Do you remember being 13? Everything begins to change. At 13, the place where you live begins to stamp an impression on your mind, your heart, your being. The sights, sounds and soul of Memphis still course through the music of Elvis Presley — who moved to Memphis at age 13.

The city where Elvis came of age gave The King of Rock ‘n’ Roll his roots.

No Memphis. No Elvis.On hot summer nights when he

pulled out his guitar on the front porch of the Lauderdale Courts apartments, Elvis couldn’t help but hear the echoes of African-Americans singing

the blues. On Sundays at church, he soaked up gospel refrains. The crackling sounds of early AM

It was March 30, 1972, when Elvis Presley joined J.D. Sumner and The Stamps, along with his TCB band and members of his entourage, to record the first footage for his new MGM documentary. The documentary was tentatively titled “Sold Out,” and then changed briefly to “Standing Room Only,” before it was became “Elvis on Tour.”

The simulated recording session captured on film that night featured Team Elvis rehearsing newly-recorded songs like “Where Do I Go From Here,” “For the Good Times,” “Always On My Mind” and many others, destined to become Elvis classics. The next evening, as filming was wrapping up for the night, Elvis, Charlie Hodge, James Burton, and J.D. Sumner and members of the Stamps, gathered around the piano for an impromptu gospel sing. The footage that was captured that night is considered by many one of the most powerful moments ever recorded of Elvis performing gospel music.

As most Elvis fans know, “Elvis on

Tour” would go on to win a Golden Globe Award and would become the thirty-third and final motion picture to star Elvis Presley before his death in 1977. Thought to be one of the most spellbinding rock documentaries ever made, the footage captured that night, along with all the amazing content the

crew shot as they followed Elvis on a 15-city tour of the United States, represents some of Elvis’ finest work and illustrates just how far he had come both vocally and as an entertainer. More than 25 performances spotlight Elvis’ talent, range

and showmanship with on-stage performances and intimate backstage rehearsals with his band. Shot with multiple cameras and presented in a split-screen format similar to “Woodstock” the movie, “Elvis on Tour” combines concert, rehearsal and backstage footage to provide all the excitement of having a front-row seat at an Elvis concert.

That was Memphis in the 1940s and 1950s - a place where blues, gospel and country music flowed together on a current as strong as the Mississippi River. And there was a deep undertow. The barriers of race and the strictures of religion were giving way to a new age. Memphis was bending, groaning, changing with the times. Elvis felt those tugs too. He ventured into Sun Records at 706 Union searching for a new sound. At first he sang like Pat Boone. Then he cut loose - just as

Memphis was doing the same.His sound, the unheard-of voice of

Elvis rocking, went first to Memphis radio, into Memphis ears, and then

was passed out from Memphis to the world in stories published by The Commercial Appeal about his rising stardom.

Elvis rocketed out of Memphis as if shot from a cannon. To the top of the pop music charts. To the “Louisiana Hayride” TV show, then Hollywood, Las Vegas and the world. Yet Elvis always held strong to his Memphis roots. Graceland, the mansion he bought in Memphis with his first million, remained his refuge and his home. Today, Memphis and Elvis live on together. To this day they share a passion, a culture that is rough, and raucous, and unique.

The undisputed King of Rock ‘n’ Roll, Elvis Presley, remains one of the most iconic and powerful forces in popular culture. “Before Elvis,” said John Lennon, “there was nothing.” After Elvis, the world looked and sounded different. With a swivel of his hips and the power of his voice, Elvis broke down barriers and shattered the status quo, revolutionizing the worlds of music, film and fashion, while signaling a seismic shift in gender, class, race, and generational relationships.

The Elvis revolution continues with “Viva ELVIS - The Album.”

The postmodern studio masterwork invokes the spirit and essence of Elvis from a contemporary perspective, while furthering the revolutionary impulses of Elvis’ sound. “Viva ELVIS - The Album” re-imagines the king’s own vocal performances in a broad variety of new musical settings. This new sound echos Elvis’ own versatility and ability to master all music genres, from Delta blues to rockabilly, from raw soul to gospel, from Southern folk to Vegas pop, while incorporating elements of garage rock, punk, urban and hip-hop.

“’Viva ELVIS - The Album’ is an amazing accomplishment, a celebration of the first and greatest rock star,” said Adam Block, Senior Vice President/General Manager, Legacy Recordings. “Viva ELVIS - The Album’ gives us a tantalizing glimpse of a 21st century Elvis, allowing us to enjoy his music in a revolutionary new way.”

“What would the songs of Elvis be like if he were doing them for the first

time today?” asks the album’s producer and arranger Erich van Tourneau, Musical Director and Arranger for Viva ELVIS by Cirque du Soleil. “We set out to evoke

the soul and spirit of Elvis Presley, while building a bridge between his music and future generations of fans.”

When working on the music for Viva ELVIS, van Tourneau, assisted by Hugo Bombardier, Assistant to the Musical Director and Arranger on “Viva ELVIS - The Album,” spent more than 3,000 hours reviewing countless albums, films, concert recordings, interviews and home recordings of Elvis. More than 17 thousand samples of Elvis’ songs – the raw material for the show – were made during

the process.Working with tens of thousands of

samples of Elvis’ voice, van Tourneau and Bombardier often wove several sequences

and sounds into the same songs, some-times changing details such as the key and tempo. In creating “Viva ELVIS - The Album,” van Tourneau was looking to accentuate and boost the emotional charge of the songs with the incorporation of ragga, punk or hip-hop elements into classic recordings. In all cases, however, the goal was to respect and understand the essence of the original recordings.

In celebration of all eras of Elvis’ musical genius, “Viva ELVIS - The Album” includes songs from Elvis’ rise to

fame in the ‘50s, his movie soundtracks, his triumphant return to the stage in the “’68 Special,” and his ground-breaking appearances in Las Vegas. “Bossa Nova,” “Burning Love,” and “Suspicious Minds” are among the songs that have been re-imagined and transformed for “Viva ELVIS - The Album.”

The first opportunity to hear a sample from this ground-breaking album will take place during Elvis Week in Memphis on Saturday, August 14, during the event “Conversations on Elvis.”

Viva ELVIS by Cirque du Soleil, a harmonious fusion of dance, acrobatics and live music, opened earlier this year in a specially designed 1800 seat theater at ARIA Resort & Casino in Las Vegas. A tribute to the life and music of Elvis Presley, Viva ELVIS focuses on the essential humanity of the one superstar whose name will forever be linked with the history of Las Vegas: Elvis Presley. Significant moments in his life – intimate, playful and grandiose – blend with timeless songs that remain as relevant today as when they first hit the top of the charts.

Viva ELVIS, the seventh resident and most recent Cirque du Soleil show pays homage to Elvis at Aria Resort and Casino in Las Vegas.

For Jennlee Shallow, a singer in Viva ELVIS, while performing in the newest acclaimed Cirque du Soleil show is a dream, the real kicker is being able to do a duet with The King of Rock ‘n’ Roll. “If someone told me five years ago I’d be singing with him, I wouldn’t have taken it seriously. It’s an honor to do that every night with him.”

Elvis Presley’s sexy, lip-curling persona made him a hit with the ladies and on the “cool” list with guys, but it was—and still is—his music that’s given him legendary status. This celebration of rhythms and vibratos, inspiring that famous pelvis to swing, is the true star of the show.

Gavin Whiteley, Digital Music Supervisor of Viva ELVIS, says Presley’s stardom came through his live performances and Viva ELVIS manages to bring that spirit back into the city the king so loved. “We are recreating the Elvis experience,” says Whiteley. “We’ve already had a lot of people who remember seeing Elvis, kissing him at a show, or being at his concerts, and they tell our artists they saw Elvis and they’re coming here to experience that again.”

The show itself begs a comparison to another fan-favorite Cirque du Soleil

show in town, The Beatles LOVE. Both shows juxtapose original artists with a stage show, but the difference in Viva ELVIS is how the music is utilized.

Viva ELVIS rocks out on stage with a live band. Just as Whiteley says, it acts like a concert and integrates its band members into set pieces and the choreography. The music of Viva ELVIS isn’t hidden off stage or limited to a sound board - it’s front and center.

Benoit Clement, drummer and bandleader for the show, praises the musical arrangements as much of it showcases what Elvis would sound like in the new millennium.

two great events where “Elvis on Tour” will be celebrated. “Conversations on Elvis – Session 1: Elvis on Tour” will be held on Saturday, August 14, at 10:00 a.m. at the Orpheum. Donnie Sumner and Bill Baize, backup singers who performed with Elvis as part of J.D. Sumner & The Stamps Quartet in “Elvis on Tour,” along with Joe Guercio, Elvis’ musical director and conductor, will share behind-the-scenes stories and memories of performing with Elvis during this pivotal time in his concert career. Hosted by Elvis fan-favorite Tom Brown, Vice President of Original Productions for Turner Classic Movies

(TCM), this event will include rarely seen video and photos from the Graceland and Warner Bros. archives.

Then, on Saturday night at 8:00 p.m., Warner Home Video and Elvis Presley Enterprises, Inc. team up to present “Elvis on Tour: 75th Anniversary Celebration,” a special in-theater experience at the Orpheum. In addition to watching the newly-restored and remastered documentary, this exclusive event will feature a specially-produced

retrospective from Priscilla Presley and additional footage from the Warner Bros. vault, never before seen by the public.

Since Elvis’ passing, Priscilla Presley has helped keep his legacy alive as an advocate for his music and as the

founder of Elvis Presley Enterprises. As someone who knew the king better than almost anyone, her introduction at the beginning of the event promises to express the depth to which Elvis touched the lives of not just those who knew him, but the whole world.

“Those of us who witnessed Elvis in concert know how incredible it was to see him performing live. Now, through this Orpheum event and DVD, millions more will get to experience that magic,” said Priscilla Presley.

newly discovered Photos at elvis lives exhibit

Uncovered this summer at Graceland in a collection of papers found in Vernon’s office were the negatives for three never-before-seen photos of Elvis. The newly-discovered photos show a 22 year old Elvis at the gates of Graceland in 1957 shortly after he purchased the mansion and the now famous gates were installed as an added security measure. The three rare photos have never been published, although a fourth photo from the same series has appeared on a limited basis in Elvis focused publications. As part of Elvis’ 75th

birthday celebration, the photos are now on display in the Elvis Lives Exhibit at Graceland through the end of Elvis Week, August 16. This is a free exhibit so be sure to stop by and check them out.

Within hours of the announcement of Elvis Presley’s death on August 16, 1977, at age 42, thousands of fans crowded the gate area in front of Graceland Mansion in an expression of grief, shock, disbelief and love. Thousands upon thousands of people all over the world felt as though they had suddenly lost a close friend or member of the family. Such was the relationship Elvis had with his audience.

On the first anniversary of Elvis’ passing, a number of fans gathered out-side the gates with candles and spent an evening talking and reminiscing. The next year there were more. The Austin-based Elvis Country Fan Club organized an opening ceremony. Each year, more and more fans came to Memphis that week for the candlelight tribute and various other activities started getting organized. When Graceland opened for public tours in the summer of 1982, fans suggested to the management that the gates be open during their candlelight tribute, allowing them to walk single-file up the driveway to Elvis’ gravesite and back down. The management agreed.

Responding further to the growing influx of fans in August, Graceland/Elvis Presley Enterprises, Inc. (EPE) took the lead in organizing Elvis Week, which has grown in its diversity of events.

The solemn and beautiful Candle-light Vigil continues to be the climactic event of Elvis Week, which otherwise is a high-energy mix of music, dance, sports, social and charitable events pre-sented by Graceland/EPE, Elvis fan clubs and many other participating or-ganizations. It all happens in an atmo-sphere of international, multigenera-tional, multi-cultural friendship and camaraderie. Elvis Week as a whole, and the Candlelight Vigil in particular, have become a cultural phenomenon known all over the world.

Q. When does the Candlelight Vigil begin? How does it work? The opening ceremony takes place at 8:30 p.m. on August 15, near the front gates of the mansion property. Fans gather in the street and in Graceland Plaza to see this. There is a queue line in the street. At the end of the ceremony, torches lit from the eternal flame at Elvis’ grave are brought down to the gate. The queue line starts to move as fans walk through gates and light their candles on the torches and then walk single file up the driveway to the gravesite in the Meditation Garden and back down. To accommodate everyone who is in line, the procession lasts

into the morning of August 16, the anniversary of Elvis’ passing. Graceland staff members are positioned all along the way to offer assistance. Near the front gate, Elvis fan club leaders from all over the world work in shifts to offer further assistance. Although candle lighting for the procession is from the torches, please be prepared to light your candle when asked to do so for our traditional “sea of candles” shot for the world news media at the start of the opening ceremony.

Q. What about parking? Around 6:00 p.m. on the evening of August 15, the Memphis Police will begin the process of closing traffic on Elvis Presley Boulevard from Bluebird Street to Craft Road. It should be completely closed to through traffic by 6:30 p.m. Security-patrolled parking for the vigil will be available FREE of charge beginning at 6:00 p.m. in the regular Graceland visitor parking facility.

Vehicles will be allowed to pass through the police barricades to come and go from the parking area all evening.

Q. Any tips for my physical comfort? It is August in Memphis. That usually means heat and humidity. Please take precautions. Any health problems are sure to be aggravated by the climate, the crowding of people, and the long periods of standing. Many fans have learned to avoid the discomfort of being in a tight crowd for so long by first gathering with everyone on the street for the opening ceremony, then moving back to a comfortable spot in the plaza, enjoying a gorgeous view of the procession from there, then joining the queue line some time later after the crowd has thinned out. Restrooms are not available on the mansion grounds during the vigil. Restrooms are available in the ticket pavilion, the restaurants, and other Graceland Plaza buildings.

Q. What if I forgot to bring a candle? Graceland provides free candles to those who arrive at the vigil without their own. These may be obtained at the guest services desk in the ticket pavilion during the afternoon or early evening of August 15 or at the barricaded area at the front gate anytime during the vigil.

Q. Any special rules or guidelines? Consideration - Please be considerate of others and do not hold up the movement or flow of the procession by lingering at the grave site, stepping out of line to remain in the garden, bunching up into groups, etc. The idea is to have a continuous single-file flow. Remember that however long you might have waited, there are many more

behind you who have waited longer. Please keep moving.

Lingering - If you would like to spend more time in the Meditation Garden during Elvis Week, please see the event listings for the schedule of free walk up visit availability in the mornings and several evenings of Elvis Week. You may linger in the Meditation Garden at those times or when you are on the regular Graceland tour.

Security - As a security precaution, no bags (including camera bags, backpacks, shopping bags, briefcases or luggage items) will be allowed on the mansion property. Any bags or packages that you have should be returned to your car or your lodging before entering the queue line for the vigil. No one will be allowed through the mansion gates with any of these items. Any other items carried onto the property are subject to search.

Cameras/AV - Still cameras with or without flash may be used on the mansion grounds; however, camera tripods, video equipment, movie cameras, tape recorders, music-playing devices and radios are strictly prohibited.

No Food or Drinks - Food items, drink cans, and glass containers are prohibited on the mansion grounds. The Graceland/EPE staff provides water at stations at the front gate and mid-way up the mansion driveway.

Smoking - Smoking is not allowed anywhere on the Graceland Mansion property. In the interest of the health and comfort of others, smokers on the street and on the plaza property are encouraged to find open, non-crowded areas to smoke.

Behavior - Boisterous or otherwise disruptive behavior and loud noise are prohibited on the mansion grounds. Those who insist upon violating the rules or behaving inappropriately will be escorted from the mansion or plaza property. Graceland Security and the Memphis Police will deal with those issues if any arise.

Q. What if I brought flowers or a memorial? You are welcome to bring single flowers, small bouquets or other small remembrances to place at the grave site as you walk by in the procession or when you tour Graceland or when you enjoy the free walkup visiting times. Larger floral arrangements or memorial displays may be taken to the front gate guard house any time and Graceland staff will take care of placement.

Q. What if I need medical help? First aid will be available along the

procession and queue line as needed by contacting any Graceland/EPE staff member or a police officer for assistance. Outside the mansion grounds there will be two special first aid locations. One will be in the specially marked area in front of the mansion gates. The other will be located directly across the street from the gate. An EMT will be available to assist with special needs and emergencies. Graceland employees and the Memphis Police will be available throughout the area.

Q. What about access for persons with disabilities? Graceland has wheelchairs available for emergency use only. Those who have their own wheelchairs or need information about access arrangements for persons with disabilities may inquire at the Guest Services desk inside the ticket office pavilion in the plaza.

Q. What’s up with all these reporters? The Candlelight Vigil attracts extensive media attention from around the world each year. Television crews, photographers and journalists will be allowed access to the vigil on a restricted basis. Most of their activity usually takes place during the first couple of hours. Media are asked to take care of their business in a quiet, respectful, expedient fashion. The media will be allowed to videotape and photograph in a specific area at the edge of the garden and they will be allowed to invite people to step away from the line on the driveway for interviews. They may also interview people on the street or in the plaza. If you find any media representative behaving improperly, please notify the nearest Graceland employee, who will either correct the problem or summon a manager to do so. Please be mindful that the media have their job to do and their coverage of this and other Elvis Week activities is important to the perpetuation of the Elvis legacy. Also, for each one of you who gets to be here for Elvis Week, there are thousands more who wish they could be here to participate. Access to media coverage is their way of sharing the week with you.

Graceland Christmas Lighting Ceremony: November 19, 2010, 6:00 p.m. Graceland officially begins the holiday season with the annual lighting of the lights and decorations on the Graceland mansion and plaza property. After a countdown by everyone in attendance, the ceremonial switch is flipped and Graceland’s holiday splendor comes alive for another season. The lighting ceremony is open to the public to attend and Santa will also be available for pictures with the kids throughout the evening’s festivities.

Christmas at Graceland: November 19 - January 9, 2011 During the holiday season, the tour of Graceland is extra special with the interior and exterior of the mansion decorated for the holidays. On the grounds of Graceland, see traditional lights and decorations, including hundreds of blue lights along the driveway, a life-size Nativity scene, Santa and his sleigh and much more originally displayed by Elvis. The interiors of Graceland mansion will also be decked in Elvis’ Christmas décor for the holiday season and will include his traditional red velvet drapes and Presley family Christmas artifacts on display throughout the Graceland mansion tour including the Jungle Room.

Elvis Birthday Celebration 2011: January 6 - January 9, 2011 Celebrate Elvis’ birthday in Memphis with four-days of special events and fun, including the Fan Club Presidents’ Event, Elvis Insiders Reception and Tour, dances, social events and more. March 4, 2010Los Angeles-based hair metal band, Rock Sugar, visited Graceland after performing at the Beale Street Music Festival. The members of the band are avid Elvis fans, and they wanted to stop by Graceland to visit what they deemed the “mecca of Rock ‘n’ Roll.”

March 8, 2010Over 600 Boy and Girl Scouts visited Graceland for Scout Day on Saturday, March 6, 2010, where they took a tour of the mansion and participated in activities like arts and crafts, Elvis karaoke and learning how to be an Elvis DJ.

March 22, 2010Elvis lives...in Poland! Anna in Memphis received this photo from her friend who visited Wroclaw, Poland. Depending on the Polish translation, the bumper sticker reads “Elvis Lives” or “Elvis let the good times roll.”

June 25, 2010Graceland went red, white and blue to support the U.S. National Soccer Team during the World Cup competition. The lights were switched on by Memphis area youth, ranging from ages 8 to 12 years old, who play in the Mid South Futbol Club.

March 1, 2010The yearlong celebration of Elvis Presley’s 75th Birthday continues today with the grand opening of “Elvis Presley: Fashion King,” at Graceland. The exhibit is the first of its kind at Elvis’ home in Memphis, and explores fashion trends ushered in by The King of Rock ‘n’ Roll. Be sure to check out the Elvis Presley: Fashion King exhibit at Graceland Crossing while in Memphis for Elvis Week.

April 12, 2010Interior designer Bill Eubanks, who consulted on the redesign and decoration of the TV and pool rooms in 1974, recently visited Graceland. Bill was the man behind the TCB-inspired paint scheme, multiple inset televisions and fully-mirrored ceiling and bar in the TV room, as well as lining the walls and ceiling of the pool room with over-400-yards of pleated fabric.

March 25, 2010This display case represents just a small portion of the Elvis artifacts on display at the new Elvis! His Groundbreaking, Hip-Shaking, Newsmaking Story exhibit that recently opened at the Newseum in Washington, D.C. At the opening, fans and student groups celebrated by touring the exhibit and enjoying Elvis music by Memphian Andy Childs.

March 16, 2010Elvis really is everywhere! Elvis Insider Linda received an email from her friend in Shenzhen, Guangdong, China, that included this photo of an Elvis billboard. In Chinese, the headline reads “Elvis Changed Music.”

Start at the John Deere Pavilion in downtown Moline where you can see vintage and modern equipment and try out our interactive exhibits. Go next door and you’ll see clothing, toys, and other merchandise with our famous leaping-deer logo on sale at the John Deere Store.

Trek a few miles to the southeast to visit Deere & Company World Headquarters, an architectural gem overlooking the Rock River Valley. There’s a big display area where you can view a world-famous mural and John Deere machines. Come any day, 9 a.m.-5 p.m., no reservations required.

For company history, you can take I-88 northeast, following the Rock River upstream for about an hour, to visit John Deere’s original blacksmith shop in Grand Detour, near Dixon, Illinois. It’s where he built his blacksmith shop and forged his famous steel-bottom plow, which helped open the West to development. We call it the John Deere Historic Site, and it’s also an archeological site. Check out the exhibits and the Deere family homestead. It’s open Sundays 9 a.m.-5 p.m. from May to October. Group tours are available in winter months: Call 815/652-4551.

Cross the street and you’re at the Butterworth Center, home of Deere & Company’s third president, William Butterworth. Go inside to absorb family history and Italian-renaissance elegance. If you follow the Mississippi River a few miles east you’ll find Riverside Cemetery perched on a bluff overlooking the river valley. Turn left after you enter and wind your way to its crest. There you’ll find the final resting places of John Deere and many of his descendants, including all the men who headed our company for its first 118 years (1837–1955). You can visit anytime during daylight hours.

John Deere built his plow factory in Moline, Illinois, because the town had everything he needed: steamboats to bring in raw materials, roads, water power from the Mississippi River, and hard-working pioneer families for a ready source of labor. The original factory is long gone. There’s a hotel, civic center and restaurants there now, but John Deere’s legacy lives on at places you can visit in and around the Quad Cities.

Humes High School: Go left out of the Graceland parking lot through three lights to 55 North. Stay in the middle lane to 240 North. Take the Jackson Ave. West exit. Humes is on the corner of Manassas and Jackson.

The MED and Elvis Presley Memorial Trauma Center: Go left out of the Graceland parking lot through three lights to 55 North. Follow 55 North to Riverside Dr. Go right on Jefferson. The MED will be on the right side about one mile after turn.

The Orpheum Theatre: Go left out of the Graceland parking lot through three lights to 55 North. Get in the left lane and follow 55 North to Riverside Dr. Follow Riverside Dr. to Beale St. and take a right. Go to Main St., take a right and the Orpheum is on your immediate right.

Memphis Rock ‘n’ Soul Museum: Go left out of the Graceland parking lot through three lights to 55 North. Get in the left lane and follow 55 North to Riverside Dr. Follow Riverside Dr. to Beale St., which will be approximately 1 mile on the right. Turn right onto Beale Street. Follow Beale Street until you see the FedEx Forum on your right hand side. The museum is located inside the Forum.

Memphis Zoo: Go left out of the Graceland parking lot through three lights to 55 North. Get in the middle lane to 240 North. Take 240 North to Union Ave. Take the Union East exit. Go Union to Tucker St. and turn left on Tucker. Tucker will take you to the entrance of the Zoo.

Strike Zone Bowling Alley: Go right out of the Graceland parking lot and continue south on Elvis Presley Boulevard to Stateline Road. Turn left on Stateline Road. Go about 4 miles to Getwell Road and turn right. Drive south past Goodman Road and turn left on May Blvd. (large sign for Snowden Grove Park at entrance). Continue to stop sign and turn left. Strike Zone bowling alley will be on the right.

Sun Studio: Go left out of the Graceland parking lot through three lights. Take 55 North to 240 North. Follow 240 North and take the Union Ave. West exit. Continue about one mile. Sun Studio is on the right.

Tunica: Go right out of the Graceland parking lot to Shelby Dr. Turn right onto Shelby Dr. Follow Shelby Dr. to Highway 61 (3rd St.). Turn left onto Highway 61. Follow Highway 61 and casino signs will be posted to direct you to various casinos.
