What state is the most desirable to retire in? There’s actually

no one answer to this because it depends on what is important to you. The newly released LPL Research Retirement Environment Index offers food for thought on the subject, however, by ranking the attractiveness of each state as a retirement destination.

The states are evaluated on six key factors to evaluate overall desirability for retirement. These factors include:

- Financial- Healthcare- Housing- Community quality of life- Employment and education- Wellness

The chart on the left reflects the scoring.

The report notes that “desirable” can mean different things to different people. A person with a very healthy financial situation, for example, may put less weight on the financial category, and give more weight to community and/or quality of life factors.

A copy of the complete report is available on our website, www.voyagefg.com, in the Resource Center under Voyage Publications.

Which is the most ‘desirable’ state to retire in?

The old adage, “We’re not getting any younger” is true. But, it’s also true that we’re also living longer.

Social Security’s latest projections report that the average 65-year-old man today is expected to live until 84.3, while the average 65-year-old woman is expected to live until 86.6. Meanwhile, 25% of 65-year-olds will live past the age of 90, while 10% will make it past 95.

Workers retiring at what Social Security considers the “full retirement age*” means the average adult will retire at either 66 or 67 years of age. Subtracting the higher age, 67, from the life expectancy years reported above, suggests men will live 17.3 years in retirement and women 19.6 years.

What is important to note is that these numbers are just averages. A man or woman who retires at 67, and is among the 25 percent of seniors who live past 90 years of age, will enjoy 25 years of retirement. And someone who stops working at 63 years of age, and lives until 93, is living in retirement for 30 years.

These, of course, are good problems to have in theory. But, it also highlights the importance of working with your Voyage financial professional to plan and execute your retirement savings thoughtfully and carefully.

Client Spotlight - Greg EstesRelishing the opportunity to sky dive againWhen you learn what Greg Estes has

been through the past seven years, it’s easy to understand why May 27, 2017 is a date that won’t soon be forgotten by the longtime Voyage Financial Group client and his family and friends.

With several family members, friends and 20 people from his church looking on at Skydive San Marcos, in Fentress, Texas, Estes sky dived for the first time since being diagnosed with cancer of the tailbone in 2010.

Estes, who turns 69 on Sept. 10, was ecstatic to be able to do something that had been a passion of his for so long prior to his health issues.

“I was going to do it by myself but we had to do a tandem jump because the winds were too high,” said Estes, who was accompanied by an instructor and three cameramen. “When I landed, I was just buzzed. I almost forgot what it feels like.”

Estes’ dive can be seen on YouTube (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=grUTMn2-jsU). The video does a great job of illustrating the entire sky diving experience – from the nervous energy prior to going up in the plane to the exhilaration of jumping at an elevation of 12,000-14,000 feet to the sheer beauty of falling through the blue sky to the relief of landing safely on the ground.

Estes first tried sky diving in the mid-1960s while enrolled at the University of Illinois. He made 20 jumps in college before joining the Marines, fighting in the Vietnam War and, after the service, having a successful business career.

Sky diving became a distant memory, though he never forgot about the thrill and remained interested in it. One day in 1993, he saw a sky diving ad and

Greg Estes during and after his return to sky diving.

thought he would try it again.

“I was hooked,” Estes said. Was he ever - from 1993 to 2010 he made 4,000 jumps.

Estes’ love of sky diving was put on hold when he was diagnosed with cancer. Things got so bad that he almost died in late 2011. But, thankfully, he has slowly recovered where he is now able to get around in a wheelchair.
