The award Monday for general non-fiction went to Dan Fagin’s “Toms River: A Story of Science and Salvation,” a chronicle of industrial destruction in a small New Jersey community that was

praised by The New York Times as a “classic of science reporting.” Megan Marshall’s “Margaret Fuller: A New American Life,” about the 19th century intellectual and transcendentalist, won

for biography; and Vijay Seshadri’s witty and philosophical “3 Sections” received the poetry prize.

The Pulitzer for music was given to John Luther Adams’ “Become Ocean,” which judges cited as “a haunting orches-tral work that suggests a relentless tidal surge, evoking thoughts of melting polar ice and rising sea levels.”

Tartt’s novel, a sweeping, Dickensian tale about a young orphan set in modern Manhattan, was published last fall to high praise and quick commercial success that has not relented. “The Goldfinch” has been nominated for a National Book Crit-ics Circle prize and an Andrew Carnegie Medal and on Monday was in the top 40 on Amazon.com’s best seller list even before the Pulitzer was announced.

Fans of the 50-year-old Mississippi native, many of whom still had strong memories of her 1992 debut, “The Se-cret History,” had waited a decade for her to complete her third novel. “The Goldfinch” was published after the disap-pointing “The Little Friend.” The Pulitzer will likely ensure her place among the elite of contemporary fiction writers and make “The Goldfinch” a million seller.

Associated Press WriterHONG KONG — China’s state-owned

film distributor is making its first investment in Hollywood movies by taking a stake in two Legendary Entertainment productions.

China Film Co. will make an “eight-figure equity investment” in two upcoming films, “Seventh Son” and “Warcraft,” the Chinese unit of Legendary Entertainment said Tuesday. The exact amount of the U.S. dollar investment was not specified.

“Seventh Son” is a fantasy adventure star-ring Jeff Bridges and Julianne Moore that’s scheduled for release on Feb. 6, 2015. “War-craft,” based on a popular video game series, is slated for release March 11, 2016.

If approved for release in China, China Film would distribute the movies under current rules and regulations for foreign films, which are limited to just 34 a year. The deal calls for China Film to be credited on the movies.

China Film, which is planning to go

public, owns stakes in movie theater chains that make up half of the country’s box office receipts. Its parent, China Film Group, is the gatekeeper for foreign studios because it controls film imports and co-productions.

The projects are the first since Legendary and China Film teamed up about a year ago to produce global blockbusters. It’s one of a number of recent tie-ups between companies in the world’s two biggest movies markets.

As box-office revenue growth flattens out at home, Hollywood studies are keen to move into China, now the world’s second biggest movie market with $3.6 billion in ticket sales last year. China’s leaders hope that entertainment companies can benefit from the joint ventures by acquiring know-how to develop their own cultural industries in order to expand influence abroad. Legendary Enter-tainment’s films include “The Dark Knight” and “Hangover” trilogies and last year’s sci-fi action adventure “Pacific Rim.”

One of the country’s top colonial historians, Alan Taylor, has won his second Pulitzer, for “The Internal Enemy: Slavery and War In Virginia.” Annie Baker’s “The Flick” won the Pulitzer for drama, a play set in a movie theater that was called a “thoughtful drama with well-crafted characters” which created “lives rarely seen on the stage.”

Students reported to get an accident, almost 10 parents defraudedof Sanglah Hospital occurred on Monday (Apr 14). Not only one, the same mode of fraud cases occurred up to 10 times

from 07:30 until 10:30 in the morning. The victims also had similarities. All the cases tar-geted the parents of the SMKN 5 Denpasar vocational school students of grade 3 who were attending the national exam.

According to security guard of Sanglah Hospital, the of-fender defrauded the victims by telephone and admitted to be a doctor, hospital man-agement, police officer and hospital pharmacy staff. “The offender claimed to be a dif-ferent person. However, the purpose was the same, namely asking the family to transfer money as soon as possible,” said the officer.

The victims got information from the offender that their child had a severe accident and needed help immediately. All the victims were asked to transfer money immediately

for the purchase of tools. Otherwise, their children could not be helped. Further, the officer added that of the 10 victims, a parent had transferred money amounted to IDR 10 million. The remaining parents were panic and came directly to Sanglah Hos-pital to ask for information about their child, which of course were not registered because they did not get any accident.

One of the victims’ family coming to Sanglah Hospital was Ketut Suar-sana, a resident from Kintamani. He claimed to get a call from a person who claimed as a doctor at Sanglah Hospital. “I was asked to transfer money as soon as possible because my child needed a tool that was not available at Sanglah Hospital,” said Suarsana who lived at Kedonganan. He and his wife did not transfer the money immediately, but rechecked it first to Sanglah Hospital. In fact, they could not find their child being treated in the hospital. Having been

checked to school, their child was undergoing a national exam.

The Legal and Public Relations Division Head of Sanglah Hospital, Putu Putra Wisada, appealed to the public not to immediately believe when receiving a call on behalf of Sanglah Hospital asking for some money. “If the management of San-glah Hospital contacted the patient’s family, it is usually just to inform if there was family member or relative who was hospitalized and required immediate arrival,” he said.

The arrival of family was needed to sign the necessary action as part of the procedures. However, in case there was no family attendance, the act of saving the patient’s life would still be conducted in accordance with the established procedures. “Regarding the payment, the Sanglah Hospital never asks for any upfront payment, but the payment is only made when the patient has recovered and can go home,” said Putu. In response to such issue, the academician of agriculture, I Putu Sudiarta, Ph.D., said that his party supported the Minis-ter of Agriculture, Suswono, who asked the regents and local governments to protect the productive agricultural land. If it could be realized, it would be able to suppress the farmland conversion.

“More and more farmland conversion will threaten our food needs. Besides, it can also lead to food insecurity,” he added.

Sudiarta confirmed that it was impossible to maintain the ag-ricultural land if the agricultural products were not appreciated. Moreover, the price of land in Bali was getting more expensive. Meanwhile, the price of agricultural products was very cheap. “When such condition persists, who can stop farmers from selling their land? Therefore, the government plays a very im-portant role and should appreciate the efforts of farmers,” said the lecturer of agriculture from the Udayana University.

Subsidies of the government, said Sudiarta, were very im-portant at this time. The government should have the courage to purchase the agricultural commodities at high prices and sold cheaply to the public. Here was the benefit of subsidies. In addition to farmers, people who purchased the agricultural products could also enjoy the subsidies.

“I do hope the government can do it if it wants to sustain the agriculture of Bali. In addition, it is also intended in order that we do not depend on the import of agricultural products and such condition makes farmers hard,” said Sudiarta.

Meanwhile, Chairman of the Bali Environmental Care Fo-rum, AA Gede Putra Arjawa, agreed as well. Supposedly the central and local government equally improved the welfare of farmers to prevent the land conversion. He asserted that there should be supporting rules so that the government could control based on the rules.

“In practice, the government often flirted with capital own-ers. As a result, the rules become weak and this matter must be addressed,” said Arjawa. (rah)

JAKARTA - Minister of Tour-ism and Creative Economy, Mari Pangestu, said the investment in tourism sector had increased significantly. Until late last year, the investment in tourism sector reached USD 602,648 million consisting of USD 462.47 million in the form of foreign direct in-vestment (PMA) and USD 140.18 million in the form of domestic investment (PMDN). “Most of these investments were used to build hotels and restaurants,” she said at the opening of the Second APKASI International Trade and Investment Summit (AITIS) 2014 in Jakarta, Monday (Apr 14).

Mari said that Indonesia was a long-term investment destina-

tion country (investment grade) including the most attractive for tourism sector internationally. “Many international agencies rated Indonesian increasingly attractive for the investment in medium- and long-term,” said Mari.

Some examples of invest-ments made in anticipating the increasing demand including in the second and third tier cities were three domestic operators (Santika Hotel Group, Tauzia Ho-tel and Dafam Hotel). They were recorded as the national operators aggressively making expansion. As planned, the operators would add 140 hotel chains.

Foreign operator Carlson Rezi-dor with its local partner PT Pan-orama Group planned to expand its network by building 20 new

hotels within 5-7 years to come. “Four of them have started to be realized this year in Lampung, Bali, Makassar and Bandung, with a total investment of USD 250 mil-lion,” she said.

In the same period, she said, the tourism sector generated the income worth USD 10 billion so it ranked fourth after oil and gas, coal and oil palm. Tourism also contributed 3.8 percent to the na-tional GDP and created as many as 10.18 million job opportunities or 8.9 percent nationally. “While the economic contribution of the creative sector reached IDR 641.8 billion or 7 percent of the national GDP,” said Mari.

The achievement was insepa-rable from the ASEAN tourism growth denoting the highest in

the world. According to Mari, during the period of 2005-2012, the tourism of ASEAN grew at an average of 8.3 percent per year, above the average of global growth of just 3.6 percent. Even, in 2013, the flow of tourists to the ASEAN countries had reached 92.7 million, an increase of 12 percent over the previous year, while the global growth was only 5 percent.

Mari predicted that in 2023 the potential contribution of tourism to the economy of this region was projected to reach USD 480 billion with the average growth of 5.8 per-cent per year, while the investment growth was about 6.8 percent per year. “Such development makes the role of tourism sector increas-ingly important for the economy

of the ASEAN countries. It is a great opportunity so the tourism in Indonesia should be able to use it to strengthen the economy nationwide,” said Mari.

On the occasion, Mari invited all the tourism stakeholders, espe-cially local government, to exploit the very conducive situation to aggressively promote in an effort to attract more investors in tour-ism sector in each region. “On that account, the county government must provide a range of ease for the tourism development in their respective region,” she said.

The AITIS was initiated by the association of the county govern-ment of Indonesia (APKASI) taking place in Hall D of the JIExpo Jakarta on April 14-17, 2014. (010)

The S5 scored well given its water resistance and a sturdy back panel made of plastic, according to SquareTrade, a provider of extended protection plans. The iPhone 5s won points for being just 4 inches (10 centimeters) diagonally, compared with about 5 inches for the Android phones. That makes the iPhone easier to grip and thus less likely to slip out of one’s hands. Nonetheless, all the smartphones tested had a medium risk of breakage, and differences between the various phones weren’t major.

SquareTrade evaluated the phones based on such criteria as size, weight, grip and the quality of the front and back panels. The company measured how far the phones slide when pushed across a table on their backs and how well they withstand drops from 4 feet and being dunked in water for 10 seconds. Robots were used to ensure consistency. SquareTrade provided The Associated Press with the results ahead of Monday afternoon’s announcement.

TOKYO — The World Cup will showcase the latest in TV technology that industry leaders hope will usher in a new era in sports broadcasting. Japanese electronics giant Sony, in partnership with FIFA, will produce a World Cup film in ultra-high definition 4K, the next generation of broadcast and media resolutions.

Developed in 2003 by the tech-nical research division of Japanese national broadcaster NHK, ultra-high definition, also known as 4K, delivers more nuance and detail than high definition TV. Niclas Ericson, FIFA’s director of TV, said “4K will propel fans around the globe into a whole new viewing dimension and it marks the dawning of a new era in the broadcasting of sport.” Companies like BSkyB and ESPN are considering the potential of a dedicated 4K sports channel.

Ultra-high definition displays

have eight million pixels, four times the number of pixels for high defini-tion TVs, making it ideal for sports broadcasting. A pixel is the smallest single component of a digital image. The more pixels that comprise an image, the clearer it becomes.

The World Cup film will include a selection of games, including the final, and will be available for purchase online after the World Cup. In addition to the World Cup film, one match from the round of 16, one quarterfinal match and the final will be produced in ultra-high definition.

“We are very excited to offer an entirely new viewing experience at the greatest sport event in the world,” said Soichi Kawachi, vice president in charge of the FIFA Partnership at Sony. “We will deliver a unique and totally compelling entertainment ex-perience, conveying the excitement of the matches in Brazil with the depth and vividness that the ultra-

high definition of 4K delivers.”While 4K replaces high defini-

tion as the highest-resolution signal available for in-home movies and television, there are obstacles to overcome before the format be-comes the industry standard. There is little consumer 4K content currently available, and the technology is still pricy. A 55-inch ultra-high definition TV in Japan sells for about $3,400 while a high definition TV costs about $600.

While the new format will get some good exposure from the World Cup venture, the timing, at least as far as the Japan market goes, is not ideal. Japan raised its sales tax on April 1. While some better-off Japa-nese have splashed out on luxury goods and vehicles, most consumers remain wary.

Still, the future of 4K is bright. While 3D TV sales are sluggish, industry analysts expect 4K to be a success once prices come down.

Study: Samsung phone durable, but iPhone has edge

NEW YORK — Samsung’s new Galaxy S5 smartphone is more durable than last year’s model and other leading Android phones, but the iPhone 5s outperformed all of them in part because of its smaller size, a new study finds.

durability scale, with 10 having the highest risk. The new HTC One phone scored a 6.5, while Google’s Nexus 5 had a 7. The iPhone 5s was at 5.5.

None of those phones is as durable as last year’s Moto X from Motorola. It had a 4.5 rating, thanks to a rounded back molded to the shape of a user’s hand, mak-ing it easier to grip. Last year’s HTC One model also had a 4.5. Last year’s Samsung Galaxy S4, meanwhile, had a score of 7.

The S5, the new HTC One, the Nexus and the iPhone all had strong front panels, despite being made of mostly glass. SquareTrade considered both the materials used and design factors such as button placement to gauge how likely a user would drop the phone while using it. The back panels on the One and the iPhone were moderate, while those on the S5 and the Nexus performed well.

The S5 and the One were the hardest to grip, while the One and the Nexus had poor marks for wa-ter resistance — the phones still

worked, but had no sound. Both the S5 and the iPhone survived the dunk test, even though only the S5 is officially marketed as water resistant — for up to 30 minutes. Only the Nexus 5 passed the slide test, but it was the only of the four

to fail the drop test. The Nexus slid 1.7 feet (0.5

meters) when pushed by a robot, compared with 2.5 feet (0.76 me-ters) or more for the others. The more a phone slides, the greater its chance of falling off the edge

of a table. After getting dropped, the Nexus was shattered, while the others had only superficial dam-age. SquareTrade said the S5’s performance on the drop test was noteworthy, because the S4 had done poorly.

The Pulitzer for breaking news was awarded to The Boston Globe for its “exhaustive and empathetic” coverage of the Boston Marathon bombing and the manhunt that followed.

Two of the nation’s biggest and most distinguished newspapers, The Post and The New York Times, won two Pulitzers each on Monday, while the other awards were scat-tered among a variety of publica-tions large and small.

The stories about the National Security Agency’s spy programs revealed that the government has systematically collected informa-tion about millions of Americans’ phone calls and emails in its effort to head off terrorist attacks. The resulting furor led President Barack Obama to impose limits on the surveillance.

The reporting “helped stimu-late the very important discussion about the balance between privacy and security, and that discussion is still going on,” said Sig Gissler, administrator of the Pulitzer Prizes. The NSA stories were written by Barton Gellman at The Washington Post and Glenn Greenwald, Laura Poitras and Ewen MacAskill, whose work was published by The Guard-ian US, the British newspaper’s American operation, based in New York.

“I think this is amazing news,” Poitras said. “It’s a testament to Snowden’s courage, a vindication of his courage and his desire to let the public know what the govern-ment is doing.” Snowden, a former contract employee at the NSA, has been charged with espionage and other offenses in the U.S. and could get 30 years in prison if convicted. He has received asylum in Russia.

In a statement issued by the Freedom of the Press Foundation, Snowden saluted “the brave report-ers and their colleagues who kept working in the face of extraordinary intimidation, including the forced destruction of journalistic materials, the inappropriate use of terrorism laws, and so many other means of pressure to get them to stop.”

Snowden’s supporters have lik-ened his disclosures to the release of the Pentagon Papers, the secret Viet-nam War history whose publication by The New York Times in 1971 won the newspaper a Pulitzer. His critics have branded him a criminal. “To be rewarding illegal conduct, to be enabling a traitor like Snowden, to me is not something that should be rewarded with a Pulitzer Prize,” said Rep. Peter King, R-New York. “Snowden has violated his oath. He has put American lives at risk.”

At The Boston Globe, the news-

room was closed off to outsiders, and staff members marked the an-nouncement of the breaking-news award — coming just a day before the anniversary of the bombing — with a moment of silence for the victims. “There’s nobody in this room who wanted to cover this story. Each and every one of us hopes that nothing like it ever hap-pens again on our watch,” Globe Editor Brian McGrory told the

newsroom. The bombing last April 15 that

killed three people and wounded more than 260 also led to a Pulitzer in the feature photography category for Josh Haner of The New York Times, for his photo essay on a blast victim who lost his legs. The Times also won in the breaking-news photography category, for Tyler Hicks’ coverage of the Westgate mall terrorist attack in Kenya. The

Washington Post won a second Pulitzer in the explanatory report-ing category, for Eli Saslow’s look at food stamps in America.

The Pulitzers are given out each year by Columbia University on the recommendation of a board of distinguished journalists and oth-ers. The two winners of the public service award will receive gold medals. The other awards carry a $10,000 prize.

DAKAR, Senegal — The World Health Organization says an outbreak of the deadly Ebola virus in West Af-rica has been linked to the deaths of more than 120 people.

As of Monday, the organization recorded a total of 200 suspected or confirmed cases of Ebola, which is normally found in central or eastern Africa, in Guinea, Liberia and Mali. The bulk of the cases are in Guinea, and Mali has yet to have a confirmed case. Tests are ongoing.

The deaths of 121 people in Guinea and Liberia have been linked to the disease.

There is no vaccine and no cure. Of-

ficials have said the current outbreak could last months. Health care work-ers are isolating the sick and tracking down anyone they have come into contact with.

BANGLI - Dropout rate remains to threaten the world of educa-tion in Bangli County. Currently, at least 59 students in Kintamani area are potential to drop out of school. Those having the potential to drop out are mostly living in the area of Sukawana with a total of 28 students.

The Head of Bangli Education Agency, Nyoman Sumantra, said on Sunday (Apr 13) that to resolve the issue his party had been routinely coming down to the field in person to early detect the students who failed in school, both at the primary and secondary level. Based on exist-ing data, of the 1,730 elementary school students that would graduate this year, his party had detected a total of 59 students potentially did

not continue their education. “Once we came down to the field, a total of 59 students were detected not to continue their education. How-ever, 13 of whom have promised to continue their education so that it only remained 46 people,” said Sumantra.

He explained that so far the prob-lems often considered triggering the potential of high dropout rate in Kintamani, among others, was the reason of economic limitation. “For economic reason, it is actually unac-ceptable. Currently the poor students have got the poor student aid (BSM) or school operational aid (BOS) funds from central government,” he said.

In addition to economic problem, the reason of distance between the location of settlements and school also triggered the school dropout rate in Kintamani as happened at

Subaya village. To get to the near-est secondary school, the students had to travel a distance of up to 7 kilometers from their settlement.

Even, this official from the Siakin village, Kintamani, had also received an illogical reason ex-pressed by parents of the students. Just because the elder children did not continue their education, the younger ones were not sent to further education for the sake of fairness. “Even, there is also such a funny reason,” he said.

Then, such a problem should be resolved by his party. He hoped with the help of a large commitment of the other fellow educators, his party had confidence to be able to make Kintamani follow the completeness of education as achieved by the other three subdistricts, namely the Ban-gli, Susut and Tembuku. Based on observation at location, both trucks were equally coming from the direction of Bangli. The truck with license plate DK 9333 GW driven by I Nyoman Sudarma

from Mambang Kaja, Selemadeg, Tabanan, was carrying chicken feed, while the fallen truck was carrying dozens of sacks of bran brought in from Sumbawa. Both trucks were

equally going to Susut.A number of witnesses seeing

the incident revealed that the incident paralyzing the path of Bangli-Susut from six o’clock in the morning originally oc-curred when the truck driven by Sudarma broke down in the middle of the road. After that, from the rear a truck of the same size driven by Muhidin from Jatiwangi village, Asakota, Bima, was attempting to overtake to the right. Unfortunately, the right

rear tire of the Muhidin’s truck fell to the ground on the edge of the road. Ultimately, position of the truck turned oblique and could not continue the journey. Seeing such condition, the truck driver unloaded dozens of sacks of bran in the truck to balance the truck position.

Until Monday afternoon, a num-ber of mechanics seemed to be brought in directly to location to re-pair the breaking down of the truck, including the effort to evacuate the

fallen truck. As a result, it kindled traffic jam along the road section for several hours. The road could only be passed through by motor-cycles, while cars were diverted to the other lane.

Chief of the Bangli Police Traffic Affairs, Nyoman Sukadana, said the incident occurred because the truck driven by Muhidin was about to overtake the breaking down truck. However, the rear tire even fell so it bogged down at the same loca-tion. (ina)

AMLAPURA - Bad luck afflict-ed the owner of a kiosk at Belong, Manggis, Karangasem, I Komang Sudarsana, 39, Sunday midnight (Apr 13). His grocery kiosk burned out and the loss was estimated to reach over IDR 50 million.

Spokesperson of Karangasem Police, Nyoman Arya Tatar, with permission from the Chief of Karangasem Police, justified on Monday (Apr 14) in Karangasem the fire incident. No casualties or injuries were reported in the incident.

Allegedly the fire was kindled by electrical short circuit in the kiosk. Witness at the scene told if the fire

was first known to the witness Ni Nyoman Srinadi. The witness saw the fire blazing the kiosk sizing 6 by 3 meters with the concrete brick wall and roofed with zinc sheets.

The kiosk contained flammable merchandise such as rice, cook-ing oil and rice bran. In the kiosk, the owner also put a refrigerator, coffee grinder along with the die-sel machine and cash worth IDR 500,000. The saving book of rural credit agency (LPD) had also turned into ashes. SYDNEY - The Australian government Tuesday gave the go-ahead for a second international airport for Sydney, ending de-cades of indecision with a move predicted to boost the national economy.

Prime Minister Tony Abbott confirmed that Badgerys Creek in western Sydney will be the site of the new airport, with planning to start immediately and construc-tion from 2016.

“It’s a long overdue decision

which to be honest, has been shirked and squibbed (dodged) by successive governments for far too long,” the prime minister told reporters.

Sydney’s Kingsford Smith Airport is the main gateway into Australia but suffers from capac-ity limits, with a former transport minister describing it as “built in an age when planes were small and few”.

Abbott said that without a second airport Sydney would be “grievously underserviced”, add-ing that the current airport would

not be able to cope with forecast growth in passenger numbers in coming decades.

Badgerys Creek, about 45 ki-lometres (28 miles) west of Syd-ney’s central business district, has long been proposed as a second airport site but had previously been shelved due to fears of a lo-cal voter backlash.

Abbott, who swept to power in elections last September vowing to be known as an “infrastructure prime minister”, said the develop-ment would proceed on a “roads first, airport second” basis.

Jobs boostThe cost of the estimated Aus$2.5

billion (US$2.35 billion) airport will be met mainly by the private sector, and the first flight was realistically not likely until the mid-2020s, he said. As a first step, the government will offer the owner of Kingsford Smith Airport, Southern Cross Air-ports Corporation, the right of first refusal in relation to an airport at Badgerys Creek.

Abbott said the project would be good for economic growth and jobs, and could drive an increase in national gross domestic product of

almost Aus$24 billion by 2060.The government projects it will

create about 4,000 jobs in the con-struction phase, and go on to produce 35,000 jobs by 2035, increasing to 60,000 over time.

Australia’s biggest airline Qantas welcomed the government’s an-nouncement, with chief executive Alan Joyce saying a second airport was a vital piece of economic infra-structure for Australia.

“The role of second airports has been well-established in several of the world’s major capitals,” Joyce said.

The forecast by the WGC comes after China became the world’s largest gold-consuming nation in 2013, overtaking India.

Annual demand for gold in the form of jewellery, coins and bars is set to hit “at least 1,350 tonnes by 2017”, the WGC said in a report on China.

That would represent a rise of nearly a fifth from the country’s re-cord consumption of 1,132 tonnes last year.

“The traditional appeal of gold to the Chinese people and consum-ers’ optimistic outlook for prices should result in private sector de-mand from all sources climbing to at least 1,350 tonnes by 2017,” the London-based council said.

Gold prices slumped by a nearly a third last year as investors aban-doned the perceived safe haven investment in favour of stocks and other riskier bets.

But global demand for gold in jewellery grew to its highest for 16 years as consumers in Asia and the Middle East scrambled to take advantage of the lower prices.

In China, rising demand for the yellow metal has also been driven by the growth of its increasingly-wealthy middle class, high levels of savings and restrictions on other

investments.Still, the council warned that a

possible slowdown in the world’s second-largest economy as it moves away from rapid export-led growth could dampen gold demand.

“China faces important chal-lenges in moving from an invest-ment and export-led growth model to a more balanced one in which private consumption plays a larger part,” said the body.

“Although the risks associated with this economic transformation should not be underestimated, on balance this process should result in a considerably higher level of consumer spending, which ought to favour the jewellery sector.”

One of the report’s authors, Alistair Hewitt, noted that Chinese gold demand had tripled in the decade to 2013.

And he predicted that the Chi-nese gold market would continue to develop over the course of the next few years, driven by cultural affinity, the increase in income and government support.

Gold jumped to a two-and-a-half-week peak at $1,330.59 an ounce on Monday as investors sought shelter from the Ukraine crisis.

NEGARA - Amerthasari Temple located about 1.5 km south of Negara town is one of the Dang Khayangan temples in Jembrana. From time immemorial to the pres-ent, the temple situating amid the customary settlement of Lokasari, or precisely Mertasari hamlet, Loloan Timur, Negara, is venerated by the subak members. It is reflected at the beginning of each planting season. To keep away their plants from diseases, residents are always saying prayers and starting their activities from the temple. It is a universal temple because it is used to venerate a great religious teacher, Danghyang Nirartha and closely as-sociated with his pilgrimage to the Island of Bali.

Building of this temple has been renovated in 1961 but in 1965 the temple building was abandoned and the renovation was totally dis-continued. Ultimately, on July 14, 1976, the entire building collapsed as hit by earthquake. After that, four customary villages were responsible for the temple existence, namely the BB Agung, Puseh Agung of Banjar Tengah village, Kertha Jaya cus-tomary village of Pendem village, and Lokasari customary village of Loloan Timur village.

At the beginning of the Mer-thasari Temple and before the renovation in 1965, there was only one temple located under a large banyan tree. Priest of the Merthasari Temple, Mangku Nendra, said that

This tradition is different from the majority of customary vil-lages in Bali, in which the melasti procession is usually carried out before the celebration of Nyepi (Day of Silence).

As observation on Monday (Apr 14), thousands of Hindus from customary villages co-alesced into the melasti tradition of the old Blahbatuh villages were seen to throng the Segara Wilis Beach and the Saba Beach, Blahbatuh subdistrict. Of the 28

customary villages that usually did the melasti procession after the Nyepi coinciding with the full moon in the tenth Balinese month, at this time the Blahbatuh village did not participate.

Chief of Blahbatuh customary village, Wayan Kantor, said that at this time the Blahbatuh customary village only held the melasti pro-cession through ngubeng or from a distance. “This measure was made because the village was still restor-ing the sanctified effigies (tapakan)

in the local Dalem Temple.“Implementation of the melasti

in full moon after the celebration of Nyepi has already become gen-eral assembly agreement of cus-tomary apparatus of the villages coalesced into the old Blahbatuh,” he added.

Aside from the 28 customary villages, the residents of Bedulu customary village also carried out a Melasti Nyepi procession after the anniversary of Samuantiga Temple, Bedulu. The melasti pro-

cession was appropriate with the tradition of local village.

Meanwhile, according to Ida Pedanda Made Gunung, the melasti procession had a mean-ing to clean up the impurities of the earth. The earth here referred to the macrocosm and microcosm. The melasti procession carried out after the celebration of Nyepi in the full moon of the Balinese tenth month was mentioned in the Dalem Mlaka palm-leaf manu-script.

The manuscript mentioned that implementation of the melasti procession made after the Nyepi was based on the understanding that after performing yoga on the

Nyepi, the pilgrims then invoked the holy water of life. Although there were differences in execut-ing the melasti, they actually had the same purpose. “Hinduism does not teach that everything must be the same, but put priority on togetherness,” he affirmed.

Other than at Blahbatuh, the villages performed ancient tradi-tions are the 18 villages in the Payangan subdistrict. According to Payangan subdistrict head, Ketut Suwastika, the melasti procession was carried to some springs or beaches. Melasti pro-cession undertaken posed a part of tradition having run down through generations. (kmb16)

previously there was a small pond around the temple. After the reno-vation, the pond was moved and a meru shrine was established. Now, it has been added with a Padma shrine on the pond. Meanwhile, water of the pond is taken modernly from the ground with the depth of about 15 meters, and then flowed under the Padma shrine.

As a matter of fact, it was named Amerthasari Temple. However, for consideration of easier pronuncia-tion, it was then called Merthasari. The current temple priest, denoting the third generation, mentioned the meaning of Amerthasari was that Amertha meant the whole foods, while Sari meant the essence.

Mangku Nendra is the succes-sor of the previous temple priest, namely Nengah Netra who was also his deceased father. Meanwhile, the first was still unclear because the temple was still not restored at that time.

At the moment, the Dang Khayangan Amerthasari Temple has some shrines, namely the Ratu Nyoman, Padmasana, Meru, Pepe-lik, Taksu and Dewa Ayu Manik Galih dedicated to venerate the Goddess Sri.

Genesis of the temple has something to do with Danghyang Nirartha. When arriving in Bali, Pedanda Sakti taught religion at Gede Perancak Temple where currently the Dang Khayangan Perancak Temple has been moved to Tanjung Tangis. At that time, he asked the monkeys where there

was another village. The monkey responded by facing north and there laid a village called Budeng. There lived black monkey or Ijah. As soon as arriving at the village, he asked again where there was a village, and the monkeys were facing the west, now becoming the location of the Merthasari Temple.

When arriving at the village, he taught the people about agri-culture, farming and trade. The Telaga Taman was a very fertile area. Religious life was quite good. In this area, there were five sanctums. In the long run, it turned into Amerthasari village and is now called Mertasari.

Now, the temple whose an-niversary falls on Anggara Kasih (Tuesday) Perangbakat is vener-ated by four customary villages namely the Lokasari (Mertasari), Dauh Waru, Pendem and Batu Agung. Mangku added that other than the temple, there was also the Taman Temple that formerly was a pond. “In days of yore, there was a temple located beneath the banyan tree,” explained Nendra.

Aside from the six shrines existing today, the temple sitting on the area of 1800 square me-ters also has a Peselang pavilion to place gamelan instrument, Piasan, storing chamber and the

easternmost is pavilion of Banten Piodalan (oblation).

In the past, most of the sup-porting devotees were farmers, but now they are from four cus-tomary villages and even from beyond Bali. As the existing plan, this temple area will be ex-panded to the current parking lot. After the land acquisition, it will become about 3,000 square me-ters. Renovation and expansion of the temple area will include the temple building, construc-tion of base fence, parking lot expansion, the arrangement of temple landscaping, as well as the wantilan hall. JAKARTA - Indonesia’s main anti-cor-ruption court sentenced a lawmaker to three years’ jail Monday for accepting bribes from French company Alstom and Japan’s Mar-ubeni in a multimillion-dollar contract.

Izedrik Emir Moeis was found guilty of ac-cepting $357,000 from the companies to help them secure a $118 million joint contract in 2004 to supply and install boilers at a power plant on the island of Sumatra.

Marubeni Corporation, a Japanese trading company, agreed last month to pay an $88 million fine after pleading guilty in a federal US court to paying the bribes, with Alstom employees, to an Indonesian lawmaker, as well as to executives at Indonesia’s state-run electricity company which awarded the contract.

The US Justice Department said Marubeni had paid several hundred thousand dollars to Indonesian officials via bogus consultants, with its consortium partners.

“The court has found that the consortium did indeed hire a consultant... who promised the accused he would pay him ‘fees or a com-

mission’,” Judge Sofialdi, who goes by one name, told the court.

The companies are facing a US court because Alstom’s US subsidiary was part of the consortium.

Alstom was listed on the New York Stock Exchange until 2004, and two officials from its US subsidiary have already pleaded guilty to charges in connection with the scam.

Two other Alstom executives face charges but have not yet entered pleas.

Marubeni admitted one count of conspira-cy to violate the US anti-bribery provisions of the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act and seven other counts of violating the same law.

Moeis is the latest in a series of lawmak-ers to be jailed for corruption in graft-ridden Indonesia, which Transparency International ranks 114th out of 177 countries on its annual index, from the least to most corrupt.

Moeis is from the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle which won the most votes in last Wednesday’s legislative polls, largely thanks to its popular presidential candidate.

Jakarta governor Joko Widodo has prom-ised cleaner governance should he win the presidency.

“Jokowi and Jusuf Kalla, better known as JK, are young and senior statesmen, respectively. So, if we look at their respective performance, it seems be ideal for them to pair up,” Bagir Manan noted here on Tuesday.

He explained that Jokowi, who came from Solo, Central Java, and took over as Jakarta governor, was very attractive to the Indonesian people.

“It seems that the people want to see a simple man who can manage the country. We have many great men but many problems adversely emerge. The people want to try a man with modest appearance, and who works on what the people really need,” the Press Council chairman emphasized.

JK, on the other hand, has high skills politically, and vast experience in government as well as in the manage-

ment of the economy.“Both of them are businessmen.

JK is senior and Jokowi is junior. I don’t see any reasonable concern that JK will aggressively take the lead in making a decision (in government) because there are the rules of the game in the partnership,” Bagir added.

He pointed out that as long as they follow the rules of the game, there will be no problem with the Jokowi-JK pair-up. This has been proven during the SBY-JK duet in the Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono’s first term of government.

“They can run the government well. I don’t think that JK, with his cultural background, is a man who has the character to sidestep people in above him. He is not that kind of a man. After all, we do not know yet whether we can find a man who is greater than JK,” he reiterated.

AntaraJAKARTA - The Indonesian Associa-

tion of Textile Producers (API) has set the target for textile and textile product exports 2014 at US$13.3 billion, a 5 per-cent increase from last year.

“Exports will increase from US$600 million to US$13.3 billion in 2014. The target of 5 percent increase is not pomp-ous. Hopefully, the new government can help achieve it,” API Chairman Ade Sudrajat stated here on Monday.

The export target can hopefully be achieved following the government’s policy to pave the way for the signing of a trade partnership agreement with the European Union, which is the main market for Indonesian textiles and textile products, besides the US and Japan, he emphasized.

As a member of the Trans Pacific Part-nership (TPP), the US remained the main market for Indonesian textiles and textile products, he explained.

Indonesia exported textiles and textile products worth US$4.1 billion to the US last year.

Demand for textiles and textile prod-ucts in the US were expected to recover this year, he commented.

“Of course, the US will play a play role. Hopefully, negotiations with the EU (on free trade) will make headway in June,” he remarked.

He predicted that exports to the EU were expected to increase three folds if the trade partnership, which could reduce import duties, could be realized soon.

Germany was one of the EU members, which will become a target for Indone-sia’s textile and textile product exports. Exports to Germany reached US$0.61 bil-lion last year, making it the fourth largest market for Indonesian textiles and textile products.

Garments led Indonesia’s textile and textile exports last year with US$7.38 billion, followed by yarns with US$2.42 billion, clothes with US$1.80 billion and fiber with US$0.56 billion.

Ade predicted that the contributions of the textile and textile product sub-sector to the national exports in 2014 will not be much different from those of last year.

Lawmaker jailed in Alstom-Marubeni bribe caseNavy officer Julio Leiva said the

death toll rose to 15 Monday, with the discovery of another body in the wreckage. More than 500 people had been treated at hospitals, mostly for smoke inhalation. An estimated 11,000 people were homeless as the toll of destroyed homes rose to more than 2,500. A contingent of sailors in riot gear stood ready to evacuate 700 more families whose homes could be lost if the winds shifted.

The fires have been so hot they cre-ated their own fierce winds, spreading flames that consumed a few entire neighborhoods of ramshackle housing. Homes stood unscathed in other districts but remained in danger from the embers being whipped through the air. “We are looking at the largest air operation ever assembled against a fire like this,” Chilean President Michelle Bachelet said. She said the blazes had grown to “dimensions never before seen.”

Chile’s forestry agency predicted it would take three weeks to completely stamp out the fires. Some people left shelters set up by authorities Mon-day and made their way home only

to discover ruins. Hundreds of young volunteers climbed up the hills to carry bottles of water and shovels to help the victims pick through the wreckage.

“We’re going to rebuild right here. Where else would we go?” said Caro-lina Ovando, 22, who lost the humble home where she had lived with three small children. Schools have been closed, some of them damaged by fires and others jammed with evacuees.

Bachelet, who decreed the city under military rule, coordinated the emergency response with her Cabinet, cancelling a trip to Argentina and Uru-guay. She asked Chile’s neighbors for backup in case of other fires, freeing Chilean planes and helicopters to join the fleet in Valparaiso.

HONG KONG — Workers at a Chinese factory owned by Yue Yuen, the world’s largest maker of athletic footwear for brands such as Nike and Adidas, are striking in a dispute over benefits. A worker said more than 10,000 employees at Yue Yuen Industrial’s plant in the southern province of Guangdong joined the strike on Tuesday.

The number could not be independently veri-fied. A company spokesman could not be reached for comment. The Taiwanese owned company, which employs about 60,000 workers in the Dongguan district, also makes shoes for Ree-bok, Asics, New Balance, Timberland and other brands at factories in China, Indonesia, Vietnam, Mexico and the United States. The company made 323.3 million pairs of shoes in the 15 months to December 2012.

It’s the latest labor dispute to flare up in south-

ern China’s Pearl River Delta manufacturing heartland, where factories face a growing shortage of migrant workers.

The worker, Cui Tiangang, and labor groups said the workers are upset because the company failed to pay full social security and housing fund contributions. The strike started on April 5 and resumed Monday when the demands were not met, according to China Labor Watch.

Cui, a 31-year-old who cuts and glues rubber soles, said only two to three of the 10 plants in the Yue Yuen factory complex were operating because of the strike.

Pictures taken by workers showed big crowds of employees rallying in the factory complex and marching on the streets, waving banners that said, “Pay back our social insurance, pay back our housing fund.” Other photos showed police and auxiliary officers equipped with helmets and riots shields.

MILAN — A Milan court has ruled that Silvio Berlusconi will perform a year of community service for his tax fraud conviction at a center for the elderly.

The assignment curtails Berlusconi’s ability to participate in the upcoming European election campaign — a point of contention among his political allies. The 77-year-old, three-time former

premier cannot run due to the conviction, the first against him ever confirmed by Italy’s high court, but remains a political force as head of Forza Ita-lia.The court said Tuesday that Berlusconi must spend most of his time in the Lombard region, where he lives, but granted permission to travel to Rome from Tuesday to Thursday each week.

Berlusconi was sentenced to four years for tax fraud, reduced to one year for a general amnesty.

VALPARAISO, Chile — With all of Valparaiso under military rule early Tuesday, 5,000 firefighters, police, forest rangers, soldiers, sailors and civil defense workers joined in a mammoth fight against wildfires licking around the hilltop shantytowns of this picturesque port city. Helicopters and airplanes dropped water on the flames and smoldering ruins of some of the poor neigh-borhoods throughout Monday, the third day since flames first erupted in a forested ravine on the outskirts of Valparaiso and then were quickly spread by strong winds that scattered glowing embers into slums.

Jorge Lorenzo put his Austin MotoGP jump-start down to being distracted by mosquitoes on his visor as he came to the grid. The two-time MotoGP world champion described the error as one of the big-gest of his career, after his Yamaha shot forward long before the red lights went out to begin the race.

Having realised his error, Loren-zo chose to accelerate away as he had already incurred a ride-through penalty, which he took at the end of

the opening lap before recovering to 10th place. “When I arrived to the grid for the start I had too many mosquitoes on my helmet, so I de-cided to take the tear-off off and this confused me a lot,” Lorenzo told the official MotoGP website.

“I was not thinking or being focused. “When I saw the red light [come on], I thought it was the race start so I released the clutch and I made a jump-start. “It was a big, big mistake. One of the hugest mis-

takes I’ve made in my career.”Lorenzo crashed out of the

season-opener in Qatar on the opening lap so only has six points to his name after two rounds. That leaves him 16th in the standings, 44 points down on leader Marc Marquez, who is undefeated so far in 2014.

While Lorenzo underlined that Yamaha still needed more pace to take the fight to Honda, he admitted that his own errors were the most

costly issue at present.“For the moment we are not

enough in general so we need to improve the bike,” said Lorenzo, “but the biggest problem now is the two mistakes I’ve made, so I hope to not repeat this.” Yamaha team boss Massimo Meregalli said Lorenzo’s errors still remained rare. “No matter how hard you prepare for a race weekend there are some things that cannot be anticipated,” he said.

MANGUPURA - Nungnung waterfalls have increased in popularity for French and German visitors to Bali. The water-falls are located near the village of Plaga in the area of Petang, Northern Badung, The way down to the source of the water is about 50 meters and used to be very difficult and steep. But now it can be easily reached through hundreds of concrete stairs. The idea to build these stairs was initiated by the people who live in the neighborhood in cooperation with the government. It takes about 60 minutes (40 km) from Denpasar to get to the location of the waterfalls by bus. Walking up and down the stairs is not as tiring as it sounds, thanks to the cool air in the mountain which makes the body fresh, as does the surrounding panorama.

Washington is trying to avoid dropping to seventh so that it can avoid the Heat in the first round of the playoffs — when LeBron and Co. will be back. Michael Beasley scored 18 points for the Heat, who will be the No. 2 seed when the playoffs begin this weekend.

Charlotte’s Chris Douglas-Rob-erts dribbled into the lane and sank a short jump shot as time expired as the Bobcats overcame a 15-point deficit in the final period to beat the Atlanta Hawks 95-93.

Al Jefferson had 27 points and 15 rebounds for Charlotte, which remained one game behind Wash-ington in the race for the sixth spot in the Eastern Conference playoffs. Gary Neal had 17. Jefferson’s turn-around jumper gave the Bobcats a 93-91 lead before Lou Williams answered with a tying jumper for Atlanta with 2.6 seconds remain-ing.

Following a timeout, Douglas-Roberts penetrated and lobbed the soft jumper as the buzzer sounded.

The Hawks rested starters Kyle Kor-ver, Paul Millsap and DeMarre Car-roll. Mike Scott led Atlanta with 20 points. At Toronto, Greivis Vasquez scored 25 points and Kyle Lowry had 24 as the Raptors set a club record with their 48th win, beating the Milwaukee Bucks 110-100.

Jonas Valanciunas had 14 points and 13 rebounds, and Tyler Han-sbrough had 12 points and 11 rebounds as the Raptors won for the sixth time in seven games and completed the first season sweep of Milwaukee in club history. Ramon Sessions scored 21 points, Jeff Adrien had 19 points and Brandon Knight 18 as the Bucks lost their 14th straight road.

The Memphis Grizzlies clinched the final playoff berth in the Western Conference with a 97-91 victory over Phoenix that eliminated the Suns from postseason contention.

Juventus doubled its lead 10 minutes later when Llorente prodded in a rebound after a goalmouth scramble following a corner. Antonio Conte’s side remains firmly on course for a Serie A and European double. Juventus faces Benefica in the Europa League semifinals as well as having a clear advantage over Roma with five rounds remaining.

“This was a ‘red flag’ match, we could have lost points at Udine,” Conte said. “But we were very good in approaching the match with the right focus and attitude. We have to stay on the ball because Roma won’t give up, “I knew (Giovinco) was in great form. He has to realize he can make the difference even in a team like Juventus. We decided to rest Carlos also because he still has a bit of a thigh problem. We need everyone because we are involved on two fronts.” Giovinco almost got a second but Simone Scuffet palmed his effort round the far post, while he also hit the upright late on.

Scuffet has had a number of im-pressive performances of late and the 17-year-old goalkeeper is already being touted as Juventus counter-part Gianluigi Buffon’s successor for Italy. Udinese’s best chance came in stoppage time when Luis Muriel’s effort came off the base of the right post.

“We met a really strong side which deserved to win,” Udinese coach Francesco Guidolin said. “My team played with courage and determination. Juven-tus was good in closing down the spaces but we played with pride and we gave everything we had to give.”

There was a vid-eo tribute before the match to former Udi-nese player Pierma-rio Morosini, who collapsed and died while playing on loan for Livorno against Pescara, two years ago to the day.

BARCELONA, Spain — With a smaller budget and no stars like Lionel Messi or Cristiano Ronaldo, Atletico Madrid wasn’t supposed to be leading the Span-ish league with five matches left to play. Atletico coach Diego Sime-one’s mantra for success has been to never acknowledge his team as a contender, insulating his squad from the hype and maintaining its focus on the game at hand.

That discourse finally changed on Sunday after Atletico beat Getafe 2-0 to extend its advan-tage to three points over Real Madrid, with Barcelona another point behind.

“From here on I am chang-ing from ‘going ahead game by game,’” Simeone said. “Now all of us Atleticos are going forward final by final.” Here are five things to know about Atletico’s title bid with five matches to play:

The last time Atletico Madrid won the Spanish league, coach Diego Simeone was wearing its red-and-white shirt as a mid-fielder. That was 18 years ago when the team claimed its ninth league title and also won the Copa del Rey.

Many of Spain’s neutral fans are also supporting Atletico’s bid because it would break Barcelona and Real Madrid’s hold on the league title that they have div-vied up for the past nine seasons. Diego Simeone returned to coach Atletico Madrid midway through the season in December 2011 and

inherited a team in shambles.Since then, the former Ar-

gentina international has trans-formed it. And he did so not by making massive signings, but instead by boosting the morale of his players.

He turned center backs Diego Godin and Miranda into the most trustworthy in the league and made midfielders Arda Turan and Tiago Cardoso into tough, physical competitors.

But even more impressively, Simeone recovered striker Diego Costa and playmaker Raul Garcia after both were loaned out for the 2011-12 season when they couldn’t earn a place on the squad.

Diego Costa has exploded this season with 34 goals in 43 games, while Garcia has added 16 goals in 30 games.

Even Atletico’s midseason moves to bring in Diego Ribas and Jose Sosa have paid off with both midfielders fitting in and contributing immediately.

“I always said we only depend on ourselves,” Simeone said. “We depend on our ambition, our enthusiasm, our effort, our hard work, and, above all, our humil-ity as a team.”

Under Diego Simeone, Atlet-ico Madrid not only takes care of business by grinding out wins weeks after week, it has also proven capable of rising to the occasion for the big matches. Simeone led Atlet ico to the 2012 Europa League title and European Super Cup, and ended a 14-year winless streak against Real Madrid to claim the Copa

del Rey in 2013. Last week, Atletico eliminated Barcelona from the Champions League to advance to the semifinals.

Atletico Madrid’s focus on team play has allowed its less talented squad to outperform Real Madrid’s and Barcelona’s star-studded groups. Atletico held Barcelona’s potent attack to only two goals in five meetings this season and has the league’s best defense with only 22 goals allowed this campaign. Belgium goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois, meanwhile, has proven to be the best in the league.

Atletico Madrid controls its own destiny and needs to win four of its remaining five matches to win the Spanish league title. The problem it that it has the hardest schedule of the top three teams. Atletico’s run-in continues Friday against Elche, when the hosts will look to remain undefeated in league play this season at the Vicente Calderon Stadium.

Atlet ico then faces tough back-to-back games in Valencia, first at Valencia and then at Le-vante. Malaga at home is next, followed by the season finale at Camp Nou versus Barcelona.

Atletico holds the head-to-head goal advantage over Real Madrid, which means it can still lose a match and edge out Madrid if they end the season level on points. “We have to take each game as it comes now more than ever,” Atletico defender Diego Godin said. “We have a good advantage and we must keep it until we reach the end.”

Edin Dzeko remembers clearly how Manchester City’s title hopes were written off prematurely two years ago and the striker is hoping the pundits are similarly wide of the mark after the weekend’s defeat at Liverpool.

After a 1-0 defeat at Arsenal in early April 2012, City trailed Man-chester United by eight points but they won their last six games to claim the league title for the first time in 44 years.

The 3-2 reverse at Anfield on Sunday left City trailing Liverpool by seven points and Chelsea by five but, because of their games in hand, they are in a better position than they were two years ago. “It’s too early to say if Sunday’s result will decide where the title ends up because we still have six games to play and Liverpool and Chelsea both have four left,” the Bosnian striker told the club’s website.

“People talk about pressure and suchlike but that doesn’t really matter - just who wins the most games between now and the end of the season. “I firmly believe, like the last time we won the title, that it will go right to the wire despite our defeat at Anfield.”

City have an early chance to get back to winning ways with one of their games in hand against bottom club Sunderland at home on Wednesday before hosting another struggling side, West Bromwich Albion, the following Monday. Dzeko, who also won the German title with Wolfsburg in 2009, said the desire to win the Premier League had by no means been diminished by the 2012 success.

“We have a lot of new players and we want to win it again for our fans, the team and the club and we have to get back on track by beating Sunderland and West Brom in the next week,” added the 28-year-old. “I enjoyed winning the league with Wolfsburg and it was amazing to win it with City and I hope to win it many more times as a City player.”

Dzeko, who has scored 11 league goals this campaign, said the return of Sergio Aguero, who has scored 15, could be a big factor as the season goes down to the wire. The Argentine returned on Sunday as a substitute after five games out with a hamstring injury and his cross came within a whisker of allowing David Silva to give City a 3-2 lead after they had battled back from 2-0 down.

“We are playing aggressive, attacking football and scoring a lot of goals,” Dzeko said. “Sergio’s return is great for the team because he is such an important player for us. “We hope we can see the very best of him in the games that remain.”

Dzeko and Aguero scored stoppage time goals as City rallied to secure a famous 3-2 victory over Queens Park Rangers on the final day of the 2011-12 season to spark scenes of wild celebrations at the Etihad Stadium.

the opening lap before recovering to 10th place.

Ade predicted that the contributions of the textile and textile product sub-sector to the national exports in 2014 will not be much different from those of last year.

death toll rose to 15 Monday, with the discovery of another body in the wreckage.

Valparaiso is an oceanside city of 250,000 people surrounded by 42 ills that form a natural amphitheater. The compact downtown includes Chile’s congress and its second-largest port, and the ci ty owes i ts s tatus as a UNESCO World Heritage Site to the colorful homes built on slopes so steep that many people commute using stairs and cable cars.

(kmb16)

GIANYAR - In the Blahbatuh subdistrict is held the melasti (purification of sanctified effigies and ritual paraphernalia) procession every full moon in the tenth month of Balinese calendar (April) by the 28 customary villages called the villages belonging to the ‘old Blahbatuh.’

previously there was a small pond around the temple.

The fire could be extin-guished about two hours later after the fire was known. Two fire trucks and a water tank of Karangasem Fire Brigade were assisted by resi-dents and police to extinguish the fire. (013)

Associated Press Writer

EvEry Temple and Shrine has a special date for it annual Ceremony, or “ Odalan “, every 210 days according to Balinese calendar, including the smaller ancestral shrine which each family possesses. Because of this practically every few days a ceremony of festival of some kind takes place in some Village in Bali. There are also times when the entire island celebrated the same Holiday, such as at Galungan, Kuningan, Nyepi day, Saraswati day, Tumpek Landep day, Pagerwesi day, Tumpek Wayang day etc.

The dedication or inauguration day of a Temple is con-sidered its birth day and celebration always takes place on the same day if the wuku or 210 day calendar is used. When new moon is used then the celebration always happens on new moon or full moon. The day of course can differ the religious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full day with some temple celebrating for three days while the celebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is never less than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importance of the occasion.

The celebration is very colorful. In front of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellas depending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines.

In front of important shrine one sees, besides these umbrellas soars, tridents and other weapons, the “umbul-umbul”, long flags, all these are prerogatives or attributes of Holiness. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”, long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land. Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits and colored cakes, to the Temple.
