1 heap and flexible forms of work is the “favourite” practice of employers, as it ensures additional profits by reducing labour costs. One of the worst forms of exploitation, is that of students from third countries who arrive in Cyprus misled that they will find “heavenly conditions” and end up work- ing ten or twelve hours per day for very low wag- es. This problem resurfaced these days, due to the permission given to 800 students from Bangladesh to enter Cyprus, by the Minister of Interior Mr Socra- tes Hasikos, despite the warnings of the Immigration Unit of the police, that these students presented fake documents and thus were registered in the Alert List and the disagreements of the Ministry of Foreign Af- fairs and the Ministry of Education. Based on the recent memo of the Commissioner for Administration (Ombudsman) submitted to the Parliament during the discussion of the matter, from Cyprus “substantive and procedural guarantees are absent to prevent the risk of misinformation and ex- ploitation of students from third countries”. Additionally, the Commissioner notes “an inflexi- ble and unfair treatment of these students ... that leads them to quit their studies and consequently be deported from the country”. Based on the memo, the checks made by Private Institu- tions of Higher Education are “random” and “non on a regular basis”, and the legislation implementation on the subject is deficient. The Commissioner stressed that, specific ac- tions or behaviours, are actually characteris- tics of “recruitment”, which lead to forms of trafficking. The Authority Against Discrim- ination has drafted a detailed report, according to which there is lack of official and uniform source of information for third-country nationals who wish to study in Cyprus, but only scattered information on the websites of various services. Basically, the students from third countries primarily come in con- tact with the “agents” of private Colleges and Universities and not any state au- thority. This is an elaborated plot in which private Colleges in collaboration with their agents attract foreign students, by traveling to third countries and presenting misleading and false information to at- tract new “customers”. This is an ongoing situation which authorities con- stantly neglect to address. The exploitation of stu- dents is covered up with the blessings of the eco- nomic establishment. heap and flexible forms of work is the “favourite” practice of employers, as it ensures additional profits by reducing labour costs. One of the worst forms of exploitation, is that of students from

third countries who arrive in Cyprus misled that they will find “heavenly conditions” and end up work-ing ten or twelve hours per day for very low wag-es. This problem resurfaced these days, due to the permission given to 800 students from Bangladesh to enter Cyprus, by the Minister of Interior Mr Socra-tes Hasikos, despite the warnings of the Immigration

Unit of the police, that these students presented fake documents and thus were registered in the Alert List and the disagreements of the Ministry of Foreign Af-fairs and the Ministry of Education.

Based on the recent memo of the Commissioner for Administration (Ombudsman) submitted to the Parliament during the discussion of the matter, from Cyprus “substantive and procedural guarantees are absent to prevent the risk of misinformation and ex-ploitation of students from third countries”.

Additionally, the Commissioner notes “an inflexi-ble and unfair treatment of these students ... that leads them to quit their studies and consequently be deported from the country”. Based on the memo, the checks made by Private Institu-tions of Higher Education are “random” and “non on a regular basis”, and the legislation implementation on the subject is deficient. The Commissioner stressed that, specific ac-tions or behaviours, are actually characteris-tics of “recruitment”, which lead to forms of trafficking.

The Authority Against Discrim-ination has drafted a detailed report, according to which there is lack of official and uniform source of information for third-country nationals who wish to study in Cyprus, but only scattered information on the websites of various services.

Basically, the students from third countries primarily come in con-tact with the “agents” of private

Colleges and Universities and not any state au-thority. This is an elaborated plot in which private Colleges in collaboration with their agents attract foreign students, by traveling to third countries and presenting misleading and false information to at-tract new “customers”.

There is no willto provide solutionsto the problems resulting from the implementationof their neoliberal policies

housands of young people experienc-ing first hand the austerity measures im-posed, choose to migrate in search of a better future. At the same time the Pres-ident of the governing party, DISI, Mr.

Averof Neophytou, as the main ideological ad-vocate of this policy, praises the Troika for their good cooperation. The same institutions that have brought a series of anti-popular austerity measures that attack the rights and conquests of workers.

Even if the Government and DISI insist on see-ing a “success story” for a return to the interna-tional markets, thousands of people that were affected by their anti-popular austerity policies are still waiting for the Guaranteed Minimum Income (GMI) from the Ministry of Labour. The GMI is manly directed to the vulnerable social groups, as are the long-term unemployed and low-pensioners, aiming at providing a relief for their essential needs.

The Government of mr Anastasiades adds an-other problem to the already difficult condi-tions of leaving of the vulnerable groups of the population, due to the delay of the GMI pay-ment. The way of practice that the government follows indicates that there is no will to pro-vide solutions to the problems resulting from the implementation of their neoliberal policies. On the contrary, it seems as they are constantly trying to prove that they are the best in applying the orders coming from Troika, even if the Pres-ident is trying to convince the public opinion that he was forced to implement those orders.

AKEL has always been by the side of those groups of the population who are most in need (low-pen-sioners, unemployed etc.) and therefor will pro-ceed to submit a Law proposal that will safeguard those groups, that are also victims to the delays and the objections in the process of applying for GMI, while at the same time they lack essential goods for them and their families.

E DON expresses its grief for the fatal incident that took place in Ankara, Turkey, killing dozens of people. On the tragic day of the deadly bomb attack, the People’s Democratic Party and other left and peace-loving forces were peace-fully protesting. The protest was against the tense situation in the country, but also to putan end to the attacks waged by the Turkish army against Kurdish

targets in Syria and northern Iraq.

It causes real anger and revulsion when people who struggle for peace are being murdered by their fellow men because they demand to put an end to armed attacks in order to restore democracy in the country. These fascist actions are not random at all, in view of the forthcoming elections in the country.

We are also familiar with this phenomenon, as the scheming attacks of fascism are the same in every country. The policies of imperialism and the intervention in countries that lack the relevant alliances, causing the tension in the area, are utterly inhuman and condemnable.

EDON expresses its deepest condolences to the families of the victims of this trag-edy, but also our immense solidarity to those forces still fighting for democracy and peace in the country and in the region.

t he 19thRegular Assembly of the World Federation of Democratic Youth will be held,in the capital of Cuba, Havana, on the 9thuntil the 12th of November. In a festive atmosphere of constructive dia-

logue, solidarity and militant hope, the Assembly will be the culmination of the celebrations of the 70 years since the establishment of WFDY, on the November 10th, 1945.

The Assembly aims at analysing the political situation in the light of the anti-imperialist struggle, evaluating the action of WFDY during the previous four years and synthesize the basic policy lines and actions for the years to come until the next Assembly. At the same time the triple campaign announced by WFDY in early 2015 (70 years Antifascist Victory - 70 Years WFDY - 70 years since the crime in Hiroshima-Naga-saki and the struggle for nuclear disarmament) will be at its peak, whilethe 70 years of WFDY will be in the centre, as the Assembly and the founding anniversa-ry of WFDY coincide.

Several organizations from several countries will be present at the Assembly. EDON was elected in the presidency of WFDY during the last Assembly (18th) held in Portugal, and thus has a major role in the suc-cess of this Assembly.

At the same time, after a successful presence in the presidency of WFDY, EDON has decided to reclaim this position. EDON is now more experienced than before, thereforby being re-elected in the presiden-cy of WFDYcan broaden even more the action of the Federation, while keeping as a priority the strength-ening of the anti-imperialist character of WFDY.
