Missouri Wine Country is a short jaunt down scenic Highway 94 amid rolling hills, beauti-ful countryside and
quaint German towns including Augusta, Defiance, Dutzow and Washington. These towns boast numerous wineries along the picturesque Missouri Weinstrasse (High-way 94) which are top producers, garner-ing critical acclaim. Tourists delight in sampling local vintages, touring wineries, strolling through historic districts and browsing the shops.
AugustaAugusta, located on the bluffs above
the Missouri River, is a scenic 35-mile drive from St. Louis. The area is home to picturesque farms, lush vineyards, breath-taking scenery, as well as antique shops, small boutiques, restaurants, unique his-toric sites and bed and breakfast inns.
Augusta also has the distinction as be-ing the first recognized wine district in the United States.
Two of the wineries along the wine trail are one of Augusta’s newest wineries, family-owned Noboleis Vineyards (www.noboleisvineyards.com), and one of its oldest, Montelle Winery (www.montelle.com).
On Sept. 20 and 21, travel the Harvest Road to the annual Harvest Festival. Cele-brate the artists, artisans, the wine and life in Augusta’s Wine Country. For a schedule of events, visit www.augusta-chamber.org.
For Christmas, 1,500 luminaries will welcome visitors to the 33nd Annual Christmas Walk on Fridays, Dec. 4 and 11, 5 to 10 p.m. Begin the season with horse-drawn carriage rides, Christmas caroling, shopping, food and more. Visit www.au-gusta-missouri.com for complete details.
DefianceSugar Creek Vineyards and Winery
(www.sugarcreekwines.com) calls the small town of Defiance home. On Satur-day and Sunday afternoons through Oc-tober, relax with a glass of wine and listen to live music.
Defiance was once home to Daniel Boone, who spent his final years in a state-ly, four-story limestone house overlooking Femme Osage Creek. Boonesfield Village, which is open to the public, features that house and over a dozen relocated and restored 19th-century buildings. For de-tails, call 636-798-2005 or visit www.linden-wood.edu/boone.
DutzowMusic also fills the air at Blumenhof
Winery on South Highway 94 on Friday evenings and Saturdays and Sundays. With its architecture and ambiance, the winery’s German heritage is evident. It is located in the historic village of Dutzow, Missouri’s oldest German settlement, which was founded in 1832. For more de-tails, visit www.blumenhof.com.
MarthasvilleFolkways and skills of the early Ger-
mans in Missouri will be brought back to life at Deutsch Country Days on Oct. 17 and 18. This German living history week-end festival will be held at the restored Luxenhaus Farm, located 2.5 miles north-east of Marthasville. Step back in time with a Civil War re-enactment, musicians, food, barn animals, demonstrations and more. For more information or advance tickets, visit www.deutschcountrydays.org.

A history lesson of early Lutherans in Missouri can be
found down Interstate 55 about 80 miles from St. Louis. There visitors will discover Perry County, to one of the oldest com-munities in the state, which includes Per-ryville, Frohna, Altenburg, Brazeau and Farrar.
In Frohna, the Saxon Lutheran Memo-rial, an outdoor history museum set in a log cabin village, highlights the pioneer-ing spirit of the early German immigrants who settled Perry County in the early 1800s. The site, listed on the National Registry of Historic Places, consists of 15 buildings, seven which are log cabins dat-ing from 1820 to 1840.
On Oct. 10, the memorial hosts a Fall Festival with demonstrations from the 1800s, crafts, German food, entertain-ment, apple-butter cooking and more.
While in Perry County, visit Perryville’s shops, wineries, then head to Willow House Bed and Breakfast. Built in 1901, the Victorian home has been historically restored and provides many of today’s ac-commodations.
