COMPANY OVERVIEW

EnerNex is an innovative electric power research, engineering and consulting fi rm providing services around the development and application of new and emerging electric power technologies to government, utilities, industry and private institutions. The fi rm, located in Tennessee’s Innovation Valley, is dedicated to engineering a cleaner, smarter energy system of the future.

EnerNex was founded in July 2003 by Jeff Lamoree, Erich Gunther, and Bob Zavadil. The company gained initial recognition in its earliest days for its involvement in the EPRI IntelliGrid Architecture development effort, along with involvement in several key studies related to the characterization of the impacts of signifi cant penetrations of wind power on power system operations. The company has since conducted groundbreaking work in areas, such as Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI), demand response, cyber security, utility automation and communication, transmission and distribution system studies and power quality. EnerNex is uniquely qualifi ed to provide Smart Grid development services. Company personnel are involved in a number of grid modernization initiatives, including GridWise Architecture Council, Utilities Telecom Council, UCAIug, Modern Grid Initiative, and the Galvin Electricity Initiative.

We have been engaged over the years with utilities, such as Southern California Edison (SCE), Consumers Energy, California Energy Commission (CEC), BC Hydro, and Entergy on high-level Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) projects. On these projects, EnerNex personnel helped to develop the requirements and use cases, as well as conduct numerous workshops. In addition, EnerNex has helped vendors in the energy products and telecommunications fi elds.

In August 2009, EnerNex was awarded a contract by the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) to sustain the accelerated development of the standards that will be required to build a secure, interoperable smart electric power grid. As the administrator for the Smart Grid Interoperability Panel (SGIP), the fi rst of its kind public-private partnership to support this effort, EnerNex team members are engaged for their industry-recognized expertise in a broad variety of Smart Grid subjects and technologies.

We have experience working with agile methodologies, performing gap and cost/benefi t analyses and prioritization of business requirements, as well as a thorough, but unbiased understanding of the latest technologies that are currently and soon to be available. In addition, we are involved in and helped establish several industry working groups such as OpenAMI, UtilityAMI, and OpenHAN. EnerNex has been recognized on several occasions for our work in AMI; these honors include the 2005/2006 Best AMR Initiative, alongside SCE and the 2007 Grid Week Award for Innovation in Grid Modernization.

Erich Gunther, Chairman and Chief Technical Offi cer, EnerNexErich W. Gunther is the Chairman, Chief Technology Offi cer, and co-founder of EnerNex where he helps

EnerNex clients defi ne their strategic direction in basic R&D, technology, and product development.

He has years of experience in design and development of innovative solutions to a wide array of power

system problems, most notably ways to take advantage of communications networks and technology

to improve the effi ciency, operating practices, and security of the electric power system. Erich was

appointed by the U.S. Department of Energy in 2004 to serve on the GridWise Architecture Council

(GWAC) – a focused team of experts assembled to articulate the guiding principles that constitute

the architecture of a future, intelligent, transactive, energy system. Mr. Gunther serves on the board of directors for Global

Smart Infrastructures, and the Utility Communications Architecture International Users group. He is a registered professional

engineer in the state of Tennessee. Presently Erich is a member at- large of the IEEE PES governing board focusing on Smart

Grid, is the chairman of the IEEE PES Intelligent Grid Coordinating Committee, and is a member of the IEEE’s Smart Grid

Task Force.

Aaron Snyder, Principal Consultant, Deputy Director of Smart Grid Labs, EnerNexAaron is a Prinicipal Consultant and Deputy Director of Smart Grid Labs. He joined the Smart Grid Engineering Team at EnerNex, but his skills and background allow him to also work with the Power Systems Engineers. He is the deputy project manager for the NIST SGIP Administrator and the technical champion for four of the seventeen SGIP priority action plans. He was recently elected to the Executive Committee of the UCA International Users Group, and chairs and participates in numerous metering standards development activities at national and international levels. He is a Senior Member of IEEE. Before joining EnerNex, Aaron held a position as a Regulatory Standards Manager for Itron, Inc. In this capacity, Aaron determined corporate strategy for electricity metering and data acquisition products based on established and pre-release market requirements, national and international regulations and domestic and international standards. He also delivered gap analysis of existing products’ performance and market and technical requirements, edited technical materials for internal and external customers and represented electricity metering products for customers at trade shows and technical conferences. Aaron has received numerous awards and scholarships. He is also

fl uent in spoken and written French, after having lived in France for more than four years.

Brad Singletary, Senior Consultant, EnerNexBrad consults for major electric utilities on Smart Grid topics including AMI, home area networking for AMI deployments and AMI security. Brad is currently focused on helping utilities and smart grid manufacturers build convergent, standards-based, home area network deployment architectures that leverage value from the utility’s AMI deployment. Brad offers utilities expertise in information security risk assessment, CIP compliance, utility security standards development, and secure systems engineering methodology. Brad brings the necessary technical experience and understanding required to rapidly deliver client architectures for the power systems domain. He brings technical supervision,

project time and dollars estimation and project execution experiences to EnerNex, as well as a deep understanding of multiple product lifecycle experiences in design and development of software and electronics fi rmware.
