From the Head of Junior School

Dear Parents The Junior School Track and Field Carnival was held last Friday with this being a most enjoyable day. All boys competed in various track and field events and our younger boys also participated in some novelty activities. I thank Mr David Anderson, Sportsmaster, for organising and running the carnival so very well. I also value and appreciate the support of the entire Junior School staff ensuring the carnival ran smoothly. Congratulations to Boyce for their success on the day and to all boys who competed in the right spirit.

A new House award was introduced at the Track and Field Carnival. This is titled the Trophy for House Spirit. Points were awarded for House war cries, creativity, organisation and evidence of House spirit. This trophy will now be awarded at each of our sporting carnivals and is independent of the points earned for athletic prowess. Congratulations to Taylor for winning the House Spirit Trophy on Friday.

possession of the new Trophy for House Spirit.

The support for the boys at the Track and Field Carnival on Friday last week was great to see.

Parent Seminar Series Last night we hosted another presentation in our ongoing series of seminars for parents. Mr David Neilson and Ms Sara Black, behavioural optometrists and parents of boys in the Junior School, presented at our staff meeting and then to parents later in the evening. The topic was titled ‘Assisting your son with reading’ with the presentations being well received. I thank David and Sara for being generous with their time and offering their expertise to staff and parents. Under Eights’ Week Last week, our boys from Prep to Year 2 joined with students from Fairholme College and The Glennie School in the same year levels for Under Eights’ Week activities. This is part of a structured program that occurs across the three schools, ensuring boys and girls of the same age spend time together undertaking a range of activities. This was a joyous occasion for the youngest children across the three schools.

From the Deputy Head of Junior School Haircuts Recently I have noticed a few boys who require a haircut. “The school’s regulations concerning haircuts are as follows: the hair must not touch the collar, and must be neatly shaped at the back of the neck. The ears must not be obscured and side-levers must not extend past the middle of the ear. Extremes of hairstyles are not permitted (including very short haircuts). Boys are not permitted to dye or colour their hair.” This is an excerpt from the Student Handbook. Mike Sharpe Deputy Head of Junior School

Year 6 Canberra 2017 The Year 6 boys recently returned from an educational tour of the national capital. During our trip students were provided with many opportunities to participate in a variety of educational programs with a focus on Australia’s history, culture, heritage and democracy. The Australian Government recognises the importance of all young Australians being able to visit the national capital as part of their Civics and Citizenship education. To assist families in meeting the cost of the excursion the Australian Government is contributing funding of $60.00 per student under the Parliament and Civics Education Rebate (PACER) program towards those costs. We had a couple of clear highlights during this trip. Meeting His Excellency General the Honourable Sir Peter Cosgrove AK MC at Government House and being joined by Dr John McVeigh (Member for Groom) at the Australian War Memorial for a wreath laying ceremony. In addition, having Questacon all to ourselves was particularly special, as was our visit by Mr James Bunce (son of Tim Bunce) at Parliament House who was able to explain why we had arrived on an important day in the parliamentary year – Budget Day.

One final point to note was that the behaviour of the boys was exemplary and they represented the School magnificently. On many different occasions, at the War Memorial, in Parliament House and at the airport, members of the public asked staff which school we were from and we were commended on our manners and behaviour. The students of the 2017 Toowoomba Grammar School Canberra Tour continued the great legacy that has been set by previous year groups. Well done boys!

Music News

String Out Next Wednesday, 7 June, boys from our String Ensemble have been invited to participate in String Out 2017. String Out is a fabulous day of music making, where primary-aged string players from schools across Toowoomba join together for a day of rehearsals, culminating in an evening performance at the Empire Theatre. A note with details has been sent home to the relevant boys. Please contact Mrs Egerton if you have any questions regarding String Out. Bupa nursing home visit Next Thursday, 8 June, some of our ensembles will be visiting Bupa Nursing Home to present a musical concert and entertain the residents. Orchestra program 2017 The Junior School Orchestra is formed annually to provide our young musicians with an opportunity to perform at significant events in a large ensemble. This year, the Orchestra will perform at the Toowoomba Eisteddfod. This performance will take place in August, with the dates to be confirmed early next term. All members of the Concert Band and String Ensemble are invited to be members of the Junior School Orchestra. In order to prepare the Orchestra for our Eisteddfod performance, three rehearsal times have been booked for this term. Rehearsal times for Term 3 will be released closer to the date. The rehearsal dates and times have been planned around class timetables, and in order to minimise time out of class, these rehearsals rotate through either Voiceworx rehearsal times or assembly time where possible. Please note the rehearsal times for this term, commencing this week

Thursday, week 7, period 3

Thursday, week 8, assembly time

Tuesday, week 9, period 1 As the orchestra program is only a 6 week program, it is imperative that all members attend each rehearsal. Could you please ensure that your son has his instrument, and a school music folder (this may be one that he is currently using for another ensemble), at school for each of the above-mentioned dates. If you have any questions, please contact Mrs Jayne Davidson via email ([email protected]). Additional ensemble rehearsals (student free day – Monday 10 July) As part of our preparation for performances at the Toowoomba Eisteddfod in the first few weeks of Term 3, additional rehearsals have been scheduled for the student free day (Monday 10 July) in Term 3. Could we ask that all members of Orchestra, Concert Band, Introductory Band, Percussion Ensemble, Chamber Winds, Jazz Band and String Ensemble mark this date in their diary. A note with detailed rehearsal times will be sent home in the coming weeks. It is most important that all members of our instrumental ensembles make themselves available for these additional rehearsals in the lead up to their eisteddfod performances next term. If your son is unable to attend a rehearsal, please contact the ensemble conductor prior to the rehearsal day. QSO The Queensland Symphony Orchestra (QSO) are visiting Toowoomba for a concert at the Empire Theatre on Thursday 22 June. If you and your son are interested in attending this concert, please contact the Empire Theatre to purchase tickets. Term 3 dates Please note the following dates for Term 3 music activities and events.

- Monday 10 July – extra rehearsals for all instrumental ensembles (Times TBA) - Thursday 20 July – Musicians’ Cup (6.00pm in the Junior School Hall) - Thursday 27 July – Eisteddfod (part 2 – instrumental) commences - Tuesday 1 August – GPS Music Day of Excellence - Thursday 17 August – Musicians’ Concert (2.10pm)

After School Care What we have done this past fortnight This past fortnight we have been learning more about each other as the boys have all taken the time to fill in a profile map about themselves and what they like. This allows us to not only get to know the boys better but also to better plan activities to their interests. We have talked about getting involved in leadership roles which will help the boys feel an increased amount of responsibility within the service. Inside, we have had fun making shapes and ‘food’ out of play-doh, creating Egyptian name signs, doing some painting on their apple pop stick art as well as learning a new card game. The boys also got the chance to play around with electrical circuits which they created to make a light turn on, a buzzer sound and a fan spin. Outside the boys have been engaging in a range of different sporting games and free play which allows them to freely follow their own interests. What we have planned for the next week For the next week we will be implementing the leadership roles within the service. The boys have been doing buddy reading with the younger boys for their homework and so far it’s been quite effective. Outside the boys will be able to do some free play along with some organised group games that our leader of fun will facilitate. Inside we will continue to get the boys’ minds engaged by doing some challenges involving Lego, straws and paddle pop sticks. What to do if your child is absent from After School Care Please remember parents if your son is going to be absent from the service or has gone home sick please call us on 0421 570 461 or notify the customer experience team.
