TransitionsBy Father Luke Melackrinos

In writing this article, I am beset with a heavy heart as we are in the midst of a major transition at the Cathedral of St. Paul that is sending my good friend and brother in Christ, Fr. Andreas to a new beginning. I am certainly sad to see him go, but am proud to say that I know that he will continue the work he has begun here at his new assignment at Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church in

Bridgeport, Connecticut.

After three years, it’s hard to imagine our Cathedral without Fr. Andreas, Presvytera Anthoula, Niko and Petro. They have become part of our family and fixtures of our Cathedral. I know they will offer the best they can in the service of Christ in His Holy Vineyard. We will formally say goodbye to Fr. Andreas on November 27th. It will be a special day where we only celebrate one Divine Liturgy then have a special reception immediately after. I look forward to seeing everyone there. We also are hopeful for many visits from Fr. Andreas and his family and we will definitely visit Holy Trinity for their feastday vespers while Fr. Andreas serves there.

We have the blessing to be witnesses to the ordination of Peter Zougras to the Holy Diaconate on Novermber 13th. This also will be a Sunday where we celebrate one Divine Liturgy and welcome Peter and Alexa to our Cathedral family. This Liturgy will begin at 9 am, preceded by Orthros at 7:45 am. His Grace, Bishop ANDONIOS, the Chancellor of the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America will be the ordaining hierarch and chief celebrant of the Divine Liturgy that day. Everyone who has met Peter sees already that he is a great fit into our community and has seemingly boundless energy and enthusiasm. We are thankful to have him join our Cathedral family.

As we soldier forth through these changes as the sound, resilient community that we are, I would be remiss if I did not reflect on the many great events that we enjoyed this past October. We started out with one of my personal favorite events, the Youth Family Fall Festival. Our children, parents, and grandparents all enjoyed a great day with perfect weather to have some great food, fun and fellowship. I offer special thanks on behalf of the community to Fran Lutfy, Louis Yoestros and to all who donated their time, talent and treasure to make this event a great day of fun for our youth.

We had another great community-wide event with the wine tasting for the benefit of the Cathedral of St. Paul

Serminary Trust. It was a great night of wine and excellent food provided generously by the Mavrikis family at Jonathan’s restaurant. We will certainly be able to support many young men as they study for the priesthood with the money raised at this event.

After the Wine Tasting, we hosted a fundraiser for All Saints Greek Orthodox Monastery at our Cathedral. The sisters joined us from Calverton and shared some beautiful thoughts on the monastic life. The food was amazing and we were blessed to be joined by several local clergy including His Grace, Bishop SAVAS of Troas, our own Fr. Joakim Valasiadis (with Presvytera Bessie), Fr. Gerasimos Makris, and Fr. Louis Nicholas. The night was a great success, and the nuns are grateful for the efforts made by our community to help them.

We look forward to many more great events in the near future including our Annual Community Dance which will be held in the Cathedral Center this year. Many people ask why the dance was held off-site last year and it will be at the Cathedral this year. The reason is simple, we just had the Golden Leaves Ball at the New Hyde Park Inn where we honored Past President George Papazicos, Katherine Pamas and Kathy Boulukos. So, instead of having two functions off-site so close together, we will gather as a family at our home.

The ordination of Peter Zougras to the priesthood is another momentous event that we will share at the Cathedral of St. Paul very soon. Details for the ordination will be forthcoming in the near future

Our service to the hungry of Hempstead by our weekly Food Run and time at the Mary Brennan INN Soup Kitchen is going strong and will continue through the foreseeable future. And our GOYANs will offer service with a Christmas party through Winthrop Hospital’s Cancer Care for Kids program.

All of the aforementioned social events however, would be nothing without the Liturgical life of our church. We anticipate the beautiful services for Christmas and Epiphany which are right around the corner where we celebrate the Nativity and Baptism of our Lord, God and Savior Jesus Christ.

I pray that God blesses all of you with a healthy remainder of 2011, and I look forward to the future with all of you!

Farewell and Thank YouBy Father Andreas Vithoulkas

There is really no job description for a parish priest. As parish priests we are called not only to be administrators of the parish but also guides in the spiritual lives of our flock. Along the way we develop beautiful relationships that become life

long bonds.

I have been blessed to have had an opportunity to serve this wonderful community of the Cathedral of St. Paul for the past three years. In my time as Priest of this beautiful community, my family and I have formed lifelong friendships and bonds with so many of you. It is with my deepest love and respect that I thank Father Luke, Presvytera Marusia, Eleni, Magda, and Mia for welcoming my family; myself, Presvytera Anthoula, Niko and Petros into their family. I was especially blessed to have been able to work under a Proistamenos like Father Luke. What I cherish mostly about my relationship with Father Luke is that not only is he a great leader but also a brother and true friend in Christ’s vineyard. That’s truly priceless. May God remember his Priesthood in His Kingdom!

I would also like to thank Father Nicholas Magoulias of blessed memory and Presvytera Marilyn for embracing us. I was blessed to have met and serve with such a spiritual and grounded leader as Father Nicholas. May his memory be eternal!

I would also like to thank from the bottom of my heart, the Parish Council President and his wife James and Olga Georgakis, along with the past Parish Council presidents and their spouses. I also had the pleasure of working closely with George and Callie Papazicos and Gus and Marie Kratsios.

In addition, I would like to thank all of the Parish Council Members, the members of St. Anna’s Philoptochos, Kay Pamas and her Grief and Bereavement Group, Strati Demertzes and the Byzantine Choir of St. Paul, the Cathedral staff and a special thanks to Dimitri, Andrea Potaris and the School of Religious Education, Fran Lutfy and the Greek School of St. Paul, Peter Parras and the Boy Scouts of St. Paul and all the Organizations of St. Paul that contribute to the Godly functioning of our

Cathedral. As Youth Priest, I have seen our children grow in the Lord and would like to thank all the youth directors, advisors, coaches and volunteers for the many tireless hours that they give to the success of these programs.

Presvytera Anthoula and I are truly grateful for all of the love and kindness that we have received from the community. We feel so blessed to have been able to serve such a fine parish. We will cherish forever the treasured memories that we shared.

I would like to especially thank my wife Anthoula and my boys Niko and Petros for all of their love and support. Finally, I congratulate my successor, Peter Zougras and his wife, Alexa and wish them a fruitful ministry at the Cathedral of St. Paul. I am sure they will be received in the same embracing manner that myself and my family were. Axios! Axios! Axios!

From the Presidentby James N. Georgakis I hope this finds everyone well as we move into the fall season and all our ministries / organizations are in full swing. We have many activities taking place at our Cathedral. I know it becomes difficult to support all of them, but I encourage you to look for upcoming events through our weekly Sunday Bulletin, our bi-monthly publication, “The Epistle,” our mailings and the website. The website can be accessed by going to www.stpaulhempstead.org. Content is constantly being updated so please check it often to get the latest information.•The Mr & Mrs Club had a barbecue and volleyball welcome back on Sunday September 25th. Though this event had a light turnout, those who did attend had a wonderful time. I encourage you all to support them in the future.

• We had a wonderful day at our Family Fall festival on October 2nd. It was great to see all the families who came down to eat some Gyro or Souvlaki, have some Loukoumades and participate in the youth activities. Thank you to all the volunteers who made this such a huge success.

• On Tuesday October 11th the Seminary Trust Fund had over 80 people at Jonathan’s Restaurant for a Wine tasting reception. The night was a huge success.

• The Greek School PTA, on Friday, October 14th, had their annual Ladies Wine & Cheese Night. A variety of vendors were selling many unique items. This was a great opportunity for everyone to get together and enjoy each other’s company over wine and cheese.

• On Saturday October 15th we had our Annual Golf Outing at the Hempstead Golf and Country Club. This year’s event was well attended and included golf, tennis or dinner only.

• At the Golden Leaves Ball on Sunday October 30th we honored Past President George Papazicos, Katherine Boulukos and Katherine Pamas. The event was held at The Inn in New Hyde Park and was attended by over 180 people. Congratulations to the honorees!

• Our Annual Community Christmas Dance will be held in the Cathedral Center on Sunday December 4th. I am particularly excited about our youth programs. In our Sunday Church School program we have over 300 students registered, of these students 16 are first time students. Nursery school, ages, 2-4, has 27 students in three different classes. Our Greek School program has over 174 students enrolled. GOYA and HOPE each have over 80 children with registration expected to hit 100 in GOYA. HOPE has over 50 children and Little Angels over 50. These numbers continue to grow and our success can be attributed to Fr. Luke and Fr. Andreas as well as the many volunteers who support all of our programs. In addition we have a community that is warm and welcoming. Another reason why I believe we are the best community in the whole Archdiocese. As many of you may already be aware Fr. Andreas has been reassigned beginning in December. We will miss him Presvytera Anthoula, Niko and Petro. There will be a farewell reception on November 27th. While Fr Andreas is leaving, he will always be part of the St. Paul family. We wish him nothing but luck and success!

St. Paul’s Daughters of Penelope, Pasithea Chapter #141By Pauline Alexander

What an exciting year lays ahead for us in 2012. Some of our dates are tentative, so look to future articles for what’s in store. At our meeting in October, a new board was elected and we want to share those names with our parishioners: President, Pauline Alexander; Vice President, Katerina Englesos; Treasurer, Geri Fairfull; Corresponding Secretary, Fran Lutfy; Recording Secretary Marian Panos; Membership, Jody Delegianis.

As many of our members will attest, we had a lovely dinner for our outgoing president, Jacquie Ursini at the Trodos restaurant in Westbury. Looking back on Jacquie’s four years as president, it will be very difficult to fill her shoes. She was tireless, loyal, always enthusiastic, definitely someone you would want on your team. The word “no” was not part of her vocabulary. She will be sorely missed as president and the board will try to do as good a job as she has done.

We have been asked about the Honey Party and the membership decided to hold the party on May 9th. There are fun and exciting things coming up during the year so look for our dates in future Epistle articles for definitive dates and times. If you are interested in joining our Chapter, please contact me or one of the board members.

The Solon Society By C. Dionnysios Dionou

The Solon Society had its first meeting on the 13th of October. We were pleased to have the former editor of The Nation Herald , Andy Dabilis. The topic was timely. The presentation was a lecture on the current crisis in Greece. Mr. Dabilis did an outstanding job as he explained the problems facing the nation. Afterwards, there was a lively question and answer period.

Our next meeting will be in November. At this time we are still interviewing for a guest lecturer. The Solon Society meets, unless otherwise indicated, on the second Thursday of the month. We begin with a light buffet, coffee and tea at 7:30 PM. Lectures begin at 8:00 PM. All members of our parish are welcome to join our society.

Homebound MinistryBy Joan Prieston

On Saturday, October 8, the members of the Homebound Program attended the Divine Liturgy. Most of these individuals do not attend our religious service on Sunday because of their medical restrictions and therefore our clergy have a special Divine Liturgy just for them. All receive Communion which is so important to them.

Following, they enjoyed a luncheon in the Cathedral Center. In order for them to have an easy and safe access, our caretaker, Dimitri, built a ramp for their use.

A delicious luncheon was prepared and served to them. Chef Lou Patrickakos, with his assistants Jim Panos, Joan Prieston and Dino Zografos prepared the delicious food. A special thank you to Carol DePieto who not only set the tables, but also decorated the tables with the beautiful centerpieces of fresh fall flowers, which she made herself. At the end of all our events, it is always Carol who insists on washing all the trays and “catsaroles” as she calls them! The Homebound members enjoyed each other’s company and it was rewarding to see this. Please call the church office at 516-483-5700 for further information about our program.

LIACA By Teena Grosinski

LIACA was blessed with a perfect autumn day on October 9th for our Welcome Back Get-Together. This year, for the first time ever, it was a barbeque/picnic which took place at St. Paul’s. Tables were set up under the trees where our members, family and friends enjoyed a delicious dinner. The chefs turned out perfect sheftalia, chicken and pork. Bulgur, salad and other Cypriot favorites including rice pudding, pastries and fruit were available.

The group of musicians and singers from Hicksville who entertained us during the Lenten Dinner also attended. We sang along and had a good time listening to their music all afternoon. Two hundred people enjoyed the food and camaraderie on a beautiful fall afternoon.

Two weeks later we held our Annual Bake Sale featuring homemade Cypriot pastries, biscotti, olive bread and kolokithopites (butternut squash turnovers with bulgur) The olive bread especially has a big following. Each year we sell out of olive bread because people buy and freeze it for later use.

In November LIACA will have the Artoklasia for St. Andrew’s Day on Sunday, November 27th. We are planning and looking forward to our annual Christmas Party on Monday, December 12th.

LIACA meets the second Monday of each month at 7:30 in the Hellenic Room. Plan on joining us and making new friends. Annual dues are only $20.00.

Stewardship 2012By George Marinos

As we are moving forward in our liturgical year, it is a great time to visit the tenets and purpose of Stewardship. Here are some thoughts from the Archdiocese:

“Our theme for 2012 is Abide in Me from chapter 15 of the Gospel of John. At the Last Supper, as we read in Chapter 15 of the Gospel of John, Jesus instructed His disciples, ‘I Am the Vine; you are the branches.’ He was telling us that the purpose of our abiding in Him is that we may bear fruit for God in the world. ‘By this My Father is glorified, that you bear much fruit...’ Just as the vine bears fruit only through its branches, so Jesus has chosen to work in the world through us. We are the members of His Body. We are the branches through which the True Vine must bear fruit. We bear fruit when we serve and support God and His Church.

* * * * *

Orthodox Christian Stewardship is a way of life, which acknowledges accountability, reverence, and responsibility before God. A primary goal of Stewardship is to promote spiritual growth and strengthen faith. Becoming a Steward begins when we believe in God, to whom we give our love, loyalty and trust and act on those beliefs. As Stewards, we affirm that every aspect of our lives comes as a gift from Him. Stewardship calls on the faithful to cheerfully offer back to God a portion of the gifts with which they have been blessed.

An Orthodox Christian Steward is an active participant in the life of the Church. The parish encourages all who accept the Orthodox Faith to become practicing Stewards. Each year the Steward is expected to carefully review his or her personal circumstances and make a commitment of time, talent, and treasure to support the Parish and her

Ministries, which in turn support the National Ministries of our Archdiocese, Metropolises, and institutions.

In Oriented Leadership their book on Orthodox Christian leadership, Williams and McKibben define stewardship as the call of the faithful to share willingly the gifts that God has bestowed on them, including sharing these gifts for God’s work. Stewardship is devotion and service to God and His Church as persons, as families, as a Parish, as a Metropolis, as a National Church, and as the Church Universal. Stewardship is our active commitment to use ALL our time, talent and treasure for the benefit of humankind in grateful acknowledgement of Christ’s redeeming love.

Stewardship is caring for the needs of others. Stewardship is offering one’s self to God

as He offered Himself to us. Stewardship is what a person does after saying “I

believe...” as proof of that belief. - Williams and McKibben in Oriented Leadership”

Our Cathedral of St. Paul is blessed with many ministries whose aim is to glorify God and thank Him for the gifts bestowed on us. Please consider doing as much as you can to contribute to these blessings and help us continue on our Orthodox Christian journeys and assist those in need.

School of Religious EducationBy Joan Prieston

Our school term c o m m e n c e d on Sunday, September 25th, with a registration of 284 students and 39 teachers. As we have experienced in the past we expect additional students to register in the ensuing Sundays since some of our students have previous c o m m i t m e n t s .

As is customary, the students of the Fourth Grade were presented with their own Holy Bible on Sunday October 9th in the Cathedral by our clergy. The students are introduced to the Holy Bible in this grade and learn how to find specific passages and the valuable lessons in them. The students will use their Bible in their future grades.

The Orientation Program was held in the Hellenic Room with the teachers and their graduate assistants in their respective workshops. Primary, Intermediate and Secondary Levels. The attendees had the opportunity to exchange teaching strategies and to offer suggestions for enhancing their lessons. Following, everyone attended the lecture by Jennie Pappas who presented ten religious questions about which most people ask. There was an active question and answer period during which many interpretations were discussed. The session was so informative that several teachers planned to pursue the other interesting religious questions by purchasing the book which Jennie used, The Orthodox Church: 455 Questions and Answers by Stanley S. Harakas.

Every year in the fall, the Sunday School has its Annual Fire Drill. The purpose is to acquaint the students with the exits nearest their classrooms so that they are able to exit the building quickly and calmly. This drill is so important for the safety of our students.

Throughout the year the Youth Liturgy will be held each month in the Hellenic Room for grades first through eleventh grade. The purpose is for the students to

witness the intimacy of the Divine Liturgy and to learn its importance to all of them. The Youth Liturgy, combined with the lessons of our curriculum, enable our students to receive a complete religious education.

Our annual Communion Breakfast will be held on Saturday, November 19th, following the Divine Liturgy and we encourage all our students to attend and receive the Holy Gifts with their classmates. Some of our students go to Confession with our clergy and we hope that others will realize the importance of this Sacrament.

On November 19th and 20th, the Sunday School will hold its Holiday Boutique in the Cathedral Center. A year’s preparation by the Tuesday Ladies produces some beautiful and unique articles. Also present will be Yiayia’s Attic of interesting items, our Religious Corner, Pastry section among other areas of interest. Raffles will be sold to the community since this event enables us to defray the cost of running our program.

Every year all our students participate in the Christmas Pageant in the Cathedral, some as the characters in the play while the others as member of the background chorus by singing traditional Christmas Carols. The students will also enjoy the Christmas Party with a visit from Santa Claus.

The Sunday School extends to all a very blessed and happy holiday season.
