    NAME TAG SUNDAYSEPTEMBER 7

Did you ever forget a name or a face? Of courseyou have, it happens to all of us. Did you everwonder who that person was in the last row of pews? Over the years, we have tried to encourageour members to wear name tags when we gathertogether for worship. Frankly this experiment has-nt worked out as we would have liked. We forgetto get our name tags off the pegs and sometimeseven when we remember, it is difficult to disentan-gle them one from the other, and so we give up.

Beginning on September 7 and continuing thefirst Sunday of each month we will hand out stick on name tags each Sunday morning. The usherswill hand them out with the bulletin, but they willnot be in the bulletin. We ask that each personwear their name tag on that Sunday as a sign of our fellowship together in the Body of Christ.

If you are one of those folks who like to wearyour permanent name tag and wants to continue todo so, please do. In fact you are more than wel-come and even encouraged to wear it each andevery Sunday. The old name tag holders will betaken down.

    Pastoral Perspective...Ruminations and Reflections

On Sunday afternoon, August 10, I officiated at a committal service for Laura CasePrice at Greenvale Cemetery. She was an almost ninety year old woman who died in Maine. Amemorial service had been held in Maine in March and now her ashes were to be interred nextto her husband who died in 1969.

The vast majority of those reading these words have never heard of Laura Case Price. Her husbands father, Dr.George Price, was a physician in Fairport for many years. He died in1947. The house he and his family lived in was later bought by Bob and Winnie Wagner andcame down during the urban renewal of the village in the late 1970s.

Greenvale Cemetery, for those who have never noticed it is on the other side of EastChurch Street down a block or so from the church. In it are the mortal remains of many earlyFairport/Perinton Pioneers. Many of those buried there were part of First Church and contrib-

uted to its life and mission over the years.

I parked at church and walked down wandering through the old head stones and readingnames. After the service I walked back up to church. I looked up and saw our steeple above thetrees; I imagined that this scene could have been, minus the cars, from the 1880s and even be-fore. Our building is lovingly kept with an inviting look about it, reaching out to offer a place of worship for one and all.

These ruminations got me thinking, as we move toward a new program year, about howwe might reach out to more people in our community with the good news of our faith and an

invitation to come and be part of this family of Gods people which we call First Congrega-tional United Church of Christ.

Are there ways that we can use our long heritage in this community as a way to reachout? I would guess that there are those who are searching for a relationship with God whowould seek out a place that is historically rooted and yet open to new winds of the spirit. In mylatest blog on fairportucc.org , I mentioned the survey that was recently taken that showedunchurched folks various styles of church architecture and asked them for their preferences. Itwas interesting that the vast majority chose the traditional style rather than the typical subur-ban church building. What does this tell us? Maybe nothing; yet, maybe there is somethingdeep down in folks, even un-churched ones, that yearn for a connection to something larger, older, and deeper than the latest fad. What does this say for our outreach?

These are some questions Im thinking about as we move toward September. Let meknow your thoughts and ideas. You can do that by using historic instruments of communicationlike the letter or more up-to-date ones like e mail ( [email protected] )

    Your pastor,

    John

    WEDNESDAY COMMUNIONRESUMES SEPTEMBER 10

On Wednesday September 10 the weeklynoon communion service will resume. Thisbrief service is an opportunity to gatherabout the Lords Table and be renewed byChrists presence. It is an opportunity for amid week time of refreshment and renewal.

The service follows the 11:00 AM Biblestudy, Steps Toward Christian Maturity which is led by Kelly Weidman.

You do not have to attend the Bible study tocome to communion. Invite your friends to thismid week worship opportunity.

    MEMBERSHIP CLASSES SETFOR FALL

A series of two classes will be held to intro-duce those interested in church membership tothe mission and work of First Church, and theUnited Church of Christ. These classes will beheld on Monday September 22 and MondaySeptember 29 from 7-8:30 pm in the SnowRoom. If you are interested in finding out moreabout First Church this is an invitation to attend. There will be plenty of time for questions anddiscussion. Call Pastor Cedarleaf at 223-8172or e-mail him at [email protected] and let him know that you will be there.

THE TRUTH ABOUTTHE UNITED CHURCH OF CHRIST

Gay marriage; Jeremiah Wright, Boycott Israel, God is Still Speaking. Is the United Church of Christ merely another political entity committed to a left wing social agenda? Is it true that youcan believe anything and still be a member of the United Church of Christ? In fact, does it reallymatter what you believe at all?

As is so often the case, those outside often define who and what those inside are. In the recentpresidential primaries, people who knew nothing about the United Church of Christ, suddenly wereconfronted by the Rev. Jeremiah Wright. Is this who we are?

Are we indeed united or rather is there a slipped i in our name? Are we really the Untied Churchof Christ? Are we a church or just a collection of individuals? Is Christ the center of our life to-gether, or some other agenda?

As a congregation which has been a part of this denomination since its beginning, it is importantto look at such questions. We will do so in a Four Part series beginning Wednesday September24 from 7-8:30 pm in the Snow Room. Our thinking will be based on the book, Believing, Caring, and Doing by Gabriel Fackre. Dr. Fackre is the Abbot Professor of Christina Theology, Emeritus, atAndover Newton Theological School in Newton Centre, Massachusetts. Dr. Fackre has preachedand taught in our church over the years.

This four part conversation will take place on September 24, October 1, October 8 and October15 in the Snow Room. Sign-up sheets are up on the moveable bulletin board in Fellowship or call, e-mail or write to the church office and let us know that you will be there. While the book is not re-quired to take the class, orders will be taken for those interested in owning it.

What does Jesus have to say about some of the hot button issues which confront Christianstoday particularly as we move toward an important Presidential election? Do religion andpolitics mix? Lets discuss what might be the rightful role of faith in politics during adult edu-cation classes on Sunday morning. Join us!

These classes will be held during Christian Education time following the worship service.Classes take place in the Snow Room. (For more information on Jesus for President, see re-lated article in this newsletter.)

Whats Coming Up in Adult Education

The Role of Faith in PoliticsSeptember 14-October 19, 2008

In the year 1896, The Reverend Charles Sheldon, a Congregational minister, published abook entitled, In His Steps . It was a novel and may well have been the most circulated book published in late 19 th century America. Its signature phrase was what would Jesus do? Inrecent years we have seen bracelets with the letter WWJD : What would Jesus do? Every-one has a take on this question particularly when it comes to social and political issues.

Do religion and politics mix? Of course they do because our faith should influence every-thing we do. Should the churchs support particular candidates for political office? Some think they should to make sure that the right people are elected. Others feel strongly that this is notthe role of the church. What would Jesus do? What does Jesus have to say about some of thehot button issues which confront Christians today and particularly as we move toward animportant Presidential election?

Dear Friend of Safe Journey,As a loyal supporter of Safe Journey, youmight have read or heard about our suspen-sion of services because of financial prob-lems. We thought you might be interested toknow what has been happening since the firstnews came out.

First, let us give you some background. SafeJourney temporarily suspended operations inmid June to restructure and address a severefinancial crisis. As one of five outreach minis-tries under the corporation of the EcumenicalMinistries of Perinton (EMP), the financialcrisis at Safe Journey had serious ramifica-tions not only for Safe Journey but on theother four EMP ministries. To avoid jeopard-izing the good works of EMP as a whole, theleadership of Safe Journey, in cooperationwith the EMP Board, took a proactive, neces-sary and extremely difficult step to insure thefuture of Safe Journey while protecting theassets of the greater corporation. The decisionwas not made in haste and all involved wereacutely aware and saddened by this necessaryaction.

The decision to suspend client services, beforefunds ran out completely, afforded the agencyadequate time to transition all of their activeclients to other area service providers. Ensur-ing that the clients had alternative means of support from members of the Monroe CountyDomestic Violence Consortium was of para-mount concern to all involved.

On June 9 th, the EMP Board of Directorsvoted to hire an Interim Director and ap-pointed a Search Committee to interview pos-sible candidates. We are pleased to announcethat Allison OMalley has been approved bythe EMP Board on the unanimous recommen-dation of the Search Committee. Alli hasbeen a member of the Safe Journey SteeringCommittee and has an extensive business

background, particularly in the area of marketing, public relations and management. With Alli inplace, Safe Journey is beginning its formal reor-

ganization period as of today, July 7th

    .

The major items in the Interim Directors job de-scription are to lead the restructuring process andto recruit a committee of volunteers with expertisein specific areas. With the Reorganization Com-mittee in place, the task is two fold. First it is nec-essary to research and determine the need for andtype of services required by local victims of do-mestic violence. Once the future direction of SafeJourney has been decided, it is necessary to de-

velop a detailed business and financial plan to ac-complish the tasks. A final recommendation is tobe presented to the EMP Board for its approval bymid September. It is hoped that this timeline willallow for the reopening of Safe Journey in time tocelebrate the agencys 10th Anniversary in Octo-ber.

We invite you to join us in the restructuring proc-ess by praying for a successful outcome, volun-teering to support the restructuring efforts or send-

ing a monetary donation. If you have questions orwould like more information as to how you canhelp, please contact us. Although the Safe Journeyoffice location has changed, the contact informa-tion remains the same:

MISSION NEWSThe Miracle of Healing... Pedro is a 58 year old gentleman who came to our

clinic in Arroyos y Esteros, Paraguay, and consulted with our doctor, Patricio Ramos, regardingshoulder pain. Patricio started him on medication and asked him to return in a week. The fol-

lowing week Pedro still could not raisehis arm higher than 90 degrees due to pain, and reportedthat he had been like this for over a year. I talked with Patricio and we agreed that he needed aninjection of steroids. After I injected Pedros shoulder I asked him to go ahead andtry movinghis arm. Pedro was amazed. He was pain free and could move his arm any way he wanted. Heleft the room and showed everyone in the waiting room what he could do. He stayed for the restof our clinic and continued to show off his renewed mobility.

The next week Patricio saw Pedro again and realized he needed a second injection, andasked me if I could show him how to do it. Though he was a family practice doctor with 8 yearsof experience in rural Paraguay, he did not know how to perform this simple procedure. So Italked Patricio through it, showing him how to determine the proper site for injection and howto sterilize the skin. Now we have a respected gentleman who is not only free of pain, but is inthe community talking about his successful treatment at our clinic. And we have a doctor whoknows a new way to give relief to patients when other methods do not work. Sometimes eventhe simplest things have effects we cannot imagine

We forgetto get our name tags off the pegs and sometimeseven when we remember, it is difficult to disen-

tangle them one from the other, and so we give up.

MORNING CIRCLEMorning Circle will resume meet-

ings on September 9 th at 10 AM inFellowship Hall. Joanne Haag willspeak to us about PerintonsS.O.F.I. ( Senior Options for Inde-pendence) which assists older peopleto remain in their homes.

New members are always wel-come. Bring a sandwich for lunchbeverage and dessert are provided.

EVENING CIRCLEThe Evening Circle will start their

new program year with a Pot Luck

Supper on September 15th at 6:30 PM.in Fellowship Hall.

Janice Coon will demonstrate howto create a Fall Arrangement withnatural media. At the end of the eve-ning this arrangement will be raf-fled. ($1.00 per ticket)

    Come and join the fun.

WILL YOU HAVE A LITTLE EXTRA TIME THIS FALL?Some of your elderly neighbors occasionally need a ride to a medical appointment, to the phar-macy, to purchase groceries, to go to the bank. Can you help?
