Nappy theft proves to be a rash decision

A driver was arrested after he had an accident and attempted to fl ee the scene due to not having permission to drive the company vehicle. Clerence Ndzinisa (26) appeared in the Nelspruit Magistrate’s Court on Monday on a charge of use of motor vehicle without the owner’s consent.

According to Bossies Community Justice’s (BCJ) Albert Gryvenstein, the

accident occurred on the Cairn Road on Saturday morning.

“The driver had two passengers in the bakkie and was driving towards the N4. He lost control of the vehicle when he came around a corner and went intothe bush.”

Gryvenstein said he received a call from a witness who thought the vehicle could have been stolen as he had seen the driver and the two passengers, although visibly injured, fl ee the scene.

Divergent Ops’ Jacques Meiring said they received a call from BCJ to assist on the Cairn Road. The two passengers were taken to Rob Ferreira Hospital. “His boss was called, where we established that he was using the vehicle without permission.”

Ndzinisa was arrested.

Residents’ positive attempts nipped in the bud

Thea Rix also donated a plant. Both were stolen by Monday morning.

An attempt at #GuerillaGardening was halted before it could properly get off the ground over the weekend, when two pot plants placed on the burnt-out car in Enos Mabuza Drive were promptly stolen.

Nelspruit Post’s sister publication Lowvelder reported that the car burnt out on the side of the road in the middle of December. It is still unclear what started the fi re on December 16.

Eyewitnesses said two men were seen on the scene, removing items from the car before abandoning it. Patrick Visser said when he drove past it at around 10:00, emergency services were present.

It is believed that one of the men was the driver. The vehicle has remained on the side of the road ever since.

Lynette Pearson-Daly fi rst made the suggestion on Facebook that the wreck should be turned into a beautiful

fl owerbed. It elicited a positive reaction. On Saturday Dave Walters led the

charge, placing a potted plant on the car. Thea Rix followed suit. However, by

Monday morning, on their way to work, it was plain for all the world to see that both had been removed.

“I hope the one who stole the plants will get a lot a joy from them,” Rix reacted in Afrikaans.

Another Facebook user, Ivan Cornelius,

Lowvelder editor De Wet Potgieter is an avid Nelspruit Post reader. Potgieter who has joined Lowveld Media last year, says he fi nds Nelspruit Post interesting, because its main focus is all about the community.“It consists of local news happening in Mbombela. There is always an interesting story that gets my attention.”Potgieter has been a journalist for over 30 years and is the author of Contraband – South Africa and the Illegal Trade in Ivory and Rhino Horn, Total Onslaught and The Eleventh Hour.

warned that the plants would get stolen. “And they will die in the pots,” he

added in Afrikaans. A number of people is, however, still

keen to decorate it, but it has not yet been established how best to go about it, and whether permission needs to be obtained from the car owner or City of Mbombela Local Municipality.

Jacques Meiring of Divergent Ops, however, insists that the owner needs to remove the eyesore.

He added that if the owner did not remove the car, the municipality, as the owner of the land on which it stands, was within its rights to tow it away three days after putting a notice on the car that it intended to do so. Spokesman for the municipality, Joseph Ngala, did not respond to the newspaper’s request for clarity on the applicable bylaws at the time of going to press.

Apple slows iPhones down as batteries age

The admission played into concerns that Apple was stealthily nudging iPhone users to upgrade to newer models by letting them think it was the handsets that needed replacing and not just a matter of getting new batteries.

“Our goal is to deliver the best experience for customers, which includes overall performance and prolonging the life of their devices,” an Apple spokesperson said in response to an AFP inquiry.

“Lithium-ion batteries become less capable of supplying peak current demands when in cold conditions, have a low battery charge or as they age over time, which can result in the device unexpectedly shutting down to protect its electronic components.”

Lithium-ion batteries are commonly used in mobile devices, and charging capacity

naturally wanes with use and time.Meanwhile, smartphone-operating

software is perpetually improved with updates that typically increase appetites for electricity.

Last year Apple introduced a feature to “smooth out” spikes in demand for power to prevent iPhone 6 models from shutting down due to the cold or weak batteries, according to the California-based company.

The iPhone 6 made its debut in late 2014.The feature, which slows performance

to demand less power, has been extended to iPhone 7 handsets with the latest iOS operating software and will be added to other Apple products “in the future,” the spokesperson said.

Apple releases new iPhone models annually, and sales of the handsets power its money-making engine.

People worried about performance could replace batteries, which Apple does for free for iPhones covered by warranty or for $79 if that is not the case.

Apple design of handsets makes it borderline impossible for people to change batteries themselves.

Rumors have persisted for years at tech-news websites devoted to Apple products and among fans of the company’s products that iPhone performance was being intentionally slowed, perhaps to push users to buy newer models.

The consumer electronics industry overall has routinely been accused of designing products that wear out sooner than necessary in a strategy referred to as “planned obsolescence”.

Lots of thunder, but no strike in league match

SuperSport’s Dean Furman tries to score in the second half. Hendrik Eikstein and Siyabonga Nhlapo.

Amakahosi supporters. SuperSport’s Teboho Mokoena.

George Maluleka and Dean Furman.

SuperSport’s Morgan Gould stops Willard Katsande’s efforts to attack.

Football supporters packed Mbombela Stadium of Saturday evening for the SuperSport United and Kaizer Chiefs Premier Soccer League match.

The thrilling but goalless match saw both teams walk away with a point each.

Amakhosi’s Yusuf Bunting wasted a narrow but stray shot away from the goal post in the fi rst few minutes of the match.

The shot set an electrifying atmosphere at the stadium as supporters started to cheer on.

Amatsatsantsa remained consistent with the ball possession after Bunting’s stray

shot which put pressure on the Tshwane-based team. However,

that did not stop both teams from attacking both ends. Former Chiefs players Morgan Gould and Reneilwe Letsolonyane did not shy away from their former teammates.

Willard ‘Salt’ Katsande and Reneilwe “Yeye” Letsolonyane were at loggerheads when they tackled each other in the 23rd minute of the game.

Soweto giant’s defenders Teenage Hadebe, Siyabonga Ngezana and Daniel Cardoso tackled the men in blue strikers’ ambitions to put the ball behind the post to remain nothing but a dream.

The teams were both strong and had competent players who gave the fans an exciting match. SuperSport almost escaped with three points when striker Jeremy Brockie put the ball behind the net.

Unfortunately, Brockie was shown the offside fl ag.

This was the sixth league match in a row without SuperSport registering a victory.

Amakhosi are gradually climbing up the log. They are stuck in position four with 23 points. Meanwhile, the Tshwane boys are in position 12 with 17 points.

Chiefs have been busy in the transfer market. The team recently signed Leonardo Castro from Mamelodi Sundowns, Kabelo Mahlasela from Bloemfontein Celtic, as well as Siphelele Ntshangase from Baroka FC.

All three new signings understandably failed to make the match-day squad as they only joined a few days ago.

Recently signed midfi elder Mahlasela was also expected to be thrown into the deep end, but suffered an unfortunate injury during his fi rst training session with Amakhosi on Thursday.
