Let me start with just 1 reference from Vedas and1 from Puranas (to keep this answer short - we will nothave enough space if we want to document all suchreferences).

The Rishi Medhātithi,after preparing bricks for a Vedic ritual, prays to the Lordof fire,Agni.

(The mantra recited is in vogue for srivaikhanasaArchakas in Agniprathishta till now.... Ima me agnaishtaka....)

Meaning:

Oh Agni! Let these bricks be milk giving cows tome. Please give me one and ten and hundred andthousand. Ten thousand and lakh and ten lakh and Onecrore and ten crore and hundred crore,A thousand croreand one lakh crore in this world and other worlds too.

I have just given couple of references (which isjust the tip of iceberg). If we read with an open mind wecan find many more such references. This clearly showsthat ancient Indians knew a lot of mathematics,counting, decimal systems etc. Why are we getting such"Intelligent" questions, when the truth is actually theopposite?1. This question arises due to our ignorance. One of the

biggest atrocity done by Britishers to India was toeradicate the Guru-Sishya tradition of educating ourancient knowledge and values. We are repeatedlyfed irrelevant data about our past, to the extent thatwe all either feel ashamed to talk about it. Even thosewho talk, do so with a sense of guilt.

2. We also blindly vomit (reproduce) the Macaulaybased education system that Britishers left us with.One of such nonsense is that Aryabhatta "invented"zero. This is an ambiguous statement, which doesn'tgive the right perspective to Aryabhatta'scontribution. Another such nonsense is that there isClassical Sanskrit (whose grammar was codified byPanini) and then there is Vedic Sanskrit, which issomehow a different language. Absolutely wrong -Panini composed a treatise summarizing theSanskrit grammar from days of yore - till his time.This doesn't mean that the language itself didn't existor it existed as a different language.

3. We also have a distorted version of "Secularism" andit has become a fad among our generation to postsuch questions and jokes, which makes us look"cool".

Rather than saying that Aryabhatta "Inventedzero", I would say that he was the first person to formallydefine the place value system using Zero. He alsoelaborated on its mathematical usage. The alternativeavailable was Roman numerals, which is not scalable(to the levels that our Vedas went). Why we referAryabhatta and not our Vedic and Puranic texts:Aryabhatta's work was intended to be a Mathematicaltreatise. His work summarizes the knowledge that wasavailable with us until that time. Our Puranas andItihasas on other hand, though had several referencesto larger and smaller numbers, were not Mathematicaltexts - Maths in them were incidental.
