches are now trying to find waysto hold on to their high-paying jobs. Chirag United coachSubrata Bhattacharya, who had earlier coached MohunBagan to national league glory, says: I have an AFC Clicence and for the last couple of years I have been con-

templating doing a combined A and B licence course. But I didnt know who to approach and where thesecourses are conducted. The AIFF should have been re-sponsible enough to furnish us with the necessary in-formation. For their lackadaisical approach we are nowgoing to lose our jobs.

He now plans to get his degrees in order before the nextedition of the I-League starts a few months later.

Current Bagan coach Karim Bencherifa, meanwhile, isexpected to complete his A licence diploma while vaca-tioning in Singapore. The other Kolkata side, East Bengal, plans to appoint A licence-holder Mridul Banerjee astheir coach, with present coach Subhash Bhowmick tak-ing over as technical director. I dont expect myself to goin for some diploma after tasting success at every level asa coach, Bhowmick says. Earlier I was interested butthe federation or the AFC always kept us out of the loop.

You cannot suddenly wake up and try to be too strict. The inclusion of foreign coaches in the list David

Booth, Zoran Djordjevic and Bencherifa upsets the AIFFmore. All three have handled several continental bigwigsbefore taking a plunge into Indian football, but the AFChas refused to go by reputations alone. Mahindra Unit-eds Booth, the former Vietnam and Brunei nationalcoach, must take a UEFA A licence course to be eligiblesince the FA Advanced Licence that he had has alreadyexpired. The Goan sides are better off with most of theircoaches having the necessary diploma.

National skipper Baichung Bhutia has, however, comeout in support of the men under fire. It is important tohave a licence but degrees alone dont make a goodcoach, Bhutia says. Coaches must be given one or two

years to equip themselves. The federation must supportthem in this endeavour.

The AFC too says its ready to come to their rescue.AFC provides an opportunity to coaches to get a licence

through Vision Asia, AFCs elite education pro-gramme and satellite programme (region ba-

sis). The concerned coaches can e-mail usinquiring about the details of theprogramme and enrol themselves

online, Kim says. We will givetime for head coaches to get

S license by 2012. But from2013, there would be no

    exception.

Like Elvis before him, Michael Jackson is toppingthe charts in death as in life.

And the King of Pop is rivaling the King of Rocn Roll in another category as well posthumou

sales of memorabilia.More than 15,500 Michael Jackson-related item

were being offered for sale on Saturday at online auction house eBay.com, two days after the sudden deathof the singer in Los Angeles at the age of 50. Theyrange from Web domain names michaeljacksonmemorial.com, for example at hopeful prices of one million dollars or more to copies of US newspaperfeaturing front-page news of his death for as little as 99cents.

eBays home page displays a special Rememberingthe King of Pop category offering Memorabilia, MusicAutographs, Records.

The collectibles for direct sale or auction include Michael Jackson posters, dolls, ticket stubs, concert programmes, newspapers, magazines, tote bags, pinsbadges, stickers, T-shirts and other clothing.

And, of course, albums, hundreds and hundreds of albums. One of the more unusual items listed on eBay is awhite glove doubling as an invitation to a Michael Jackson party. It can be had for 50,000 dollars with the moneypurportedly going to support an orphanage in Kyrgyzstan

A rare and original black felt fedora said to have beenautographed by Michael Jackson himself has attracted 14bids, the highest 9,899 dollars.

Dozens of replica red leather jackets like the ones Jacksonwore in the music videos of Thrillerand Beat Itare on salefor prices ranging from hundreds to thousands of dollars.

Over at online retail store Amazon.com, the top 15 sellingalbums were all by Jackson including two made with hibrothers when they were the Jackson 5.

Nine of the top 10 selling albums at Apples iTunes musi

store were from the King of Pop withThe Essential Michae

Jackson leading the way. Seven of the top 10 songs beingdownloaded on iTunes were by the singer, with Man in theMirror currently the most popular. The surge in Jackson popularity was not limited to the United States. Jackson was alsoset to top the British album chart on Sunday.

His greatest hits album, Number Ones, is set for top spot andup to half a dozen of the singers other albums could also makethe Top 75, according to the Official Charts Company.

We always find where a great icon dies that theres a massive uplift in their music sales as fans want to connect andexpress their grief through the records, said Gennaro Castaldoof HMV.

Weve seen this with people like John Lennon, Elvis, JohnnyCash and Frank Sinatra over the years. With Michael Jackson inparticular, he was just on the cusp of a big comeback anywayand we were already beginning to see a lift in sales.

Jackson had been scheduled to play the first of 50 comebacconcerts in London on July 13.

If you are as old as me andfrom Chennai, chances are

you would have be an awe-struck school kid who waited

and waited at the erstwhile Alan-kar theatre on Anna Salai to get aticket and watch the now Gover-nor of California stride out buttnaked in the opening sequence ofTerminator 2: Judgement Day ineasily what must be the greatestactioner ever.

Few cult movies measure up tothe Terminator franchise. Themovie firmed up the cinematicgenius of James Cameron per-haps the only director who knowshow to make really good sequels,

examples Aliens and T2: Judge-ment Day as well as the block-buster hero status of ArnoldSchwarzenegger.

Which is where the problemslie James Cameron has disso-

ciated creatively from the fran-chise. To him, the series was over

with Arnie signing off Astlavista,Baby and being lowered into thesmouldering liquid metal by

young John Connor. But Holly-wood seldom allows a good thingto be. Studio executives, greedyfor the millions, came out withthe pretty average follow-up, T3:Rise of the Machines, shunned bycritics and fans alike. At least, ithad Arnie in it.

The big question now is wheth-er Terminator: Salvation is worththe ticket price.

Blame it on Judgement Dayand the nuclear holocaust, thepuny John Connor (played byNick Stahl in T3: Rise of the Ma-chines) has metamorphed into a

grunting soldier. In playing themessianic leader of the rebellionagainst the machines, ChristianBale loses his cape and hoodfrom Batman series but not hisridiculous voice as he looks per-

petually upset and suffering froma severe hangover. He grunts his

motivational talk through radio, offering words of solace and hopefor rebel factions all over the

world who have been driven un-derground by the machines thathaunt them.

The action begins with the re-bels launching an assault on a re-search and development facilityof Skynet, the organisation thatrevolutionises artificial intelli-gence and manufactures termi-nators. Inadvertently the rebelsfree a prisoner Marcus Wright(played thankfully by a soberlooking Sam Worthington) whoseems to be following a pre-des-tined path towards the Skynetheadquarters. The third protago-

nist of the tale is a teenager KyleReese (Anton Yelchin), the to-befather of John Connor. Its best

you dont worry about this if youdont already know the Termina-tor franchise.

The machines are huntingdown Kyle Reese and John Con-

nor to crush the rebellion. Butthe rebel headquarters an un-dersea submarine comman-deered by one General Ashdown(Michael Ironside wasted in aninsignificant role) think theyhave the ultimate weapon againstSkynet.

The destinies of all the protag-onists are intertwined as theybrave the onslaught of an army ofmachines and eventually end up

with the classical explanation of:what is it that makes ushuman?

Though visually far superior toits prequels, Terminator: Salva-tion suffers from a story and ascript that shows incredible fa-

tigue in trying to reinvent and re-energise a franchise. The firstthree movies were essentiallychase-and-run thrillers. That themachines looked very humanadded to the intrigue.

But with Salvation, the fchise moves in another direc

that of post-apocalyptic draThe movie looks more likeMad Max series, more like a cing to terms with a post-aplyptic scenario. Every thing I mean every single thing lobleak and lost.

In ways similar to how therassic Park series keep runby adding more and morthrills by way of introdubetter looking dinosaurs

working on the plot the Tenatorfranchise too seems to hlost its way. There are a wbunch of new terminaaround but somehow they halook threatening.

    The only cheering point fo

at least was a 30 second came you know who. So what comes by way of a digitally ged image? I was sighing of wcould have been or rather wshould not have been.
