    excavated a 10,000 to 14,000-year-old

spear point in direct association with

mastodon bones the rst solid evidence

of the coexistence of people and the giant

    prehistoric beasts.

    Today, the 425-acre property provides

    recreational opportunities like hiking and

camping. A museum tells the natural and

cultural story of the oldest American Indian

site in the states park system. A full-size

An Amish horse and buggy is a common sight on the streets of Arthur, Ill.

Youre A Stranger Only Once In Illinois Amish CountryHorse-drawn buggies are nearly as

common as automobiles on the roads of

Central Illinois. Since 1865, when three

    Pennsylvania Mennonite families rst settled

in the area, it has become known simply as

    Amish Country.

    The communities of Arthur, Arcola,

Tuscola, and Sullivan are home to about4,500 conservative, rural Amish who

strive to be not conformed to this world.

Their presence, combined with their more

    progressive English neighbors, creates a

haven for tourism an intriguing cultural

blend of the old and new.

    Arthur

    Characterized by Amish-owned or

operated shops, Arthur is at the heart of

    Amish Country, offering markets, fairs

    and festivals. Shops sell hand-crafted

    clothes, custom cabinets, home furnishings

and unique gifts. The friendly, down-

    home atmosphere welcomes hundreds of

thousands of visitors every year and helps to

back up the town motto: Youre a strangeronly once.

Arthur also doesnt have any chain

    restaurants. Instead, locally-owned eateries

    serve lovingly prepared comfort food.

Central Illinois best known Labor Day

    celebration, the Amish Country Cheese

Festival, will celebrate its 39th anniversary

this year on Sept. 3, 4 and 5. Eat a corn

dog, sample the free cheese, take in a tractor

pull, watch a parade and listen to some

music. The Cheese Festival also includes

    the National Cheese Eating Championships

    and the International Cheese Curling

    Championships, with family and kids

divisions in each event. For details, visit

    www.ArthurCheese Festival.com.

Arthur hosts several annual festivalsand ongoing events, such as the wholesale

produce and plant auction and garage

sales. For dates, time and details, visit

    www.illinoisamishcountry.com/calendar/

    calendar.php.

    The Downtown Arthur Market offers

the latest crafts, antiques, and unique

items every third Saturday of the month.

Homemade baked goods will also be

available to purchase. The Great Pumpkin Patch is open Sept.

    15 through Oct. 31 from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.,

located at 200 N. County Road. Visitors

can pick their own pumpkins or select from

a wide variety of pumpkins, squash, and

gourds. Mums, Indian corn, straw bales

and cornstalks will also be available. Oct.

22-31 hundreds of carved pumpkins will

be displayed in downtown Arthur as part

of the traditional Lighted Pumpkin House

event at 235 S. Vine St.

The Gunny Sack Revue is a weekly

favorite, performing at the Gazebo Annex

in Downtown Arthur every Thursday at 7

p.m. Everyone is welcome to enjoy the jam

session and maybe even join in with a guitar

or banjo. On the third Saturday every September,

Arthur hosts the Bob Galloway Memorial

Bicycle Tour, where more than 600 biking

    enthusiasts descend on Illinois Amish

Countrys at and scenic terrain to ride and

eat. The tours consist of a family-friendly

10 mile loop plus 25, 50 or 100 mile loops

around the area. The tour also includes a

pancake breakfast and a full Amish Country

meal served to riders at the local Mennonite

    school.

    A barbecue competition Oct. 7 and 8

will attract more than 50 top competitive

barbecue teams from across the country.

Talk to the pros and maybe learn their

secrets. The Chet Kingery Bluegrass Jam

    will also perform that weekend.
