April 27 - May 3, 2012 South County Times 9
Spring is here and the days are getting
longer the perfect time to load up the fam-
ily and experience some of the sights Mis-
souri and Illinois have to offer just a short
drive from St. Louis.
Kimmswick
Just 25 miles south of St. Louis down
I-55, is the historic village of Kimmswick,
founded in 1850 along the mighty Missis-
sippi River. The small town features quaint
craft and specialty stores; restaurants, such
as the popular Blue Owl Restaurant; and a
variety of family-friendly events.
An annual favorite event is the Straw-
berry Festival on Sunday, June 2 and 3 with,of course, strawberries, music, arts & crafts,
carriage rides, petting zoo and more.
On June 17 treat Dad to the annual Car
Show. For more information on Kimmswick,
visit www.gokimmswick.com.
Washington
Less than an hours drive from St. Louis
on Highway 100 west from I-44 is Washing-
ton, billed as the Heart of Wine Country.
Visit the historic river town, founded in 1833,
for shopping, dining or sightseeing.
Discover Washington during its 31st An-
nual Art Fair and Winefest on May 18-20. It
will feature continuous entertainment, over
60 Missouri wines, over 40 Midwestern art-
ists and more. Hours of the wine tasting are
Friday, May 18, 5 to 10 p.m.; Saturday, May
19, noon to 10 p.m. and Sunday, May 20,
noon to 6 p.m. Admission to the art fair is
free; tickets to taste wine are $15 in advance;
$20 at the door. Visit www.downtownwash-mo.org for details.
Cuba/Steelville
Enjoy the great outdoors without spend-
ing hours on the road. Cuba and Steelville
are situated in some of the most popular rec-
reation areas in the state.
Cuba is west of St. Louis along I-44,
about halfway between Eureka and Rolla.
The Meramec River cuts a path between
Cuba and neighboring Steelville, so canoe-
ing and kayaking are a draw in spring and
summer.
Steelville is situated on three rivers: the
Meramec, the Huzzah and the Courtois.
These provide lots of fun on the water, from
shing to oating.
For area information, visit www.cubamo-
chamber.com and www.steelville.com.

Horse-drawn buggies are nearly as com-
mon as automobiles on the roads of Central
Illinois. Since 1865, when three Pennsylva-
nia Mennonite families rst settled in the
area, it has become known simply as Amish
Country.
Located north of Efngham, off In-
terstate 57, the communities of Arthur,Arcola, Tuscola and Sullivan are home to
about 4,500 conservative, rural Amish who
strive to be not conformed to this world.
Their presence, combined with their more
progressive English neighbors, creates an
intriguing cultural blend of the old and the
new. The two factions are respectful of one
anothers differences and together have cre-
ated a haven for tourism.
The Amish inuence means, among
other things, that the vibrant central shop-
ping district in downtown Arthur hasnt
been decimated by big-box retailers. The
tidy town is chock-full of Amish-owned or
operated shops selling handcrafted clothes,
custom cabinetry, home furnishings and
unique gifts.Arthur also doesnt have any chain res-
taurants. Instead, locally-owned eateries
serve lovingly prepared comfort food.
Arthur hosts several annual festivals and
ongoing events, such as the Downtown Ar-
thur Market, held the third Saturday of ev-
ery month with an array of crafts and an-
tiques. The Gunny Sack Revue, a bluegrass
jam session, is a weekly favorite on Wednes-
days at 7 p.m.
On the third Saturday of each month,
8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m., 10 to 20 crafters, some
antiques and bakers, gather in downtown
Arthur to display and sell their wares.
On Saturday, June 2, come out and enjoy
the annual Strawberry Jam Festival, which
features live music, strawberry treats of ev-ery kind, crafts, games and more.
Events are scheduled throughout the
summer, such as the Annual Moultrie-
Douglas County Fair, July 8 to 14. For acomplete schedule of activities, visit www.
illinoisamishcountry.com.
On the Saturday closest before July 4, Ar-
thur plays host to about 30,000 who come
out for the Freedom Celebration, which fea-
tures reworks, craft shows, parades, food
and more.
While Arthur is considered the heart
of Amish Country, the Amish Interpretive
Center in neighboring Arcola offers an in-
depth introduction to the Old Order life-
style. The museum has activities for young
and old, and arranges tours of Amish homes
and farms. Visitors may also stay for a fam-
ily-style meal. More information is available
at www.amishcenter.com or by calling 888-
452-6474. Most Amish-owned businessesare closed on Sundays.
For those in the market for Amish furni-
ture, Arcola has plenty of options at its vari-
ous Amish furniture dealers.Arcola is also the boyhood home of
Johnny Gruelle, the creator of Raggedy Ann
and Andy, and for being the broom corn (a
type of sorghum) capital of the world. These
distinctions are honored with annual events.
The Raggedy Ann & Andy Friendship
Gathering will be held June 1 and 2. The
weekend after Labor Day, Arcola celebrates
its heritage with the Broom Corn Festival.
For information, visit www.arcolaillinois.org.
On June 20-24, the annual Pop the
Top Festival featuring the Arcola Walldogs
Project will be in downtown Arcola. Watch
as the Walldogs mural artists transform 14
walls in Arcola. Also featured will be an art
auction, Pop the Top Beach Party, 5K race,
childrens activities and more.
Other small towns in the area offer their
own charms. Sullivan marks the west edge of
the areas Amish settlement and is the county
seat of Moultrie County. It is home to The
Little Theatre on the Square, the only Equity
theatre between Chicago and St. Louis,
which has been bringing Broadway-quality
entertainment to Central Illinois since 1957.Its summer season kicks off June 6-17 with
Grease. For details, call 217-728-7375 or
visit www.thelittletheatre.org.
The town of Monticello boasts the Mon-
ticello Railway Museum where visitors can
take a train ride and see a railway car dis-
play that includes a Pullman and post ofce
car. The museum is open Saturdays and
Sundays, May through October. In Monti-
cello, also check out Courthouse Square, the
historic districts and explore Allerton Park
and its formal gardens lled with museum-
quality sculptures and step back in time in
the 1,500 acre English estate and mansion
which now serves as a retreat center.
Drive-in movie theaters are a thing of
the past in St. Louis, but one remains alongHistoric Rte. 66 in Illinois in Litcheld. Sky
View Drive-In began operating in the spring
of 1950. It is open for the season on Friday,
Saturday and Sunday evenings. For movie
listings and times, call 217-324-4451 or visit
www.litcheldskyview.com.
Outdoor recreational activities can also
be found in Central Illinois.
Near Sullivan, about 25 miles west of I-57,
is beautiful Lake Shelbyville, an Army Corps
of Illinois lake featuring 200 miles of shore-
line, camping, boating, hiking and more.
Surrounding the nearby Kaskaskia River,
a tributary of the Mississippi, is a 20,000-
acre wildlife area that is also ideal for out-
door activities. Visit www.dnr.state.il.us for
more information.

For a relaxing weekend, visit Missouris
wine country. Take in the history of the area
or just relax at a local winery enjoying the
picturesque scenery while sipping some of the
nations nest wines.
Augusta
Missouri has long been noted for its wines as far back as the Civil War. The small town
of Augusta boasts the rst recognized wine
district in the United States. Augusta, just
30 minutes west of St. Louis, joins Deance,
Dutzow, Washington and Hermann as the
small-town gems of Missouri Wine Country,
a scenic 50-mile swath straddling the Mis-
souri River.
Wineries along the picturesque Missouri
Weinstrasse (wine road) remain top produc-
ers, garnering critical acclaim. But they also
attract tourists, who enjoy sampling locally-
manufactured vintages, touring wineries,
strolling through historic districts and brows-
ing at boutiques, antique shops and craft
fairs.
Augustas newest winery is family-ownedNoboleis Vineyards. Enjoy lunch, wine and
rolling vineyards, while listening to live music
every Saturday and Sunday through August
(www.noboleisvineyards.com).
Hermann
Like Augusta, Hermann, nestled along the
banks of the Missouri River, is also known
for its prize-winning wineries. However, the
town, established in 1837 as a German Soci-
ety settlement, is also a magnet for history lov-
ers. Over 150 buildings in and around down-
town are on the National Register of Historic
Places.
Hermann also hosts many events through-
out the year including the Wild Card Wine
Trail May 5 and 6. Food and wine pairingswith an international air at seven stops on
the Hermann Wine Trail will showcase Mis-
souris premier native grape variety. Tickets
are $30. Advance purchase required. Call
