For the past seven years, Kim-berley students, primarily from Selkirk but oftentimes with an as-sist from McKim students, have presented a musical theater per-formance. Past shows have includ-ed old standards such as Oklaho-ma!, Broadway musicals like Les Miserables and musical comedy such as Legally Blond.

After a successful production of Beauty and the Beast last year, music teacher Sven Heyde wanted to try something different this year. And he has chosen a play with a different sort of appeal, the musi-cal Rent.

Rent tells the story of a group of impoverished young artists strug-gling to survive and create a life in New York City’s East Village in th elate 1980s under the shadow of

HIV/AIDS. It debuted in 1996 off Broadway. It moved on to Broad-way and won a Tony for Best Musi-cal during its 12 year run.

B A R R Y CO U LT E RAt the moment John Lennon swore

at Red Robinson on a stage in Vancou-ver, the Beatles and all involved with their first ever Canadian show in 1964 were facing chaos, riot and tumult the like of which had never seen before.

But by that time, Red was used to that kind of situation.

Red Robinson, the legendary Van-couver DJ, spoke to the Cranbrook Daily Townsman in advance the Arts Club production of Red Rock Diner, the musical revue based on his groundbreaking 1950s radio show, playing at the Key City Theatre Nov. Robinson is credited with being the first disc jockey to play the new music of Rock ‘n Roll in Canada. Along the way, he became associated with some of the giants of that era.

Radio was a whole different animal from today, when Red broke into the business as a teenager, and started bringing R&B sounds to the Vancouver airwaves.

“There was a station in Seattle, called KJR, and they played a lot what we called R&B before it morphed into Rock n’ Roll — artists like Ruth Brown, Clyde McPhatter — and I started play-ing it.”

he listened to on a re-cent trip to Palm Springs.

“Except for station breaks and a couple of commercials, there’s no traffic, no human being on the air except pre-re-corded, no intros to re-cords, they don’t tell you who it was. It was a juke-box, period.

“In my time we were nutty and did what we wanted. I loved it. What happened in those days, I’d go on the air and do a show. If I got ratings I kept my job, if I didn’t I was gone. But that’s fine — that’s show business!

“We were entertain-ers, we were also your

pal. Eighty per cent of radio listening, even to this day is done in a car. You’re driving along and you want company. I don’t want wall to wall.

“The kids with ear-buds, they don’t want to know about (radio of yesteryear). But if they knew how good it was, they’d love it.”

The musical “Red Rock Diner,” coming to the Key City Theatre in Cranbrook, Nov. 14, cap-tures the excitement of the era, and Vancouver’s burgeoning rock and roll scene as related by Red. The show’s narrative is five teens come of age while DJ Red Robinson plays the biggest hits of the time.

“It’s basically a time capsule of when I first started out, believe it or not, on CKWX, which is now a news station, but it was the rocker in Van-couver (in the 50s). There’s a DJ, and as he introduces a record, the groups come out and perform them. It’s inter-active, it’s just a riot, it’s so much fun, so fast with so much energy that I’m proud to have my name attached to it.”

Effective November 7th, 2015

“I was going to high school. I never really worked anywhere but Vancouver from the time I was 16, 17.

“I was appearing on a show (on CKWX) be-cause I did voice imper-sonations — Jimmy Stewart and everybody. But they gave me my own show in 1954, and all I did was say, “okay, what are they listening to up at the Oakway, which was a little diner at Oak and Broadway.

“The guy had stuff on the juke box by (R&B singers) Wynonie Harris and Lloyd Price, and I said when you’re fin-ished with those (45s) can I have ‘em? I want to play them on the air. He said sure, take ‘em, I don’t want ‘em.”

Along the way, Red became a concert emcee, introducing art-ists at their Vancouver concerts. Then 1957 came along, and with it a revolution. Elvis Presley

arrived, to play the third — and last — concert he would ever play outside the U.S. (the other two, that same year, were in Ottawa and Toronto).

“Then in August he came here. The circuit for his tour was running up the northwest, so it made sense.”

Vancouver’s first rock and roll show had taken place a year before, when 6,000 turned out to see Bill Haley and the Comets — introduced by Red. Four times that number came out to see Elvis.

“Vancouver, out of that whole 1957 tour, cre-ated the biggest stir and the biggest audience,” Red said. “We were up to 26,000 people — I mean, this is unheard of in 1957. No one rented stadiums for shows. No one, before Elvis. It was an amazing day. I’ve never forgotten it.”

By this time Elvis had recorded eight No. 1 sin-

sense that the world had changed — that some-thing big had arrived. And by the time Red in-troduced the Beatles at their first ever Canadian concert, 1964 in Van-couver, that something had become earthshak-ing. Red recalls:

“After I said, ‘Ladies and Gentlemen, the Beatles,’ I got down to the edge of the stage. The kids start surging to-wards the stage, and I went ‘here we go again,’ and flashed back to Elvis. Brian Epstein, the Beatles’ manager says ‘Red, you gotta get up there and tell them to move back or we’re going to cancel.’ I said ‘What are you talking about, you don’t inter-rupt an act,’ and he said ‘you’re going to inter-rupt an act!’ Bud Err-ington, the police in-spector, said ‘you’re the emcee, it’s your job.’

“So I go up there after

one of the songs — ‘Twist and Shout’ — and as I’m walking across the stage, the cacophony was insane; even when the Beatles aren’t play-ing it’s so loud. And John Lennon looks over at me and says ‘Get the f--- off my stage, nobody inter-rupts the Beatles.’ And I walk over to John and we’re yelling at each other, not because we’re mad but because we can’t hear each other. And Brian Epstein’s giv-ing the high sign from the edge of the stage, and John says, ‘Oh, carry on, Mate!’

“You don’t forget stuff like that.”

The radio personality of that era — the AM disc jockey — an excit-ing, artistic voice in its own right, hardly exists anymore. Programming is tightly controlled, and the human element is generally fading. Red cites two radio stations

gles in two years, had made three movies and was about to release ‘Jailhouse Rock’ as his latest single. Pandemo-nium ensured when Red introduced him on stage.

“Because it was so new, as rock and roll was, the police didn’t know how to handle it. They didn’t have enough cops. They brought in air cadets. Can you imag-ine? 15-year-old kids, trying to hold back the girls who are screaming and going crazy, and the ones who had the poor tickets coming down on the field — it was chaos.”

Red remained friends with Elvis’ band mem-bers Scotty Moore and D.J. Fontana, who in later years recounted that “they said were so scared they just got out of there. And the stage was jerry-built, it was like balsa wood, it was shaking, the crowd was surging forward — it was terrifying.”

The whole concert lasted 22 minutes. And as for Elvis himself:

“He had no conceit, none,” Red said. “He had vanity — he cared how he looked — but if you were sitting in a room with him, he’d talk and ask you questions. He wanted to know about people — he was a good ‘people’ guy, very laid back.”

Still, there was the

“I was the first one to break ‘That’ll Be The Day,’ and I have Buddy Holly on tape introducing it. I used to sit with an old 45 cylindrical record player, I’d put a whole bunch of new releases on and listen to them while I’m doing other work. I’d pull them off if I liked them. And then I’d put them on the air and have people vote on them. ‘That’ll be the Day’ became number one. No one else was playing it. Then all of a sudden a DJ in Cleveland named Tommy Edwards started playing it, and bang! But Buddy never forgot who launched it. It was me.”

DJ Red Robinson (above, left) met and interviewed Buddy Holly, when Holly came to Vancouver with “The Show of Stars” in 1957.

“Vancouver, out of that whole 1957 tour, created the

Owned and operated by BC Hydro, the Elko Dam and Generating Station is located near the community of Elko, 30 kilometres west of Fernie.

The Elk River is considered one of the best kayaking and rafting rivers in the East Kootenay. People come from across North America and the world to recreate on the river, however, they may still be uninformed of the extreme danger of being on the river between the Elko Dam and the Powerhouse.

To address these safety concerns, we’ve designed and installed a warning system at Elko Dam to inform people in the canyon of impending spillway gate changes. The project includes the installation of sirens, strobe lights, improved safety fencing, and additional warning signs between the dam and the powerhouse. This warning system doesn’t inform river users downstream of the powerhouse.

Safety is our number one priority. We’ve installed this system to raise awareness of river hazards associated with dam operations, to improve safety and to ensure that people in the canyon are aware of sudden changes in water levels.

Please note that the land on both sides of the Elk River from the Elko Dam to the Elko Powerhouse is BC Hydro property. For public safety reasons, access to this section of the river across BC Hydro property isn’t permitted.

If you have any questions, or would like more information about the Elko Warning System, please contact Sally MacDonald, Community Relations, at 250 489 6841 or [email protected].

Halloween Safety

•Before the kids hit the streets, know the route that your children plan to follow.•Carrying glow sticks, or using reflective tape or flash-lights are always a good idea •If you are unable to take them out yourself, consider asking another parent, an older sibling or babysitter to do the honours for you.•Teach your children to recognize the places along his/her route where they can obtain help: Police Station, Fire Station or any other well indicated public place.•Stay on the sidewalks (If there is no sidewalk, walk on the left-hand side of the street facing traffic).•Use crosswalks whenever possible: Visit houses on one side of the street at a time and cross the street only at intersections or at marked crosswalks.•Stop and check for cars before crossing the street.•Discuss with your children what they should do to call home in case of emergency.•Safety in numbers: Walk in groups and stay together.•Stay on the outside: Never enter a house; only accept treats at the front door.

Save your treats: Wait until you get home before sam-pling your treats. Though tampering is rare, a respon-sible adult should check out all treats and throw away any spoiled, unwrapped or suspicious items. Police warn against eating any candy that appears to be homemade unless you know the person you are receiving the treats from.

Drivers: Expect the unexpected: slow down, look for pedestrians. The chances of getting into a serious or fatal collision are multiplied when there are lots of kids and teens out on the streets. Remember that there will be more foot traffic on Halloween night and that most of it will be excited young children so leave yourself extra time to navigate residential streets.

It’s Halloween on Saturday, Kim-berley, and there is no shortage of ghoul-related activities available.

While many kids prefer traditional trick or treating and go door to door in the early evening, this year there are a couple of other options as well.

For the parent who may be look-ing to go out to one of the Halloween dances (more about those a bit later) Kimberley’s Chamber of Commerce and Platzl merchants are offering The Platzl Safe Halloween —a family friendly trick or treating event.

Organized by Daleen Bybee, you are invited to bring your kids to the Platzl from 2 to 4 p.m. Shops who are participating will have a sign in their window. This will be the second year

for the Family Trick or Treating event and last year was a great success by all accounts.

Another special tradition in Kim-berley is the Mark Creek Lions Hal-loween Bonfire. At two locations, Centennial Hall in Kimberley and Central Park in Marysville, drop by for free hotdogs and hot chocolate, and warm up by the bonfire from 6 to 9 p.m.

After the trick or treating is over, it’s time for adults to get out. There are two Halloween dances this year. The Kimberley Elks Club is present-ing Nightmare on Elk Street, a Techno Halloween. There will be a $15 cover charge. And over at Centre 64, drop in to the Spooktacular Dance at 8 p.m. Big prizes for the best costume. $20 per ticket.

cause people to think and be moved.”

This will be quite dif-ferent from other pro-ductions in many ways. Instead of a full live or-chestra, Rent requires a four person rock band, which is on stage with the actors. That means no conductor for the singers, which Heyde says will challenge them.

“I am playing drums for the band so I won’t be there out in front for the kids to look at, be-tween them and the au-dience. In the past, if a verse or bar gets dropped, I would be there to help as a con-ductor.”

Heyde says that he will work on this during rehearsal time, creating mistakes so the singers learn how to deal with them and find a solu-

tion.“Theatre is all about

life skills in a variety of ways,” he said.

The cast has already embarked on a rigorous rehearsal schedule for the performance, which is scheduled for April 6 to 9, 2016 at McKim Theatre.

“We are spending lots of dedicated time together. Many, many hours.”

I n my column last week, I mentioned how much I hated some of the euphe-misms we use to mask what’s really going on — like “collateral damage”,

among others. We use euphemisms a lot when we talk

about death. We don’t talk about people dying anymore. We say that she has “passed on”; or “we lost him this week”; or he was “promoted to glory” or “entered into eter-nal rest”; or “God needed a new angel in heaven”.

We use euphemisms like this because we are uncom-fortable with death and dying.

Up till the last 150 years or so, people were so much more accustomed to facing death. Families would lovingly wash and prepare the body for burial after death. All of that changed with the rise of the funeral industry. We have handed that final act of caring to professionals who do it for us.

These days, we live in what theologian Douglas John Hall calls “the officially opti-mistic society”. In such a society, we don’t talk about death. Rather, our society regu-larly engages in what philosopher Ernest Becker calls “the denial of death.”

While we seem to have a nearly insatia-ble appetite for horrifyingly graphic imag-es of violence and death in our television shows, movies, videogames, and news, we simultaneously appear increasingly to be in denial of the common, everyday, garden variety of death which awaits each of us.

So we hide behind euphemisms. Did you know that the US Air Force no longer reports that pilots who crash in combat or training have died? Apparently they expe-rienced “uncontrolled landings into ter-rain”. In the same way, the army reports

not how many of their soldiers died but rather the number of casualties their units suffered. Hospitals also don’t talk about their patients dying, but speak of their “ex-piring”.

We are afraid of death, so we hide be-hind euphemisms.

So when the church celebrates All Saints’ Day on November 1, we are doing something incredibly counter–cultural

and counterintuitive. This festival stands in stark con-trast to a culture which worships youth and boasts that “you can have it all.” On All Saints’ Day, we lift up our mortality and cele-brate the life of all those

who have died. Not those who have “passed on” or those who have been “lost” (like a pair of gloves), or those who have “expired”. We celebrate those who have died in the faith.

The word “saint” comes from a Greek word meaning “holy ones”, which itself comes from a Hebrew word meaning “set apart” for God’s use. A saint, in other words, is someone who belongs to God, who is loyal to God, who lives according to God’s gospel purposes in the world.

The Roman Catholic Church uses a much more narrow and technical defini-tion when they call someone a saint. To be declared a saint in the Roman Catholic Church, a candidate must meet several tests, the most important being to live a life of heroic virtue and to be involved in two miracles. In this way, both Pope John Paul 2 and Pope John 23 were canonized, recog-nized as saints in April 2014.

I prefer a broader understanding of the word “saint”. All Saints’ Day affirms the re-

ality of God’s presence in the world in the lives of all those in whom God’s love shines into the world.

A church in Regina was called All Saints Church. Their motto was, “We are All Saints!” They understood that God was at work in their lives, and that they were called to show God’s love in their daily lives. That’s what a saint does. That’s who a saint is.

In 1929, Lesbia Scott wrote a poem for her children. It became a hymn for All Saints’ Day. The first verse reads, “I sing a song of the saints of God, / patient and brave and true, / who toiled and fought and lived and died / for the Lord they loved and knew. / And one was a doctor, and one was a queen, / and one was a shepherdess on the green; / they were all of them saints of God, and I mean, / God helping, to be one too.”

A saint, said 19th century Danish theo-logian Soren Kierkegaard, is someone whose life manages to be “a cranny through which the infinite peeps”. The early 20th century novelist Laurence Housman wrote that “a saint is someone who makes good-ness attractive.”

On this day, we celebrate all those who have died, who have gone before us in faith. We proclaim boldly and with great hope that death no longer terrifies us. We can look death in the eye and not blink.

Equally importantly, we also say that life no longer terrifies us either. Our whole life is now sanctified, made holy. Our lives are given a purpose, which is that God’s love will be made real in, through, and with us as we dare to live it out.

T he decade from 1923-1933, saw the trappings of classi-

cal composers wedged firmly in the back of the Cranbrook mu-sical closet.

Oh, there was plenty of live music: the Edmondson, Rob-inson, Novak, Bluebird, Gem, Revellers, Linnell, Royal Har-mony Boys, Paramount, and Happy Five Orchestras kept people dancing throughout the flapper years and well into the Depression of the 1930s, but for those who preferred the symphonic genre there was lit-tle else but radio and phono-graph.

In October, 1932, Mr. Wil-liam Raven, a recent arrival, formed the Cranbrook Sym-phony Orchestra, borrowing the name of the group of nearly 20 years earlier. The first per-formance took place in Febru-ary, 1933, at the old Cranbrook Auditorium and was, accord-ing to the local review, “a pre-tentious concert program of high class music rendered without apparent flaw.” The or-chestra consisted of 26 musi-cians including names such as Fiorentino, Ward, Fink, Mans-field, Burton, Kay, LaFleur and Graham.

The Orchestra, often joined by a choral group, continued playing regular concerts over the next three years to audi-ences of varying size and cov-ering pieces from Handel to Rachmaninoff and all points in between. A smaller 13 piece ensemble handled the occa-sional dance, featuring “the music of the singing strings, the brazen brass and the rhyth-mic reeds”.

Sadly, the orchestra went bust when Mr. Raven moved away in the mid-1930s. Despite an attempt to reform the band in 1938 — foiled by the advent of the Second World War — things stayed symphonically south for pretty much the next 40 years. The City Boy’s Band, the Cranbrook Girls Bugle Band and the high school con-cert band helped to fill the gap but it was, all in all, a long bar-ren stretch for classical music in the city.

The Vancouver Symphony made an appearance at the Memorial Arena in 1958, play-ing for an afternoon crowd of 1,300 students (required atten-dance) and an evening show of 600. A Courier newspaper edi-torial pointed out that Leroy Anderson’s “Sleigh Ride” proved “that a symphonic or-

Symphony of the Kootenays (and Other Delights)

For many years the closest Cranbrook came to symphonic music was groups such as the High School Concert Band featuring, among others, Grace Brock, piano; Art Moran, trumpet (standing centre); Ann McGillivray, violin (centre); J. John, tuba and Mr. Truscott, director. Truscott and John were also the coach and captain of the hockey team — classical musicians are often a versatile bunch. – Courier July 2, 1942.

ganization can perform for the crowd just as effi-ciently as any artist gyrat-ing around a guitar.” The symphony musicians proved their versatility by holding an informal eve-ning “blow swing ses-sion” at the Knights of Pythias Hall, demon-strating some “real cool” playing for nearly 200 dancers.

It was not until May, 1975, that long lost hopes of a local symphony came to fruition when Zdenek Kriz and Wendy Panattoni approached the Kimberley Arts Coun-cil requesting support for the newly registered East Kootenay Chamber Or-chestra Association.

Mr. Kriz, a very capa-ble violin/viola graduate of the University of Bratislava and the Czech Radio symphony Orches-tra made his way to the Kootenays from his na-tive country of what was then Czechoslovakia. He joined with Ms. Panatto-ni, a talented Kimberley pia-nist, to lay the groundwork for an orchestra. Their mission was to work with a volunteer board of directors and, with the aid of donors, subscribers, govern-ment grants and any other funding possibilities available, bring in a core group of profes-sional classical players to men-tor local musicians and per-form in regular concerts.

It seemed an admirable concept to many and, so say-ing, the first Cranbrook perfor-mance of the EK Chamber Or-chestra took place in January, 1976, with Mr. Kriz and Ms. Panattoni performing an im-pressive array of pieces from the classical oeuvre.

Attendance-wise, their first Cranbrook concert fell notice-ably short of the mark. A review

in the Townsman of January 27, 1976, did not sugarcoat things. “Sunday evening the Kootenay Chamber Orchestra Society es-tablished itself as a shaky reali-ty in Cranbrook. This town has never been known for its ability to support much more than a couple of pub strippers, but yet it is still sad when the commu-nity of Invermere can draw more concert supporters than a town three times its size. Per-haps what is even more unfor-tunate is that the people who didn’t attend the performance given by viola soloist Zdenek Kris and piano accompanist Wendy Panattoni missed a con-cert of live music which could be appreciated by even the most unsophisticated boob … An exciting addition to the mu-sical offering was the simulta-neous slide presentation …

which represented the period during which the music was written.”

The somewhat in-auspicious premiere fazed neither the musi-cians nor the organiz-ers who, true to their word, undertook regu-lar concerts through-out the Kootenays over the following years. The various ensembles performed in theatres, gymnasiums, commu-nity halls, churches, parks and hotel restau-rants and memorized menus in countless pizza parlours through-out the district.

In 1979, cellist Ron Edinger, a graduate of Pennsylvania State University, replaced Zdenek Kriz as musical director. Ron and his wife, double bass play-er Betsy, became stal-warts of the orchestra for many years. By that time the Chamber Or-chestra had played 120 concerts in virtually

every centre of the Kootenays, joined by a host of talented or-chestral musicians from throughout the district and fea-tured soloists from across the land.

In 1995 the group changed the name to the Symphony of Kootenays and today, forty years later, the symphony con-tinues to provide the best in symphonic music to an appre-ciative fan base throughout the area.

With thanks to Shirley Hansen.

Ice look for revenge as Wheat Kings visit CranbrookOpportunity knocks as Kootenay Ice look to string together consecutive victories

There’s plenty of rea-son to dig into the mem-ory bank this week if you’re the Kootenay Ice.

For starters, the Brandon Wheat Kings (9-3-0-2) cut a swath into Cranbrook Friday night -- the first time the two teams will have met since the Wheaties un-leashed a 13-1 beating on the visiting Ice back on Oct. 9 in Brandon.

But secondly, and perhaps most impor-tantly, the Ice (3-11-1-0) are fresh off a 5-4 over-time victory against the Edmonton Oil Kings -- a win that not only served as relief from a five-game losing streak, but could represent a turn-ing point in the 2015-16 WHL season.

After all, the 2014-15 edition of the Kootenay Ice started the cam-paign 3-13-0-0 before going on an absolute tear -- 15-4-0-0 from November through to Christmas -- in order to pull back into the WHL’s Eastern Conference playoff picture.

Granted the 2014-15 and 2015-16 versions of the Kootenay Ice are radically different, there’s nothing to sug-gest a turnaround isn’t in the cards.

“I don’t think you can compare this year’s team with last year’s team but we can defi-nitely gain momentum and build off that win

we had in Edmonton,” said captain Luke Philp Thursday afternoon prior to practice at West-ern Financial Place. “We’re looking to get better every day here, so that was big and we’re definitely going to try and build off that.”

Philp helped lead the way to Monday’s victory with a four-point effort and as a result, vaulted into the WHL’s top-10 in scoring with nine goals and 21 points through 15 games.

On Philp’s flank Mon-day, as he has been near-ly all season long, was winger Zak Zborosky, who registered the over-time-winning goal in a four-point performance of his own -- a sin-gle-game career high.

Both Philp and Zbo-rosky were around for last season’s slow start and subsequent surge, so if anyone is going to

continue to lead the way towards the playoff pic-ture, it’s these two.

“Yeah, I could see it as a turning point. In the last couple games, we’ve been close -- all those one-goal games,” Zbo-rosky said Thursday. “I think [the win in Ed-monton] was a learning game. If we can continue to play like that and play a full 60 [minutes] -- not give up those goals in the last five minutes, we should be okay.”

Including Monday’s overtime triumph, the Ice have found their way into seven one-goal games so far this season. So while the look in the standings might seem dire, there’s no arguing the fact this team has, on most nights, compet-ed hard and had a shot at victory.

The last time the Ice met with the Wheat Kings, might leave one

begging to differ. But a quick tour through the halls of Western Finan-cial Place will suggest

the team set to take to the ice against the Wheat Kings Friday night is not the same team that was thumped three weeks ago.

“We’re a different team than we were even

two weeks ago,” said Luke Pierce, head coach of the Ice, Thursday. “They’re going through some stuff, too, and they’re obviously going to be hungry. We’ll have to be good, there’s no question.

“You have to respect their talent, but you can’t be scared. We’ve got to be aggressive and challenge them -- take away time and space -- all the things you hear bantam coaches talk about. If we sit back and try to just defend, we’re going to be in trouble. We need to make them play without the puck as much as we can.”

The Wheat Kings are

in the midst of an eight-game road trip, which started well enough with wins in Saskatoon, Spo-kane and Tri-City, before spiralling into back-to-back five-goal losses in Portland (5-0, Oct. 25) and Seattle (7-2, Oct. 27). The mighty Wheaties bounced back with a 3-2 overtime win against the Everett Silvertips Wednesday night.

There’s no doubt the Ice are looking to add to the road woes of the Wheat Kings when they visit Western Financial Place Friday night.

“As players, we have to be a little ticked off that that happened to us,” Philp said. “It was

pretty embarrassing. We’re going to come out with a much better ef-fort.

“They have a lot of good players. They come at you in waves. They have a lot of guys who can score. They’ve got good ‘D’ and good goaltending -- they’re a good team. You can’t look at any particular guy to shutdown. You have to focus on what we can do and not what they’re going to bring.”

Puck drop between the Ice and Wheat Kings is set for 7 p.m. on Col-lege Night at Western Financial Place.

Neil DaviDsoNCanadian Press

The same day he was named Major League Baseball’s executive of the year, Alex Anthopou-los found himself trying to explain why he was facing unemployment.

In a surprising turn of events, the Toronto Blue Jays parted ways with their chief architect Thursday - less than a week after coming with-in one inning of forcing Game 7 in the American League Championship Series.

Anthopoulos said it was his choice, with the final decision coming late Wednesday after-

noon.“I just didn’t feel like

this was the right fit for me going forward,” An-thopoulos told reporters in a conference call Thursday. “Not an easy (decision). Obviously ev-eryone knows how I feel about the organization, the city, the country.”

“By no means was this an easy decision but it was one that I felt I needed to make ... I own this decision. This is on me 100 per cent,” he added.

It was a classy if con-fusing exit.

Despite repeated questions, Anthopoulos did not elaborate on

why he is leaving, other than to say that he want-ed to be true to himself and that the impasse was not due to a finan-cial disagreement. But the GM’s departure comes during a change-over in Jays manage-ment with Mark Shap-iro, the former Cleve-land Indians president, taking over from the de-parting Paul Beeston as president and CEO.

“This decision is solely mine. Mark gave me every opportunity to return. He was sincere in wanting me back ... (Team owner) Rogers and Mark were more than generous, I mean

extremely generous,” Anthopoulos said.

“I don’t know that it’s fair to really get into any specifics out of respect to Rogers, to Mark, to the Blue Jays, to the or-ganization,” added the Montreal native.

Anthopoulos left more questions than answers. He said he wanted to be back and that ownership and his new boss wanted him to stay. But clearly the team’s new landscape was not one he could live with.

He declined to say why it was not a good fit. But he went out of his way to praise Shapiro

and Rogers, stressing that the baseball team is in good hands.

“I know this is not an easy day for anybody ... I don’t think any of us wanted this to happen.”

Anthopoulos, 38, turned down a five-year contract extension, amid speculation of a difference in vision with Shapiro who does not officially take up his new job until Monday.

Unlike Beeston, Sha-piro is a president im-mersed in the baseball side - and one who clearly has his own views on how to run a club. Shapiro and An-thopoulos don’t appear

to be on the same page, although Anthopoulos rejected the suggestion of a power struggle.

Anthopoulos said he did not have another job lined up, although he said his phone “explod-ed” Thursday once news of his pending depar-ture broke.

“My focus was on the Toronto Blue Jays and it will be really through Saturday, at least. What happens after that, I’ve no idea.”

He said he would take time to “recalibrate” and evaluate his options.

Anthopoulos was named Sporting News’ 2015 Major League

Baseball Executive of the Year, as selected by a panel of 47 major-league executives in voting prior to the post-season.

“I’m very honoured and grateful,” said An-thopoulos, the first Jays executive to win the award.

Beeston, an un-abashed backer of An-thopoulos, confirmed in a statement earlier Thursday that the team’s popular GM and senior vice-president of base-ball operations was leaving.

More questions than answers surround Anthopoulos departure from Blue Jays

“After an exciting 2015 season, Alex An-thopoulos has reluc-tantly and regrettably decided that he is not going to return to the Toronto Blue Jays base-ball club for 2016,” said Beeston. “Alex has done an unbelievable job and positioned us well for the future. He can take great pride in his past and while we do not know where his future is taking him, we do know wherever he is going, he will be successful.”

Anthopoulos, then assistant general man-ager, took over as Toron-to’s GM in 2009 after J.P. Ricciardi was fired.

The Jays went 489-483 under Anthopoulos, according to Sportsnet, but soared this year.

The GM earned kudos for a string of moves that produced a thrilling 93-69 campaign and a return to the play-offs after 22 years. Fans across the country fol-lowed the Jays’ wild post-season run and Thursday’s divorce was unexpected in the wake of team’s playoff success.

“Alex has done a ter-rific job as GM of the Blue Jays over the past six seasons, and we would have loved it if he stayed with the club,” Edward Rogers, chair-man of the Toronto Blue Jays, said in a separate statement.

“Like the fans, we too are disappointed he has chosen not to accept our five-year contract offer, but we wish him the very best. Alex leaves behind an outstanding front office team and coaching staff that played a key role in shaping the team’s great run this season.”

The departure of An-thopoulos raises ques-tions over the future of his handpicked support team.

Manager John Gib-bons is on a rolling con-tract - 2016 is already in place with another year set to be added Jan. 1.

Ironically his split with the Jays came days after his finest moment - with the team going 11 games deep into the playoffs.

He helped end the team’s playoff drought by retooling in the off-season and then showing some impres-sive sleight of hand be-fore the trade deadline.

Signing Canadian catcher Russell Martin

and trading for third baseman Josh Donald-son provided an up-grade on and off the field. Then the deadline acquisitions of David Price, Ben Revere, Troy Tulowitzki and LaTroy Hawkins helped the

team to a remarkable second-half surge.

But the 2015 champi-onship run came at a price. Toronto gave up some of its top pros-pects, as it did in trades in previous years with the Mets and Marlins.

But nobody com-plained as playoff base-ball returned to Toronto.

In other Jays’ news, And Martin, pitcher Mark Buehrle and cen-tre-fielder Kevin Pillar were named 2015 Gold Glove Award finalists.

Edmonton Oilers defenceman Jus-tin Schultz will miss two to four weeks with a back injury, the club an-nounced Thursday.

The 25-year-old left early in the second period of Sunday’s game

against the Los Angeles Kings and did not return.

Schultz has one assist and a minus-6 rating through nine games during the 2015-16 NHL season.

In 212 career games with the Oil-ers, the Kelowna, B.C., native has 25 goals and 67 assists.

ARIES (March 21-April 19) Tension surrounds others in your day-to-day life. You mean well, and people sense that quality in you. Don’t sell yourself short. Know that a loved one’s nerves might be frayed, and use your in-tuition and sensitivity with him or her. Tonight: Have a last-min-ute chat about Halloween. TAURUS (April 20-May 20) Be aware of how indulgence plays into your budget. Someone who benefits from your generos-ity could be manipulating you to get more. Learn how to say “no” more. You could be inspired by a pal to do something very differ-ent this Halloween. Tonight: Let the good times roll. GEMINI (May 21-June 20) You might not be evoking the response you desire from a loved one. Manipulation won’t work. You also could be missing im-portant facts. A boss or parent demands an inordinate amount of your attention. Make it your pleasure. Tonight: Out on the town.

CANCER (June 21-July 22) Maintain a low profile. You’ll need to gather your strength for the weekend. You could be head-ing to Halloween celebrations or getting a costume ready. Be sensitive to someone’s request. Make it OK to say “no,” as you might be off-kilter. Tonight: Reach out to a loved one. LEO (July 23-Aug. 22) Zero in on a friendship. You could find that there is an element about this person that encour-ages you to overindulge. Rein in your self-discipline if need be. A partner or loved one will be unusually seductive. Tonight: Let a friend lure you into his or her Halloween plans. VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22) Others often talk about their expectations but do nothing. You might want to challenge them. When you’re in a leadership po-sition, you know how to encour-age people. Manifest those skills, and add a touch of personality. Tonight: The party could go till the wee hours. LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22) Investigate the possibilities

rather than nix anyone’s idea. In fact, a suggestion that seems far out of left field could prove to be a gift when you start working with it. Your inner voice might be pushing you in a certain direc-tion. Listen to it. Tonight: Try a new spot. SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21) You might be intrigued by a loved one’s plans. Friends seem to pull you into an unrelated realm, but you will enjoy the diversity. Expect the unexpect-ed, or you could be wary with-out knowing why. Tonight: You choose where and with whom you want to be. SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21) Defer to a partner who is more social than you are. You could be all over the map about an issue, whereas this person is not. Fo-cus on what is ailing you. Don’t forget what is happening with a family member. You can’t just ignore this issue. Tonight: Follow the gang. CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19) Pace yourself, as you have a lot of ground to cover. An adviser or friend might present the facts

in a new light, which is likely to open up a new door. You could be surprised by a new path that you had not yet considered. Tonight: Hang out with great friends and a few goblins. AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18) Creativity surges with each imaginative comment, sugges-tion or plan you come up with. Your friends and family will de-light in brainstorming with you. Drop the word “impossible” from your vocabulary. You will be hap-pier as a result. Tonight: Use your imagination. PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20) Sometimes you simply are not in the mood to deal with pres-sure. How you deal with these moments can have a long-term effect on your relationships. Tension mounts, despite your efforts. Erase negative thoughts and see what happens. Tonight: Dress up like a couch potato. BORN TODAY Former U.S. President John Ad-ams (1735), actor Henry Winkler (1946), singer Vanessa White (1989) ***

Dear Annie: My husband and I have been happily married for 20 years. After the kids were grown, we decided to downsize. We put our home on the market and moved to a different state. My husband’s mother did not want us to move. She started interfering with the real estate office that was showing our house. She was given written warnings to stay away from the property. She then stripped all our perennials and trellises and took the picnic table and hoses -- anything she could get off the property. She left a huge mess, and I had to pay someone to clean it up. She wouldn’t stop, so I finally called law enforcement. Now members of the family have labeled me “psycho” because I filed a complaint, but the local police haven’t done anything. Mom continues to arrive at showings and claims she is the caretaker. What can I do to stop this woman without breeding more ill will? -- Fed-Up Psycho Dear Fed Up: Your mother-in-law’s behavior is outrageous. Where is your husband in all this? He should quite firmly inform his mother that her punitive and destructive actions must stop immediately or she risks estrangement from his family. It is obvious that she is so frightened and upset by your departure that she believes her only recourse is sabotage. You both need to reassure her that living elsewhere will not keep you from calling, writing and visiting often. If she is incapable of adjusting, however, suggest she get professional help. It sounds like she could use it. Dear Annie: I am a 15-year-old freshman. My best friend, “Ella,” recently told me she is constantly depressed. She said she’s tired of living behind a mask and wants people to understand. Ella told me she’s thought about cutting herself. She is usually a bright and cheery person, so this came as a shock. I can’t help thinking that maybe I never knew the real girl. She absolutely refuses to talk to her parents because she dislikes them. To me they seem like great parents, but I don’t live in her house. What should I do? I don’t want to let Ella down in her time of need. -- Trying To Understand Dear Trying: If Ella won’t talk about this with her parents, encourage her to talk to the school counselor, a favorite teacher or another trusted adult. Suggest she get some exercise. It boosts endorphin levels and could make her feel better. You are a good friend to care about Ella’s mental health. Both of you can get more information through the teens site at kidshealth.org. You also should discuss this with your own parents so they can help you work on it. Edwin Roy BeduzOctober 27, 1930 - October 23, 2015

It is with deep sadness and sorrow that we announce the sudden and unexpected passing of our father Roy Beduz.Roy, born and raised in Kimberley, BC, began

sister Julia. He is survived by his sons Michael and Philip (Christie) and grandchildren David, Katarina, Sophia and Maya.

Raised in Cranbrook, Mike enrolled in the University of Alberta but joined the Canadian Air Force after one year, serving as a flight instructor during WWII. Following the war, he attended UBC law school and married his high school sweetheart Charlotte Wilks. He graduated in 1949 and returned to Cranbrook to practice law and raise his family. Mike was appointed a Judge of the County Court in 1963, became a Justice of the Supreme Court of British Columbia when the courts merged in 1990 and retired in 1992. He was quietly pleased that few of his judgements were overturned.

Mike loved life, including golf, skiing, summers at his Monroe Lake cabin and especially desserts. He enjoyed skiing and golf until his 80s, but enjoyed desserts into his 90s. He also loved being a part of Cranbrook family dinners hosted by his nieces Marian, Joan and Jerri-Pat and grand-niece Lisa. He lived independently and drove a car until he was 92. His was a long and full life.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 am on Saturday, November 7th at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Cranbrook, followed by a reception. In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation to the Canadian Cancer Society (http://bit.ly/1POffGS) in memory of Mike.Arrangements entrusted to McPherson Funeral Service.

Condolences for the family can be offered at:www.mcphersonfh.com

Provenzano, The Honourable MichelangeloSeptember 22, 1922 – October 19, 2015

Following a long and healthy life well lived, Mike died in his hometown of Cranbrook, BC at the age of 93. The third of Lucia and Francesco Provenzano’s four children, he was predeceased by his wife Charlotte, brothers Angelo and Giuseppe and

Peter William DavidsonApril 7, 1946 to October 25, 2015

It is with great sadness that we announce the sudden passing of our Dad, Peter. He died while doing what he loved most, hiking in the mountains with friends. He will be greatly missed by his loving wife of 41 years, Maureen, his children: Julie (Adam), Annalise (Mat), Shaun and Melissa (Will). He is survived by his brothers Dick and Bob and predeceased by his parents, Red and Audrey, and his siblings Mike and Carol. Peter was born in Lethbridge, Alberta and grew up on a farm 4 miles east of Coaldale. In the summers, between the ages of 14 and 23 he herded domestic sheep on his family’s mountain lease in the Kananaskis. This led him to university where he earned three degrees, preparing him for a career as a biologist. In 1982 he got his dream job working with the Rocky Mountain Bighorn Sheep, where he inspired people to participate and become part of their recovery success. Peter was actively involved with the Rocky Mountain Naturalist Society, Rocky Mountain Trench Society and  East Kootenay Invasive Plant Council. He sang with the Sun Valley Song Choir, Chuck Bissett Choir, and for whoever else needed a strong, good looking tenor. He shared his passion, his respect for, and love of the great outdoors with everyone he met.Special thanks to the members of the Rocky Mountain Naturalists and emergency 911 personnel.  And huge thanks to Cst. Brad Sabo and Dr. Gerry McIntyre for their compassion and sense of humour.A celebration of his life will be held at 1:00 pm on Saturday October 31 at Christ Church Anglican, 46 - 13th Avenue S, Cranbrook BC.Memorial Donations can be made to Christ Church Anglican Memorial Fund.

SubmittedThe children love the

new carpet at Tumble Time!

Tumble Time is a free drop in program for families with children from birth to 5 years of age, provided by the Community Action Pro-gram for Children (CAPC).

Tumble Time is lo-cated in the lower level of St. Mary’s Indepen-dent Catholic School. Now with the new car-pet over top of what used to be a cement floor, it’s safer, softer, quieter and cozier.

The play space that houses Tumble Time is also used by Montessori Preschool as well as St. Mary’s Daycare who are also enjoying the new flooring.

St. Mary’s Catholic Independent School and their Parent Support Group donated the larg-est portion of the fund-ing for the carpet. Dona-tions were also made by the Cranbrook Women’s Ministry Network of the Cranbrook United Church as well as Cran-brook Flooring who in-

stalled the carpet. Thank you so much

to everyone who made this possible!

If you’re a parent, grandparent or caregiv-er of a child under the age of five, join us on

Thursday mornings from 9:30am-11am at Tumble Time. Hope to see you there!

Call Chalet Chevrolet Buick GMC at 250-427-4895, or visit us at 1142 - 304 Street, Kimberley.

Jeff NagelBlack Press

Contraband or counter-feit cigarettes that avoid gov-ernment taxes and are often sold to teens are much more readily available in B.C. than Alberta, according to a new study.

Illegal smokes made up 15 per cent of the discarded butts sampled at sites across B.C., including schools and hospitals, compared to 10 per cent in Alberta.

The survey was commis-sioned by the Western Con-venience Stores Association,

which wants the province to crack down on the illegal sales.

WCSA president Andrew Klukas admits his members have a motive to get more customers in their stores, but insists it’s in the public inter-est.

“To see this going on across the street from us, to see these products being sold without tax to kids, without any age testing or any controls, is extremely frustrating,” Klukas said.

The rate of illegal tobacco

found in butts discarded at B.C. schools was 15.5 per cent, the highest in western Canada.

Surrey’s Tamanawis Sec-ondary had the highest rate among B.C. schools – 19.7 per cent of discarded butts there were illicit smokes.

The rate was nearly 39 per cent outside the Passport Canada office in downtown Vancouver, nearly 32 per cent at UBC and about 25 per cent at Terrace’s Mills Me-morial Hospital as well as a federal government building

in Surrey’s Newton area. The association argues

high taxes and other govern-ment regulations have en-couraged the underground tobacco business, where consumers can get cigarettes on the cheap.

“A lot of people are using these products and they sim-ply don’t understand it’s not victimless,” Klukas said.

Besides the estimated $120 million a year in lost government tax revenue, he said the trade helps fuel or-ganized crime in B.C. and

across the country. Most of the unauthorized

smokes sold in B.C. are pro-duced on aboriginal reserves in Quebec or Ontario and are smuggled across the coun-try, Klukas said.

He said B.C. could follow other provinces and let mu-nicipal police forces keep the proceeds of crime, giving them a financial incentive to tackle smuggled smokes.

Klukas also argues the province’s finance ministry doesn’t have enough staff pursuing fraud investiga-

tions.“Get some more boots on

the ground and it will pay for itself,” he suggested.

Klukas said the WCSA is not lobbying government to reduce tobacco taxes, but ar-gues they can’t be increased without first getting control of the problem.

Provincial fraud investi-gators have an illegal tobac-co tipline that accepts anon-ymous reports at 1-877-977-0858.
