Technology is advancing at a faster rate than the human brain can handle. As humans we are facing an onslaught of marketing messages with recent estimates that we are exposed to more than 600-650 marketing messages a day (Media Matters 2007) . How does this impact how you exhibit?

We decided to look at how the music industry has changed in the face of technology. We picked three different artists from different generations and looked at how marketing has changed. Check it out….

Learning from the music business…

Between 1950 and 1977, Elvis Presley changed his proposition to the market three times – once for every decade. In the 50s he was a clean cut break out star. In the 60s he was the movie star and in the 70s he was rocking the jumpsuits, kung fu kicks and the sunglasses. Even though it ended tragically, we loved Vegas Elvis.

Madonna

It is estimated that Madonna is worth more than $500 million with a career stretching four decades. Madonna reinvents her image for every new album and tour. It has proven to get her attention and coverage upon announcement and is the reason she was the best selling artist in the 2000s.

Lady Gaga

Whether you like her music or not (we don’t) there is no denying that Lady Gaga heads up a new wave of musical artists. Fighting against a tide of technology and attention, Lady Gaga has to push out new image for every single and appearance. Artists like Gaga need to create noise to stay relevant.
