Our March trip will be to CALKE ABBEY (NT), in Derbyshire. We drive straight there, and

can have a morning drink on arrival. Calke Abbey is known as “The un-stately home and

country estate”. With peeling paintwork and overgrown courtyards, Calke Abbey tells the

story of the dramatic decline of a country house estate. The house and stables are little

restored, with many abandoned areas vividly portraying a period in the 20th century when

numerous country houses did not survive to tell their story. Hot meals are served in the

restaurant from 12:00-14:30.

Saturday 25th May 2019.

Today, we will visit beautiful Llangollen in North Wales, for PLAS NEWYDD and a

CANAL BOAT RIDE over the Pontcysylite Aqueduct.

We will travel direct to Plas Newydd. The coach will be unable to access the site, so we will

be dropped at the end of their drive, about 200 yards from their café and toilets. After a

morning drink, and an introductory talk, we can tour the house and gardens. Lady Eleanor

Butler and Miss Sarah Ponsonby captured the imagination of Regency society. They

transformed an unpretentious little cottage into a Gothic fantasy of projecting stained glass

and elaborately carved oak. You can stroll through their gardens and along their riverside

walk. And you can take tea, as Wordsworth, Sir Walter Scott and the Duke of Wellington

have all done before you.

The coach will then take us into Llangollen, where we have an hour and a half to have lunch

and look around. Then it will be back on the coach for the short drive to Froncysylite where

we catch our boat. We will have a two hour cruise, where teas, coffee and cakes are available

as well as a fully stocked bar, are available on board. There are toilet facilities on board. We

will cross the famous Pontcysylite Aqueduct, before arriving back at the Wharf in Llangollen,

Where toilets are available.

gave his Killerton Estate, in the heart of Devon, to the Trust in 1944. Today, you'll find a

friendly Georgian house set in 2,600 hectares (6,400 acres) of working farmland, woods,

parkland, cottages and orchards. Hot meals are served in the restaurant

county of Leicestershire, overlooking the Vale of Belvoir. It is a Grade I listed building. A

Trust and the BBC. Arranged in two parts, the Alexander Keiller Museum is divided into the

Stables Gallery, displaying archaeological treasures from across the World Heritage Site, and

the Barn Gallery, a 17th-century threshing barn housing interactive displays and children's

activities that reveal the story of this ancient landscape.
