El programa de interambio de estudiantes necesita hogares de familias para el año escolar 2011/2012 en los condados, Osceola, Orange, Seminole y Polk. Los estudiantes de intercambio que necesitan una familia estan entre las edades de 15-18 años y vienen de diferentes países de todo el mundo. Ellos estan muy emocionados de venir por un año a los Estados Unidos, especialmente a la Florida como un ‘Chico o chica Americano-a’. The exchange student program needs host families for the 2011/2012 school year in the counties of Osceola, Orange, Seminole, and Polk. The Exchange Students that need host families are all between 15-18 years of age and come from many different countries around the world. They are very excited to spend a year in the United States, especially Florida, as an “American Kid.” This is a great opportunity for our community to learn about other cultures around the world while sharing our culture with these students. Host families provide the students with a bed of their own, but they can share a room with a sibling of the same gender within a five year age difference and meals away from school. The students bring their own money for all other items such as toiletries, school lunch, school uniforms, activities, school supplies, etc. These students are also covered by emergency medical insurance while they are here. Un 75 por ciento de los clientes que respondieron a la encuesta prefieren alguna forma de reciclaje; 55 por ciento eligió un día de recogida de desecho y un día de recogida de material reciclable.Luego de recibir los resultados

de la encuesta, el personal de Servicios Públicos de la Ciudad de St. Cloud le presentó para aprobación al concilio un propuesto plan de reciclaje basado en los resultados. El personal le explicó al concilio que un día de recogida de material reciclable no incluiría un aumento en equipo ni trabajo porque la Ciudad estaría intercambiando un día de recogida de desecho sólido por un día de recogida de material reciclable. St. Cloud, FL – The St. Cloud City Council passed Resolution No. 2011-069R (4-1 vote) May 12 during a regular council meeting at City Hall to move forward on the implementation of the city’s recycling program. The City Council voted to begin citywide collection of recyclable materials on a weekly basis tentatively starting October 1. This will make St. Cloud the first in Osceola County to offer a curbside recycling program.Customers will not see an

increase in fees, but will see a change in collections - customers will have one-day per week garbage, one-day per week yard waste, and one-day per week recyclables collections. City staff was directed by City Council to establish and maintain a Solid Waste Collection/Transfer Station Administrative Policy Manual to administer collection standards and billing procedures for the adjustment of fees consistent with the intent established by Resolution No. 2011-069R.

The City of St. Cloud Public Services staff conducted a customer survey in October 2010 to measure the interest in several curbside recycling pickup options. More than 3000 customers completed and submitted the survey. The three options on the survey were: Add household curbside

recycling material pickup service one day per week and continue to collect trash two days a week, adding $2 to the current monthly costAdd household curbside

overwhelmingly preferred adding curbside recycling material pickup service one day per week and reducing garbage collection to a single day per week for the current monthly cost. Seventy-five percent of the customers responding to the survey preferred some form of recycling; 55 percent elected one-day pickup of solid waste and one-day recyclable material pickup. After the survey results were

in, the City of St. Cloud Public Services staff presented to City Council for approval a proposed recycling plan based on the results. Staff explained to City Council that one-day pickup of recyclables would not include an increase in equipment or labor because the City would be trading one day of solid waste pickup for one day of recycling material pickup. St. Cloud, FL – The St. Cloud Police Department held a graduation ceremony May 2 at police headquarters for the 13 students who completed the 2011 Citizens Police Academy. Students were instructed

on the inner-workings of their police department while participating in different police-related activities. They learned about patrol, traffic enforcement and felony stops, criminal investigations, communications and dispatch, crime scene investigation and techniques, police training, and entry team. “The purpose of the Citizens

Police Academy is to provide our citizens with the opportunity to learn first-hand how their police department works to better serve their community,” said Chief of

Police Pete Gauntlett. “The graduates walk away with a better understanding of the department. This helps all of us to develop a partnership through education and this makes for a better community any way you look at it. We congratulate our graduates for their dedication to the class and to their community.” The 12-week course normally

begins in January every year. The course requires students to meet every Monday night, from 6-9 p.m., and students must be able to commit to attending all classes to receive the Certificate of Completion at graduation. This will be an opportunity for the parents of the students as well as the community to visit each floor and observe the variety of student artwork. Condado Osceola, FL - Los detectives del Sheriff del Condado Osceola necesitan la ayuda del público para identificar al sospechoso del robo de un banco. El 18 de mayo, aproximadamente a las 4:04 p.m., los agentes del Sheriff del Condado Osceola respondieron al BB&T Bank localizado en el 2710 N. Orange Avenue Blossom Trail en Kissimmee. A su llegada, los agentes hablaron con los empleados del banco quienes indicaron que un hombre desconocido entró al banco, dio a entender que tenía un arma y exigió dinero. Este abandonó

el banco con una cantidad de dinero no revelada. Los agentes con la ayuda de las unidades de aviación y canina, revisaron el área pero no pudieron localizar al sospechoso. Nadie fue herido durante el incidente.

El sospechoso es descrito como un hombre blanco cerca de los treinta, de aproximadamente 5’7”, pesando 165 lbs. Detectives investigan robo al Banco BB&T Osceola County, FL -- Osceola County Sheriff’s detectives need the public’s help in identifying a bank robbery suspect. On May 18, at approximately 4:04 p.m., Osceola County Sheriff’s deputies responded to the BB&T Bank located at 2710 N. Orange Avenue Blossom Trail in Kissimmee. Upon arrival, deputies spoke with the bank employees who indicated an unknown male entered the bank, implied he had a weapon and demanded money. He left the bank with an undisclosed amount of money. Deputies with the assistance of Aviation

and the K-9 Unit, searched the area but were unable to locate the suspect. No one was injured during the incident.The suspect is described

as a white male in his late 20’s, approximately 5’7”, weighing 165 lbs. Anyone with information is asked to call the Osceola County Sheriff’s Office at (407) 348-2222 or Crimeline at (800) 423-TIPS (8477). Calls made to Crimeline remain anonymous, and tips that lead to the felony arrest of suspects and/or the recovery of stolen property and drugs are eligible for cash rewards of up to $1,000 dollars.

Cuando reporte el incidente, provea a la policía la siguiente información: confirmación de que su familiar esta seguro, las exigencias especificas hechas por la persona que llamó, sexo y acento del interlocutor, fecha, hora y lugar que la persona escogió para que fuera pagada la recompensa y cualquier otra

información que pueda ser útil para localizar a la persona que llamó. A cualquiera que tenga información se le pide llamar a la Oficina del Sheriff del Condado Osceola a l (407) 348-2222 o a la Línea del Crimen al (800) 423-TIPS (8477). Osceola County, FL -- Osceola County Sheriff’s deputies are cautioning the public regarding a kidnapping scam. Since May 14, the Sheriff’s Office has taken eight reports from individuals who received a call in Spanish, informing them a family member had been held against their will, and demanding the family send money to an undisclosed bank account in Puerto Rico. In five of the eight cases from the weekend, the caller stated their family member was in a car accident and injured. The caller threatened to further

harm the family member if money was not sent immediately. Two of the calls claimed the caller had kidnapped a family member and demanded money. All of the calls had similar phone numbers and all demanded money be sent to Puerto Rico. In the latest case the victim sent $700.If you receive a similar call, remain

calm and contact your family member immediately. If you are unable to contact your family member, call law

enforcement immediately. Deputies also encourage the public to attempt to verify the authenticity of the caller’s claim by asking questions to verify the identity of the kidnapped victim. Even if you have confirmed your family member is safe, report the incident to law enforcement. When you report the incident, provide law enforcement with the following: confirmation your family member is safe, specific demands made by the caller, gender and accent of the caller, date, time and place the caller arranged for

the ransom to be paid and any other information that will be helpful in locating the caller. Anyone with information is asked to

call the Osceola County Sheriff’s Office at (407) 348-2222 or Crimeline at (800) 423-TIPS (8477). Calls made to Crimeline remain anonymous, and tips that lead to the felony arrest of suspects and/or the recovery of stolen property and drugs are eligible for cash rewards of up to $1,000 dollars.

Deputies caution public about Kidnapping Scam

Condado Osceola, FL - El 12 de mayo, los agentes del sheriff del Condado Osceola arrestaron a tres sospechosos envueltos en una invasión a un hogar para robar. El 11 de mayo, aproximadamente a las 11:31 p.m., los agentes del Sheriff del Condado Oscela respondieron al 2744 Sample Street de Kissimmee. Osceola County Sheriff’s deputies arrested three suspects involved in a home invasion robbery. On May 11 at approximately 11:31 p.m., Osceola County Sheriff’s deputies responded to 2744 Sample Street in Kissimmee. Upon arrival, deputies spoke with the victim who indicated she was sitting on her front porch when three black males, identified as Auburn Edwards, Lawrence Anthony Barlow and Richard Chappell, wearing black clothing and masks, pushed her into her house at gunpoint. They forced the victim, her husband and three other victims who were in the residence to get on the floor in the living room. The suspects took electronic items and told the victims they were going to take their cell phones and cut the phone lines before leaving the residence.The suspects returned to the residence

because they inadvertently left their car keys in the residence, but they could not gain entry because the victims locked the door. As they were fleeing the area on foot, they were observed by several witnesses who were able to provide deputies a detailed description. Detectives identified the owner of the locked truck as Ryan Lundsford and located him at the intersection of Old

Dixie Highway and Garden Street. Lundsford told deputies he loaned the truck to Richard Chappell. Detectives located a friend of Chappell’s who told them she rented two rooms for Chappell at Motel 6 located at 5731 W. Irlo Bronson Memorial Highway in Kissimmee. Detectives recovered the victims’ stolen property and three guns at the motel. Chappell was located at the Walmart on West 192. He was charged with Armed Robbery Home Invasion, Armed Occupied Burglary, Wearing a Mask During a Robbery, Aggravated Assault with a Deadly Weapon, False Imprisonment, Grand Theft, Battery and Possession of a Firearm During the Commission of a Felony. Edwards and Barlow were arrested at the motel and charged with Armed Robbery Home Invasion, Armed Occupied Burglary, Wearing a Mask During a Robbery, Aggravated Assault with a Deadly Weapon, False Imprisonment, Grand Theft, Battery and Possession of a Firearm During the Commission of a Felony. Recordando / Remembering

Es con profundo dolor que le informamos a nuestros lectores de la gran pérdida, el pasado 15 de mayo, para la comunidad latina, en especial para los amantes de la música, del Sr. Rafael Fernando Torrealba, original de Venezuela, conocido por ser el fundador y director del Grupo Kompas. Su compromiso con

la comunidad lo llevó a amenizar un sin número de eventos que incluyeron en el Condado de Osceola Viva Osceola, Gala Osceola, Día de Reyes en Osceola, y otros eventos del Concilio Hispano de Negocios de la Cámara de Comercio de Kissimmee/Osceola. Siempre trató de ayudar

en las actividades, inclusive en ocasiones en las que no se contaba con suficientes fondos. Rafael, estaba dispuesto a ajustarse al presupuesto para traer su música y alegrar el evento. El Grupo Kompas

es una agrupación musical cuyo propósito es difundir la Música Popular

L a t i n o a m e r i c a n a cualquiera que sea su origen, dentro de las fronteras de los Estados Unidos y a nivel mundial.La agrupación, nace

el 19 de Diciembre del año 2001, conformada por integrantes Venezolanos Pioneros del movimiento Gaitero en la Florida Central, fundadores de la Primera agrupación gaitera en Orlando también dirigida por

Rafael Torrealba y que tuvo por nombre “Con Ton y Son”. Cuya duración como grupo musical fue muy corta y al desintegrarse, da inicio a los pocos días a Grupo Kompás. Después de varias

presentaciones en Orlando y Kissimmee, Kompás vuelve invitado a Tampa para abrir espectáculo al famoso Humorista Venezolano “El Conde

Del Guácharo”. Luego Kompás modifica su repertorio, incorporando ritmos populares Latinoamericanos como Merengue, Salsa y Cumbia. El grupo se enriquece con nuevos miembros de otras nacionalidades. La agrupación ha

compartido escenario con la Orquesta “La más Popular de Venezuela” la Billo’s Caracas Boys, en el Hotel Hyatt de Orlando y con Puerto Rican Power, en “Calle Orange”. También ha participado

en la Fiesta San Juan de Wet’n Wild, Festival de Independencia de Venezuela, Festival Independencia de Colombia, “Calle Orange y muchos más. El grupo Kompás tiene

más de 9 años en el mundo de la música, con más múltiples presentaciones en Orlando, Miami, Tampa y Atlanta.Cientos de amigos

junto con familiares acudieron a los servicios funerales que se llevaron a cabo el martes 17 de mayo en la Funeraria San Juan en Kissimmee.

discovered similar traits in our husbands of late. There’s a general grumpiness and lack of grooming. We’ve been told that, as men age, their frontal lobes begin to shrink, and that this is the area of the brain which governs these qualities. Is this true? Are there remedies?Researchers at Henry Ford Health System in Detroit

have discovered evidence suggesting the male brain shrinks faster with age than the female brain. “We found that age-related shrinkage was greater for men in three regions of the brain that are involved in thinking, planning and memory,” said Dr. C. Edward Coffey, the study’s principal investigator. There was evidence of greater shrinkage around

the frontal (front) and temporal (middle) lobes of men. “We have known for a while that men tend to be more prone to age-related brain disorders such as memory loss and Alzheimer’s disease. These findings may help provide an explanation for these sex differences,” Dr. Coffey said.“We are currently investigating the potential

functional differences that might result from the acceleration of age-related brain shrinkage in men.”Do men become grumpy and slovenly because of

shrunken lobes? The jury is out on that question.
