Ed gave a very powerful speech onPolioPlus, reminding us all that polioeradication is Rotary's number onehumanitarian goal. Rotary has committed$200 million to match the Bill and MelindaGates Foundation donation of $355 millionfor the final steps in wiping out polio. Lastyear Ed spend 14 days in Nigeria on aNational Immunization Day (NID) trip. Itinvolved 15,000 volunteers and 1639separate teams. UNICEF provided thevaccines. WHO provided all the laboratoryservices. WHO can track emerging poliocases down to the neighborhood withmodern genetic coding.The polio vaccine must be kept cold theentire time so the NID logistics included 100distribution centers with ice and supplies. Ineach village, the health team would meetwith the chief who would vouch for the teamand the immunizations would begin.

NIDs must be held in pairs, a month apart,and repeated every year for 4-5 years to wipeout polio in a region or country.
For every child affected with polio there are200 carriers of the polio virus who show nosymptoms.

Norm has $5 happy bucks for African-American month celebrated in February andfor the great articles in the RotarianMagazine. On page 52, the principal in theBrown vs. Board of Education Topeka,Kansas, was remembered. On Rotary's 105th
birthday, World Understanding was the causecelebre, and on page 59, the focus was onpeace. Norm noted it was a remarkableissue.

Aiken Sunrise pledges $20 on each Rotarian’s Birthd ay
For the next three years, the Rotary Club of Aiken Sunrise is asking eachmember to donate $20 to the PolioPlus campaign to help match the Billand Melinda Gates Foundation grant to eradicate polio.
